I'm working on my technique by learning Petrucci's stuff, and muting unwanted strings has a lot to do with very small details of how you place your picking palm, and the fingers of your fretting hand. Using high gain, you have to dampen every string you're not playing. It takes just as much practice as learning the licks themselves. One note can make an open string ring out just because it matches a harmonic of that open string. People say you should practice with a clean tone, and while that's good advice to ensure you're not using distortion and delay to mask your mistakes, you need that gain to highlight sounds that you wouldn't hear when playing clean. You can even hear the dissonance that happens when changing strings, if you don't mute or lift your finger at the exact moment you play the next note, even if it's only for a millisecond, with a high gain tone. I say practice the song with the tone you'll use when playing the song live.
@@dandavidson1704 really? When you sign on to a project and they give you 3 days to learn an album, and admit they programmed stuff an 8 armed person could not play, and get mad at you for not nailing it? You blame the guy 3 days in?
@fieryredpodcast4273 Chill tf out. If you think this is them getting mad at him you're very sensitive. This is just what the album recording process looks like. You're not gonna get very far if you're overly concerned with your bandmates feelings
First Time I've seen this was today. That was AWESOME! Did NOT have a clue that the GREATEST drummer of ALLLL Time had the pipes too. James Labrie nails every note. Great video.
4:55 Myung surprises me even with the simplest things, a riff that any bass player would play with one or two fingers, he plays it with three and still sounds like if he was playing with only one
To everybody who says the other guys are too hard on LaBrie: being in a recording studio is a very different experience from anything else. Priorities and attitudes change, that's completely normal. They are pushing him towards a good product and he is just tired. I don't sense any bad vibes here, it's just a general fragility that happens in a recording studio. :)
I don't think they're hard at all on LaBrie. It's just how it is in recording studios. You want to sound a particular way and have to practice and learn, and try things. Anyone that thinks they were hard never been into recording studios
Thank you. Anyone who's recorded music knows you have to be completely honest with each other. It takes a level of respect and intimacy to be able to record and write music together for decades
@moyrml it just looked like a towel or something wrapped around the neck and strings to deaden them up so the strings he wasn't playing on didn't ring out while he recorded the lead part.
Yeah...but working in a studio usualy is about putting out ideas and the idea that wins is the one everybody likes so its not about picking on someone - its about chosing.
Does anyone know the name of that chord John Petrucci plays at 5:54 (the second last in that acoustic chord progression?) It sounds strange but cool :)
3:10 - The best moment of Prog Rock
Petrucci: *pulls off end of mad solo*
Also Petrucci: *”THAT SUCKED!”*
Petrucci: does an amazing lick
Also Petrucci: that sucks
7:40 proof that he dampens his strings in studio, thank fk he is a human after all

@@gr8guitarplayer hope you haven't spent the last year over thinking everything
Man! LaBrie's voice... Just beyond words....
EPIC voice!
He could still sing then for sure
7:49 "That sucked!"....still makes me laugh 10 years later.
fjk1138 I did hear two wrong notes
Ι guess the bending note came out dead because of the fretting ?
@@dandavidson1704 no you did not
God, LaBrie nails every single thing he sings here. it's a shame they're so hard on him throughout this. "GUYS YOU HAVE ANY MORE COMPLIMENTS?" Lol
ShatteredWindowpane it’s good to have bandmates that push you
This guy is a great example of perseverance and hard work. F°ck everyone who hates him

@Christopher Har V The way he sang that was even better than what ended up on the record.

I love watching LaBrie in the studio.
He is just amazing!
He's AWESOME...
Meeeeee! Like MEeeeeeEEee or MeeEEeeEeEEE?
Nah more like MEeemeee!
Ok, MeeeeEEe!
It sounds weird but that's the beautiful thing about cooperation.
The verse sounds so sick without vocals! Wow! 4:35
8:29 Poor James! He's kicking ass and the guys are just brutal in their critiques!
I just happened to stumble on this video, and was about to make this exact comment that I see I made a year ago!! Poor James!
I still hear "Give your cell phone to me" every single time now. Damn you UA-cam comments!
Dude I wasn’t gonna ever hear that but then you went and said it… 💀
I still heard that words in 2023 ! 🤣🤣🤣
7:50
Mike: "Its got the Yngwie part"
John: "Yeah it had the Yngwie part"
Mike: "Is it good or bad?"
hahaha
7:50
i love the way labrie said "the fuck was that?!?!"
I think Mike didn't like how he delivered the "the fck was that?" I think he prefered it to be a little higher
@@danielbarrera261 lol
LaBrie is such a nice dude
3:29 that’s why Portnoy was so important in the Band!!! I’m so happy he’s finally back!!!
First Time I've seen this was today. That was AWESOME!

I kinda liked the growl La Brie was doing... It's fucking metal, no one should force him to sing completely clean if he doesn't do it first...
Ι actually love Portnoys voice
James is a awesome singer and then when the guys add their back up harmonies it sweetens the pot more.
8:50 they troll him so hard
4:55 Myung surprises me even with the simplest things, a riff that any bass player would play with one or two fingers, he plays it with three and still sounds like if he was playing with only one
At the end I feel like they're joking with him, but Labrie was about to get kinda mad
When JP repeat the words, he also said “ give ur cellphones to me” ! 🤣
MAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

5:55 I miss portnoy..😭😭
Leave the singing to james
Amazing mind blowing playing…which influence to be a music lover.
Ah Mike...you need to come back man!!!
This song would have been even better if they hired a female singer to harmonise with JLB in the chorus. Would have given that vampire vibe even more
@moyrml it just looked like a towel or something wrapped around the neck and strings to deaden them up so the strings he wasn't playing on didn't ring out while he recorded the lead part.
May fav on the album.
The most badass intro in the history of television!
John Petrucci's face! 2:39
JUST MEMORABLE!
Maaaaahaaayah!

Papa Whye ?
5:24
So that's where the sustain comes from..
God, I miss Portnoy.
Best singer of all time. We love you in Canada James
I second that. Rik Emmit and Mike Reno are pretty damn good too. Oh Canada!
An angel lives inside Labrie's throat.
Apparently it's time to rock this shit!
Why so few views? I found this video so insightful.
Canta muito ( 7:20 )
Damn, JLB shreds it up, he's so great.
Portnoy's just like "...I hate recording tambourine parts..."
People: What's the challenge about this new album?
DT: Playing things slow...
People: WTH?
HAHAHAHHAA
Amaranth Orobia that’s actually tru though the thing about playing slow is it’s harder to be steady and keep time
8:15 is so funny. Poor LaBrie :( "actually the deliverance wasn't so great either"
MAYYYYY AHHH HAYYYYYY!
At 7:49 JP said "that suck" but for us, is fucking awesome.
james is fucking awesome
great labrie
8:33 I love the frustration of Mr. LaBrie.
LaBrie is kickin' ass in this video
This Mike Portnoy is unbelievable!!!!! All this is crazy! These Guys are not from this World!
4:07 labrie said:"what about that?am i doing good??"

His voice is pure gold on metal scene. ❤️.

wow, with the rippln' on JLB i'm surprised he wasn't the one to quit. interesting a see an acoustic in JP hands, never seen that before.
HAHA FANTASTIC AliG impression!!! :D
I watched it with a straight face for so many times until you mentioned that LOL
5:31 - 5:53, LIKE A BOSS!!
Personally, I wouldn't mind being mugged by James LaBrie.
Maaaahaaaayah!!!!!!!
3:10 hahahahahaha
I really do believe Labrie's interpretation on this video are far more compelling and strong than the official one.
"Ye put a 'fuckin' in there and we're all set" LMFAO
7:41 That definitely was the Yngwie vibe. :P
James Labrie is a god to me.
couldnt do it at first attempt.. woke up everyone that was sleeping in my house..
Is it just me or does Labrie never seem like he enjoys being around the rest of the band?
We love you in Italy James ;)
Cool
This is a true vampires tale.....
@EJE22822 or it was a wet towel to prevent the strings from bursting into flames from the speed
8:14 everything was good except the give yourself and the me :D

For... For... For... Forsa... FORSAKEN...
poor Labrie, theyre being too picky out of his singing, he does it very well
Yeah i've noticed that on every DT 'making of' videos they're picking on him while he's delivering outstanding vocal parts.
Fucking truth, let him do his amazing work in peace!
Yeah...but working in a studio usualy is about putting out ideas and the idea that wins is the one everybody likes so its not about picking on someone - its about chosing.
someone tell him to shave cuz he'll look better
The main man? I miss you Sir :)
