Its nice when you can tell someone knows what their doing when they are working on your stuff
Ron Hoover RV did a great job on the box trailer A/C unit for you. Thanks for sharing JD.
I made a toyhauler camper out of the same trailer. I couldnt find a unit that could haul my 2 utility wheelers so I made one. I insulated all walls, ceiling and below the floor with 3/4 foam insulation boards sealed with foil tape. I also gained 200lbs capacity by changing the 1/2 ugly plywood to 1/8 luan on walls and ceiling. Put down nice lenolium, added full bathroom/shower with plastic flush toilet. 45 gal fresh 50 gal black, no grey just goes to black. A shower sump for boats lets me take my shower water and pump it up though an air lock and into black. Cheap fleabay led strip lights, 13.5k roof ac, 500w solar w 2 110Ah agm (no venting needed), midnight solar mppt controller, cheap electric pressure washer to clean the wheelers, push button king size bed like in large toyhaulers with almost full size custom bed up front, 3kw honda genny (the super quiet one) mounted in a box inside or removeable to put in truck bed. After alot of loving work I have a wonderful compact custom toyhauler. My 7.3 takes it anywhere I feel like going. Oh and a custom multi layer security system for when I have the wheelers outside overnight to accommodate up to 7 comfortably, the gps tracker gives me peace of mind when its not being used. Ex Rv mechanic for over 10 years and a master of all trades. If I could figure out how to add a slide, I would.
never seen anybody so excited about a trailer air conditioner
BTBRV.
I can say for sure they did a good install by bracing up them roof bows and adding an arch to them. 👍 Looks great!!
Also. I work on semi trailers doing inspections and repairs for 25 years now and on my service truck I insulated the box with foam board. It still gets hot but the radiant heat from the walls and ceiling are dramatically reduced. Pull all your plywood off then install the foam and cover it back up with the plywood.
And yes. That roof sheet can burn you in direct sun. I’ve been on top of them in sunny summer days and it’s unbearable the amount of heat that radiates off the roof. Enough to cook an egg I believe.
That’s so awesome. Awesome to see some talented work being done. I have been considering putting a third AC on my coachman Chaparral 381RD. 2 units just don’t cut it in this 100+ degree heat. It even struggles when in the 90’s. Maybe you could do a segment on this. Maybe Ron Hoover in Corpus Christi could do this. Love you videos
WOW, I wish my A/C in my camper was that quiet.
Without insulation I think it would be working overtime when it shouldn’t. The electric to keep it cool has to be more than enough to warrant insulation. One thing that catches my eye is how many knots are in the wood.
Agreed. The insulation is a one time expense. Electricity/Fuel for a generator is an ongoing expense.
@@txshirle I will be adding insulation soon.
@@BigTruckBigRV for the insulation which way would you install the Foil side towards the inside of the trailer or out
I need those solar powered exhaust fans. Where do I get them.
I have been looking for an install video on exactly this kind of set up. Please tell me these guys did a complete install video. As an alternative what do they charge for this exact install?
How's it holding up, I'm looking to add a 2nd AC and I like the furrion
Got a link to the solar power exhaust fan/roof vent?
Wouldn’t it help to install half inch rigid insulation? This would help increase the AC efficiency. And it wouldn’t reduce interior space. Not too expensive either.
Coming soon :)
Before/after temps? Cost of install? Decibel comparisons? Will it start with a generator/what size? Amp pull?
But they can nail some 2x2's.
Tells me very little.
How has this AC been working out for you? I converted a cargo trailer to a camper last year and I'm debating on what type a/c to put in. I don't wanna cut into the side for a window unit. I've considered a mini-split. I have a roof vent that's braced for a roof mount a/c. I currently have a vent fan in it but I'm debating on replacing it with an a/c. Is it a simple install? I definitely want something I can just plug straight into my generator.
A while back you talked on axels. My 2014 Rockwood signature 5th wheel, rates just under 9300 lbs has what I call torsion axles , I would say rated at 3500 or a little more. The china bombs that came with it we did get 18 months out of them. Now we have gdyr marathons at a weight rating higher. So far so got for them. It is the ride of the trailer I ? a lot. It bounces more than I think it should. Do you know of anything I can do to improve the ride without changing the entire supension.?
what are you using the trailer for?
I just bought a travel trailer with a Furrion 15.5K BRU Chill AC. You said you had your trailer plugged into a 120 volt power source. Was that a 15 amp or 20 amp circuit? I was wondering if I can plug my trailer into my house 120 volt 15 amp power source while running the AC and refrigerator.
How has the furion ac unit been for you? Im looking at buying one but haven't seen too many reviews on the unit.
Thanks
How has this held up after 1 year of use
Wow! Awesome JD! Wish I had a dealer like that locally. May have to make an extended trip to Corpus for some upgrades.
The radius arch they made is called a truss
Yes sir. I have a hard time remembering terms at times when I'm filming.
How did they get on the roof to install the unit? You can't walk on these cargo trailer roofs right?
could you run this off a battery bank?
You would be a fool to not insulate the roof. The less your ac has to work the longer it last and the less energy it consumes.
What is the cost to get an A/C installed like that on a cargo trailer?
Well ordered a set of furrion ac's one came in destroyed now have to wait for another to come in said might be end of next month . Not a good start for furrion
Were those 2x4s ripped into an arch shape? Im guessing they also did that to meet the minimum roof thickness for the Furrion?
How much was the install labor + parts etc….?
I kinda want to put one in my shed or the dog house for being so quiet
Now.... What are you going to do when it gets cold. Nice job
@@dcsj6837 hahaha
I'm not a expert on cargo trailers and there build but am looking at diffrent brands for the best bang for the buck and it appears that those roof crossmembers are on 24" center. Could that have been the problem with the structral integrity? I am curious since I have seen a few brands that offer 16" oc with the option to upgrade to 12" on center wondering if they would have the same problem.
That likely plays a HUGE factor. Regardless, I would still recommended a truss type system since the metal they use on these is ultra lite and cheap.
I'm getting ready to replace a couple of the AC's on my Toyhauler. Was curious if your were doing the same on yours, would you buy the Furrion ones ? That's for any advice, really like your channel.
Thanks,
Drifter
I would swap mine out and may still do it
@@BigTruckBigRV Thanks for getting back to me. I sort of thought so from the way you talked on your video. I have looked at what reviews I can find but your the only guy I could find that has them. I will 2 this week myself. I have Cyclone CY 4000 now and will be trading it in soon for a Vanleigh Beacon 39 GBB. If you get a chance you should go do one od the factory tours in Mississippi, it pretty awesome to how different they do things. Thanks again, and thanks for all your videos.
How many amps does it need at startup? Will a 15 amp plug power it?
14.5amps. it has a softstart kit built in
Ok, what's the cost?
Trailer dimensions? ceiling height? Nice AC unit 👍
8.5' x 20' x 7'
Remind me the size of your cargo trailer?
8.5'x20'
What is it with black vehicles and those who live in hot southern climates?? Black is the absolute worst color you could pick yet a very high percentage of vehicles I see with southern plates, especially Texas, are black.
Furrion AC system isn’t well designed. After putting the 14.5K on my insulated Cargo Craft trailer, found out even after it reaches temperature, or temp falls well below set temp, the fan never shuts off... by their design. It’ll wear out too fast if you plan to leave the temp set with the trailer plugged in all summer. Last I talked to Furrion’s customer service and techs, they already have a lot of complaints but wouldn’t have a remedy anytime this year. Return and got a Dometic Brisk 2.
Great video though!
Didn't they design it that way using 2 fans vs the typical 1?
I couldn’t say. The good folks at Furrion never brought that up as a reason it never shuts off. If I remember correctly, each fan serves a different purpose, one to blow air over the coils, the other to move air into the cabin. I understood this to be more efficient in the cooling process, but both seem to continue to run around the clock, even when not actively cooling.
In all cases, I’d still be concerned about wearing out a fans letting it run 24/7, then chance freezing up the AC.
Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to like the Furrion AC ever since it was announced last year.
@@everythingyouknowis nasa uses dometic, you made the right choice!
Lumber? I thought they would have fabricated up some metal.
If made out of steel, I would have had to essentially redesign the entire truss system because the factory trusses are WEAK AS HECK. The lumber added strengthens the entire system. This method provides a significant amount of strength, simplicity, rigidity, access, and contour to the roof allowing water to run off.
Some .093" to .064" 1.5"×1.5" tubing would be stronger... But that's just my opinion, as a metal fabricator.....
They did do a great job though!!!!
Probably a wee bit less expensive than steel or aluminum fabed up...
How is the furrion holding up ?
Good so far. I've only used it about a dozen times
@@BigTruckBigRV i been tossing around it or the dometic evolution
I guess a thermometer was not in the budget
It was..... Just didn't know the battery was about to die. I'll do my own testing soon.
JD Brother, love your videos. You give a lot of great info along with your personal knowledge. But if I could make one critique, you use the term "Upwards of" a lot. And I'm not sure that you are always using it in the correct manner. Not trying to offend you or anyone else. Otherwise keep up the great work.
Am I not using it correctly as defined below?
upwards (or upward) of
more than.
synonyms:more than, above, over, in excess of, exceeding, beyond, greater than
@@BigTruckBigRV sometimes you use it in place of "up to". Like if something is 6 ft tall you could someone up to six foot would fit here. Instead you say "someone upwards of six foot could fit here". I think it is just because it is a linguistic go to for you the sometimes it falls into the wrong placement. We all do it with certain words or phrases. I wasn't trying to be a grammar Nazi. It's just a conversationally uncommon term, so it stands out.
Thats very silly... insulate the trailer... seems counter intuitive to hvae a bad ass ac unit with no insulation... you could even use insulating boards... My cargo trailer which is set up as inside pit space with AC (10,000 BTU) for my model racing is insulated and needs to be here in south florida.
