- Taped for a 1973 simultaneous TV and FM radio broadcast, direct from the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, CA, this is the Mikael Rickfors-fronted band performing before an enthusiastic crowd...
"Long Dark Road" / "Carrie-Anne" / "Bus Stop" / "He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother" / "Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)"
It’s so great hearing tony sing more
Tony is a wonderful singer and performer love his talented man
50 years later, these guys still slay me
I love this It is so beautiful to see them playing And singing it's wonderful..
Tony is a great lead singer and so wonderful
They are all such great singers
Bernie was the best! But never got the chance.
Tony Hicks carrying the show
Absolutely great line up.
Hmm..I;ve been seeing more ABC "In Concerts" getting posted. They haven't been shown since they first aired so I am glad somebody got them out of the ABC archives. Keep posting them!
I never realized how many songs I loved from the Hollies. I didn’t realize they had stayed together for all this time. I had heard they had broken up very early on. So glad they.didn’t. Thanks for posting this video. ❤️🙏🏻
I love Bobby Elliott, drumming on he ain’t heavy. He is absolutely awesome drummer
THE HOLLIES. The best until now. I enjoyed too much this concert. Thanks. 🎼💕
Romany and out the road..absolutely brilliant album's with Mikel as lead singer 😊 all there music is amazing
This version of the band rocks out even more the bass and the drums are allowed to push the tunes even more than on record.
Same drummer from the beginning of the band -- Bobby Elliot --Always considered one of the best drummers in the biz -- Started to go bald at young age so in came the hats and later he stated wearing wigs of various colours.
agree great energy with this group able to ut it loose it seems
who were Bambi LOL
Thanks for posting the entire performance! So great. They're rocking pretty hard here - love it.
Mikael Rikfor is a good singer and a replacement for Allan Clarke, but couldn't give the sound that the Hollies had when Clarke had with them. Allan was the one that gave the Hollies their sound.
SAME problem with Peter Howarth. In fact the current Hollies are just slightly better than a cover band. NO CLARKE, NO NASH, NO SYLVESTER.
@@alanrockman2469 Perfect!!
I love it when Tony sings❤
Fantastic! Great musicians, great show and a very good line up!
Long Dark Road great job Tony as lead singer love it
I love you hollirs desde los 60
AND YOU KNOOOW I LOVE YOU
So when I was a little kid, my parents had a old Grundig radio/record player and Carrie Ann was on a 45 record. Who knows where it came from but It got played alot for sure.
This is a rare performance & band line-up, Clark had just left the band for a solo career, this is what the band would of looked & sounded like without Clark. I think this film demonstrates just how each one could hold his own as a talent.
I'm still asking why did they fill Allan Clarke's place, it's clear that they as a four-piece band could have done the whole work 🤷🏻♀️
... would 'have'...
@@KieroUnasBotasAGoGo because they felt like it. Is that a good enough answer for you. It's too bad they didn't call you first and consult with you. 🤡🤡
Allen Clarke was working on solo project at this time at the time. He didn’t sing on the album that produced Long Cool Woman and Long Dark road. He rejoined the band later in 1973. I remember seeing this performance in 1973 on ABC’s “In Concert” and was blown away (still am) at their harmonies. To me Tony Hicks (guitarist, banjo, lead and backup vocals) is just as important to the Hollies unique sound.
Tony Hicks is one of the most underrated guitarists, a very talented guitar player who should get more credit for his skills
Had I been their manager, I would have Michael sing the songs from Romany and Out on the Road, and Tony and Terry sing the original songs that Allen used to sing.
And what makes you think that they would listen to you. 🙏
@@chriskroll4166 because I was their manager! 🙂
... and my suggestion makes logical sense.
@@jamiej14544 you are out of your league on this one. Go away 🤡
@@chriskroll4166 If I were their manager, I would expect them to listen to my advice. That's what managers are for. Actually, they were doing exactly what I suggest. Terry and Tony sang "Long Cool Woman" and the other tracks Alan sang lead on, leaving Michael Rikfors to sing the tracks from the two albums they recorded with him. It didn't last long, as Alan Clarke returned to the group when his solo career didn't pan out.
My thumb is broken and it's hard to play my guitar.Guys like this aren't show-offs;they're like the best friend who beats up the bully for you.
Took at look at old tour histories. On October 23, 1972 the Hollies with Danny O'Keefe concert at the Palace Theater in Albany NY the ticket price was either $4.50 or $5.00!
I think Mikael Rickfors did a great job. The 'Romany' album is fantastic.
Tony Hicks really gave Long Dark Road his best. It really rocks! Also he wrote the song with Kenny Lynch.
Love the Hollies from 1963 through 1999. After 2000 not so much.
I agree ! However, I have seen the recent Hollies line up about 4 years ago. They did a good job as with Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliot as they only original members. I enjoyed the show with the understanding this was about as good as it was going to get under the current circumstances.
JosieAnn, I’ve been a Hollies fan for 3 years, and I prefer their music during their Clarke, Hicks, and Nash years. Clarke, Hicks, and Sylvester, not so much, except for maybe 5 songs those being, “He Ain’t Heavy”, “Gasoline Alley Bred”, “Long Cool Woman”, “The Air That I Breathe”, and “Amnesty”
I think it's because he's the second voice on the studio recording of the song. Its practically a Clarke/Hicks harmony all through the song
Would have been interesting to See Kenny Lynch guesting in Vocals on TV show
I"ve loved all the time
No-one can replace Allan on He Ain't Heavy
Increíble!!!!!!!!increíble......
7:02 anyone else notice Mikael’s guitar strap comes off at the start of Bus Stop? I don’t think he ever gets it back on. He did a great job singing, though. It’s also great hearing Tony sing this much. Without Allan, it misses a lot of the energy (energy that Bobby’s drumming in particular calls for) but they’re all good singers. Listen to the original tracks from Romany and Out On The Road. Downriver in particular is proof that Mikael is a fantastic singer in his own right.
I love it!
Wish they would have let Tony sing more .
Where is Allen ? Don't know this guy? Love hearing Tony sing . I'm a fan.
Tony Hicks is underappreciated. Just think of all of the great and memorable intro licks on the Hollies' hits.
wrong , just under exposed
I hate to bring attention to this, but @ 3:18, Tony and Terry stepped away from the mic and their voices were still singing the harmonies. Everything seems to be live about this, but what the hell was that? I don't think Bobby and Bernie were singing at all.
Good catch! Ive seen this before with the Hollies. I know the concerts live because they made to many mistakes. Perhaps a pre-recording of the background vocals?
If you find out, let me know? Cheers.
@@NeillSackett That's probably what it is. I know on one video from the eighties of "Carrie Anne", the vocals are live because Tony's voice cracks when he sings his verse. Tony then proceeds to mess with the keyboardists' keys during the solo and the guy grabs Tony's hand, but nothing changed about the sound.
Tony Hicks playing bass.
HEY! Wheres the singer?!?!? Alan Clarke!
Slayers is right.!
A time when bands had real talent unlike from the 90's on...
Where is Alan Clarke?
Bernie Calvert (? Organ/keyboards 🤔 where is he
Left side stage, you can see him behind the organ at the 4:10 mark... and then back on bass for 'Carrie Anne'
@@Malc2311 Thanks a lot for pointing him out. Now I can see him there, behind. I would have loved if he were given a close-up from where is he seen playing organ in this song. How great and talented musicians are they.
Who is singing Long Cool Woman here?
Terry Sylvester
Though he was brilliant it seems they didn't really need Alan Clarke I knew they could sing but not like this WOW! Seems all but the drummer were LEAD SINGERS!
No Hollies without Alan Clarke!!!!!
Where was Bernie Calvert?
On keyboards and bass.
You can tell they have lost their mojo without Harold (allan) to keep them tight! Love the vocals of tony & terry but Mikael is flat.
Back in Adelaide au being 14 with a B&W 26in Stromberg Carlson T.V. i saw nothing of this and had no idea what they looked like.
At least the audience seemed to appreciate them enough to get their moneys worth.
Harold ? Are u drunk 🤡
@@chriskroll4166 did you not know Harold was his real name? Haha I thought so 😝
Sorry, Mikal Rickfors doesn't cut it.
Not the same without Clarke,
l less like the Hollies without Allan Clark
This is The Hollies? Not the same Hollies I remember. Sounds like a cover band. 😢
Aweful.
Not the Hollies without Clark as lead singer. That dude singing in his place sucks. What a shame. Change the name because this isn't the Hollies.
every band mainly gets their sound from the singers with out Nash nothing like them before
Erm, Hicks and Elliot obviously have a different opinion from you. You’re just a nobody.
These guys are imposter's,,, totally not the real Hollies...
3 of them are from the hit making mid-60s era so to call them all imposters is a tad far fetched…
They are all from the 60's Hollies lineup apart from Mikael Rickfors
The 2 guitar players were in the original Hollies Band. That guy singing is horrid! Change the name. These aren't The Hollies anymore.
@@hertstraveller The only Band member that counts is missing. That guy couldn't hold a candle to Clark on his best day.
@@reneemallicone6839 The bass player and drummer are also from the 60s Hollies lineup. Clark left for 2 years in 1972 and the Hollies got a replacement singer whilst he was trying to get a solo career
The soundman musta been hammered becaise he fuxked the sound up oretty good
