    Derek Jeter holds the Yankee team record for stolen bases. It took him about 18 seasons to surpass the orevious record set by Rickey Henderson. Rickey was only a Yankee for about 3 1/2 years.

    Leading off for the Oakland Athletics is Rickey Henderson.
    As an old A's fan, Henderson is my favorite Oakland A.
    Rickey could get on base because he could hit and he walked a lot, which
    attests to his hitting ability and good judgement at the plate....but also
    it is a reflection of his posture at the plate. It was very Pete Rose style
    of an exaggerated hunch over stance at the plate. So he got on base a lot.
    Rickey was an event when he was on base.
    The electricity was in the air because everybody knew he was a threat to steal 2nd.
    And then 3rd. It was so fun to see the pressure and intensity Rickey brought to the game.

      Reggie Jackson is often falsely cited as the first guy to play with flair. As is, uh, Willie Mays. As was King Kelly. It's all absurd. It felt like he was bringing a show type performance to the game. He was having fun and genuinely loved the game. We loved him in NY. Many still do. Ricky Henderson is no doubt the GOAT lead off batter. He could have easily thrived in the 3 hole or clean up. With that said, having a lead off batter who is as dangerous as a clean up batter is a huge asset for a team and a nightmare for opposing pitchers. From the moment the game starts the first guy they face is a threat. In fact, Ricky was so dangerous it was not safe walking him because you were most likely putting a guaranteed scoring run on base. What an amazing ball player he was. It's fun to watch athletes who are so good they project a high level of confidence. Larry Bird talked a lot of trash and was keenly aware of his superior talent which gave him a license to talk said trash. Everyone knows how flamboyant Mohammed Ali was. Ricky Henderson was indeed a "hotdog" and there will never be another perfectly built lead off man like him.

    Ricky and Larry Bird are cut from the same cloth. They're intentionally roasting people from the time they get to the statium till when they leave. They are always 'on.' It's a deliberate act they perfected before they went pro. They arrived fully realized. Ricky knew he was hilarious and was a character. And, it was a character. People didn't know what to make of it at first. But this approach wasn't unlike an actor who goes Method and stays in character the entire time. That's all Ricky was doing, taking the method acting approach, but applying it to baseball. Because he never broke character and inhabited the Ricky persona so completely 24/7 fully committing to the bit, that everybody bought into it and had the intended effect as it rubbed a few opponents the wrong way. Which played right into Ricky's hands. The fact some speculaters still pushback on the narrative that this larger than life persona was, in fact, a manufactured persona and just a role Ricky was playing is a testiment to what a mental master over mere mortal men Ricky truely was. The clues, trace evidence and irrefutable facts bare this all out to be true. The truth, whole truth and nothing but the Ricky truth. The biggest mic drop argument ender to the whole Is Ricky just playing the part of Ricky and Ricky is a made-up figment of his imagination whose alter-ego is now our historical collective shared Tyler-Durdan make-believe evil twin born out of necessity like The Hulk to Bruce Banner or Thor to Dr. Donald Blake; this super-sized leveled-up mirror image doppelganger versions of themselves conjured up who possess the thick skinned, unflappable outsized-confidence and mental toughness of projected invincibility bravado to conquer the competition that otherwise mild mannered, insecure, riddled with doubts and very human, relatable secret identity everyday everyman, Ricky Henderson, had to overcome and manifested out of that reality. The whole running joke that everybody and his mother knows about Ricky Henderson be how Ricky Henderson talks about himself which be Ricky Henderson always refers to himself in the third person. HE didn't do this or HE didn't do that. RICKY did this or RICKY didn't do that. RICKY was the larger than life superstar character he created that HE just merely played the part of that was totally separate from his real life Clark Kent understudy after-hours, off the clock, behind the curtains other self that only very few people got to see let alone know about who were privy to that were in his private little inner circle, which might've just been Ricky, and that goes double for Ricky too. It all factors in and is another part of the complex machinations that went into building the ultimate one-man wrecking crew, scoring machine that is the prince of thieves king himself, the split personality to make up the singular talent unlike any other: Ricky MF Henderson.
    Gotta go; Ricky gotta run.

    add Jose Reyes 60, 66, and 78 stolen bases to the list. HUGE Mets fan here, I saw the Mets entire roster increase their stolen base number the only 3 years Rickey ever coached, he was the first base coach and many times looked like he would run himself. What made Rickey dangerous wasn’t only his speed and contact but he’s smart. This can be seen on Jose Reyes and the 2006 Mets speed stats. About 3 months later the accountant contacted the general manager that the check hadn't been deposited. Seems that Rickey was so proud of the check he pinned to a bulletin board in his house so he could look at it. The general manager told Rickey he wouldn't get the $1 million until he put it in the bank. He sent some guy from his office to Rickey's house. They stopped at a Kinko's to make a copy of the check for Rickey's bulletin board then they went to the bank to deposit it.

      Another weird stupid gatekeeping take. Since 2000, the 70 stolen bases mark has been broken four times. Out of these four times, only one of them is still an active player, Acuna Jr. Out of all the active players that lead in total stolen bases, the highest is Starling Marte (36 years old) at 354 stolen bases. If we are going to even consider your statistically impossible scenario of someone beating Henderson's total, the most likely at the moment would be Acuna Jr (26 years old) if he can stay healthy looking purely at age factor and he is at 196 stolen bases. Henderson averaged 56 stolen bases a year. Acuna Jr is at 28 stolen bases per year. Even if Acuna Jr keeps his pace of 28 a year, if he plays a 25 year career like Henderson, he will reach only HALF of the stolen base total at 700. If Acuna Jr wanted to at least match the record, starting next season for the next 18
      seasons he would need to average 67 stolen bases a season.
      All this to say get your head out of your ass, no one is touching that record.

      @michaellee4276 That is all correct. Teams abandoned the stolen base because in an advanced metric baseball world, it wasn't a play worthy of performing. So the rules were changed to encourage teams to steal more.

    Rickey's showboating isn't anything compared to todays guys. It's out of control anymore and even Ohtani is starting do it. I understand a walk off home run but guys pimp a solo shot when down by 3. They'd have one in their ear next at bat in in Rickey's era.

    He was awesome!
    I hated him, but I am a Jay's/Expo's fan so ya I hated him. Only because the dude was scary for my teams to go up against. Loved when he came to the Jay's though!

    What gets me about pro athletes is they sign a contract to play for x amount of years for x amount of dollars and then want more money for before the contract is over .. why ?! You agreed to play your best for the term of the contract

    • @1977TA
      @1977TA 3 дні тому

      The contract they sign is based on what their perceived value is at the time they are given the contract. As the season plays out and they become more valuable, the previous amount of money that was agreed to no longer suffices because other teams would gladly pay more to get them. Player salaries are driven by their market value. If it goes down they get a pay cut. If it goes up they command a pay raise. They don't wait until their previous deal expires because anything can happen between now and then. They want to get a new deal while the market for them is hot. Pro sports are games and they are also a business.

    A little grammar please: "They had never seen ANYONE" Read much?

    • @LarryDanaDavid
      @LarryDanaDavid День тому +1

      They had never seen anyone" is grammatically correct; it uses the past perfect tense ("had seen") to indicate an action that happened before another past action, and "anyone" functions as the object of the verb "seen" in this sentence.

    Ricky Henderson was a screw up on The Yankees here in NY in the late 80s. I still hold a grudge...The end..

      I like screwups who average like 9 WAR and dominate the way no Yankee had since Mickey Mantle, another guy long regarded as a screwup by idiot Yankee fans. Other folks begrudge them. Go figure.
      P.S. I'm a Yankees fan.
