I don't mind swears it but it's clearly overused in Yennefer's dialogue. Only "shitgaard" made mi smile as it's not so easy to make that word in my native polish.
"Fire through the heart is the only thing that will kill a Leshy." The right next episode it's ripped in half and instantly killed by a random monster. If you're going to create your own fantasy rules, at least follow them.
A witcher couldn't rip a leshy in half like that thing did. The fire through the heart is the witcher's way to kill, not that it was the only way in nature to kill it. You know, the survival of the fittest thing. That creature was larger and stronger... only natural. LOL Ripping anything in half will kill it.
In complete fairness, it's a totally never-before-seen monster that the witchers have no clue what to categorize it as, so that possibly means one or two things: 1. it has some strange mutant bullshit within it allowing it to kill leshies in a way the witchers don't know, 2. expanding on that idea, witchers don't know everything about monsters and monster-slaying, even though they posture like they do. It's a bit convenient, but it's not, like, totally bullshit convenient imo. The World is routinely seen to be a setting with a lot of mysteries, even moreso when accounting for the mysteries that people lie about having the answers to.
@@celticbabs3105 If there was several ways to kill, I don't think Vesemir would so firmly state that fire through the heart is *the only thing* Besides, it's a monster made of wood and trees. We heard Eskel fought it for 6 hours and see it getting chopped by Geralt but that didn't even faze it. I think it can survive being attacked by another creature.
@@manuj2868 Yeah, it seems they've basically decided the movie is almost it's own thing at this point and only use references to it whenever they feel like it. So much for canon.
There were 3 things that bothered me in this scene: 1. Falka looks like flame atronach from Skyrim 2. Her story is very popular and they are all wizards who were surely studying about her at some point. 3. They looked impressed like it was the first time they saw a magic trick, even one of them makes a ":O" face, but again... THEY ARE ALL WIZARDS
@greenismycolor really stupid thing is it's on Netflix which is purely subscriber driven model, continuity literally costs them nothing as their general audience has already paid
@Cody Ingram It's more than that at this point. That incentive structure has been in place so long that there is basically no-one in Hollywood who actually understands the value of consistency, or is even capable enough to recognize competent writing, even at the senior levels. The cycle has been going for so long that even the people at the top, the people in charge understand this. It began several cycles ago, when most people in the industry were still at least somewhat competent in this regard, and the dimwits made money and got promoted, gradually recruiting more like themselves untill everyone else got pushed out. Now we are in a situation where most senior executives have no understanding of the importance of consistency, and thus everyone they hire reflect this.
And what good would chucking a body into a viper pit do? Other than kill all the vipers from sitting in body sludge till they rot? So I would not be massively surprised if Netflix would write that in🤣🤣🤣
I'm not exaggerating when I say I've been highly anticipating your season 2 critiques - your videos are always so well edited and thought out! edit: it's weird that the show doesn't even stay true to the events in the anime, to their own lore when it's considered canon by the same producer - what's happening in the writers' room? And it's one thing to deviate from the books, but another to replace it with stories riddled with plot holes and questionable dialogue. yepp, i`m coming here for the exact same reason. sometimes i start doubting myself... am i over-critical? could it really be that they would get it so wrong when there are countless ppl working on it and a huge budget is being spend, or is it just me? have i developed a distorted worldview, so that i can`t follow logic any more? am i remembering things wrong (the anime)? and than i come here and i get reassurance that i have my marbles all together still and it`s actually the showrunners who have thrown logic and consistancy out of the window. "Yennefer is a Nilfgaard spy!" are we talking about the same Yennefer that killed a sizable chunk of the Nilfgaard forces two episodes ago? and so on...🤦♀

Probably not the first time people have heard this take but this show is absolutely carried by people who has never seen any other Witcher content except maybe played the Witcher 3 I think Netflix is taking advantage of having a massive causal audience and pretty much changing the story wherever they see fit even in small or weird or just flat out dumb ways ( turning eskel into a leshen unnecessarily)
If the story were good, and well handled, there wiil be no problem with taking deviations from the books. But as you say, most of the time there's little logic. About Eskel... I think the show is taking a "GoT shot" (oh, no one is safe!). Problem being... Eskel get 1 epispde for the casual audience so... who cares about him?
And I believe season 2 is pretty good considering the larger target audience ; I’m watching with my father (we just watched season 1) and he finds pretty good (it gets noticeably better in the second half). And he’s a (filthy) casual. So in that sense, the Netflix team did a good job I believe
@@aurelienthibault9142 yeah I mean I saw some articles about the Witcher’s viewing numbers and it would appear to be absolutely massive so they are achieving the goal of making a popular show it’s just a shame that in my opinion they’re using that to take a lot of unnecessary libraries

Why they had to turn Yennefer from this absolute boss femme fatale character into an edgy unlikable almost parody still baffles me... i guess they may have thought replacing all the eloquence and confidence with lots of cursing and mind of a fucking emo teen would make her into this cool anti-heroine but it failed on every possible level (also what they did to Fringillas character, especially later the season is just awful, and I will not forgive them for what they did to Vesemir)
I was actually able to accept and like how they portrayed Yennefer in Season 1. Despite the changes, they gave her a backstory which is fine since it was absent in the books. Season 2 changed her, not only is she acting contrary to the books, she doesn't appear to relate to the version Season 1 offered us. To quote Yennefer in Season 2, multiple times, "... F'ck"

I find it wierd how Tissaia is always saying that there is nothing worse than crying sorceress and here she is crying almost in every scene she’s in. I’m not sure if she cried even after Tanned in the books.
Can this show do *anything* right? Continuity? Consistent characterization? Competent story-telling on any level? How about just any sense of love for the source material? Nah, no, nuh-huh and hell nope! Seriously though, who is their intended audience? Game fans aren’t happy, book fans are insulted, and people who just wanted a good show are going to be confused and apathetic from how convoluted and messy the story-telling is. This is almost Game of Thrones Season 8 but without the first several seasons of greatness to make the drop in quality all the more infuriating.

@@zydrate5098 i have recently visited Netflix official channel on YT, and was shocked by the amount of positive reviews under the trailer to the second season. Most english comments supported this show, despite the fact, that in many places it was inconsistent, butchered its source material and overall had some serious plot holes. I am not against new remakes and interpretations of the already established stories, if they are done in a smart and interesting way. Unfortunately, it is not not the case for the Netflix writers…although here (in Russia) most people on the contrary to the English viewers hated Netflix Witcher really bad, specially for miscasting of the characters and political agenda, which completely killed slavic atmosphere and authenticity, and made this show look like a generic medieval fantasy fan fiction)
Regarding the mages not attacking Yennefer as she escapes, I remember a comment about magic not being allowed/disabled in that reunion. No ideia why the kings had no guards run after them though.
Magic was banned at the gathering, by the mages and sorceresses themselves. Since Yennefer is betraying the conclave, they would've definitely lifted the ban and pursued her.
They should have added a comment about running around being disabled for that reunion too. It would have been quite stupid but at least you could explain why none could use their legs to even try running after them. Cahir was in terrible shape and I hope they are not trying to convince us that Yen is now Mrs Bolt.....
I'd like to confirm my opinion about the writing. It's not that the story doesn't follow the books, in many cases it is radically different, it is the fact that the story they replaced it with is inferior, juvenile, disjointed, and full of over the top action scenes that does nothing for the story and is only there to keep those with ADHD interested. Character development is minimal and I find it hard to feel for any of the main characters. Oh, and I do like this version of Anna Shaffer as Triss. She's cute, I like the hair, I like her voice... There I said it. hahaha
It still wouldn't be much a an adaptation if they kept so far from the books, but indeed, if at least it was as good or better, at least would could enjoy that story inspired by the books
Something as simple as showrunners making the mistake of "you will answer to this", instead of "you will answer for this"can really show how much people care about a show
I could see it making sense if there was an object involved. Like, if she was holding some kind of symbol or instrument of judgement? But, I'm guessing that was not the case. Funny (or outrageous?) how in the episode witchers are just taunting Ciri to break all her bones on the training devices. Yeah, great trainers, outstanding methodology. Quite unlike the books in which each device had its theory, explanation on what was its purpose, what are the necessary steps for Ciri to succeed etc...
I would have far rather had more time on Ciri training and her relationship with the witchers than that long and drawn out fabricated storyline they created for Yennefer (simply because Lauren decided Yen's book story was boring). I get that not everything should be recreated wholesale from book or game, I can allow for creative change....but this was butchery of lore, world, and characters that so many of us have spend money and time with over years.
The weirdest thing for me is that in Kaer Morhen should be only Coen, Geralt, Eskel, Lambert and Vesemir. But they put there like 13 witchers but shows only these 5 and never use any other name than these 5.
The Ciri actress fits the role pretty well. But I went into a bookstore some time ago, and behind the counter, there was a young woman who looked exactly like Ciri from the game. A perfect real life copy, minus the scar. I can't even begin to describe how mindblowing that was. 😊
@@Alex-nk8bw You should have said: "hey, you look like Ciri from the Witcher 3" and then see how she reacted. If she understood, you could have stricken up a conversation with her.
That grand escape with yeniffer and cahir was top notch comedy! a real monty python skit. Holy fuck if yenifer is that strong why does she cares about losing magic. Lets just have her become a witcher too! she is so intelligent, so powerful, so charismatic why is geralt is even in this show XD.
I was absolutely stunned the way they forced the awkward cussing into the show, like how could they not see how cringe-worthy that was. It reminds me of hearing the older kids do it growing up and you start copying them to sound cool.
Vesemir is so wooden, I don’t know if it’s the actor or the writing, but half of his scenes he just sits and looks nowhere. Witchers are having an orgy behind his back and he just talks to Geralt like it’s just the two of them, Lambert makes fun of Ciri and she runs crying and Vesemir turns for a second to look and then he turns back and continues to eat (books Vesemir would’ve scolded them for bullying the little girl), when Geralt takes Ciri before she’s injected with the mutagen Vesemir just sits there and doesn’t do anything for like 20 seconds. It’s like he’s an extra on the set.
Doesn't it bother you that people like you and me, who buy games on discount. We have more consideration About these characters than the show runner who is making millions off of this.
Ever thought about watching for character's facial expressions?? Just because no words are spoken or he doesn't move, doesn't mean the actor is not acting. He was reeling with what he was about to do to Ciri and knew Geralt was very upset with him.
I’m kind of worried about what direction they’ll take Cahir in as a character. The general relationship and dynamic between Cahir and Geralt was really neat, and I’d hate to see it sacrificed in favor of Netflix’s original story. Geralt’s relationship with Cahir and the way it started and progressed could easily be derailed by throwing Yennefer in the mix, not to mention the changes to both Yennefer and Cahir’s characters. Depending on where the show takes Yennefer and Cahir’s relationship (I have not watched beyond season 2 episode 3) Geralt could be a lot more or a lot less trusting of Cahir by the time he joins Geralt’s company. It’s hard to imagine any of these changes adding to the story, and very easy to imagine them being harmful to it. Also, I know it’s a long way off, but by god am I scared of what they’ll do to characters like Milva, Regis, Zoltan (and all the other dwarves), and Angoulême. I’m already not fond of the portrayal of Dandelion, and especially not he and Geralt’s “Shrek and Donkey” relationship as it’s so often called. I hope other characters don’t get the same treatment.
Zoltan is going to be an 8 foot tall actor suffering from giantism for the sake of representation, and Regis is going to be a 20 yr old, tan, blonde haired American surfer bro.
8:06 "Answer for this" seems more appropriate here, I'd agree. He answers for what he did. "Answer to this" can also be said, but it's said in a context like "You will answer to the council", as in answering TO a person or a group of people, which makes less sense in that scene.
@@xLetalis Maybe by "this" she was referring to the way he was made to fly through the air? Not sure, haven't watched S2 and not sure if I will given the reviews, so I lack context. But it sounded like she meant some sort of her own magic.
Actually, "You will answer to your deeds before the court" or "You will answer to your sins before God" was correct about 400-700 years ago. It just hasn't been used for a very long time and follows the patters of "answer to (something) before (someone)"; you wouldn't just use "You will answer to (something)" without the second part. Very old versions of the bible used this sentence structure a lot. Since the rest of the show's conversations follow modern English grammar throughout, it's either poor script-writing or one of many writers deciding to throw in some lines using archaic grammar and nobody picking up on it while proof-reading.
One good thing about the show deviating from the books is that they didn’t introduce Essi Daven, because if they did I’m sure they’d massacre her character too, and that would make me very sad.
Tbh shoving two short stories in a season that is just 8 episodes long would be way too much. That short story would take at least a couple of episodes to get any depth.
@@I_THE_ME Pretty sure even since season 1, they've established that they rather cut any short story down to 1 episode, even if extending it to just two would've given much more depth and understanding for it. Having any depth is definitely not a priority unless it's their own originally written storyline, and even then we see how that turns out.
This one wasn’t quite as off-putting as some of them were for me. If the writers feel the need to add things in that aren’t book material I’d rather them make up a brand new story/plot than absolutely butcher the ones we all know and love. Ruining the actual plot as it appears in the books is the only thing I am concerned about now. I hope Netflix can avoid doing that any more than they already have.
everytime you show bits from Witcher 3's promotional material i think to myself that i would rather watch the witcher series in this 3d animated style than the real life series

They even broke their own lore. In s2 when Filavandrel was speaking with Francesca abt Dol Blathanna, this what he told her: "You promised us Dol Blathanna, How much longer must we search in vain?" Yet in s1 Filavandrel was already in Dol Blathanna when he captured Geralt and Jaskier in the cave.
The elf story line was utter nonsense. In season 1 Filavandrel is just outside Dol Blathanna and has "a new generation of Elevian who wish to fight", in season 2 the elves are wandering around looking for Dol Blathanna and haven't been able to give birth in decades...
I would like to add that in S2 Elves have already their camps (with banners!) and traps to defend themselves (in fact, Fringilla's crew was killed by the wooden spikes) but still they are easily herded in Nilfgaard because they are helpless and lost in their quest of finding Dol Blathanna...
Yeah, totally agree with you. Yennefer's escape was a total nonsense and boring to watch. Can't belive no-one moved a finger to stop her they just stood in their fancy chairs and watched. They messed her character so bad and the script was awful.
I almost burst out laughing as she cut down those burning pires with the axe, as if it would do anything to help her escape lmfao. Dumb ass choreography and it just looked cringe as hell seeing her do that.

Imagine building up the tension of the Leshen fight, featuring it in the trailer, even sacrificing one of the main witchers from the books, just to have it killed by another monster. I was really looking forward to seeing Geralt face down a Leshen, and they flopped it.

Thank you for making a big deal of how Yen escaped the execution scene without any chase or explanation of why they were allowed to escape so easily. Any of the mages, or indeed royal guardsmen would have caught them. Also, how does this work if Yen is on the run from the Brotherhood when we need to set up her and Geralt coming back for certain events that kick of Time of Contempt?
Pretty sure Thanedd will happen differently (if it happens at all). The common will be only name and a mage conflict theme. Some other mage will bring Ciri - Triss maybe? Yen will be ACTUALLY helping Nilfgaard? Or Yen and Cahir will not even be there? Or they will be there and Cahir will help Ciri escape Vilgefortz? With Hissrich, everything is possible.
@@Eth77930 The two obvious answers are: 1) Thanedd happens but Geralt, Ciri, Yen aren't there. This sets up the Lodge of Sorceresses and Vilgefortz. Ciri accidentally teleports away (a la Witcher 3) after being attacked [by the Wild Hunt] Yen goes to meet with the Lodge for help to find Ciri - this is a failure and she instead links up with Istredd setting up the Geralt-Istredd rivaly short story. Ciri gets picked up by Cahir after teleporting away. 2) Geralt, Ciri, Yen are persuaded to come to Thanedd by Triss or Istredd on the promise of getting amnestry from the Brotherhood hunting them. The coup happens and Ciri accidentally teleports away (a la Witcher 3). Cahir might be there and frees Geralt from Dijkstra's captivity and joins up with him there. Either way the Towers aren't going to be in the show, since they are irrelevant at this point since Ciri can make portals herself across space and across worlds.
The feeding witchers to wolves as a funerary service is an interesting concept, but given a leshy infected Eskel, what's to stop the wolves mutating by eating his flesh?
This season was so bad, that I had to begin read the books.. (and they are SOOO much better) The nightmare of the wolf connection is so obvisus that the writers just forgot about it.. :D

Don’t know if it’s commented on earlier but in the books, “Sorel” was a mage and the antagonist in Season of Storms. Given how this series is all over the place, I don’t know if that’s what the writers were going for in terms of the scene or what.
The thing that attacks Ciri is somewhere between a giant centipede (like the one attacking her in Brokilon in the books) and one of Sorels creations in the SoS. So you are right, it is all over the place.

Ah yes. The downward spiral of Yennefer's character in the show. I didn't even liked how they handled her last season, but they managed to keep pushing it down even more. Why force all this drama and action on her when you can simply have her mentor Ciri? It shows off a different side of Yen and it gives Ciri development. Even if they can't be accurate, it prolly couldn't hurt to try to let the plot flow in the general direction the book was flowing, right? What did Yennefer in the show get after all that drama? An empire that not only invaded a neighbor, but that sacked, burned and slaughtered its capitol. Then, in service to this empire, she proceeds to use forbidden magic, casually feeding fellow mages into single-use suicide spells, and emplying soldiers equipped with flesh-eating suicide magic TO LAY SMOKE SCREENS. And then she complains that her chosen faction is portrayed as evil imperialists. That's like a sexual predator complaining about being labelled a rapist, while being balls deep in his latest victim who is begging for mercy..... It's a lack of self-awareness that must at least rival that of the show runners.
Fringilla not realizing she's the baddie is one of the most realistic aspects of the show. People do terrible things when they think they're justified, as shown in the last episode with elves killing children for revenge. One of the themes of the books is the place of evil in our lives and if there's a bigger or a lesser evil and which one is right or not. Plenty of things to dislike in the show but I think this is not part of them.
@@thear1s I would be fine with it if she made some rationalisation as to why she was morally justified in her methods, but this is ludicrous. She's literally confused as to why the empire that invaded a neighbor on a pretext, sacked and burned its capitol in a brutal manner and that uses dark magic focused around suicide and blood sacrifice is seen as evil and imperialist. It's not like Nilfgaard invaded to stop a civil war and relive a famine. There simöly are not enough, or really any, moral grey areas for her to negotiate, because qe have not seen Nilfgaard, or her, do anything morally good to balance or justify the bad, but that's not even the issue. The problem isnt that she thinks she's not a bad guy, the problem is that shes portrayed as completely unable to fathom why the faction that we so far have seen only do bad things has an image problem. There are innumerable ways they could have made Nilfgaard morally ambiguous, like in the books, they could have played on the wars between the northern kingdoms for example, setting independence vs stability. But in the show, they do none of that, all we as the audience have are the atrocities and the facist feel the show runners cultivated for both Fringilla and Nilfgaard.
@@gustavchambert7072 It's actually pretty realistic. The IRL British Empire went to war with China over the right to continue selling them opium while claiming in their propaganda at home that they are bringing wealth and civilization to savages. Pretty much all Imperialist empire justify their expansionism as bringing peace, wealth, and civilization to those poor unfortunates who are too savage and stupid to realize the benevolence they are receiving so they must be slaughtered to teach them to stay in their rightful place. Also see: Iraq War, Libya, Afghanistan, Conquering of the Americas, Conquering of Africa, Roman conquest of Britain, Roman conquest of .. well most of the mediterranean,
@@chriss790 sure, but there is cognitive dissonance "Im not a bad guy, it was NECESSARY" and any number of variations, and then there is straight up being an idiot. Fringilla isnt complaining that people only see the bad things Nilfgaard do, she completely fails to understand why on earth anyone would have a negative opinion. It's mostly a problem of bad writing. If we the viewers had actually been shown Nilfgaard doing ANYTHING good/positive/benevolent whatsoever, or being generally made up of humane and serious people, it would not have come across as delusional. Instead we have Ms. "I force other mages to become suicide fireballs lolz" wondering why the "we burned the capital of our neighbor for no reason"-empire has a bad reputation
@Adolfthejewbaka _ we should be giving props to Cavil. He’s trying to be the optimistic book fan who can’t speak his true mind because he plays the main fucking character, if it was me I’d have left after I found out how dog ass they were gonna make one of my favorite fantasy epics.
It somehow feels like they took some of the feedback (like Triss having slightly red hair), but at the same time doubled down on so many other issues, things they change from the books and/or games for whatever reason, double down on changing looks of characters without explanation - they even change monsters and their skills somehow. The writing didn't really improve much, some characters that were already not great in S1 seem even worse in S2 (Like Yen). They seem to forget sometimes that some things should be here (like witcher eye color. Why are they sometimes there and sometimes not - even for the same character like wtf) So the only thing that improved somehow is special effects. I'm still sitting here asking "why" - are they actively trying to anger fans? Or do they think the "new fans" that don't know jack shit about this universe will stay with so little things really explained (I had to tell my GF several times how things actually work so she understands some of it. And then I have to tell her that they even changed that in the show somehow without really going into it.)? Its so... strange, and disappointing. Mostly disappointing. The only thing that made me laugh is the fact that they didn't even know their own anime show.
I know next to nothing of the books so when that random witcher named "Coen" kept showing up in the place of Ezkel during the entire season I kept yelling at the screen "WHO ARE YOU,? I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOUR NAME! WHY ARE YOU HERE?" I've played the games so this was going to be my first introduction to the characters I loved from CDPR's take on the universe and then they immediatly kill Ezkel after transforming him into a drunk womanizing monster made of plastic wood.
That Yen escape was really the nail in the coffin. Can you imagine for a second the amount of strength and precision required to hit the chains without hitting Cahir and BREAK THEM ?!? All that with the worst balanced kind of axe ever designed, done by a sorceress that may have never held an axe in her life ? On that angle ? A 45° hit ? I'm not even sure she can see the chains from where she is.
Ya that felt like a massive let down. You have this cool creature who killed eskel so there is a connection there...it's formidable...looks scary..and then some deformed giant just axes it out of nowhere. Expectations subverted. 😑
@@bryan81584 I don't see why they needed to introduce a second monster when they already established how this Leshy was different and a menace. Imagine if we got a scene where this Leshy starts talking to Ciri highlighting how her intent was not to kill her but find her. Poor Eskel who pretty much died for nothing.
If Yennefer is a traitor of the Chapter I don't know how she could assist to the Thanedd reunion but if she isn't there with Ciri it will destroy almost all the rest of the books plot lines. Almost all the choice they have made in this season destroy a lot plot lines of the next books so I can already tell you that this show will have almost nothing to do with the next books at least they make drastic adaptation choices to get closer to the original saga.
They're gonna find some dumb excuse for Yen, Geralt & Ciri to be at Thanned, but they're no way it's even slightly close to how it happens in the books
I also have the feeling that Thanedd will not happen, or it will be completely different. Because what they have now for Cahir and Yen seems like a Thanedd aftermath - Cahir somewhere in the northern kingdoms, after he failed his mission, and Yennefer considered renegade by the Lodge (for supposedly helping Nilfgaard and Brotherhood at the coup).
Thanedd still has to happen to set up Vilgefortz as the main villain. However, there is no reason for Ciri, Geralt, or Yen to be there. Since Ciri is already teleporting to other worlds by herself, I'm sure they'll take inspiration from the games and just have Ciri randomly teleport away after some kind of crisis to separate them - maybe an attack by the Wild Hunt. The two towers are totally irrelevant now.
A question i´m asking myself is, why did the leshen die after getting torn into two parts while Vesemir said only fire through the heart can bring a leshen down. Anyone inside?
Just a few days ago I stumbled across a quote from Jon Favreau. Naturally is it about Star Wars, but that doesn't really matter: "We always knew, and this is something I learned from over at Marvel and working with Kevin Feige, is you always want to keep the core fans in mind, because they have been the ones that've been keeping the torch lit for many, many years, but these are also the stories for young people and for new audiences. These are myths, and so you always want to have an outstreched hand to people who might not have that background. And so you're really telling two stories at once. You're telling the story for the people who are fresh eye, and you're telling the story for the people who've been there with the property and with the stories and the characters for so many years, and make sure that you're honouring them, as well."
It’s very different for the witcher. It’s never been a marketing behemoth that Star Wars was. Also, who are the core fans? People who read the books first? I doubt it. Most of the shows popularity comes from the games. Which aren’t the original works anyway
@@ynwa9885 Of course this franchise is much smaller than Star Wars, but it has grown significantly over the past years. Core fans could just as well be the entire fan base before the show came out. I don't care weither people only read the books, only played the game(s) or have been around for over two decades or just joined recently
@@blaubeer8039 I still believe they would have made more money if they had adapted the books. These might be extreme examples but look at the Lord of the Rings movies vs the Eragon adaption
When I heard the actor that played the Dock guard speak, sounded familiar and had to look it up. That is none other than Cleaver the dwarf from Witcher 3!
I read an article that they once wanted to kill a random witcher name "John" I believe, but then the showrunner decided to change it to Eskal because it will give Geralt much more solid reason for his character development. Funny thing is, they believe Eskal's death will give a major impact to the fans since he's the major character in the books and the games, but the story works just fine without killing him (even better I believe), and if they killed him for the sake of the new audiences so they feel the intense because he's the major character, people who only watch the series wouldn't know that since he only appeared in one single episode to be consider as major character, so why bother?
English here. Yes the expression is to 'answer for this'. That line sounded a bit wierd to me when I watched the episode. Really enjoying your reviews, they seem really fair and well thought out.
Your videos are like the sweet candy one gets after being force-fed this awful crap. Please please when all 8 episode critiques are done, xLetalis, I think it would be great if you could make a video addressing the larger issues of the show… imo how it's trying to be a store-brand GoT instead of its own unique thing, how the humor, tones, themes, wittiness, heart and soul of the books are butchered or non-existent.
@@xLetalis you and Proper Bird are the only people that don’t just except all the BS changes, and call them out. Sadly, she got so much backlash from her early videos from last season that I don’t think she’ll speak on this one. She even removed the first long rant about season 1 that I thought was great.
@@CharlesZane_ Oh had never heard of Proper Bird before, now I'm sad she removed her video cuz I got interested. It is crazy how far the show defenders go and how offended they get from criticism of the show
@@xLetalis thanks, looking forward to that. Your videos are the antidote to the rage this series left me with. It's good to know I am not crazy or the only one who is thoroughly disappointed by this lame show. So much potential, so little achieved.
I’ve been trying to tell my friends who haven’t read the books how much they’ve butchered the execution of the show, I keep coming back to “Imagine the first 2 hours of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone are sliced into thirds and we get 40 minutes of Harry’s backstory then they make up 40 minutes each worth of backstory for Ron and Hermoine on the spot, then imagine on top of that trying to squeeze the rest of philosophers stone and chamber of secrets into the half an hour you have left”. Season 1 was so rocky and all over the place and I would’ve preferred if it was just adapted Geralt short stories which leads to (as what happens in the books) Ciri and Yennefer being introduced naturally instead of “Geralt kills monster, cut to Ciri running in a forest for 10 mins, cut to Yennefer failing at magic for 10 mins, cut back to Geralt”. I wasn’t expecting much from Season two but holy $hit they’ve just thrown it all down the toilet and made a parody fanfic with Witcher characters. I really like Cavill as Geralt, when I reread the books its him I picture in my head as the character (sort of like a when I say the name James Bond whichever actor comes to mind first is your definitive favorite) and Ciri’s character has definitely been improved so much from Season 1 but these are characters I really love being placed in the wrong story. The only part of S2 I liked was the nod to the videogame swords in Kaer Morhen and that was only because it reminded me of fonder Witcher memories. In a Graham Norton interview he puts it to Cavill that Henry is a massive fan of the books and games and Cavill gives us a rundown of how he “Likes to remain faithful to the material” (Similar to Hissrich) and I was scowling at my phone asking where tf that faithful input was when making Season two. Game of Thrones had the unfortunate downfall of running out of source material, The Witcher has a well of it and chooses to ignore it. By all means enjoy the visuals and the effects, I really liked how they made the Striga come to life in Season 1 I thought it was really good effects, but as a fan who loved the games and adored the books, Netflix’s adaptation is as wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle
But they did remain faithful to the source material! ... By copying passages from the books and having entirely different characters play them lol (for example the scene where Tissaia tortures Cahir exists in the books as well only it is Philippa who tortures a guy in Oxenfurt this way)
@@contra1124 You know what I’ve been too harsh! I was so happy a good staple character like Nivellen was in the show……..only his backstory is completely changed……oh and Geralt knows him already………and Ciris there too (Because of the confusing timeline whoops)! The witchers not having cat eyes did my head in, how can they be witchers if they don't have cat eyes wtf??? Did the show runners mistakenly think only Geralt has cat eyes?
I suspect the writers never actually read the books or played the games. They just heard the cliff notes of the universe and said " Yeah, that will make money! Let's do it!"
Yeah thats curious no doubt. Either have them all with cat eyes or none. Or try to explain why some do and others dont. A quick couple sentences is all they needed. Doesnt need to be a whole episode or anything. Maybe a discussion while they are all in the hall eating?
@@mokko759 I suspect you never actually read the books, In the books it states that witchers can change their eyes to become cat like to help see through changing light and the drinking of the potion "cat", That means they don't always have cat like eyes, only when they need them. Geralt is the only witcher with the creepy yellow eyes in the books due to the enhanced mutagens he underwent. All witchers having yellow cat eyes at all times was something only from the games, so I see you're just another fake book fan whos only played the games, its okay this comment section is full of you guys :)
About the escape: the kings mentioned something about a barrier, that prevented magic from happening at that place. So the other mages would not be able to stop her with magic
I found Yen's escape or the reasoning behind the need for her to execute Cahir immersion-breaking D: The acting has improved greatly imo, but the writing and some of the lines were just... meh..
@@xLetalis There's so many of these logical inconsistencies this season where it just felt like the writers wanted certain thing to happen or the plot to move certain way and just made it happen no matter how much sense it makes. Examples: The escape, people teleporting in and out of Kaer Morhen and making it seem like Kaer Morhen is 1kilometer away from Cintra, Leshen magic getting inside Kaer Morhen without any Witcher noticing it, Yennefer getting her magic back randomly, Ciri learning magic super fast (because fuck taking time to establish how hard it is to stydy magic and Ciri's relationship to Yen). What hurts me the most is how badly the Northern Monarchs are portrayed. I think only Vizimir and Kaedwens leader (Is it Henselt already or someone else?) are ok. In the books Foltest is described as being slim and almost too pretty, not much more needs to be said about that. The one to the left is probably leader of Kovir, nothing special, but then Demavend (Maybe?) and Meve to the right... Where is Meve's golden hair, and why does she look like a scheming child instead of the ballsy woman we see in Thronebreaker? And then lastly Demavend, who looks as much as a Northern Monarch as a bee looks like a bird.
Meve's casting was god damn terrible. She is supposed to be a Warrior queen on par with Calanthe..not a baby faced princess. Not to mention the subject matter of the meeting being warped. The dialogue in that meeting in BoE is one of my favorite parts of the books and it the show just did a weak job of presenting it
He would need to do 1 hour videos....its just too much. Like...for this episode..... Witchers were actually nice to Ciri in the books. Eskel is still alive. Cohen was super friendly with Ciri and even played childish games with her. They were all super protective about her. Sure, they did train her but they were way more careful and she had to kind of hide her injuries under her clothes. No Leshen plot obviously Yen was not considered a traitor. She was actually promoted into the council. So she was promoted into one of the highest ranks within the brotherhood. And....she had her full magic powers all the way. Francesca was also a member of the brotherhood but she was even higher rank vs Yen. Francesca was at the same rank as Tissaia and Vilgefortz. They were top dogs within the Brotherhood. Obviously Francesca was not leading a rag tag band of freedom fighters and she was not anywhere near Cintra. Cahir was in fact inside a prison cell.....but down south in Nilfgaard. He had been arrested because he had 1 job and he failed. His 1 job was obviously to capture Ciri. No plot about Yen executing Cahir because they never even met in the books. Fringilla??? Should be somewhere in Toussaint studying magic. And this is just like the main points in this episode....not even going scene by scene......imagine how long it would be.
Best assume they're not even adapting books at this point, because they really just aren't. It's a fanfic with some references to the books here and there, nothing more.

I don't mind swears it but it's clearly overused in Yennefer's dialogue. Only "shitgaard" made mi smile as it's not so easy to make that word in my native polish.
It's almost like, in the Netflix show, she is going through the worst part of her life.
"Fire through the heart is the only thing that will kill a Leshy."
The right next episode it's ripped in half and instantly killed by a random monster.
Also:
Vesemir in the anime: There are a couple of ways you can kill a leshen
*mentions three different ways*
In complete fairness, it's a totally never-before-seen monster that the witchers have no clue what to categorize it as, so that possibly means one or two things:
1. it has some strange mutant bullshit within it allowing it to kill leshies in a way the witchers don't know,
2. expanding on that idea, witchers don't know everything about monsters and monster-slaying, even though they posture like they do.
It's a bit convenient, but it's not, like, totally bullshit convenient imo. The World is routinely seen to be a setting with a lot of mysteries, even moreso when accounting for the mysteries that people lie about having the answers to.
@@celticbabs3105 If there was several ways to kill, I don't think Vesemir would so firmly state that fire through the heart is *the only thing*

@@wildfireDZ I just pretend this show is not "the witcher" but "The Yennefer fairy tale".
Probably not the first time people have heard this take but this show is absolutely carried by people who has never seen any other Witcher content except maybe played the Witcher 3 I think Netflix is taking advantage of having a massive causal audience and pretty much changing the story wherever they see fit even in small or weird or just flat out dumb ways
( turning eskel into a leshen unnecessarily)
Hence the large amount of W3 references. The way they added them felt so...obvious?

I'm a Team Yen guy, to death. This character writing is cringe. I think all the actors are doing the best with what they are given though.
F'ck"

I'm almost sure the targeted audience is people with the lowest standards that just have the show in the background while browsing on their phones.
The writer was trying to establish why those morons deserve to be crushed by Emhyr. No just kidding. Lazy direction that's it.
Exactly, there were like five kings in one place, place should be surrounded with guards.
This is the episode where everything starts to go downhill.
There I said it. hahaha
Plus, they seem to go out of their way to crap on the source material, games and books both

Funny (or outrageous?) how in the episode witchers are just taunting Ciri to break all her bones on the training devices. Yeah, great trainers, outstanding methodology.
Quite unlike the books in which each device had its theory, explanation on what was its purpose, what are the necessary steps for Ciri to succeed etc...
where each witchertryed to help her cause they liked her they cared for her and would never do anything to hurt her
Because all that takes hard work and effort for these Netflix guys. It's way easier to portray men as dicks to women hindering them. Like come on
I would have far rather had more time on Ciri training and her relationship with the witchers than that long and drawn out fabricated storyline they created for Yennefer (simply because Lauren decided Yen's book story was boring). Wait, isn't the "child of destiny" supposed to be able to become a Witcher without being injected mutagen, as the legend says in the books ?

Yeah I think she should've said "You'll answer to me" or "to us" if she wanted to use "to"
@@xLetalis Maybe by "this" she was referring to the way he was made to fly through the air? Not sure, haven't watched S2 and not sure if I will given the reviews, so I lack context. But it sounded like she meant some sort of her own magic.
It was just poor writing
I as watched it I understood this line as "you will answer to *this spell I just casted*", but it's maybe an editing mistake in post ?
Just the thought of that makes me hurt as well.

It woud make me sad to not be sad too.
Fuck.

@@I_THE_ME Pretty sure even since season 1, they've established that they rather cut any short story down to 1 episode, even if extending it to just two would've given much more depth and understanding for it. This one wasn’t quite as off-putting as some of them were for me. Yet in s1 Filavandrel was already in Dol Blathanna when he captured Geralt and Jaskier in the cave.

I would like to add that in S2 Elves have already their camps (with banners!) and traps to defend themselves (in fact, Fringilla's crew was killed by the wooden spikes) but still they are easily herded in Nilfgaard because they are helpless and lost in their quest of finding Dol Blathanna...

@@Eth77930 The two obvious answers are:
1) Thanedd happens but Geralt, Ciri, Yen aren't there.

Ah yes. The downward spiral of Yennefer's character in the show. I didn't even liked how they handled her last season, but they managed to keep pushing it down even more. Why force all this drama and action on her when you can simply have her mentor Ciri? It shows off a different side of Yen and it gives Ciri development.

I was losing my mind watching this season, but your reviews made me realize that I was right all along
The general public's views towards this trash of a series has me seriously concerned of mankind's intellectual future.
@@zydrate5098 Apparently Season 2 is Netflix' most watched show or something, at least in the opening week
@@xLetalis The views don't surprise me to be honest, since there was hardly any shortage of hype. But given how disconnected the series is from the actual source material, it does make me wonder if they merely used the Witcher fanbase to hype up their generic mediocre fantasy setting that doesn't even make an effort at doing justice to the source material. The more this series goes on the more I'm convinced this is the case, and the more my attitude towards Netflix turns from being disappointed to hostile. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
Good content as always (and please make an edit where Ciri rightfully dies of internal hemorrhaging from that pendulum hit).
Since I haven't seen anyone else say it, yes the phrase is "you will answer for this." it stood out to me too as a native English speaker.
The scene with Fringilla conplainig is definitely a low-point in the show, and that says quite alot.
It is the woman who betrayed her school and her classmates to join an expansionist empire.

Yeah I feel this is a bad argument mate. Baddies having cognitive dissonance is quite normal
"I force other mages to become suicide fireballs lolz" wondering why the "we burned the capital of our neighbor for no reason"-empire has a bad reputation
man your editing is so awesome...that "boo" at 1:15 really got me :D
The only guy who cares is Henry... he's the only hope this world has.
I think he releases all his frustration by playing on his PC. That's how he's been keeping his sanity in check.
@Adolfthejewbaka _ we should be giving props to Cavil. He’s trying to be the optimistic book fan who can’t speak his true mind because he plays the main fucking character, if it was me I’d have left after I found out how dog ass they were gonna make one of my favorite fantasy epics.
Your statement about 'answer to this' is correct, you always answer for a crime, wonder if they had some other idea with that line but who knows
Netflix missed another beat here. If they’d killed of a cat school Witcher instead of E, we could have seen them feed him to a bunch of tabby’s!
Why are they sometimes there and sometimes not - even for the same character like wtf)
So the only thing that improved somehow is special effects.
WHY ARE YOU HERE?"
I've played the games so this was going to be my first introduction to the characters I loved from CDPR's take on the universe and then they immediatly kill Ezkel after transforming him into a drunk womanizing monster made of plastic wood.
Exactly! Ciri actually has a nice relationship with Coen in the books but it’s completely non existent here
That Yen escape was really the nail in the coffin.
The Leshen looked so cool and I hated the way it was just offed though. RIP Elder Leshen
That was my first thought as well, as soon as she swung the axe and freed Cahir..."there goes the Thanned Coup"
I think they won’t do the Thanedd at all. I believe they will change it to a series of events in Cintra and Ciri will be separated there.
Maybe he dies for now, but reborn later. I mean, he not died completely. :/
He says there are a couple ways to kill a leshen in the anime
Thank you for this video. It's gonna help me through the devastation of losing my dog unexpectedly today.
Just a few days ago I stumbled across a quote from Jon Favreau. Naturally is it about Star Wars, but that doesn't really matter:
"We always knew, and this is something I learned from over at Marvel and working with Kevin Feige, is you always want to keep the core fans in mind, because they have been the ones that've been keeping the torch lit for many, many years, but these are also the stories for young people and for new audiences.
I don't care weither people only read the books, only played the game(s) or have been around for over two decades or just joined recently

well said :)
@@blaubeer8039 I still believe they would have made more money if they had adapted the books. These might be extreme examples but look at the Lord of the Rings movies vs the Eragon adaption
When I heard the actor that played the Dock guard speak, sounded familiar and had to look it up. That is none other than Cleaver the dwarf from Witcher 3!
indeed! Hans of Ciradis as well!
The typical expression is indeed "you'll answer FOR this".
Struck me as odd. Seems to have been used in the same way
they do not can even write that the right way haha
Your videos are like the sweet candy one gets after being force-fed this awful crap.
Please please when all 8 episode critiques are done, xLetalis, I think it would be great if you could make a video addressing the larger issues of the show… imo how it's trying to be a store-brand GoT instead of its own unique thing, how the humor, tones, themes, wittiness, heart and soul of the books are butchered or non-existent.
Thank you :) I will likely do such a video after all the reviews, similar to my "worst mistakes of season 1"
@@xLetalis definitely looking forward to that 👍🏻
P.S: Happy New Year! 😅
But they did remain faithful to the source material! ... By copying passages from the books and having entirely different characters play them lol
(for example the scene where Tissaia tortures Cahir exists in the books as well only it is Philippa who tortures a guy in Oxenfurt this way)
Or LotR. Imagine adaptation where Sam, Merry or Pippin die the moment after introduction.
@@contra1124 You know what I’ve been too harsh! I was so happy a good staple character like Nivellen was in the show……..only his backstory is completely changed……oh and Geralt knows him already………and Ciris there too (Because of the confusing timeline whoops)! I liked how the actor played him but even at that he was a beloved character from Game of Thrones so all I thought of it at the end was ‘Tormund looks weird without a beard’

Incoming answer from incompetent writers and fanboys: there are cats with grey green and blue eyes 😂
Perhaps just an oversight while filming
@@mokko759 I suspect you never actually read the books, In the books it states that witchers can change their eyes to become cat like to help see through changing light and the drinking of the potion "cat", That means they don't always have cat like eyes, only when they need them.
The dialogue in that meeting in BoE is one of my favorite parts of the books and it the show just did a weak job of presenting it
I would like for you to also mention how much they shifted away from the books in each episode as well if that's possible.
No Leshen plot obviously
Yen was not considered a traitor.
