“If Drake goes independent, the music industry is done.” or at least that’s what Steve Stoute, a veteran record label exec and former manager of Nas, Mary J. Blige and producer of work by Mariah Carey, Will Smith and Gwen Stefani seems to think. You see - a few months ago, in late July, Steve Stoute had something to say about Drake during a panel discussion at SelectCon, a sports, music and finance entrepreneurship conference. Collaborating with Russ, who recently became an independent artist after choosing not to renew his record deal after it ran its course, the two industry veterans talked first about the pros and cons of staying independent or signing to a label. Russ said: “if Drake posts a picture on the ‘Gram of his new album, link in bio - f-k a link in bio, “new album out” - and he was fully independent, Drake will make $10 million a week for f-ing 60 weeks.” Steve Stoute added: “I said this before, Drake is about to come out in the next six months, Drake is about to get the biggest bag in the history of the music business by far. Both A and B, they don’t want that to happen. Because the day that happens, they might as well close the business down.”
You see - over the last decade or two, really since the birth of major streaming services, the logistics of distributing music have become massively less complicated than in the past - without the complications of manufacturing, distributing and selling physical music media, a large piece of the utility of the record label is lost. And with it being the case it’s almost always more profitable to own your own masters rather than to allow a record label to possess them, the list of successful independent musicians and independent labels has been growing rapidly for the last decade. Hell, it’s become almost a requirement in hip hop to blow up before you sign - after all, FL Studio only costs $200 and if XXXTentacion could get billions of streams after recording most of his early music with a Blue Snowball, why can’t just anyone do it? Well, to be honest, it remains the case that the vast majority - more than 95% of mainstream musicians are signed to major labels, despite clearly available financial incentives to hold your own masters and distribute your own music. So while Drake may be able to use his massive gravitational pull as the best selling artist of the streaming era to go independent and still make a killing, is Steven Stoute spitting facts when he claims that Drake going independent would cause a mass exodus of artists leaving their record labels? Or does he just want to promote independent artistry to prospective clients, being the CEO of UnitedMasters, a company that provides advertising, brand partnerships and distribution to independent artists? Let’s look at some actual numbers and facts about the independent music industry and hopefully learn a bit about when independent artists can profit - and when they don’t.

Is it a good a idea to start off independently as an artist...how can you promote your content to extent of being recognized on a larger platform..,what steps to take, as in owning your masters and other staff....

If Drake went independent the industry would first try to destroy him. When that doesn’t work, Drake would be known and considered a leader to a new generation of artists no longer in need of a record label. He would both be an icon and literally a game changer.
The leader of a new generation of artists that aren't in need of a label? Idk if he would be the "leader" so much as he would inspire more people to be indie. There are already indie artists that inspire others. Not saying if he did, that said inspiration wont be a big shift but its already happening.
MAOI inspire aka follow the leader...
Kanye already did it
@TreysCloset i agree, kanyes numbers arent that good
I mean they could easily destroy him by talking about all the teenage girls who's involved with.
Drake is bigger than these labels. They’ll try and put him down, but he’s too big
They said the same about Michael and Prince and look what happened
Владимир Чилингиров what did happen? Because honestly I know those 2 and have no clue whom they were signed to or if they had any label issues.
@@bendy113 MJ and I believe Prince were signed by Sony and both publicly denaunced their labels and had major issues afterwards (and conspiracy theories say this led to their death). I am no expert so you should research more yourself
He isn’t bigger. They are what allowed him to become so large. He is tied in deeper than any artist
Why do you think he’s big? Cuz the label, the only reason why he won’t go independent is cuz he’ll actually have to put effort in his music cuz the industry does all that shit for him and you can’t deny that. He’s too deep and he don’t care
Then, the OVO house will have to work overtime..Drake would be a billionaire for REAL though!
what is the OVO house doing
they are his team, with managers, producers
, ghostwriter, its also a label, partynextdoor is or was in!

Because MJ & Prince.. 👀
He does tho, he will never sell 750k-900k first week without them... And he cares way too much about his legacy as the highest selling artist of all time so I don't think he will go full independent soon. But let's see
Drake understands inside relationships and networking . Going indie would destroy all those built relationships. He’ll just take the big check from a label .
Hes drake tho hes already established so those ties will still know him from his body of work
he could easily hire some producers and audiotechnicians by his own. i bet the labels dont pay them well
micheal olusanya hes going to upset those people when he’s not making money with them . The industry is grimy
Michael Steiner I’m not talking about music creators I’m talking the Executives behind the scenes
@@DannewK Unless he corporatizes himself and gets managers, financial managers, lawyers etcetera, because the leg work the label does would be so incredibly hard as an independent, he'd be risking his own money as capital, contacting and paying artists independently too. He also samples a lot, he'd have to have a team of well paid executive lawyers as an independent to purchase copyright sanctions and contracts, which is a lot easier when your label has the connections, credibility and power to gain copyright. Basically yes his income and percentages of profits would increase, but so would his expenses, work, and he'd probably miss out on some features he would easily get with a label. Drake is textbook labelled artist, huge features, mass releases and a large network of wealth associated with him. He wouldn't survive independent, at least continuing his current music.
If Drake went independent, I can’t even imagine how much money he would make 😂
600mil in 60 weeks
GAGAGAGAGAGA!!! I want to cut my toe nails... NEVER! I am the feet UA-camr. Thanks for being a fan, dear aidan
@Black God yea, we would hear true allegations of all the teenagers he's messing with
@Black God I don't care if he goes independent, he has a history of inappropriate behavior with underaged girls and he needs to be held accountable.
@Black God he didn't know but he still touched her *without her consent* and once she told him that she was 17yo he still kissed her on the lips *without her consent* . That's not the only thing tho, he was texting Millie Bobby Brown when she was 14yo, she said he gave her advice on boys and when asked to elaborate, she said, "That stays in the DM's". He also took her out on two dinner dates and was texting her about how he "missed her so much". He was texting Billie Eilish when she was still 17yo, he dated a girl who was 18yo but they met when she was 16yo, so he either groomed her or he was having sex with her while she still underaged. He has a *history with underaged girls* . I'm not tryna paint him out to be that, that's what he is but Drake fans don't want to see it, like R Kelly fans didn't want to see it. He might not be sadistic, kidnapping girls and peeing on them but he definitely has shown a pattern of inappropriate behavior with underaged girls.
Drake is really close to being independent. His music is completely under his own label OVO Sound now, ever since the release of 2018's Scorpion got him out of his deal with Young Money / Cash Money (YMCMB). He then licenses this music out to Republic Records. The thing is, OVO Sound is still under Warner Music and thus it isn't an independent label. If OVO was spun off into its own company, Drake would be an independent artist who just uses Republic Records as a distribution and marketing service.
Hmm.. 🔑🔑🔑
Also birdman's cashmoney/lil wayne's young money owns all of drake's albums from Scorpian and before.. which is also partenered with Universal
Same with Taylor she is also almost independent and owns her masters from Lover onwards under her own home label TS Records but is signed with Universal /Republic for Music Distribution .
He would probably get that 500mil he’s been looking for and fall back to the 6
They’d kill him like they did mj and prince when they got their masters back
Eric T Drake is smarter than Michael and Prince. He’s got the music industry by the nuts
Anton Brown drake is all business, he is smart, he can find his own path
He’s also half Jew so I’m sure he’s surrounded by money and enough connections to be his own man

True
If ‘independent labels’ take over like this, wouldn’t the industry inevitably become the same as before and a few of them will just rise to become the new major labels?
EXACTLY. Drake has his own label and can distribute himself. He's extremely rich and can still make money.
If Drake went independent: OVO will dissolve, and Partynextdoor, Roy Woods, Majid Jordan, DVSN, and Baka will be able to give their craft their all and not be held back by OVO and Drake
Damn that would be So good
You forgot Plaza
And partynextdoor 😭
You know what I think ... I think drake Saved them ... Ya they don’t get the light that drake has BUUUT they are definitely getting Paid ... For example .. Anything Party put for drake ... Party still getting paid to this day since 2013 when he signed to OVO .. why? Because of How big drake is ... Take Care .. IYRTITL .. NWTS .. Views Are all on the billboard still ... and that goes for any OVO member who Gave or help drake make hits ... One Dance .. Controlla ..
@@paulvasquez7897 yeah he definitely helped them all. Gave them a likkle 1 2 songs together. But if you did deep behind the scenes and read about what he did to the Weeknd and PND, especially The Weeknd, you'll see how he treats people when they seem like a "threat" to him.

Bruh his shady behaviour around minors 💀
Deadass wondered why he didn’t right after scorpion instead of a Re-up with Republic
I don’t think he went to republic I’m pretty sure he went to universal themselves and he claims to own his master which I doubt but universal does own cash money so maybe they did him a favor
He sold his soul what they look like letting they most valuable slave have his freedom they need him to get more slaves to turn against God
@@jasonalpha7136 No one owns their masters in the music business Jay Z said he did he clearly doesn't neither does Drake. And he did resign with Republic after his first album deal got done after Scorpian.
Jay InTheBx idk about republic I heard it was with universal and I doubt drake is dumb enough to sign off his masters when he had the option to keep everything after scorpion
If drake go indie he will slowly lose commercial buzz. Major label have to advantage to pump you through all the media sources and connection. Which has a greater chance of persuading the perception of an artist
True.
He will always have a buzz do to his state as of now... look at Tory lanez, he’s independent and even with the shooting incident, people will forget about Tory in 2 years max, but not drake

He’s too big of a sellout to go independent. They basically own drake
Sellout to who? If being independent makes HIM more money then who exactly is he selling out?
Drake can try to go independent but anyone smart knows it’s not the best move because of how dirty the music industry is look at Tory for an example he went independent and is looking at 22 years who knows what the can get on drake
Definitely
@@theyloveks6349 that was tory's fault tho
Drake is Jewish
he won’t go independent. he’s stuck in the matrix
He cares way too much about his legacy as the n°1 selling artist of all time. And he will NEVER sell as much as he does without the industry push.
Mae Lerose when his albums drop it’s on everything, if he goes indie he has the capability to push his own music and then use the gravity to get the snowball moving. And hopefully at that point he releases stuff he wants to release rather than pop garbage
@@maelerose5807 Drake don't need much push anymore. Whatever he drops is an international hit.
Mae Lerose You're wrong Drake has a huge fan base and that's not down to the labels. It don't matter how much they push it, if nobody likes it they're not listening. Drake has only maintained his reign at the top for so long because of his talent and adaptability. You may not be a fan of his but that doesn't mean hundreds of millions of other people aren't.
This whole video boils down to how you define indie really. Collaborating doesn't mean you're not indie. And as an indie artist, you can still work with mainstream artists as well. If you have a core fan bass that's totally against mainstream it might not be the best decision to do that. To me being indie just means you own the rights to your music, or partial rights with your collaborators. Finding collabs where I live is hard. I live in a little suburban down with a bunch of snobby people now. I'd almost be better off as an artist going back to where I'm from but I left for a reason and I'm not trying to go backwards in life. I just keep the faith that I'll find some people to work with eventually. It's all I really can do at this point. But I do have all the gear to make professional radio ready content, not that you can't do that with a computer now, but I like hardware for some things. It just has a different feel and for me it's better.
I wasn’t aware there were multiple definitions. I understood independent to mean “not signed to a major label”. Working with a “mainstream”/signed artist has no bearing on that. There are indie artists who don’t own their masters too, due to having been signed prior for example. Which is why now there’s a lot of talk about artists buying/receiving their masters back.
The same thing that is happening to Tory Lanez will happen to Drake. They won't let such of a big artist go independent. They'll tarnish your name.
Bro he shot meg in the foot fuck you mean?
Stop bringing up tory in this context. He shot his girl in the foot, nobody else did this to her. As if anyone would give a fuck about him owning his masters.
i heard daylyt talking about Tory Lanez situation being a set up too.. ua-cam.com/video/G06wg5mz1BM/v-deo.html

If drake went independent his wake would be held in raptors stadium cause the powers at be would kill him
Steve Stout is not just an internet Guru, he was a top record exec all through the 90s. He knows what he's talking about. As a new artist, one should definitely listen to him or someone like him. He's breaking the chains that have been placed on artists for many years.
If drake goes independent all of a sudden you would see a lot of his shady behaviour around minors come to light that his label is burying
He's been independent since 2019. His last 2 Albums/projects were released on OVO.....most likely with a distribution deal on DLDT through Republic/Universal.
As Birdman said: We foreva in bidnezz wit Drake😂😂 aint gonna happen
Bruh if X lived on it would’ve been interesting to see how he could’ve changed the industry by owning his masters/staying independent + flourishing for the years to come if he was given the opportunity. He signed a 10 million album distribution deal only at the age of 20 and was only going up from there if he had lived on 😔 x talks about being independent in his rare/underrated interview with pigeons n planes that he did while he was on the jail phone while going viral in early 2017
@@NostalgicHearts idk X was the newest/most innovative artist we've seen in the genre/game in the last decade at such a young age as well pretty appealing to people who use the internet/ his generation & to anyone who liked real music too. also got kendrick lamars cosign on his debut album. he was doing much more than well before he passed, he had debut #1 spot all while owning his masters/being independent
you also have to think about that he only had a year and a half at most in the spotlight thats from jan 2017 to the middle of 2018 when he got killed, if he had lived for a couple more months he would've moved to Cali after dealing with the outcome of his court case & if he went to jail he would've only got more famous, and if he beat it he would've been less black balled by the industry (which he didnt even need, the music would've spoke for itself) and would've made better music thats more universal while in California living his best life he dreamed for as a artist. If X had lived on he would've been revolutionary by the messages he left behind and by reading the tweets which is like a journal he always spoke stuff into existence.
Anyways, if X had lived on for a year or even a few more at least he would've remained on the top of his generation/class as well as competing with everyone else (uzi admitted he looked as x as competition, kanye admired x probably wouldve worked with him x would be doing ye a favor in providing good music lol, probably work with the weeknd n just grow as a artist / leader of a generation, but sadly that never happened because he didnt move militant since he was just a 20 yo who didnt account for the outside as much (really wish he was more paranoid or just a homebody after hearing on podcast from his home engineer that x would go to the movies with his engineer and mom with no security to then get a mob of fans surrounding around him like thats not safe or even fun)
@@NostalgicHearts Definitely lol what your describing sounds like juice world more than X.
Anybody that thought that probably didnt give x a true listen and just wrote him off due to ignorance, his debut album got co signed by kendrick lamar when it dropped telling ppl to play it and that he had it on repeat(got co signs from many artists before his death like asap rocky, joey badass, jaden smith) & many more after that were scared to cosign him because of his public image/ cancel culture . Also remember on joe buddens podcast he talked about when him and his girl listened to 17 when it dropped while they were on vacation crying to it because they could relate/connect to some of the tracks on 17 and joe said something like after listening he knew x wasnt a act/gimmick. X was a divisive artist to the masses/sheep but majority of the people supported him or ignored him he just had SJWs bashing him as well, the way media portrayed like many didnt like him but that was only a small crowd compared to the giant one he amassed way before his death solely off of using the internet as a tool, you have to remember he went viral off his mugshot and was dealing with court/the law clearing his name until his death while making hits, sadly he didnt get to live on to prove the world how much he changed/evolved from what they tried portraying him in the media
ua-cam.com/video/2EpBqtqf8Go/v-deo.html "Time consumes the image,
Difference changing in the distance
Time consumes our image" anyways LLJ man sorry for overexplaining, x was the epitome of misunderstood as a artist in his own words but was understood by many that had to capacity to not be narrow minded anyways have a good day

Can you imagine the world / Industry if drake, billie eilish and bad bunny goes independent? ... daaaaaamn!
Drake already owns his masters now. He has distribution deals now just like Xxxtentacion did
I literally couldn’t comprehend this question before seriously, thanks for this vid
OVO is a music sweatshop. Name an OVO artists other than PND that has a gold record or better.

If Drake went independent they would def try to sabotage him unless he kept them satisfied someway or another .. if I was him I would go independent and duck off into the jungle in Cuba and set up a nice house a record studio there lmao
nah..i think they would still find you lol
My interpretation of Drake going independent is that he wouldn’t be accepted by it. Independent hip-hop is a counter reaction to mainstream hip-hop, which is what Drake personifies. But hopefully if he does then maybe him and nikelus F could collab again. Lol imagine Lil Ugly Mane and Drake mashup?

What he said is wrong the record label dosent need you,you need the label more for example 90% of signed artists wouldn’t have blown up if it wasn’t for labels.
i think with as popular as drake is, a move like that would not only inspire a wave of incoming artists to do the same, but i have a sense that record labels would get desperate for artists and the flaws that come with them would be exposed.
Drake can't go independent, J Prince wouldn't let that happen.
He’s not signed to rap a lot. J Prince would still have a hand in his career even if he goes independent
@@Wave_MOMT It's not the point of him being signed to rap a lot, he has ties to J. Prince, who will not let that happen since he wants to extort Drake in any way that he can, which can only benefit him if he has a proper
record deal. He's still bragging till this day that his son discovered Drake, which then led to him backing Drake and defending him, those are the mob ties that he has.
SectorJoker do you understand how extortion works? All that it requires is him having income. Him being signed, once again has no bearing. Both J Princes are far too serious for him to turn his back on them at this point, deal or not. If anything him going independent is in their best interest, he’ll rely on them for protection/clout. It’s alright to not understand how the industry works
@@Wave_MOMT Hilarious, so it would be smart for him to go independent instead of signing another $50 Million dollar deal with a major label? Plus factor in the amount of child support he has to pay, the cost of his taxes, his property, mixing and mastering, buying beats, features, etc. I don't think he'll be paying for all of that on an independent level, let alone be able to properly market himself, the label gives you exposure and without them you die out. I doubt anyone knows how the industry actually works, unless you're higher up in the music industry, which i doubt anyone commenting under this video is, so not even you.
SectorJoker you forgot to factor in how much more money he’d be making. Smh. Take care

you're voice is so soothing
It’s more so the butterfly effect of drake going independent that would effect the industry
Gorgeous background music btw
beautiful vid as always
Would Drake still be able to keep his deal with Apple if he goes independent? Or is it possible that Drake is going to not renew his record deal and instead Have his music drop on OVO and OVO signs a deal with Apple?
I'm just rambling idk but I can see the whole apple thing going big
If he does they gon try put him in a tough place so he decides to get back to a label or become irrelevant
If he went independent around views and with the success of more life and scoripoin yeah the industry would be in trouble but I think now it wouldn't be in his best interests as the exposure provide helps him venture off with notoriety in other business opportunities. Good take though.
If Drake went independent it would be up there with Universal
Def gonna subscribe to Nebula when I get paaiiiiddddd.
Bruh Drake owns his own label. Releasing on his own label is still independent.
Probably get cancelled Industry controls to much of media drake doesn't
For some reason, I thought that this video was suggesting that Drake was going to do a Kanye and run for president
Steve stoute was right Drake sign for 400 million
Drake will be the new JAY-Z & KANYE
If drake went independant he would date MORE 18 yr olds cuz he wont have a label to stop him anymore
Blah blah blah
Hi, I'd like to know why you still upload in 720p? I think don't think you have to use 60FPS in your kind of animations. But why not at least 1080p?
Can you a "Understanding Russ"
I see Drake watching this in his before released car. 🔥
Think abt this though, what if drake starts buying these rappers or starts his own label or even starts buying these labels
Drake couldn't go independent if he tried. Making his own beats and writing his own lyrics? He can do neither... I'd like to see him survive
You dont know what going independent means I see
@@saidixit5894 I''m talking bout in the skill level. Not the obvious way lmaooo
Jacob Muir he doesn’t need to make his own beats wtf 🤣 and he can obviously rap even if you think recently he’s been using ghost writers when he first started he must’ve been able to rap
Big fan of your content - a request: could you do Slug? Rhymesayers / Felt ? - seen nothing on the man n he a legend imo
Drake could never... They would destroy him.
I was thinking about this yesterday
A video of the wu tang clan would be dope
Great info, gonna make a wiseful decision from now on.
imagine kendrick being independent
already doesn't release that much
