  • How did Jews at the time of Christ view Passover? What does this mean with regard to the Last Supper and the Mass? Dr. Brant Pitre looks at ancient Jewish tradition to show how an understanding of the Passover can help us to see that the Mass makes present to us the Last Supper and the Cross.

    *Great exegesis, Dr. Pitre,* 👌
*_we have to remember that the forty years of journey of Israelites in the desert , is in fact our life journey through this life, the trials faced by them , are the trials of our life in this lifetime._*
_God tested the israelites at desert and found only two persons, _*_Joshua and Caleb,_*_ worthy to enter the promised land out of six hundred thousand men who were brought out from slavery at Passover night._
*We should be constantly aware of this ratio of 2 out of 600,000, to make ourselves worthy to enter our promised land heaven.* 🙏🙏

This should be taught in our schools. Im the youngest in a family of 6 children and the only 1 not to have attended Catholic school (due to moving to the country) and i never had that oppurtunity to study and learn the facts of our religion. Please if you have the means send your children to Catholic school. Our faith is disappearing before our eyes . Although im seeing a revival of Catholicism lately we must educate our children now.

Most Protestants are reluctant to embrace the Creeds in there daily lives (my past life). It's lessons like this one that shed an abundance of light on the Nicene Creed's line-:...all things VISIBLE and INVISIBLE. I don't know about most folks, but I have to work at grasping the INVISIBLE--the spiritual. The Material reality of the first Exodus and the journey has significantly helped me to grasp the Spiritual reality of the "New" Exodus. This is so simple to grasp and it makes sense. One has to wonder why we as human beings make it so hard to understand? Anyway, great explanation Dr. Pitre.

Yes the Eucharist means in Greek thanksgiving. The Lords Supper is the fulfillment of the Lords Passover Supper Luke 22 :13-20. For Christ our Passover now has been sacrificed. As often as we participate in Passover Supper we remember what Jesus accomplished on Calvary ( 2000 years ago) There is only one perfect sacrifice and one continuous Supper celebration until Jesus returns in glory.Yes Jesus prepares the table before us with His Passover bread and wine and Jesus the great High Priest blesses the Passover bread and wine. Hebrews 7:21. Where two or more come together in Jesus name there Jesus is in the midst. Matthew 18:20. This is the promise that Jesus gives us and his presence at His table. When we eat the Passover bread and cup we will get the same results as the chosen people got: health and protection etc. The early believers who were all Jews who believed in their messiah broke bread daily from house to house Acts 2:38-41-46

The Mass is first and foremost a propitiatory sacrifice. This is clear and unmistakable in the traditional Mass. It breathes sacrifice. That is why the priest faces God (ad Deum). He is our intermediary. He stands in between God and the people and makes present the Sacrifice of Calvary. It is only secondarily and to a lesser degree a "meal." This is one of the most unfortunate and lamentable innovations after Vatican II. The New Mass was created to appeal to Protestants and align more with their notions of the Last Supper meal theme. The new prayers that replaced the traditional offeratory are common Jewish meal prayers. Equivalent to our "Bless us O Lord in these Thy gifts..." It completely erases the notion of propotiatory sacrifice in favor of a common meal. The new innovations on how we receive the Hostia completely denegrate and deny the True Presence. Now people sacrilegiously receive in the hand as common crackers. It was the English "reformers" that imposed this with the explicit intent to habituate people that the Hostia is not the True Body and Blood offered on the Cross. Is it any wonder that no one believe anymore? The Traditional Roman Rite was developed over centuries to better harness the central reality that the Mass is a Sacrifice. The greatest churches that exist were made for this reality.

CANON III.--If any one saith, that the sacrifice of the mass is only a sacrifice of praise and of thanksgiving; or, that it is a bare commemoration of the sacrifice consummated on the cross, but not a propitiatory sacrifice; or, that it profits him only who receives; and that it ought not to be offered for the living and the dead for sins, pains, satisfactions, and other necessities; let him be anathema. When Christ rose from the dead he had a real body. Remember he proved it to the apostles. Yet he could move through walls. The road to ammus. His body can now be anywhere any time he wants. He chose to have it there at the alter's. Buy the priest preforming the same sacrifice the Jesus did at the last supper. You have the body, blood soul, and divinity that the he shared with the apostles. Read John 6, and the passion narratives.

brilliance of Our Lord's divinity shines forth in an encounter with the Samaritan woman.
"“believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. .. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” the old gives way to the new. and Our Catholic Mass is celebration of this Worship, the culmination of Truth, the whiff of Paradise.
why was our Lord so adamant "on eating His flesh and drinking His Blood" ? He lost most of His followers during His ministry and yet He did not budge, why?? ..possible explanation, His Body( His DNA) has to be within you in order for our own bodily Resurrection to take place on Last Day. that explains why some saints bodies are still preserved, even after being exposed to elements awaiting the Last day.Does any other denomination have their saints bodies still preserved? I don't think so.

The Lords Supper is the fulfillment of the Lords Passover Supper. Jesus said that he fervently desired to eat the Passover with his disciples.Luke 22:13-20. When Jesus took the Passover bread Jesus said this is my body broken for you. In other words Jesus was declaring that it is all about Jesus sacrifice. When Israel ate the lamb and applied the Passover cup that it was pointing to Jesus sacrifice as Jesus is our Passover Lamb Who was sacrificed to end all sacrifices. By one sacrifice we have been sacrificed forever Hebrews 10:14. So there is only one perfect sacrifice and one continuous Supper celebration of Jesus Calvary sacrifice. When we take the Passover bread and cup we get the same results as Israel and greater because we’re under a better covenant. The early believers who were all Jews broke bread daily from house to house. [54]He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
[55]For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.

Don’t suppress the Truth Sean. Nobody believed your heresies for 15 centuries till luther invented them. We have writings from a disciple of St John, who wrote the Gospel of John and the Bread of Life discourse in John 6. St John taught Ignatius the Faith and Ignatius says the Bread is changed into Jesus’ Flesh. Literally. You know, just like Jesus did. Over and over. To unbelievers just like protestants who think that because they can’t understand the physics personally it can’t be real. Every Church Father and writer who wrote anything said it’s literally real just like Jesus kept saying. Just like Jesus’ Church, the Catholic Church has been witnessing for 20 centuries. The reason you fight it is because you know if this is true it’s all true and your pride takes a hit.
When God promised to “save” Israel He required three things of them. They must BELIEVE- they must mark their doorposts in the lambs blood AND EAT THE LAMB’S FLESH. If they did not obey ALL THREE they would not be “saved” from death. This is the same three things we must do in the New Covenant. Believe what Jesus said. Which you don’t. Have the Blood of the Covenant on your doorpost AND you must EAT the FLESH of the LAMB OF GOD. Which you don’t. Jesus said the wine was now the Blood of the New Covenant which is sacrificial language. For a Sacrifice to be proper the Apostles knew what was necessary. A priesthood and a priest. An Altar, a Lamb, a Temple snd a Liturgy. They knew full well Jesus wasn’t speaking allegories to them or the Sacrifice wasn’t valid. Unlike an American 20 centuries removed from the events who has no understanding of what he reads in his Bible that he interprets with zero authority to do so.

@@mrjeffjob better dig deeper, saying EVERY church father is just false. Just like a priest told me the other day, "priests were always required to be celibate ". Catholics like to throw "always believed" when it can be shown false. Also, I would argue that the actual change is not supported. From other things Christ has said referring to eating flesh and drinking blood, he says he's talking about spiritual things.

[26]For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.
[27]Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

      1 Corinthians 10:16
[16] The chalice of benediction, which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? And the bread, which we break, is it not the partaking of the body of the Lord?
Here Paul puts them in mind the “breaking of bread” is their partaking of the body and blood of Christ in the sacred mysteries, and becoming thereby one mystical body with Christ. This passage also confirm the Catholic teaching of the real presence of our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist.

@Charles Hendrick, do you mean if the Old Testament is just a myth? That may be partly true of parts of the OT, which is a mixture of myth and historical events, but as we get nearer to Christ, with Kings David, Solomon and finally the New Testament, it becomes truer and truer and the intensity of its truth is mind-blowing. That is, be careful not to dismiss the whole tradition, which as Catholics we are incredibly privileged to inherit from traditional Judaism

@@jerryg3524 I'm not sure how one determines the OT becomes "truer and truer" from King David forward, much less a mind blowing truth.. if the Exodus story is a myth then there was no real covenant to start the ball rolling to the NT.. There is no foundation to believe in Yahweh. And I would guess that "Jesus' believed in Moses, the Law, Noah, etc .. that would leave a huge issue of credibility when it comes to any question as to his divinity. @@charleshendrick7266 Exodus, as well as David's story in Samuel and the Book of Kings are examples of myths being mixed with history. Some early Church fathers & modern theologians, historians and especially archeologists have done and are doing amazing work in separating myth from fact; actually one can find many of their findings in UA-cam. In a number of videos with his gentle sense of humor even Dr. Pitre points out some fanciful Bible passages, for example 40 years to go from Egypt to Israel is a very long time. I think myself the Israelites could have gone to China and back in that amount of time! But as archeologists have now discovered David, although a minor ruler, did exist. The reality of Jesus the Messiah is too complex a subject to discuss here, but it is amazing that he truly did exist, was born of Mary, die a most horrible death on the cross for reasons Dr. Pitre and other theologians have brilliantly explained and after the fall of Rome his teachings did lead the whole of Western and Orthodox Eastern civilizations in a completely new direction. If that isn't mind-blowing I don't know what is, peace be with you

As for Moses story and 40 years in the wilderness. the scholars/archeologist find nothing. They can't even find Mt Sinai. This story really needs to be true.. don't you agree? As for Jesus, we have a lot of what some people wrote down, but was it accurate? If Moses could be a myth then it opens that door too. A group of scribes with an agenda? Kind of mind altering.

And i believed passover was about how the angel of death crossed over the doors of the Jews that was stained with the blood of the lamb.... that is the actual day the freedom of the Israelites began...
If I recall my version as a child when I read the story of Moses... the Egyptians had the habit of killing the first born all the time 1. Birth of Moses 2. Freeing Israelites from Egypt.3. Birth of Jesus...
It was in one place God alerted this path or habit to turn it against the Egyptians... when Moses heard that the first born of the Israelites were to be sacrificed (he had a son then) Moses gave his word that their very actions will turn against them.. the first born of every Egyptian will perish... And this is where the 7 plagues of Egypt connected from.. THE ARC IS NOT TO BE TOUCHED OR THE PLAGUES OF EGYPT FOLLOWED THOSE WHO DID SO IMMORALLY or Without holiness...
With the death 1st born of the Egyptians, the 7th plague completes and the pharaohs had no option but to let go of the Israelites...
Christ enactment of the passover is of the same the lamb that was sacrificed....
But it was for the new arc of the covenant... if you see the plagues like flood, famine, draught are mentioned when the woman will be in her birth pangs...
Ok! I'm being blocked not to link the old, new and revelations...but this should be good enough for you to take a lead from here in your research....

    Salvation is in Christ only.
    Jesus is the only way!
Jesus is the Passover. So let His blood pass over us. Let us thank Him for His sacrifice.
All of our sins, past generations, present generations and future generations were upon Christ's shoulders. His very own creations, tortured Him from sun up, until sun down, they mocked Him, spat on Him, stoned Him, beat Him with hooks and whips and chains, until His flesh was ripped out and His ribs were showing, they tore off His clothes, they ripped out His beard, they laughed at Him. They gambled on His clothes. They hammered a thorn of crowns onto His head. They had Him carry a heavy tree trunk, then used it to nail Him to, by His hands and feet. When He was thirsty from all the bleeding, beatings, and the heat of the sun, instead of water, they gave Him vinegar to drink. Even though they did all that to Him, He still prayed for them, and asked God to "forgive them, because they know not what they have done."
How much love does God have for us? Too much.
Let us honor Christ, this Passover, in rememberance of His sacrifice.
Please help me spread the good news of Jesus Christ.
Do you have questions about who Jesus is? Ok, I will tell you.
Did you know that God created the heavens and the earth, and the seas and everything in them with His Word?
Did you know that Christ is that Word in which all things were created?
Did you know that God created this earth and everything in it through Jesus (who is The Word Of God) and by Jesus Christ all things were created? Did you know that all things were created by Jesus, and for Jesus? Amen! To the glory of God.
If you are confused about who Christ Jesus is, please read this. Thank you!
Acts chapter 4 verse 12: "There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved."
    Yeshua Ha Massiach
Who is Christ? Who is Jesus?
    Born of a virgin, Mary.
Mathew Chapter 1 verse 20: " behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him (Joseph), in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that (Christ)which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus, the Christ, is God's word made flesh. Jesus is Jehovah God's (The Creator's) Word made into flesh.
1 John chapter 5 verse 7: " For there are three that bear a record in heaven, The Father, The Word, and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one."
John chapter 1 verse 1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John chapter 1 verse 14: " And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."
John chapter 1 verse 10: " He was in the world, and the world knew Him not."
Hebrews chapter 4 verse 12: " For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
How beautiful and awesome is God's Word, who is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? Magnificent in all His glory, is He.
    Amen!
John's Vision Of Christ Seated On His Throne In Heaven:
Revelation chapter 4 verse 2 to 3: " Immediately, I (John), was in the Spirit, and behold a throne sat in Heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance, and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald."
Why did Christ Jesus came and sacrificed His precious life for sinners like us?
Christ (God's Word made into flesh), came because through flesh (Adam's flesh) sin entered the world, and then because of sin death entered the whole earth. Through flesh(Jesus Christ's flesh), the earth will be saved, sin is destroyed, and the curse of death shall be broken, death and the grave shall be cast into hell.
Christ, who is God's Word made into flesh, sacrificed His life for us. He was crucified for our sins and transgressions.
Christ died, and on the third day He resurrected in the flesh, conquering death and the grave. Now, Christ is seated in Heaven, at the right hand of Power(God). Through Christ's sacrifice we gain Salvation through God's abundant mercy and grace. We are reconciled and recompensed back to God, through the shed blood of His beloved Son Christ Jesus.
John chapter 3 verse 16: " For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that who ever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life."
Romans chapter 5 verse 8: " But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
Christ came to undo the sin and eternal death brought upon the world through the sin of Adam.
Death in Adam, Life In Christ:
Romans chapter 5 verse 19: " For as by one man's disobedience, many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience, many will be made righteous."
Romans chapter 5 verse 18: " Therefore, as through one man's (Adam's) offense judgement came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even through one Man's (Christ's) righteous act, the free gift came to all men, resulting in the justification of life."
Romans chapter 5 verse 17: " For if by the one man's offense(Adam's offense), death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in the life through the One(Jesus Christ).
Romans chapter 5 verse 12: " Therefore, just as through one man (Adam)sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned."
Romans chapter 5 verse 21: " "So that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Do you now see that through Adam, sin and death entered the world, so that is why Christ Jesus came to give life, and give it abundantly? Yes Christ came to give eternal life through Salvation.
Adam's flesh brought sin, death, destruction, and condemnation.
Christ's sacrifice, the crucifixtion of His flesh, brings reconciliation of sins, life, resurrection, eternal life, salvation
Christ is coming back again, not as a sacrificial lamb. He is coming back as a roaring, waring lion, to destroy sin, death, and the grave once and for all. Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen! Hallelujah!
Revelation chapter 22 verse 12 to 13: " And behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. "
Now do you see friends, Why Christ Jesus is so so Important for our Salvation? Yes.
Now, do you understand why there is only one way to God, and that is only through Christ Jesus, only? Yes.
Christ is Salvation. Christ is our Lord and Saviour. Christ is the only way to God. Christ is the only Mediator between God and men(us humans).
God loves us so much, He does not want anyone to perish in hell. God wants all sinners to be saved. That is why He sent His Word to save the world. God's Word became flesh, and dwelt among us to save us.
Will you accept Christ and be saved?
Romans chapter 6 verse 23: " For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
John Chapter 3 verse 16: " For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that who ever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life."
    Salvation is free!
    Salvation is free!
Christ already paid the price, all you have to do is recieve salvation through acceptance of Jesus Christ, Yeshua Ha Massiach.
    So who is Christ?
He is The Word Of God. He is the Son of God. He is God. He is the image of the unseen God. He is the Alpha and Omega. He is the beginning and the end. He is the Great I Am. He is Emmanuel. He is The Christ. He is The Messiah. He is The Creator. He is our Lord and Saviour. He is our Mediator. He is the Lion and the Lamb. He is Salvation. He is the way, the truth, and life.
    Amen!
    I love you Lord!
John chapter 14 verse 6: " Jesus said to him," I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
    Colassians chapter 1 verse 15 to 16:
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him."
    John chapter 1 verse 1 to 4:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men."
I hope that you know Christ, and understand Christ better now,to the glory of God.
    Amen!
Christ is for all who will receive Him.
    Repent of your sins.
    Submit to Jehovah-God.
Love God with all your heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit.
    Love one another.
    Forgive one another.
It is written, that if you "resist the devil, and submit to God, then devil will flee from you."
Hate sin with all your heart, mind, body, soul, and spirit.
Share the true gospel of Christ with others.

The Passover is the literal "Passing over" of the house with the blood on the door post and the lintel...
    Exodus 12 : 7-13
7 “Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. 8 They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted, its head with its legs and its inner parts. 10 And you shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. 11 In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover. 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. 13 The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

As a protestant, I agree until the part at the end. His propitiation has continued to passover the judgement of sin wether there was a mass or not. The lord's super isn't to remember our sins, but to give thanks and remember he defeated sin, and look forward to his return. Catholicism turned the lord's super into a continuation of the sacrificial system that Christ finished.
The passover was giving thanks for their freedom in slavery, the lord's super gives thanks to the freedom from the condemnation of sin and the sacrificial system of the law that didn't save anyone.
Most Protestants today hold to the spiritual presence of Christ in the Lord’s Supper. The elements do not change or become the body and blood of the Lord in any way. The elements are symbols of His body and blood. While Jesus did say, “This is my body” and “This is my blood,” it was in the context of a Passover meal in which every element had a symbolic meaning. It would have been entirely out of context for the disciples to suddenly interpret these two items literally-especially since Jesus had not yet been crucified.
When we partake of the elements of communion today, we recognize that they are more than just symbols of something that happened a long time ago. Whenever we gather together to observe the Lord’s Supper, Christ is present with us spiritually. It is not just the memory of Him that is present; He is in the midst of the congregation. The emphasis is upon His presence within the worshiping body, not within the elements of the table. The believer communes with the Lord through the act of remembrance and worship.

Can't recommend this book enough to compare any of our contemporary (i.e., post 16th century) ideas of the Eucharist with what the early Church's position was... and what "kind" of presence was relevant/worth debating for them. We would do well to wrestle with what we think is relevant in light of what those more proximate to Christ (some of whom knew men who knew the apostles) concluded (in light of the same scriptures [i.e., same body of data to determine what is being relayed by the authors of scripture] we have available to us):

@Anthony Louis The early church in context, believed it to be symbolic and spiritual. Just like protestants 🤔
In discussing the Lord’s Table from the perspective of church history, at least two important questions arise. First, did the early church believe that the elements (the bread and the cup) were actually and literally transformed into the physical body and blood of Christ? In other words, did they articulate the doctrine of transubstantiation as modern Roman Catholics do? Second, did early Christians view the eucharist as a propitiatory sacrifice? Or put another way, did they view it in the terms articulated by the sixteenth-century Council of Trent?
In today’s post, we will address the first of those two questions.
Did the Early Church Fathers Hold to Transubstantiation?
Transubstantiation is the Roman Catholic teaching that in the eucharist, the bread and the cup are transformed into the literal body and blood of Christ. Here are several quotes from the church fathers, often cited by Roman Catholics, in defense of their claim that the early church embraced transubstantiation.
Ignatius of Antioch (d. c. 110): “Take note of those who hold heterodox opinions on the grace of Jesus Christ which has come to us, and see how contrary their opinions are to the mind of God. . . . They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer because they do not confess that the Eucharist is the flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ, flesh which suffered for our sins and which that Father, in his goodness, raised up again. They who deny the gift of God are perishing in their disputes” (Letter to the Smyrnaeans 6:2-7:1).
Irenaeus (d. 202): "He took from among creation that which is bread, and gave thanks, saying, ‘This is my body.’ The cup likewise, which is from among the creation to which we belong, he confessed to be his blood” (Against Heresies, 4:17:5).
Irenaeus again: “He has declared the cup, a part of creation, to be his own blood, from which he causes our blood to flow; and the bread, a part of creation, he has established as his own body, from which he gives increase unto our bodies. When, therefore, the mixed cup [wine and water] and the baked bread receives the Word of God and becomes the Eucharist, the body of Christ, and from these the substance of our flesh is increased and supported, how can they say that the flesh is not capable of receiving the gift of God, which is eternal life-flesh which is nourished by the body and blood of the Lord, and is in fact a member of him?” (Against Heresies, 5:2).
Tertullian (160-225): “[T]he flesh feeds on the body and blood of Christ, that the soul likewise may be filled with God” (The Resurrection of the Dead).
Origen (182-254): “Formerly, in an obscure way, there was manna for food; now, however, in full view, there is the true food, the flesh of the Word of God, as he himself says: ‘My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink’” (Homilies on Numbers, 7:2).
Augustine (354-430): “I promised you [new Christians], who have now been baptized, a sermon in which I would explain the sacrament of the Lord’s Table. . . . That bread which you see on the altar, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the body of Christ. That chalice, or rather, what is in that chalice, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the blood of Christ” (Sermons227).
How should we think about such statements?
Obviously, there is no disputing the fact that the patristic authors made statements like, “The bread is the body of Christ” and “The cup is the blood of Christ.” But there is a question of exactly what they meant when they used that language. After all, the Lord Himself said, “This is My body” and “This is My blood.” So it is not surprising that the early fathers echoed those very words.
But what did they mean when they used the language of Christ to describe the Lord’s Table? Did they intend the elements to be viewed as Christ’s literal flesh and blood? Or did they see the elements as symbols and figures of those physical realities?
In answering such questions, at least two things ought to be kept in mind:
      1. WE OUGHT TO INTERPRET THE CHURCH FATHERS' STATEMENTS WITHIN THEIR HISTORICAL CONTEXT.
Such is especially true with regard to the quotes cited above from Ignatius and Irenaeus. During their ministries, both men found themselves contending against the theological error of docetism (a component of Gnostic teaching), which taught that all matter was evil. Consequently, docetism denied that Jesus possessed a real physical body. It was against this false teaching that the apostle John declared, "For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist" (2 John 7).
In order to combat the false notions of docetism, Ignatius and Irenaeus echoed the language Christ used at the Last Supper (paraphrasing His words, “This is My body” and "This is My blood"). Such provided a highly effective argument against docetic heresies, since our Lord's words underscore the fact that He possessed a real, physical body.
A generation after Irenaeus, Tertullian (160-225) used the same arguments against the Gnostic heretic Marcion. However, Tertullian provided more information into how the eucharistic elements ought to be understood. Tertullian wrote:
“Having taken the bread and given it to His disciples, Jesus made it His own body, by saying, ‘This is My body,’ that is, the symbol of My body. There could not have been a symbol, however, unless there was first a true body. An empty thing or phantom is incapable of a symbol. He likewise, when mentioning the cup and making the new covenant to be sealed ‘in His blood,’ affirms the reality of His body. For no blood can belong to a body that is not a body of flesh” (Against Marcion, 4.40).
Tertullian's explanation could not be clearer. On the one hand, he based his argument against Gnostic docetism on the words of Christ, “This is My body.” On the other hand, Tertullian recognized that the elements themselves ought to be understood as symbols which represent the reality of Christ's physical body. Because of the reality they represented, they provided a compelling refutation of docetic error.
Based on Tertullian's explanation, we have good reason to view the words of Ignatius and Irenaeus in that same light.

      2. WE OUGHT TO ALLOW THE CHURCH FATHERS TO CLARIFY THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE LORD'S TABLE.
We have already seen how Tertullian clarified his understanding of the Lord’s Table by noting that the bread and the cup were symbols of Christ’s body and blood. In that same vein, we find that many of the church fathers similarly clarified their understanding of the eucharist by describing it in symbolic and spiritual terms.
At times, they echoed the language of Christ (e.g. "This is My body" and "This is My blood") when describing the Lord's Table. Yet, in other places, it becomes clear that they intended this language to be ultimately understood in spiritual and symbolic terms. Here are a number of examples that demonstrate this point:
The Didache, written in the late-first or early-second century, referred to the elements of the Lord’s table as “spiritual food and drink” (The Didache, 9). The long passage detailing the Lord's Table in this early Christian document gives no hint of transubstantiation whatsoever.
Justin Martyr (110-165) spoke of “the bread which our Christ gave us to offer in remembranceof the Body which He assumed for the sake of those who believe in Him, for whom He also suffered, and also to the cup which He taught us to offer in the Eucharist, in commemoration of His blood"(Dialogue with Trypho, 70).
Clement of Alexandria explained that, “The Scripture, accordingly, has named wine the symbol of the sacred blood” (The Instructor, 2.2).
Origen similarly noted, “We have a symbol of gratitude to God in the bread which we call the Eucharist” (Against Celsus, 8.57).
Cyprian (200-258), who sometimes described the eucharist using very literal language, spoke against any who might use mere water for their celebration of the Lord’s Table. In condemning such practices, he explained that the cup of the Lord is a representation of the blood of Christ: “I marvel much whence this practice has arisen, that in some places, contrary to Evangelical and Apostolic discipline, water is offered in the Cup of the Lord, which alone cannot represent the Blood of Christ” (Epistle 63.7).
Eusebius of Caesarea (263-340) espoused a symbolic view in his Proof of the Gospel:
For with the wine which was indeed the symbol of His blood, He cleanses them that are baptized into His death, and believe on His blood, of their old sins, washing them away and purifying their old garments and vesture, so that they, ransomed by the precious blood of the divine spiritual grapes, and with the wine from this vine, "put off the old man with his deeds, and put on the new man which is renewed into knowledge in the image of Him that created him." . . . He gave to His disciples, when He said, "Take, drink; this is my blood that is shed for you for the remission of sins: this do in remembrance of me." And, "His teeth are white as milk," show the brightness and purity of the sacramental food. For again, He gave Himself the symbols of His divine dispensation to His disciples, when He bade them make the likeness of His own Body. For since He no more was to take pleasure in bloody sacrifices, or those ordained by Moses in the slaughter of animals of various kinds, and was to give them bread to use as the symbol of His Body, He taught the purity and brightness of such food by saying, “And his teeth are white as milk” (Demonstratia Evangelica, 8.1.76-80).
Athanasius (296-373) similarly contended that the elements of the Eucharist are to be understood spiritually, not physically: “[W]hat He says is not fleshly but spiritual. For how many would the body suffice for eating, that it should become the food for the whole world? But for this reason He made mention of the ascension of the Son of Man into heaven, in order that He might draw them away from the bodily notion, and that from henceforth they might learn that the aforesaid flesh was heavenly eating from above and spiritual food given by Him.” (Festal Letter, 4.19)
Augustine (354-430), also, clarified that the Lord’s Table was to be understood in spiritual terms: “Understand spiritually what I said; you are not to eat this body which you see; nor to drink that blood which they who will crucify me shall pour forth. . . . Although it is needful that this be visibly celebrated, yet it must be spiritually understood” (Exposition of the Psalms, 99.8).
He also explained the eucharistic elements as symbols. Speaking of Christ, Augustine noted: “He committed and delivered to His disciples the figure [or symbol] of His Body and Blood.” (Exposition of the Psalms, 3.1).
And in another place, quoting the Lord Jesus, Augustine further explained: “‘Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,’ says Christ, ‘and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.’ This seems to enjoin a crime or a vice; it is therefore a figure [or symbol], enjoining that we should have a share in the sufferings of our Lord, and that we should retain a sweet and profitable memory of the fact that His flesh was wounded and crucified for us (On Christian Doctrine, 3.16.24).
A number of similar quotations from the church fathers could be given to make the point that-at least for many of the fathers-the elements of the eucharist were ultimately understood in symbolic or spiritualterms. In other words, they did not hold to the Roman Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation.
To be sure, they often reiterated the language of Christ when He said, “This is My body” and “This is My blood.” They especially used such language in defending the reality of His incarnation against Gnostic, docetic heretics who denied the reality of Christ's physical body.
At the same time, however, they clarified their understanding of the Lord’s Table by further explaining that they ultimately recognized the elements of the Lord's Table to be symbols-figures which represented and commemorated the physical reality of our Lord’s body and blood.
