@@AntonioJunior-w6l Brazil is the name of Portugal in South America. Genetically, Portugal has the most relevant genetic mark in the entire Brazilian territory (over 70%), African in second place and indigenous only in third place. Brazilians did not fall from the "Brazil" tree in 1822. Brazilian was the name taken by Portuguese colonizers after independence. You don't need to be afraid of the past. Just get to know him. Those who don't have a past have no future. It doesn't hurt, António🙃

I have 3 children, the oldest has dark hair, very dark brown eyes, dark skin my two yongest have dark blonde hair and hazel eyes, color, that changes with light (like me and my husband) and very white skin. I supose that we have all sorts of origines in our familie and I'm proud of this mixture.
Watching this made me be ever more certain I must be one of the greatest human mutts on this planet, and very proud of it! Besides coming from Portuguese ancestry from the Porto region, on my mother's side, my father has Spanish and Moorish ancestry, and his great grandmother, who was Portuguese from Faro, married a Cantonese man from Macau in the early 19th century, and moved to Ceará, Brazil. His mother, who looked very asian, married a man from Pernambuco state with Dutch ancestry, besides the classic Northeastern caboclo, or Sertanejo, a mixture of native Indigenous groups with African and Portuguese. My mother was from a family proud to be descendent of a famous Indigenous chief known as "Cacique Tibiriçá", as well as French Belgian and the Portuguese ancestors, and the ubiquitous African blood no Brazilian can negate. I love to be as far as genetically possible from the concept of a "pure race".
Portugal was always unrated by other powers, if you read this book wrote by a English man..."The First Global Village - How Portugal Changed the World" you will get admired how the Portuguese and not the "others" have introduced some of the thinks that world knows. Long story short the Portuguese accepts and respects everyone all cultures and learn with them.
Thanks for your comment. I’m from Australia first Europeans to discover (Cristóvão Mendonça East Coast and the Pacheco brothers West Coast Portuguese) and now live in Portugal. I have also read this book, plus many others about the Portuguese discoveries and their significant influence throughout the world. And this over quite a period of time. They are an incredible people, what is over looked is their intelligence and ability to find a way to get a satisfactory outcome. If you like to read about the foundation of Portugal the book First Templar Nation by Freddie Silva. This is an eye opener.
As a Portuguese biologist, I want to congratulate the team on this outstanding work. DNA does serve as a powerful thread that connects us all, transcending borders and uniting people not only within Portugal but across the entire world. It highlights our shared heritage and emphasizes the deep biological ties that bind humanity together. This video is a testament to how interconnected we ALL truly are ❤
@@tumado7304 hey 👋🏼 So, imagine DNA as a “book of stories” that we carry inside us. Each person has pieces of DNA passed down from their ancestors, like chapters written by people who lived before us. Scientists can “read” these chapters using DNA tests. When they find specific pieces of DNA that are common in people from different regions or cultures, they can trace where those pieces came from. For example, if Portuguese people have pieces of DNA that are similar to North African or Roman DNA, it shows that people from those cultures mixed with the ancestors of the Portuguese long ago. This is how we learn about the genetic history of ancient cultures through DNA 🧬 I hope it helped, bud. Stay curious ☺️
@@GracindaMF, I never said you needed to be one to understand the origin of any surname; I was simply referencing the genetic information from the video to highlight the idea that we’re all connected. ♥️
For many years I had a strong desire to go to Portugal, with no understanding why. I made my first visit in 2016 and have been back 4 times. As a New Zealander, it is the furthest place to travel to - exactly opposite sides of the planet. After my first visit, I did a DNA test and found I had Portuguese ancestry. I have been intrigued as to where in my lineage this came from. There has been much speculation that the Portuguese arrived in NZ, 200 years before Abel Tasman officially discovered it. I do wonder if DNA comes with a memory which could explain the pull to visit Portugal.
That is a good point. I too think that our DNA carries a lot information far beyond man's knowledge. With the nano knowledge giving its first steps, in the future we might have some fantastic answers. Best regards
I’m mixed Portuguese and Polish. As far as I know my ancestors were from Cyprus and Slavic countries. Interesting to know the general history of the population although most people are mixed, when we go back to other previous generations.
Not true; the Celts that arrived in the British Isles came from Central Europe, traveling there through the Strait of Dover. The Celtic migration that came to the Iberian Peninsula arrived earlier. They traveled from Central Europe and crossed the Pyrenees Mountains, arriving in Galicia, Asturias and northern Portugal. Some trading did occur between the two over the Atlantic.
@@fbo7147 The Celts who lived in the south of Portugal fled to the British Isles, especially Ireland, when the Arabs invaded the Iberian Peninsula. Excellent tour. I have done it few years ago and you covered all what was emphasized about invasions It is a rich combination and Portuguese are well known for being hard working people wherever they go.
I am of Portuguese descent . Parents from Madeira .My great grandmother was Irish ! On my fathers side ,many many generations ago was of Jewish ancestry. The Jews play a much more important roll than most are willing to acknowledge. Most Portuguese family names like mine ,Pereira, were originally Jews who were compelled to adopt Portuguese names to remain in Portugal. They used mostly names from nature and agriculture. Ribeiro river -Pereira pear tree etc .etc.
They don't really have that big of an impact on portuguese DNA, but that doesn't mean they were irrelevant, far from it. The jewish community was expelled from the kingdom/country a lot of times and, while they in fact had those surnames like Pereira, Oliveira, etc..., it is naíve to think "most portuguese family names like yours were originally jews". That is an absolutely wild conclusion and completely removed from reality. Those are the surnames that became notable for being the most adopted by jewish people because they were incredibly common among the native portuguese population and it would facilitate their integration in portuguese society. Sure, there are places that became notable for having some well-known jewish communities, but they didn't play that important of a role in our society due to the persistance of our kings on getting them out of the country, hence why countries like Netherlands became such powerhouses - they decided to embrace the sephardics into their country and benefited from their activities. Still, regarding your comment, there isn't that big of an influence from the jewish community in Portugal, and those surnames do not represent the jewish influence here. They only decided to utilize them because of how common they were and the really vast majority of people carrying those surnames do not have the slightest influence of jewish DNA in them.
@@Brasilmagic79 yes, I do see a lot of brazilians with jewish ancestry that goes back to spehardic people living in both island groups, Açores and Madeira. I would go as far to say the jews had a bigger impact in Brazil than in Portugal, due to the reasons I've mentioned before. There seems to be this idea that every other portuguese has jewish ancestry but that's really far from reality and genetic studies say the same.

the Azores was uninhabited when the Portuguese discovered the Islands, the settlers were mostly Portuguese but had smaller numbers of African slaves, Moorish Prisoners, Sephardic Jews, Flemish, Italian and other Europeans who were brought or came to settle the Islands as well. The Azorean population is a result of these groups blending into each other, with origins predominately from mainland Portugal with minor influences from these other groups.
Mostly, However since the Azores was uninhabited at the times of discovery, other settlers from Africa and Europe came to the Islands as well, these different groups intermixed over the centuries mostly in the 1500s/1600s Of course that doesn't really differ much from mainland Portuguese because these same groups were also present in Portugal itselfs.

But my Portuguese roots are developed very well. Since I got my first national history lessons in the portuguese school 🏫🎒. I had two afternoon hours. For those who want to know this brave and fine Knight, it's Duarte Pacheco Pereira. This man was outstanding for his time. And combined one biologist, geologist, astronomical, and mathematical. If this isn't enough already, he was one very competent knight for the crown 👑 of Portugal. He gained the title of Marshall, after defending our first settlement in India. Against one combined army of several suranats. About 13-15.000 with war elephants 🐘. With 366 men, only. Then the King ordered him to capture one french Corsair. Who was charged the portuguese coasts constantly. No problem for him. As a Captain of the Royal Navy. So you people know. I have many more very interesting historical facts to tell. If someone wants to know more. I'll be pleased 😀. Happy 🎊 Year

I wonder, what the close ties to England for centuries contributed to the gene-pool and the more recent influx of modern middle europeans, who fled to Portugal in the second world war and stayed there is already a measurable factor.
Cruzados going to the Holy Land did a contribution (long time ago ), but I think is too soon to see all the contributions of the " after the war" or more recent people coming from Asian and East Europe. We need at least 2 more generations On the other hand we sure have a strong african contribution, not only from the Atlas ( mouros) but also from central Africa.
Africans too. Portuguese are also descendants of Africans that came to Portugal and formed mixed families. Padre Antonio Vieira is a distinguished historical figure from a mixed family.
Moura is not the same as Mouro. Moura is a homonym word with two distinct roots and meanings; one from Celtic *MRVOS, the other from Latin maurus. The word "moura" (alternatively, "moira", "maura"; medieval: "mora"), feminine of "mouro", is thought to originate from the Celtic *MRVOS and the Indo-European *mr-tuos that originated in Latin the word mortuus and in Portuguese/Galician the word "morto" ('dead'). Some authors think that the mouras are the deceased.

This video is a testament to how interconnected we ALL truly are ❤
Thank you so much for your kind words ☺️ 🇵🇹
how do this *dna tests* give results with cultures gone for centuries??
You don't have to be a biologist to know that Almeida is NOT a visigothic name...

Best regards
iam Portuguese, and i did love you job about our DNA. tks
I’m mixed Portuguese and Polish. As far as I know my ancestors were from Cyprus and Slavic countries. Interesting to know the general history of the population although most people are mixed, when we go back to other previous generations.
I'm Portuguese and 75 per cent of my DNA is Celtic! And about 75 per cent of the Celts in the British Isles came from what is now called Portugal!
And the rest is Moore
Bro that’s not true… Modern Portuguese are a mix of Celtiberian, Suebi Germanic, Roman, and Berber… 🇵🇹
My father is Ribeiro (like me) and my mother Pereira.
@@CDPF5A lot of them went to the Azores and Madeira, then later immigrated to the U.S. or Brazil.

Would love it if you could do a genetic study on the people of the azores. I was born there and always heard different stories. Ty
the Azores was uninhabited when the Portuguese discovered the Islands, the settlers were mostly Portuguese but had smaller numbers of African slaves, Moorish Prisoners, Sephardic Jews, Flemish, Italian and other Europeans who were brought or came to settle the Islands as well.
The Azorean population is a result of these groups blending into each other, with origins predominately from mainland Portugal with minor influences from these other groups.
The origins are the same❤
Mostly, However since the Azores was uninhabited at the times of discovery, other settlers from Africa and Europe came to the Islands as well, these different groups intermixed over the centuries mostly in the 1500s/1600s
Of course that doesn't really differ much from mainland Portuguese because these same groups were also present in Portugal itselfs.

Great explanation...
Portuguese here from the south and i have greens eyes and blond hair.....

I'm Portuguese with family from Azores. Would love to know how they came to occupy those islands.
I'm from Brazil and my Dna test showed that I'm 86.1% IBERIAN, 8.8% East European and 5.1% Mesoamerican. Funny how DNA works, I'm more Portuguese than a lot of Portuguese born people 😄.

I am Portuguese, and my family is from Lisbon and the Lisbon area. My father was blond, with green eyes, and light skin. His mother's light brown hair with light grey eyes. My mother has light skin, very dark air, and dark eyes. From my maternal side, we have mostly brown hair and brown eyes, with a mix of light and olive skin. I live in Canada. I enjoyed this video, it was well-explained and interesting to listen to. Fascinating information and knowledge about the Portuguese DNA. Thank you!
Thank you for watching ☺️
I’m Algarvian and everybody thinks I’m from Morocco.
Some of our words aren't so different from Moroccan Arabic.
I am from Alentejo and Algarve and I am tall and white. My father was very tall and blond haired. My three daughters are blond haired and has blue eyes. 🤷🏻♀️
My mother's parents were from Portugal on an island and moved to Santa Barbara. CA around 1910.
I have done my ADN test and it has revealed my Y haplogroup is J1/J2 and my X haplogroup is C. Of both my father and mother surnames, some appeared in the video: Santos, Pereira, Costa, Rodrigues.
Bravo, great video
I wonder, what the close ties to England for centuries contributed to the gene-pool and the more recent influx of modern middle europeans, who fled to Portugal in the second world war and stayed there is already a measurable factor.
Not sure about that but my DNA reports almost 80% Iberian, 10% North Africa, 5% Italian, 4% British....and finally 1% Nigerian....
Among a lot of other things i am almost 30% british. Portuguese here from oporto.
The Moors who inhabited the Dolmens of old, before the Muslims, the mystical wish-granting Moors or spirits for disambiguation.
The word refers to the Moors that occupied Portugal for 800 Yrs
@@fatimapastor236 Mouro yes but not Moura. Anyway both words probably had origin from the same root words i mentioned
@@fatimapastor236 Moors did not occupy Portugal for 800 years, it would be 480 for Portugal and 800 for Spain, fank you.
@lordcommandernox9197 it's neither here nor there the Moors were in the Region of both Portugal/Spain for 800 yrs and it's obvious the contribution to our language, food and culture...
Is the DNA from the mainland the same as the islands?
Would you make a video about the history of the Portuguese Islands?
My DNA from Ancestry says that I am 79% from Azores or Madeira islands, 10% Spain...
I am from Brazil and I am also descended from Portugal, also Italy ❤
D'Alen Tejo was the land to which Jews from Spain migrated in 1492. ELIZABETH of CASTILE married FERDINAND of ARAGON, "the Catholic" princes, united Spain, and expelled all the Jews to Porto Calis to be "the new Christians." But they kept the Judaic faith. From there, they moved to the Netherlands and then to Brazil. Thanks to the Catholic church, Cristaos novos (New Christians are Jews) are Jews. They are converted in name only. from there to the Netherlands. The beautiful Synagogue in Amsterdam is Portuguese.
Hi ! I am Brazilian and my Y-dna is R1a : typical Slavic Eastern European! Right, since my greatgrandfather from my father's side was a Polish immigrant ! My grandmother was born in Italy and my mother is mostly of pure 200 years old brazilian portuguese ancestry! I am Brazilian of "pure" European blood I think!!
We Europeans aren't pure. There's no such a thing.

Good video. You forgot to mention the 3 french invasions that gave the most percent of blonde hair and blue/green eyes of the people of the north.
Good video. The genetic and historical part is great, but the part about surnames is completely wrong. Surnames appeared in Portugal in the late Middle Ages (first in noble families) and in some areas only after 1500. You can't trace ancestry using surnames. It's ridiculous.
