Very great video as always, but as a quick aside, the reason that Aaron Nola had a higher bWAR than deGrom in 2018 was because of the Phillies’s defense. bWAR takes into account a team’s defense when calculating a pitcher’s value. The 2018 Phillies were one of the worst defenses in MLB history as measured by DRS. Now the Mets also had a poor defense that season, but Philadelphia’s was war crime levels of terrible. bWAR credits a pitcher for having a bad defense, while also counting against said pitcher if they have a good defense. I’m not arguing that I completely agree with that approach, but that’s the main reason (combined with Citi Field being a pitcher’s haven that year compared to Citizens Bank Park being hitter-friendly).

    • @armadillolover99

rWAR is just terrible in general, fWAR (and fangraphs in general) is superior in nearly every way.

For my first come-to-baseballl-Jesus moment about how meaningless win-loss records are for pitchers, go check out Nolan Ryan, 1987. He led the league in ERA (plus ERA+, but we didn't know about that stat at the time), plus he had his best year in terms of strikeouts and strikeout-walk ratio... yet went 8-16. Sure, it's a stat that made sense in the days when pitchers tended to go the distance, and only got pulled in the event of injury or outright ineffectiveness.

One of my favorite pitchers of all-time. In his prime the dude was an absolute machine who dominated hitters in unprecedented ways. But I'm in hindsight it's not surprising his body gave out on him. The power and ferociousness he was pitching with combined with his slender frame meant that he was never going to enjoy longevity in his career. It was a trade off. What he was doing wasn't sustainable at his build. He is 6'4 and 180 lbs. His body was geared towards quick snappy movements. He has the frame and bone structure of BIG elite athletes. But he never had the muscle to match.
I'm no expert, but my belief is that he was simply putting way too much stress on his connective tissues (which he did for years) and finally they simple gave out on him. Connective tissue injuries are some of the worst especially for athletes. They can be way harder or even impossible to repair compared to muscle injuries or even bone injuries. Ligaments, tendons, cartilage. Once you start over stressing those they can easily become inflamed. If you don't rest it and treat it or ignore it because you're still functioning highly it can lead to CRONIC inflammation. And that can lead to all sorts of problems. Certain athletes even totally wear out their cartilage. Lonzo Ball is a perfect example. He supposedly wore out his cartilage in his knee so bad there was almost none left and it was practically bone rubbing on bone. He's been injured for years and his blossoming career is most likely done. He'll be lucky to be an average player in the league IF he ever returns.
I think a similar thing happened to DeGrom. Whatever the details of his injuries are, I think they have caused permanent damage and he will never even get close to being the same pitcher he once was. It's a shame because I think he could have won 3 maybe even 4 or 5 Cy Youngs if he stayed relatively healthy until his late 30s or even until 40 like some pitchers. But his body just wasn't durable enough to sustain the pressure he was putting on it any longer. It's unfortunate. But he was still fantastic for about 8 years which is nothing to sneeze at. And for about 3 of those he was the undisputed best pitcher in the game.
