I just recently got hooked on Chess (around August 2021), as an adult. My first book is Dan Heisman's "Back to Basics: Tactics" .. I completed around 75% of the book, and still going through it. It's really good and clear.. in few months, my rating in lichess increased by 200+, and my colleagues at work (one of them used to beat me consistently) stand no chance against me. I feel I have weakness when it comes to positional and strategic play, so my next books will probably be Logical Chess and Simple Chess. Not sure if I need the other book at this stage (How to beat your dad at chess). Thank you for the inspiring channel for adult chess lovers.
For those rated between 1300 and 1800, here is my list of chess books: FCO: Fundamental Chess Openings (Paul Van der Sterren) Modern Chess Openings, 15th Edition (Nick de Firmian) 1001 Chess Exercises for Beginners: The Tactics Workbook that Explains the Basic Concepts, Too (Franco Masetti) 1001 Chess Exercises for Club Players: The Tactics Workbook that Also Explains All Key Concepts (Frank Erwich) 1001 Deadly Checkmates (John Nunn); Neverending Tactics: 3003 Positions to Perfection (Lyudmil Tsvetkov) Understanding Chess Move by Move (John Nunn) Chess Strategy for Club Players (Herman Grooten) Cpmplete Manual of Positional Chess V1 & V2 (Konstantin Sakaev & Konstantin Landa) Silman's Complete Endgame Course: From Beginner to Master (Jeremy Silman) This list is only a starting point for those wishing to become stronger chess players. Note that you will need to do tactics most every day. Calculation skills are perishable.
Hello, thanks for replying and answering my question. I had recently purchased Simple Chess and, after this video, just ordered the other two. From all the reviews and your recommendation, I am really looking forward to digging into these books.
Great video. I have all 3 books and I'm looking forward to reading them. I read the reviews for Logical Chess Move By Move and there were other recommended books that were similar in case you would like to read them. The 2 books that were recommended in the reviews were The Game of Chess by Siegbert Tarrasch and Chess: The Art of Logical Thinking: From the First Move to the Last by Neil McDonald.
I actually read "how to beat your dad at chess" quite a while ago before I even knew of the existence of Magnus Carlsen let alone Hikaru Nakamura and ended up having a good laugh when I tried train Magnus as basically that book is nearly the whole 1200 elo part of train Magnus 😂😂😂
I am currently working with Silman "How to reassess your chess". It's all about imbalances and it gives you plenty to think about, particularly in the middle game.
If you haven't read Simple Chess, you should read it. Then maybe some good game collection, like Reti's "Masters of the chessboard" or Chernev's "Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played". Israel Gelfer's "Positional Chess Handbook" is also a great book to learn positional chess, I like his approach more than Silman's.

Simple chess is an amazing book, good for everyone. Great video
Thanks, totally agree with you
Yes, good even for old-school players like myself, because the original edition is in traditional notation and it can still be found.
Thanks for the book reviews. The first 2 look great. Haven't heard of the 3rd one before.

Would you recommend these books for below 900 elo players?
