My Rhythm Game Tier List (Ranking over 30 games!)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- Oh boy, buckle up everyone. tokaku made a rhythm game tierlist!
Today we'll be ranking a ton of rhythm games from the mainstream PC games like osu!, Friday Night Funkin, Robeats to more standalone smaller games like A Dance of Fire and Ice or Rhythm Doctor. And also ranking some arcade games like Sound Voltex and my beloved taiko no tatsujin. Of course not to forget the mobile rhythm games like Arcaea, Lanota and Muse Dash as well.
A usual warning, this is my opinion, you can like things I don't like or don't like things I like! It's very subjective. If I've missed anything, it's most likely going into ??? tier because I haven't tried them or played them enough to say anything. I know more games than this list, though I haven't spent at least 5 hours playing to know them well.
Thank you spazza I stole your thumbnail format ❤️

I found your channel through FNF, and your opinion is completely valid. I may really like it, since it’s the only rhythm game I’ve played, but I understand that avid rhythm gamers have much higher standards for these types of games than I do, just like you mentioned in the video. Smart thumbnail, by the way; it definitely caught my attention.

Holy shit you are a fucking genius unlike the other fnf "rhythm gamers"
Yeah same I played rhythm games a while ago, but didn’t get back into them until recently when Friday Night Funkin’ came out and through that I found out about Tokaku’s channel. That game and Tokaku definitely got me back into rythym games so I could never dislike her or that game, despite it having some not so good input system (which I have hope for being improved because the game is nowehere near being finished yet.) Also I love the 80s game aesthetic cus it’s easier on my eyes when skimming through the menu to pick which level to play. It doesn’t have a lot to look at.

FNF really strikes me as the rhythm game for people who don't actively play rhythm games. Nothing wrong with that, but it def makes sense you'd rank it low as an avid player of rhythm games. I also respect heavily statements like "I don't really like this game, but I respect it."
I can agree a bit (unless your talking about the original) because there are hard mods like the indie Cross nightmare songs, final destination, and Space Breaker. Unless people are actually that good!?
Fnf got me really into rhythm games. Before fnf I just played geometry dash once or twice and played beat saber some times, but after fnf, I really started to like rhythm games but I still only can do 4 more games and beat saber maps without weird notes and it feels like the poster of the UA-cam video would look down on me for that. I’m not casual on the same level as others but nobody would accept me into real rhythm game groups if I tried

Those games (and vib-ribbon) are always overlooked by the rhythm game community, even though they are sime of the most accessible and unique games out there. Honestly, they're some of the best rhythm games in my opinion. They don't rely on super quick thinking and insane precision or memorization like a lot of rhythm games do. they let the music and rhythm itselftake the front seat, which makes them so much fun, and a lot easier for people to actually pick up, while still providing a challenge

Comment was made over a year ago, changed due to this edit.
It makes sense that FNF would be in E. the music is cool, but it's still new. Soon enough the expectations will change the more it gets updated and will increase, but for now? It's not good enough but it can be better. The mods are the only ones carrying it.
New Edit:
As of now with FNF, game's pretty forgettable even with the mods it has from the community. Big and successful mod releases instantly being canceled with drama, a lot of controversies within the community, even reaching Roblox? Like how does this even happen?
I'm most likely going to lower the threshold of the game to D as time goes on. I'm not up for any more conversations as at this moment, I'm pretty much uninterested with the game.
It’s comparing a free newgrounds rhythm game to games with a large team and tons of budget. They recently made a Kickstarter for the full FNF game so hopefully they can add new mechanics and keep people interested once they finish it.
@@bernkastel7438 it's not just about it being free to everyone, it's all about the mechanics, the playstyle of how the game works, especially offset, storyline if there is one. The replayability of the game is also needed, and the difficulty must be kept up to it's name. I'll gladly put the game to C if they re-chart all hard difficulties to have double inputs like it was supposed to be for every other rhythm game there is
It’s wasn’t even game intil now lol
@@MysticMocha Again, as you said, it's not that it's free, but it's an f-ing DEMO, the full game will evidently have a lot more polish in everything(Mostly considering they want to have DOUBLE the OST for the Erect Difficulty). For now, it's evidently really simple, but it will and _has_ to get better to live up to the hyoe.

it's not about the scrolling through the worlds that I had issues with actually! It's that erm, if there's going to be let's say... 40 worlds, oh god. the line is going to be so long. That's an issue I see coming in the future that they can only fix by changing it to list type scrolling, that's why I pointed it out LOL
Ahhh day made! Thanks for the reply! I totally feel this! Most of the devs focus has shifted to RD (the devs are super active in discord). There is a new update coming soon though. They also just redid the custom level select so you can sort and also search, so maybe that will come to the main 20 levels? I'll pass on your feedback to the devs. Once again thanks for being awesome!
@@tokaku The game split up the levels into multiple areas to sort of tackle this problem. There are the base 12 levels + one bonus level, then there are the extra stages (6 more challenging songs), and then 2 crown world stages (very hard compared to the rest of the game)
@@petey5009 as of recently 7 (+1 secret) more songs were added, the Muse Dash collab (2+1 secret?) and Neo Cosmos (5)
Final Hope is a hidden song ik
@@tokaku Turns out they did ! The menu is still in kind of a tree style (added levels have their own separate menus you can pretty easily reach from the start), but custom & Workshop levels are in list type scrolling, where you can either press to the beat like the rest of the game, or use the arrow keys to scroll.
ctb is actually really fun when you get into it, it's just that, it's so weird compared to everything else it's hard to start, when you stop fighting against the controls and the difficulty start coming from the pattern itself it becomes a totally different experience
taiko took me way longer for me to get into, imo dash isn't hard to learn, you just need to play the correct maps
I know that, it's just that until you get to maps that require you to dash every second the movement doesn't really start to click in my opinion
I wouldn't say it is as much of a rhythm game though
It definetly is, playing ctb without sound is almost imposible after you pass like the 2 star range, the fact that it doesn't have timing windows doesn't make it less of a rythm game

I got into it after watching the Anime and yes, the gacha based scoring system is true but thankfully the game does indeed give you free pulls every now and then. Although, I didn't get bothered by it tho. The game has insanely satisfying and banger songs that are actually songs made by Japanese Girl Bands in Japan. 🔥

14:04 I honestly couldn't agree more. I was addicted to Arcaea during the first three months of playing it, but after clearing through most of the game's content, it becomes very uninteresting (as expected). Grinding World Mode to awaken partners is far more boring than grinding to unlock new charts. I haven't actively played it in months and the only reason I log on is when an interesting World Extend chart is released. For me, the difference between the current state of the game I'm at, and the previous state is that if I wanted to play new charts, I could just grind, but now if I want that opportunity, I have to keep buying more DLC. I really wish Lowiro would update the main story more often. (It's been almost a year since Black Fate!)
Don’t get me wrong, FNF is fun and it’s actually what made me interested in rhythm games. However, I can see why she put it in E tier. The vanilla engine before the week 7 update was absolute garbage compared to other rhythm games and even after the week 7 update the latency (the amount of time it takes to register the note presses) problem still wasn’t fixed. It’s charming, flashy, and really stylish but it’s mechanically obnoxious. Congrats to you for reading all this. Here’s a cookie 🍪

for you fnf and robeats kids thinking those games in the E tier is unacceptable, chill.
there are a lot of games with big community that is not rated at all, like maimai.
those games do be bad tho, ninjamuffin was so new to mapping and coding at the time
although RoBeats was my first rhythm game, and I disagree about it being so low, I respect people's opinion.
@@senkyte robeats aint so bad, it's justa huge grind
@@potatotaxi yeah, the songs are actually quite fun. Only problem is the gears, the paywall, and the fact that it is 3d. Because of that my accuracy is shit when it comes to osu mania or other 2d 4k games.
@@potatotaxi I like robeats a ton but to get songs you need to play a lot or pay money for vip
im happy to see taiko no tatsujin at S rank because 1. The game is pretty straightforward and easy to understand. 2. The beats/dons and kas match the song and the sound effects match also. 3. The big notes give more of the rhythm and makes the game more enjoyable. And the last reason why I think Taiko no Tatsujin is a great game is because all the game modes like for the nintendo switch drum'n'fun. You can play against an AI or just play with your friends. Out of everything Tokaku has interested me into rhythm games and now I am obsessed with them. Thanks for your hard work and I hope to see you getting even better in the future! :)
It looks fun! It’s pretty straightforward to learn at first and it’s charted to the beats and instrumentals mostly. I haven’t played it myself but if I got into the game more, I would probably be having a blast with it. I’m more into Project Diva even though I got introduced to Future Tone four months ago and I recently got Mega Mix for my Switch. Honestly those two rhythm games (Taiko and Project Diva) are some of the very few iconic rhythm games to me because their gameplay is straightforward and fun to figure out. I think why I can understand why Project Diva might be placed lower in some instances is because while the controls are simple and the tutorial and songs are super fun, it’s hard to master and you need a lot of investment to practice certain things like multi notes, holds, reading patterns and fast streams of notes for example. But once you do figure it out, it becomes really fun and challenging. Much like I think for Taiko is that it’s straightforward and fun to figure out at first but it definitely looks hard to master because you have to alternate between red and blue notes, you have to have really good rhythm for certain patterns, and you have to be good at knowing how to substitute between different notes. But again, once figured out, it becomes a fun challenge. :)
I agree with her putting FNF in E tier. Way too overrated of a game. And oh god the fanbase…
the fanbase is just so trash. The game is self is pretty fun ngl but the whole community sucks. The modding community is a bit spicy tho
Ye community is trash but the game is so fun mods are EPIC
The fan base is way too filled with ped0s
As an Arcaea player with 11.97 ptt. Yes I agree it's a pain in the ass especially crosshands 😂. Gameplay wise, it's good and i played it 24/7
As soon as I saw the I hate it mechanically tier, I knew that's where Friday Night Funkin would end up.
Consider how many times the devs said they will fix a lot of problems with the input in the next update I wonder if you're gonna try it again to see how the game has improved.
I tried with a friend a few last week, the game is enjoyable but while playing i want to kill myself, getting a 'sick' score is way too precise for such a big click delay and a fast note scroll, and the music is un synchronized with the clicks, even with mods
@@gdlolmiamson3336 I never really had an issue with that while playing it, but everyone has a different experience so yeah
@@welloetelloe depends if you've played rhythm games before, also if you have a high refresh rate. Anyway most of the mods have their songs unsyncronized with the clicks.
@@gdlolmiamson3336 I played a few of them here and there, and some fnf mods
But otherwise I don't have much experience with rhythm games
Honestly, I'm criminally offended that no one mentioned pop'n music! I'm curious how you would rate it, whether a letter grade or a question mark..?
I'm SORRY i can't believe I forgot about it myself!
here's a copy pasted reply I made to another person:
To summarise my thoughts on it, I've played a total of 10 games, so I can't accurately rate it. But I personally like it better than IIDX at least first impression wise (I'm one of those weirdos that use the beat pop skin to skip the whole learning which lane is which button curve, I need to fix that eventually). Definitely a solid contender for B+ if I knew more about it. It might even be an A, but for 'A' tier games and above games, they're generally reserved for games that stay fun even while you're going through walls or at the very end. For other games under A, the walls are just a drag when I reached them (since I haven't played popn enough to hit the walls, I don't know)
@@tokaku You're good, it's just surprising it flew on by! That is fair, I haven't really played it too much myself but it's interesting! I'm glad you have at least some fun with it!!
If you want a a stranger's opinion, as a taiko player learning pop'n music is hard and painful at first but when you really learn the 9 button placement by muscle memory it's gets good. Song selection is 😙👌 although it's lacking the huge selection of vocaloid tracks taiko has
Voez and DJMax are probably the main 2 I wanted to see. Voez is very Deemo esque and DJMax is a lane game but those are honestly my favorite rhythm games.
Seeing my main game Arcaea on A tier just fills me with happiness
When you mentioned Cytus and put a little note how you would give it another shot. Yeah, you should! It's, personally speaking, my favourite rhythm game. The greatest rhythm game might he osu, but "Cytus 2" is certainly my favourite one.
It also has a storyline.
Yeah! I started to play Cytus II like one week ago and a loved it for real dude!! That Storyline catch my attention.
A list with the timestamps for all the games would be nice

I feel like that statement could apply to literally any video game ever made. Most players don’t notice the flaws in their favorite games until they sink 500 or 1000 hours into it
For me personally, Rhythm Doctor is similar to a villain who hasn't use 100% of it's power.

I love Love Live School Idol Festival (LLSIF), which is an idol rhythm game. I do completely understand where she's coming from. I play LLSIF because I was a fan of the anime. I like the aspect of collecting the girls through gacha, and I like that I get to play their songs.
Although I'm a fan, I definitely don't recommend idol games to hardcore rhythm game players.

As somebody who used to play robeats a lot, I honestly would put it in d tier. While the Roblox engine really just holds it back, I think mechanically it at least functions well. Plus it’s much easier to play against other players.
Some of the charts are complete bullshit though I’ll give you that.
gears make the game really bad for me
@@woomyzooms3781 It's easy to play against other players in terms of availability of players, but the gear system makes it unplayable for accuracy-focused players.
the thing about fnf (base game), is that it wasn't made with the intention that hardcore rhythm players would play, which would explain why all the charts are so easy
But then the mods came and destroyed that intent
I love how you put fnf in the thumbnail because you know it's the hottest rythm game right now and you know that people are gonna click it

Spin Rhythm has been improved a lot, I'm glad you wanna try it again! Basically you just don't have to hold down the click for matching notes, and it's more fluid. It has some new cool mechanics and scoring system, and great customizability.
I was thinking of buying the game, but I just wanted to ask how often the game gets updates like new music and bug fixes etc? I love the ipad ver but I've realised that there's rarely new songs so I was wondering if that was the same case with the pc ver.

there are 20 definitions to best:
for a game that you'll play for 20 years: IIDX
for a game that you'll play for community: osu (all 4)
for a game that you'll play for songs: SDVX
for a washing machine simulator: (we know this by now)
i could go on, these 4 game were the first that came to my mind.
i just prefer 4k mania... easy yet fun.
there is no best, as it depends on what metric.
parappa the rapper is great for beginner friendly fun, and is still a joy for veterans
but... there isn't much content is there.
and then there is osu, which is broken in many regards, but has hours of content, and a community
but i don't blame you for having that opinion...
