    i bought one of these from my local archery shop, but the only available poundage at the time is 60 pounds, a little hard to pull at the beginning, but now, not a problem at all, i have to say it is a brilliant bow, very accurate and very consistent easy to operate, thanks for this video really helpful.

    I had a bow similar to that in the early 70's, also 45#, and I think you will find it has a max draw of 30 to 31 inches. Mine was made by York Archery in Kansas City, MO. Very very similar! Enjoy! (BTW) excellent for woods hunting!

    what are you thoughts on re-curve vs longbow
    i feel that recurves are much less forgiving on your finger release which can be hard for beginners

    When i shoot this bow at 10M the top limb blocks the target where i aim. Is that something to do with how I'm shooting it or is it just how the bow is?

    Hey Jim...great review of the Black Bear. Local archery shop turned me on to the Ragim line of bows. There's not much in the way of information about the Company, but what there is I researched. Ragim seems to be a pretty solid Co, as you stated in the video, out of Italy. As a matter of fact they manufacture some Bow Limbs for the bigger companies out there like....you guessed it...Bear Archery. Unfortunately I have not picked one up as of yet, but that's simply because my first bow had to be a Bear Grizzly, and I def. plan to. Ragim is def. in my top 3 Bow Manufactures along with Bear and Martin, that make Quality Bows, Traditional Wooden Recurves, Where the price point is good, and have bows that are just good looking. Id like to see some reviews on some of the bows in their "Top Class Line" like the Bobcat, White Tiger, and Black Panther...the latter of the two being a couple of sexy looking bows(Yep...I am one that thinks bows can be sexy : ) )

    Thanks for great review. As someone who is very new to archery, I am wondering if you briefly outline what I would be giving up by buying a bow in this price range. You mentioned hand shock/lack of feedback and I feel it visually boring. Can you add any other features that may be missing? I am not trying to degrade this bow, just trying to learn.
    Thanks

      I owned the Ragim Taiga. I sold it just recently. It was a decent shooter, not very fast but extremely light in the hand if that's something you like. Good bow just for plinking and nothing serious.Stacks something fierce after 27" or so. I wouldn't suggest it for anyone with a draw much longer than that. Beautiful bow as well:)

      May run into problems, it's a bit of a shorter bow. Can pinch your fingers on draw as the angle of the string will get smaller. Not quite sure though, you might want to find a local shop where you could try different bows

      I had a matrix at 40lbs with a 66" limb span. very forgiving and very enjoyable to shoot with. aside from the cheap looks, it was honesty as good as any bow I shot since. my friend has had his for nearly 2 years with no issues from regular shooting

    Replace the string immediately and file the nocks a bit (mine had sharp edges), other than that, this bow has been shooting reliably for me for well over a year. Fibre glass finish is starting to chip around the front, but I'm rough on the thing. I'm quite attached to the thing actually :-)

  • @thecakeredux
    @thecakeredux 4 роки тому +2

    I got a 40# Black Bear as my first bow after watching this video and I couldn't be happier. I like the chunky handle as well, I have quite large hands and it fits them perfectly.
    My only worry is my draw length, I measured it only after I got the bow (with the bow) and it comes to 29.5", will that cause any issues with the bow? I've read that it's not too much of an issue to overdraw traditional recurves, but I'm very inexperienced. I could probably choose a different anchor to reduce my draw length, but after some experimenting I have a very "right" feeling about it (not only from the resulting groups, but the calm feeling you get before a good shot), so it would probably throw me back quite a bit.
    Anyways, great video, thank you very much.

    • @AW-hg3pc
      @AW-hg3pc Рік тому +1

      pretty late reply, but in case someone else is wondering. I cant speak for 29" but my draw is 33" and altho i dont own this particular bow i have some 62" models and they are very uncomfortable at my draw. I think 29-30 is doable if being compact is worth alot to you. If its comfort you are after, pick something longer.

    • @thecakeredux
      @thecakeredux Рік тому

      @@AW-hg3pc Fair enough. Consider listening to this fellow shot, even though to this day I'm happy with my bow, it's still the only one I own, so I may lack comparisons and just don't miss what I don't know.

    Hey Jim! I want to say thanks for all the help you've given me, I've improved a lot with my accuracy since I've been taking your tips. I was wondering what arrows you would recommend for recurve traditional archery? I've had people tell me wooden are the best and others say that aluminum is the best way to go. (Really confusing) thanks!

    • @MerlinArchery
      @MerlinArchery  9 років тому

      Well just to make things more complex i use carbon lol. At the end of the day the choice is yours, it's all about what feels right for you. Woods are great and cheap but you don't get the consistency of say aluminium, but aluminium bends which carbon does not but carbon tends to be more expensive... as long as they are the right spine and they are straight your on to a winner. i hope that helps J Houser any other questions feel free to drop me an email

      Juai nott? Well I've had this bow for over 6 months now and I have had no issues so far.
      The thing that I notice is that the fiberglass has very small fingerprint marks where I'm holding the bow.

    • @thecloudies
      @thecloudies 11 днів тому

      As a guide, the arrow goes on the side that the string rolls off your fingers. So, for right handed, the string rolls of to the left, therefore you put the arrow on the left. Its the mechanics of how a bow poundage, the draw length and the spine of the arrow (its bendiness) should be matched. One subject to look up is "The archers paradox"............

      Well in the case of which bow you should get, get one that appeals to you, is comfortable to draw back and shoot, and you also have to take getting a matching set of arrows, i.e. you have to take grain (good starting point is 10 grains per pound of draw weight. 45# draw weight= 450 grain arrow) and spine weight into consideration

      Nuttn Much That's what I was thinking as well, especially on a faster recurve such as the black bear.

      On this very same bow, I use 500 spine 31" carbon arrows with 100 grain tips and 4,75" turkey feathers.
      Perfect match, fly like bullets.
      Because my arrows are 31", I can't use heavier tips with those 500s, as the dynamic spine would start getting too weak.

    Awesome review Jim, I was looking for a review for a Ragim black/brown bear for a long time. I've got myself a bucktrail blackhawk as my first bow (several months ago) and I'm looking to buy a inexpensive quality recurve as my next bow. I am considering either Bucktrail Antelope or Ragim Black Bear. Do you have any advice on that?
    Also, would you consider doing a review for a Bucktrail Antelope bow? Because honestly I couldn't find one on youtube and I think it would extremely benefit beginner archers.
    Thank you
    PS: at the end you said it is a *58 inch longbow* :D

      Don't know whether it's much help but I brought the Antelope from merlin as my starter bow. It's absolutely lovely to shoot, and I get lots of compliments on how nice it looks. It's a smooth draw in which the poundage build-up feels very linear (which I like).
      Best bet is to go to merlin and try both out tbh.

      Thanks, the problem is that I live in Ireland so I'd have to book a flight to get to one of the merlin shops...
      Anyway, I got myself a ragim black bear and I really like it too. It looks similar to bear grizzly which I totally love.

      He was probably drawing to less than 28 inches, I draw this exact same 45lb bow to 29 inches and I have to use 500 spine arrows with 100gn points.

    Hi Jim, I really liked your review, quite informative. So first of all, thank you for your uploads and your work.
    I have a question related to the size of this bow...
    I am quite tall (6ft2), and I am currently shooting with a 70" recurve bow. I can see that many mono-bloc bows are 58". Will it be a problem for me to use this kind of bow, with such a different size ? Thank you, and good luck with this great channel of yours !

      What is your draw length? I've had the black bear for a few months now. My drawl length is only 28, but even when I pull it back to my ear (which is about 30 inches in total) I do not notice any stacking. I think this bow is safe up to 30' draw length at the very least

      Hey man, thx for your answer, my draw length is 30.5"...I am going to try a 58" Ragim Black Bear at the end of the week, to see if I feel comfortable with this kind of bow... What limbs do you practice with ? 40# ? More ?

      That's right, I got a 40# black bear. Still working on my strength with it, I'm fairly new. When I'll be able to hold the bow at full draw for at least 30 seconds without any kind of shaking, I will start to use that bow full time. It will probably take few more weeks.
      I personally do not see the point of using a more then 40# bow for target practice or 3D. Especially a fast bow like the Ragim bear series, I've calculated that my bow at 40# spits arrows at over 160 feet per second (9.1gpp arrows) which is quite impressive for a entry level priced bow like this. I'm just working on my form and release right now.
      Anyway, event at your draw length I am fairly sure that you won't notice any stacking, because I just drew the bow behind my ear (which would be at the very least 30 inches) and I think there was a bit of stacking at the very end, but then again, you can go for lower poundage limbs. If not, well you can go for something different. I also got the Bucktrail blackhawk 68' inch flatbow at 35# that jim has reviewed. It is a excellent bow for such a low price. And there is no stacking whatsoever with it right up to 32 inches as far as I know. Or even the Ragim Wolf flatbow is also great beginner bow

      Vccine Thanks for all these informations mate. Indeed, I've heard that the Bucktrail Blackhawk was great for its price range, and a good long bow for beginners... But it's been a few days now that I am thinking about acquiring a Samick Sage (take-down recurve bow)... somehow this bow keeps popping on my researches and appears to be an interesting bow...
      I am practicing bare bow shooting, and I think it might be a good bow for me...
      For tall people wandering about the pros and cons of using a quite short bow (58", 60", 62"), I'll post my feelings about the Ragim Black Bear, or anyother that I'll try.

      You are correct. The Samick Sage is probably in the list of top 3 bows in the world under 150 Dollars. Considering that it is 62 inches long (which is still very compact) it should have no stacking at all at 30 inch draw, so it might be even a better choice for you. Not mentioning it is takedown and you can change the limb poundage. I probably would've bought it myself, but there are no european distributors of Samick goods and I would have paid like additional 50 euros for shipping. Could not afford that.
      Bottom line is that both bows are great but I would say that samick sage is slightly more versatile
