Since I did the stretching and mounting of cross-stitch for a framing shop I can offer a little bit of advice. The step you left out was the measuring to make sure the borders were even. Pins are good but never leave them in the work , you can follow the lines in the Aida cloth to keep it straight. We used fabric glue ( Sobo is the name of the product we used. As for the corners, we trimmed them diagonally so it was completely flat.
I hope these suggestions might help you in your future projects. I'm in the USA , cross-stitch was all the craze here in the 70's and we literally framed thousands of cross-stitch pieces. I did my share of stitching back then too. 😉
I suspect the glue you used was archival-safe, Daphne Stamey. If you want to use tape, there are acid-free tapes you can use that artists use when mounting their work. That way if your grandchildren inherit a piece you stitched and they want to re-mount they could without dealing with nasty aged yellow masking tape. And I agree about the pins--especially in humid climates they could rust and leave marks over time. (I realize this comment is from 2 years ago, but the content is evergreen.)
Thank you so much indeed! This is the type of framing I was looking for because it allows me to unmount the FO After a couple of months or when necessary to wash it and then mount again and again!!!!!! Greetings from Varese Italy
Thank you for this great tutorial! After 40+ years of stitching, I finally framed my first piece. It came out perfectly until it was time to fit it into the frame with the pins! They actually bent and the piece fit snugly, so I left it. The next time I think I will use flat head pins. Again, thank you!!
Ive never thought about sand paper! What a great idea! And the pins are great for holding it in place and getting it on the board just right! I'm learning a lot, even after so many years of doing this. i don't think I will use the sticky board anymore. thanks!
I have a wedding anniversary piece I made for a neighbor and I am glad to see you video. i happen to hvae a black foam piece and small little pins. i just need to buy masking tape. thanks! great idea
thank you for the easiest to follow tutorial on this! I forgot a couple of those steps on my last piece which is why it was so much harder than before, I shall set this tutorial aside for easy reference 😀
I'm excited to try this, because framing seems more complicated and I like that this kind of presents the project as a canvas. I've used custom framing before and it's super expensive and incredibly costly to then ship to someone. I feel confident I can use this method and then easily sell and ship my pieces. Thank you!
It's actually the easiest tutorial for mounting cross-stitch projects! Or, maybe it's just the one that suits me! Either way, I've tried it and I was really satisfied. The only different thing I did was using 3mm foam board, as this was easiest to find at a local store. In case you go for this thickness be careful while placing the needles, because they can pierce the surface of the board and probably your fabric. ~ Highly recommended, especially for new stitchers! ~
Excellent tutorial! I have a question though. Do you remove the pins when you want to actually place the project in a frame or leave the pins in place?
Very helpful video. Thank you. How are finished pieces added to lunch tins etc? I'm doing Disney Cross stitch but in the magazine it doesn't say how to add pieces to finish them off, only pictures of them on bags and tins etc
I measure the piece including any fabric that I might want showing as a border and buy a frame from ebay, or amazon to fit the size and cut your foam board to match. You can't always get the exact size you want, but if you have enough fabric around the piece (which I admit to not always having), you can fudge it a little.
OMG - I cannot even begin to describe the mess I have made when trying to mount my cross stitched work in the past! You have made it look so easy. THANKYOU I will let you know how I get on with your Christmas SAL.
I always wondered how this is done and thanks to a person on fb I found this video :) Thank you :) I just ordered the my first Hello Deer SAL and want to display it so when done, can you tell me the size of the foam board I should go for so that I buy it
Hi Maria, are you in our Facebook group? The finished stitched sizes are on the website so in terms of the foam board I would suggest approx 2cm extra on every side.
Looks like an easy way to mount my cross stitch. But what do you do with the pins when you want to frame it? Do the pins stay in? I know my picture framer will be a bit puzzled as to what to do with pins. Thanks for any advice.
You can leave the pins in and measure a frame around it all. You can tape the fabric down to the mount. You can stitch the fabric around the back of the mountboard too. Some people also glue the fabric down at the back. : )
thanx fer the vid... makes it seem so simple.... I'm curious... u said u wash ur piece b4 framing but i only saw u spraying it... did u actually wash it? Been thinking of "setting" my colors with pre-rinse of vinegar... is that a good idea or not... especially on reds where the color tends to run...♪♫♪
Hi, the spray was to make the piece ever so slightly damp to help with the ironing. I've made a separate video all about how I wash my finished pieces. If you click on all videos within my channel, it'll pop up. Hmm, I've never heard of vinegar before I'm afraid. I would just gentle wash it in luke warm water : )
I guess this video was filmed years ago but I just discovered it. I was a custom picture framer for years and the only thing I would like to see you change is the kind of tape you use on the back. Masking tape is not acid free so in time it might damage the fabric. I hope I don’t sound critical...not my intention at all.
Attention: Advanced cross stitchers, I cross stitch The Nativity which has five panels and a frame that you have to order. I need a video showing how to mount something like that. Any helpers???
@@CaterpillarCrossStitch sometimes I wonder if they just look up a particular subject and dislike all the videos they can find. It’s a strange hobby but who am I to judge? 😉

I've looked at a few tutorials, they tend to be way longer. This was clear, concise, and I got all the information I needed. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for your feedback!
This post proves the beauty of UA-cam! I am a recent follower and was able to learn from a three year ago video! Thank you!

I always use flat head pins, they never fit into a frame properly otherwise :)

Thanks for watching and for your comment Molly. Yes to the foam board, I've pierced through a couple of times! : (
I need some advice on ideas to frame a cross stitch that’s not centered. Could I glue/ sew original to a piece of cloth to get it evenly centered?
Yes, that would definitely work!
Excellent tutorial! I have a question though. Do you remove the pins when you want to actually place the project in a frame or leave the pins in place?
Toya Paugh I think she leaves them there. That’s probably why she mentioned she used yellow and white. I’m curious what if she removes the pins~
We usually would leave them in!

Have you tried using some acid free double sided tape maybe?
beautiful work congratulations.
Very nice video, well done ✅ thanks for sharing it 👍🌸💐
Thanks so much for watching!
Such a helpful video!! Clear, precise instructions, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
How do you go about framing it afterwards, do you need to get it done professionally? Or can you buy ready made frames that fit around a mount board?
I measure the piece including any fabric that I might want showing as a border and buy a frame from ebay, or amazon to fit the size and cut your foam board to match. You can't always get the exact size you want, but if you have enough fabric around the piece (which I admit to not always having), you can fudge it a little.
I've always framed them myself. You can take them to a local framer - they're sometimes the best and most experienced : )
I wonder if you can buy nice decorative pins.
How close together do you place the pins? I saw the image in the video, but I couldn't really tell how far apart they were.
About an inch part :)

Could I use steel flat head pins instead so they lay flat instead of being so visable?
Yes you could do !
This was so helpful. Thank you!
This helped so much! Thanks!
Wow this is the best tutorial ive seen. Cant wait to try this brilliant 👍👍

I just use sticky felt and put it on the back and frame it. It works and looks nice.
Great idea!
Do you leave the pins in when u frame
I do yes
I guess I would have to try this at some point, I have never tried cross stitching whatsoever
Oh you should give it a go! You can stitch on almost anything!
Great tutorial! Really easy to follow.
Thanks for watching!
Hi what are your thoughts on stitching the back of the cross stitch to frame?
Hi Barb, great question. Its a fantastic method to keep the fabric in place and with the same tension. Just takes a little longer!
This is GENIUS! Can’t wait to try it. 🎉
Glad it helped!

Yes I do leave the pins in and gently stretch the fabric out while I'm pinning : )

We have! Here's our video on how to create a cross stitch cushion: ua-cam.com/video/5dj3j2zT3I0/v-deo.html

Does the foamboard need to be acid free?
We would recommend that it is!
My problem is getting mount board to put the finished piece into the frame. It's very often to thick

Would you be able to get in touch with the designer directly for advice? I'm afraid we're unfamiliar with this design :)
Seriously, why would anyone bother to dislike this? Are they offended by thread?!
Haha, there are always some people who dislike all videos for some strange reason!

What's YOUR top tip for finishing off your cross stitch pieces? Sally x
I prefer the lattice method, lacing the back around card, but there's no denying that your approach is simple and effective! :)
Mr X Stitch have you got a video on that method? 😊
You bet your butt I've got one in the pipeline!
I quite like the lacing method, too. Definitely faster to pin and tape, but I figure with lacing it, that sucker is never coming loose. LOL!
Coralie AKA ferrous good point!!
