    Um, Tyler, Amazon doesn't just import goods, not is it the only source of imported goods sold to Americans.

  • @oh515
    @oh515 10 днів тому +4

    When it comes to products imported to Norway it has to do with selection and variety of products. We can get what ever we want at Amazon, but we don’t get the product the day after with free shipping.
    It’s not that we doesn’t have agreements with other countries either. It’s because of our tiny market and the wholesalers therefore won’t take too high risks. So, we are in a situation where the wholesalers must choose what products they believe the Norwegian market wants. If it’s a hit, they will stay with the product or producer till the market is fully met.
    But if we want to take the risk and even wait for the product, we can get almost anything we want. Even start imports as a reseller if there’s products we believe the market wants and needs. But most of us is satisfied with the income, so why damage our free time with such hassle.

    Norwegians also take for granted to order things online, absolutely everyything, from breakfast to clothes and medical, etc. And to have express shipping. Amazon is an American company, and we have other companys in Europe and Scandinavia. 🎉

    Importing from other countries have recently been added a tax. We did have free of tax for low priced items, but current politicians have removed that and halved taxfree quota.
    Dental is only covered by certain medical conditions. Otherwise you have to pay for it yourself, and it's one of our most expensive services.

    i don't mind the dental cost in Norway. To be fair, i get a 75% discount. For example, last time i went to the dentist, i had to drill a couple teeth because of cavities. 06:24 VAT is from the total cost of the item plus shipping (plus Tollavgift/Customs Duty), that makes the total cost for Jeffefery: 30kr (Item) + 180kr (Shipping) = 210kr + 25% = 262.5kr

  • @jarls5890
    @jarls5890 9 днів тому +1

    About imports. You will have to pay VAT on the full value of the item, including the cost of shipping. VAT on most things is 25% (e.g. on books it is 0%).
    Then there is an "import handling fee" on top of that.
    Example: You buy something that costs $100 and you pay $30 for shipping. Total $130,-
    VAT on that is: $33,-
    And I believe handling fee is around $25,- (varies depending on company handling transport)
    Your $100 item total now is $188!
    $130 you already paid when you placed the order - then you have to pay an additional $58 on pickup.

    I just bought a T-shirt from a UK based online store. 275 NOK for the T-shirt including shipping and tax - not that bad. Then Norwegian VAT came to 57 NOK. Customs fee was 17 NOK. Plus the postal service fee for customs handling, 45 NOK. By the time it got to me, the 275 NOK had become 394 NOK. It's rediculous.

    04:47 Norway does, but... For some unexplainable reason, the Norwegian healthcare system does not view Teeth as part of your body, so anything - or most anything - related to teeth is not covered by the healthcare system. Don't ask me why, it boggles my mind, because without teeth you can't eat normally, and tooth or gum infections could even become lethal if not treated fast enough or properly. Still not covered, though...

    We have universal healthcare, but we also have politicians who think teeth are NOT a part of your body or related to health. So you have to pay through your teeth (pun very much intended) to get your teeth fixed. I bought a hoodie online once and it cost 400NOK to just get into the country....that's not including the 500NOK the hoodie cost. It's cheaper if you order from europe and EU countries tho but if you're getting stuff from outside europe it costs an arm and a leg. The last few years the healthcare has recieved a lot budget cuts leading to longer waiting-times and less doctors wanting to work in the public sector so people LOSE their GP to the private market and if you go to a private GP you do not get state help to cover the prices. Instead of using the oil fund to make public healthcare better they are demanding sick people pay more before they get free healthcare. And a lot of people struggle to pay to begin with. In Norway we have something called "OBOS" which is basically a "home-owners association" that people can become members of and get cheaper appartements....only problem is if your parents don't sign you up for OBOS as a teenager, you will be waitlisted and never get the same advantage of the people who are members. Anything that is not alcohol or tobacco is illegal. Because the politicians use alcohol and tobacco so they can't have restrictions on it...but hey, at least 5 major political leaders have admitted to using cannabis so....soon enough they will simply HAVE to listen to us pot-smokers. "Konfliktsky" means "conflict-avoidant". We don't really speak our mind too often because doing so is considered rude. Mørk sjokolade is just...dark chocolate. Chocolate with less sugar and more coca is considered not very tasty by most norweigans...not me tho, I love a 80% pure coca chocolate.

    When it comes to corruption and politics it’s mostly not about corruption per se, but it’s not good at all for the confidence and trust. The problem is that too many only wants to punish ‘the other politicians,’ and still supporting politicians who are even worse. The people will never been taken seriously when they show the same double standards. That’s the main reason why the Minister of Foreign Affairs could get the job as Ambassador in the USA after she was permitted from the Minister position.

    The dentist becomes expensive only if you don’t take care of your teeth. If there are some other reasons behind teeth issues, you mostly get it subsided. It’s free until you reach the age of 19 years. But yes, there are still some categories of issues that are left behind.

    • @Henoik
      @Henoik 9 днів тому +2

      Most issues are not subsidised unless you're under the age of 25, you're a student, or you have a congenital disease. There's a reason why so many people go to Lithuania or Latvia for dental treatments. A regular checkup can run you just under 1000 kroner as well, which is too expensive for many people, even as an annual expense. Luckily, there are now starting to come more and more private dental insurance schemes that subsidise even regular checkups.

      My impression is that dental is a bit cheaper than in the US. Some examples from my own recent experience:
      Checkup with cleaning: $90 (equivalent)
      Simple extraction of wisdom tooth: $180,-
      Complex extraction of wisdom tooth at specialist (dental surgeon): $450,-
      From the examples I've seen from the US it is far more expensive. But probably varies a lot from area to area.

      @@oh515 I am well aware of what gives the right for Helfo refunds - I have a diagnosis (not related to dental health at all) that grants me 40% refund for any and all dental treatment, elective or not. But most people don't fall within the six categories of patients that can get refunds for their treatments. Of course, after pressure from leftist youth parties it became much better a couple years ago, where people up until 25 years of age would get partial subsidies for all necessary dental treatment, but we still have ways to go before we can say we have a single-payer dental health care in Norway.

  • @oh515

    The dollar hasn’t suffered per se. Due to the gold standard all valuta has suffered, but the dollar is leading the market. The Norwegian kroner is down more than 30% to the dollar the last years. It depends how far back we are going.
    The US inflation, also the world inflation, is due to the American economic protectionism that started with Trump against the whole world and with an escalation by Biden against China with higher taxes on import. So the prices get higher to the end customer.
    The whole world is in an inflationary period. It makes the businesses afraid to reduce prices, and others use it as a tool for holding up its profits. That synergy makes the inflation last longer than necessary.
    Economic protectionism from the USA will also make the products more expensive in the USA, because lots of the products you import is far more cheaper to produce in other countries. But I’m afraid it will be even worse with Trump’s economic policy, and it will also affect the export prices even further than the strong US Dollar. Something that can also lead to economic inbreeding in most countries, especially in the USA, if other countries continue to cooperate.
    In this context, little Norway can wish for whatever it wants, but it will likely become even more dependent on cooperation with 'the big ones.'

      In an already strained and shrinking housing market, it's bad for the average buyer wanting to own something they could call their home, be it a house or an apartment.
      But when the people with over the average cash flow keeps on buying large portions of the housing market to better their already pretty cushy living.
      This forces the rest of the people having to rent instead, which in the long-run benefits the rich and weakens the average consumer, having to put aside their dream of owning.
      With this dang inflation, renting isn't exactly cheap either...
