@Fares - Thank you for posting this great video. It helped my breathing already. Out of curiosity, what's the brand of the swimming goggles you wear in the video?
It's all very well, you saying just watch the video, but it's the FEAR of WATER INGESTION, How do I combat this FEAR! It's a PHOBIA of Choking on the WATER, I'm Autistic, so what do I do to combat this ABSOLUTE TERROR!!
Thank you Fares! I am just returning to swimming after 20 years and I never got the hang of breathing underwater and the freestyle stroke when I was younger. I just do breast stroke with my head out of the water. I am determined to master this and on Monday it felt impossible like I would never get there. After watching this video three times and following the instructions to the letter for 2 one hour sessions at my local pool I swam a whole length of freestyle and a whole length of breast stroke (with proper technique and underwater exhalations) today and it felt good! I kept thinking of your words "be one with the water" and "I feel good"! That positive reinforcement is very important I feel. And damn I do feel good now!!! Thanks again!
This was super helpful! I'm not new to being in the water, but I just recently learned to swim with technique and the breathing part during freestyle is my biggest struggle. Will try these tips! Thank you!
I'm not new to swimming, but I have 48 years of bad habits that I have to overcome and unlearn! The habit of filling my chest with air, filling my cheeks with air, and holding it while I go underwater has become basic instinct with me, as I've done it since childhood! The other instinct I have that I'm focusing on overcoming is the reflex to swallow as the water comes up over my chin/ mouth/ nose area. I'm focusing on exhaling through my nose and I've made little progress, but progress nonetheless. My girlfriend got me goggles for Christmas so I can't wait to use them when I go to my next gym/ pool session! I will get comfortable with these techniques because I plan to visit Croatia with my girlfriend next year, and the beach she goes to doesn't have a shore that I can wade in. They climb down a ladder so as long as you're in the water, you're swimming! I can't wait, but I definitely have to strengthen my swimming and these videos are a tremendous help! Happy New Year!!
Thanks so much I’ve been able to swim for 20 years now but I’ve always had anxiety exhaling underwater and would always just breathe in and out with my head above water and I’d be exhausted so quickly. These breathing tips with bubbles will make me so much more comfortable being in the water!
I keep swallowing too much water! I don’t know why when I turn my head up I have ton of water cascading down my face and when I breathe in all that water goes inside my mouth. I’m actually a very good swimmer, otherwise, so not being able to breathe properly is beyond frustrating. 😢
@@porusedits no lol. I think I’m not level enough in the water. My lower half of body (legs and waist) might be too low in the water without realizing it, causing me to get dragged down too much.
@contreras9776 I don’t know if this will help you but my swimming instructor did mention that head positioning affects where your body ends up while swimming. I try to look down at the floor of the pool and it sometimes helps
@@anaiqbal4041 thank you! I also just saw the vid that talks about keeping head down and when breathing keeping one ear and one eye in water when taking a breath. Gonna try that 😊
This video is very helpful. I'm not a professional swimmer but to this day I struggle to turn and breathe resulting in me swimming from-to without breathing and makes me very exhausted 🙈 I'm watching this video again and again hoping to change my way of swimming. Thank you for sharing this knowledge sir. 🙏👍👏
This video helped me take swimming to the next level today. I feel like I hit a milestone today all thanks to incorporating humming into the breathing technique! Thanks!
There are a ton of these swimming videos for beginners. What they fail to mention that you need to have a certain level of fitness and mobility to be able to swim like that. I think a lot of people get discouraged when they try to follow these videos and found the reality to be completely different. Which is not very honest on the part of the video content creator. It is not that easy in the beginning to co-ordinate your legs and hands and head movement at the same time. There are exercises to build the muscle memory for an easier learning curve. e.g. if you shoulders are tight, you won't be able to lift your hand properly and will have a very ineffective stroke. If your hips are tight and have a weak core, the legs will keep sinking no matter how much practice you do for kicking and bubbling.
I think this is where I am! I see all the breathing, stroke and kick trainings and then I think, great - now to coordinate my body enough to be able to do all these things at the same time. Not easy, I think I need more strength and conditioning. Good points.
OK this was super helpful. Thank you. Can't wait to try getting in the pool again to try some of these. Breathing is THE hardest part, I love the tip of getting calm before even getting in the pool. Preparation! Thank you for the slow and specific instructions.
Good slow lesson and repeat practice…. Just what I needed. Will take that to the pool tomorrow. Even if that’s all I do for a few days. ❤. Liked and subscribed.
Sir I m learning swimming from last 15 days and i am stuck at the side breathing issue while doing freestyle.. i will surely try your techniques..❤ thanx
Fares, thank you so much for this educational video. When breathing do you want to exhale out of the mouth only or both mouth and nose? Also, when getting head out of water to breathe, do you want to breathe/inhale through the mouth only or both mouth and nose? I am confident you can answer these questions for me when you get a second. Thanks again for educating all beginner swimmers. Have a blessed day.
Exhale out of either your mouth or nose underwater! When you turn your head to breathe, inhale through your mouth. Try it out and let me know how it goes!

It's kinda hard for me to learn this when the coaches aren't giving me demonstrations and just telling me. Plus, they never told me the "keep your arm extended" bit! I'm gonna try this out during practice. Thanks again!
That’s exactly what I have to do is mediate before I get into the pool to bring down the anxiety. I didn’t realize this was a natural thing for beginners like myself
38 year old - Learning to swim at the moment and panic when I lift head up to breath as it’s seems to go straight up my nose as I put head back into water 😫
Being calm in the water is easy if you're not exerting yourself. Breathing much less frequent as you otherwise would during an intense cardio session and staying calm is not. My breathing frequency with other sports is much higher than whilst swimming. I can swim much longer with a snorkel, as my breathing frequency is more than double then..
I'm the same. Putting all those movements together never came together for me. With a snorkel and mask I can work on my form and skills. However, I just signed up for a swim class and I'm gonna have to learn how to breathe like a grown up. Thanks for the tips, SwimPro!
Just started swimming again after twenty years out of the water. When I was a kid, I had no problem putting my face in the water, but now as soon as I get water in my mouth or in my nose a little, I instinctively pull my face up.
I used to be pretty good at breathing underwater, but somewhere along the way, I couldn't do it anymore. I got more anxious about it. I've been attempting to do it again, but with very little progress and the memory of how to do it properly, which is why I found this video lol.
Thanks for this! I'm not really a beginner in swimming, but the breathing thing really helped! I've got tryouts for a competition tomorrow, I hope things go well!
Thanks for the video..still i have a basic query: While doing freestyle,do i breathe in through nose, while face is up,and breathe out, through mouth, while under water?
You breathe in through the mouth. When you're "blowing bubbles" under water, you'll be primarily breathing out through your nose. When you're more advanced, you may additionally breathe out in the air, just before you breathe in. That sort of breath will usually use the mouth. But don't worry about that bit until much later.
@@arunanshuray2948 Thank you very much for asking this question! It is really interesting how someone talks about breathing in the water, but does not emphasize at all how you do it exactly... It is like saying that you need to have a good punch for being a great boxer, but does not emphasize the techniques to fold the fingers and make it tight.
Thank you!!! So cool to see you in the water instead of by the whiteboard! Your step by step of moving the arms, turning the head all within the breathing technique was incredibly helpful. I still somehow get water up my nose and it weirds me out but this helped a great deal. Is it ok for my legs to sink sometimes when I’m rotating? Thanks for the great content!
it means your forehead/head is up too high. when breathing you need to rotate to the side, one goggle in the water, ear to your arm and only get the chin up, breathing to the side and behind, not looking up/at the sky the moment your head is too upturned, your legs sink whatever your head does, your legs follow
@@FaresKsebati thanks! My main difficulty right now is when turning I’m either lifting my chin too much so my body sinks, or I can’t turn enough to get enough air to inhale. I also notice a lot of water goes into my mouth/nose while trying to breathe
