Now that's just solid 'straight ahead' stuff. No meaningless meandering and unrewarding searchs. This is FINDING AND HOLDING the heart in front and going straight to the 'time-keeper leg' which cannot lie and just can't be stopped..LOL
I love the great bands that Monk had with Charlie Rouse -- along with the wonderful pianist, Barry Harris, they are the sounds I most associate with Monk, whose music I love. And this rhythm section, with Gales and Riley, was one of his best.
Yes, today's stuff is boring. I heard 'Hackensack' 50 yrs ago and still kicks me all over. He dedicated this song to the city of Hackensack New Jersey. There wil never be a T. Monk RIP.

I live here in Hackensack. About 40 years ago I went to a garage sale here. When in the basement I saw a “theatre”. I remember it being ‘velvet & neglected’. Now seeing this video brings it all together. Unfortunately the hospital 🏥 bought the property and razed it.

Totally random thought- did Monk play that loud when practicing at home??? Must be aN upstairs neighbor to be found-somewhere -who came knocking and said “ quiet!!”... or .....“ louder!!!” The one and only. Bless you TSM.
This is 1964 in London so it must have part of that World Tour Monk took because I saw this same group in Honolulu in Spring of '65 coming back from Japan. Ben Riley and I became conversant over the months when I first arrived back in New York and he told me as much. Great footage and a great tune with Monk in fine fettle and foot-stompin' style. Thanks BBC!!! Is that "Well ya Need'nt"?

@@dr.brianjudedelimaphd743 I thought it sounded similar to something else as well - and the verdict is still out for me - i can't place the name in my head. But anyhoo, Monk wrote well u needn't too.
Thelonious continuously killin the hat game lol. So good
The quartet features Monk on piano, Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums.
Larry Gales is such a bad ass!!! Timing, swing, projection, melodic lines; and that solo is just fantastic!!!
He is always pushing the beat hard and swinging his ass off!
Yep, he’s so great
You are so spot on Total Bad Ass!!!!!
Gales has such a unique smile.
Can't get enough of that ride cymbal...
This had made my Saturday night superb..!!!!!!!!!!
Thelonious of course was one of a kind, but Larry's bass solo here is from another planet entirely. So much talent in one room.
One of those tunes you can whistle all day
OMG!!! Best Monk line up ever I cry and dance when I listen to these guys. Amazing humans thank you! 🍻🍻🍻
This is the true sound of jazz.

Absolutely killer playin wow and Monk amazing
The Bass solo is very clear and great !
Yeah Larry Gales crushes all his bass work! That solo is one of the sickest I've ever heard him throw out there in the heat of a jam. Classic cool.
Ya, I definitely like how easy to follow it is
it is indeed
Same can be said of Ben's drum solo which follows!
@@povkilla All through this series of videos the recording of the bass is some of the best and clearest I have ever heard.
Charlie Rouse is the truth.
Jesus was an epic carpenter but Charlie Rouse actually created me
That funky head gave me stankface! 😎
great stuff that I miss very much these days

Sorry, but one of the labels that the great Rudy Van Gelder didn't record for was Columbia. The engineer was Frank Laico.

Monk is great. Weird but great!

Wow thanks for posting this did not even know it existed amazing stuff!!
RIP Rudy Van Gelder
Charlie Rouse,Larry Gayle (B),Ben Riley (D).
I lived near Hackensack in 1965. Don't know if I knew about Thelonius Monk then. I was between two births so probably wasn’t thinking of jazz.
Great stuff, thanks for the upload!
I'm sure it felt great to actually have your music and talents appreciated
still love it!!
I know this I have it this is my Time Thank You.
absolutely crazy !
On older recordings, it’s always cool when the bass player just solos a walking bass… so we improvisers can play along with them over a chorus.
C'est chouette d'avoir des films de ça wow
Yes Sir !!!
Just LOVE it!
thanks ^^
Larry Gales had a club in LA, I think it was called LBS. Had Donald Bailey on drums Kurt Lightsy piano and Junior Cook on tenor sax. 70s?
Yes sir! 😎
Genius

Sounds a little bit like "Well ya Need'nt" - but its "Hackensack"
Its a contrafact of "Lady Be Good"
@@dr.brianjudedelimaphd743 I thought it sounded similar to something else as well - and the verdict is still out for me - i can't place the name in my head. But anyhoo, Monk wrote well u needn't too.
What it also sounds like is Dizzy's Night in Tunisia - which predated this song.
Got it - Dizzy's Night in Tunisia - which predated this song.
This is from Monk's Tsar phase
Contrafact of "Lady be Good"
As I listen to Monk and band play I can see Kyrie irving or Earl the Pearl handling the rock
Also recorded by Coleman Hawkins as Rifftide. Check You Tube for video of Trane, Getz, Oscar Peterson playing Rifftide.
