The opening of this movie has one of the best mid-zombie-apocalypse sequences in cinema. The bit where she's driving through the town and we're seeing hell break loose all around her is incredible. In a lot of zombie apocalypse movies, we don't really get to see the zombie apocalypse in process, it's often either after the apocalypse has hit full swing, or we're in a small, isolated area where we can see the horde, but not the effect it is having on civilization.

my best guess is the infected just dont target other living animals as the virus cant effect them very well but they still will eat dead things as there human side views it as "meat is meat and im starving" basically the two sides of the organism pulling in diffrent directions
Romero’s “night of the living dead” has the statement that a satellite from Venus that was giving off a strong unknown radiation was destroyed in atmosphere. So this radiation is 1 actual possible reason why everybody/most everybody who dies comes back. Sure “no more room in Hell” is also a possibility, but I like the radiation explanation.
It was never explicitly stated that was the reason, though it was strongly implied. Though the original script for day of the dead made it explicitly clear it was essentially a no more room in hell kind of situation and there was some kind of act of god kind of thing going on given how it ended in the script
@@ptyg_studios we get ended constantly by innumerable things without divine intervention. A lack of mass human death is clearly not part of a divine plan. Pretty sure Andy wasn't quite turned when he wrote with blood on the board, he just knew it was the quickest way to get the message across that he was done for
I loved Andy and was oddly affected by his death. I figured the same since he looked like he was in a hurry and _seemed_ alive at first. He didn't want them coming after him once he realized he was done for. He built up a sense of friendship with Ving Rhames and the rest of the crew and didn't want them to risk their lives since he figured they'd attempt a rushed and likely suicidal rescue attempt. Makes sense too since many gun stores (at least in my experience) tend to be run by veterans or former cops.

“Somebody attempts to carjack her” man why doesn’t anyone ever mention how well set up the mail man was from the beginning, seeing the person home boy fired attempt a carjacking always made me lol
I suggest using term "diplomacy applicator" instead of "firearm". Addtionally, with adjective describing type if needed (spicy for flamethrower, handheld for handgun etc.)
I like using slang terms. Gat is probably my personal favorite. I also like strap and piece. Stick is a good word for longarms like rifles and shotguns, particularly with wood body firearms. Blaat (spelled with one or two As) Refers to a fully automatic, or potentially burst fire firearm of an especially rapid fire rate, typically of a smaller size, usually under the classification of a machine pistol or submachinegun. Iron can be used but this typically refers to a larger "cowboy gat" such a magnum revolver or lever action (i fucking adore lever actions). Irons are extremely reliable and it should be noted that it is said to be quite difficult to confront a trained individual such as an Arizona ranger when he is armed with an iron of significant enough size.
Pretty sure these Zombies are dead. Lack of a pulse and the fact that quite a few were necrotic or appeared to be in later stages of decomposition. Many zombies had severe trauma and would bleed out / die within minutes, and wouldn't be able to chase someone down due to lack of blood. Given the amount of zombies the survivors encountered during their escape, after surviving in the mall for what is presumably months, would also indicate that the dead are being reanimated since most zombies probably would have succumbed to dehydration, infection, starvation, exhaustion, exposure If they were still living. This would significantly mitigate any sort of hoard action as many would die before any hoard could develop. Also the severed head at the end, clearly animate and functioning without a body in the cooler after being at sea for quite a while (at the minimum at least 3 or 4 days) is probably the biggest tip off that these things are dead. Some other process is animating these corpses. Don't think bed rest and antibiotics would have fixed this. Interesting video tho. Love your work.
I completely agree. Which is why I do not think this is the work of a virus, at least not one operating by the known laws of Earth. To accomplish a "Zombie Plague" such as this, the central nervous system would need to be preserved(Running alone takes a lot of coordination, let alone working object with hands), along with the muscular functionality, ocular functions, and hearing while the non essential body parts begin to decay. Not sure if the infected can smell or not, but presumably they can as a means of distinguishing an infected from a non infected. For this to happen the virus would need to completely alter the functions of a human body to no longer require nutrition, oxygen, or water. The need to 'feed' is simply triggering correct mental function and causing the zombie spread whatever sort of pathogen this is. Basically the very most primal parts of the human brain. This would convert the human into something not human. Dead would not be a good description. It would be an entirely new life form.
As an aspiring medical student, I love your videos and find myself grinning whenever I hear terms or processes that I'm already familiar with. It's these moments of "This guy really knows his shit" that make this channel great.

It's not just content creators like this guy. They are ghost banning comments for using specific words or discussing specific topics. Doesn't even have to be swearing or bullying, just a civil conversation can get deleted by whatever algorithm this shit show of a site uses. I have had comments ghost banned just for mentioning Nazi when discussing Wolfenstein, it is ridiculous. And UA-cam will not even release a list of terms telling you what will get your comment removed so you can at least try to avoid this, you gotta guess.
A few issues with your theories. First, the little girl at the beginning, as far as we know, could have been attacked by her infected parents, ran to Anna's house as they were close friends, once inside the front door, she could have succumbed to her wounds and once she rose again, wandered the house until finding the two in bed asleep. There is no indication that she walked over and attacked out of memory. Second, the zombies not wanting to attack the dog, could very well have been because of the virus. The virus may not be transferable to anything other than humans, and since the purpose of a virus is to spread, it would attack the only things it can spread to, which would be humans in this case. Finally, as already mentioned in other comments, there is far too much to go against the theory that these zeds are alive. Now, I know all to well that the traditional zombie is impossible, but, as was already pointed out, the cooler scene at the final part of the film shows that the zeds can clearly survive, so long as the brain remains intact and undamaged. Great movie though, wish they would have made a modern sequel.
Another issue is the extras on this DVD pertaining to the news broadcast. The doctor says explicitly and ok live television that he has removed half the digestive tract and heart from a victim, and they are still moving and dangerous
The opening of this movie is one of my favorites in a zombie movie. I love seeing the initial chaos of a zombie outbreak, wish more games and movies focused on this part of a zombie apocalypse.
According to James Gunn himself, the virus in this movie was always meant to be supernatural, like a vampire bite, however, it is very clear that at some point during production they decided to make it something viral. Hence the big deal and focus on Kenneth’s arm when he cut himself in the fountain where the Ben Cozine brawl happened. I always liked the idea of the zombies being a sort of judgment day allegory. We fucked up bad and now we’re being punished by our own actions.
Im pretty sure James Gunn( who worked on the screen play) said that the zombie outbreak is supernatural. Also the bonus dvd material state that the zombies are dead.
@allen thompson They're slow in Resident Evil because they are legit honest to god dead bodies going through rigor mortis while being hijacked by the virus and not just sick people. It's fitting actually, both viruses and zombies behave like they are alive but they aren't and they attack living things to "reproduce".
Roanoke, I want to point out that your theory regarding the “living” status of this movie’s zombies is sadly incorrect. At the end, during the credits, you can clearly see a severed head still functioning and moving in the boat’s freezer. Your video includes it at 7:41. Love your videos, otherwise, man. Keep it up!
Well, so long as blood is flowing through the brain and delivering nutrients, it's theoretically possible to keep a severed head alive. Perhaps the jugular and carotid coagulated and kept the brain alive for a few more hours? We know majority of the brain is shut down, so that might extend the alive time by reducing the workload.

The infection probably causes them through some sensory organ to be able to tell the difference between infected and uninfected individuals. Or at least viable vectors for infection. It's commonly seen in fungal infections I think, like Cordyceps.
I have never seen any zombie stuff where they explain why they dont attack each other. Like in the 28 Days Later movies for example the infected are supposed to be filled with rage that they cant control so why dont they attack the other infected?
@@crypto1223 Still doesn't solve the aggression factor. They are, after all, competing for the food. But, fair point about it being rotten... if they were corpses though, but this theory states they are alive.
@@adventurethroughtime Right but this isn't a virus takeover thing like cordyceps, the theory he's presenting is that it's a rampant case of unchecked aggression and hunger, so they're not trying to infect others, as they do keep biting afterwards to try and eat it would seem.

Not even just that. They decompose through the course of the movie, and at the end they find a severed head that's still trying to bite them during the end credits, which he included a clip of. Twice.
I absolutely loved Dawn of the Dead and its comedy brother Shaun of the Dead. So Roanoke, any thoughts on doing the Mercer Virus (and its predecessor from the first game) and associated creatures, horrors and wonders? I know Prototype is a relatively unloved specimen, but i loved those games, flawed as they were, and i think the Mercer Virus would provide some interesting content, especially with the White Light, Evolved and such. Too bad Prototype 2 was sabotaged by publishers from the start, it had such a fantastic vision and would have made a stellar series, but who cares when Call of Duty is there to exploit for money right?
No. "Boom Stick" works great for shotguns. I do not know what the PC crowd calls handguns. Most likely something incredibly childish seeing as all of the PC crowd have a childish mentality.

Do "Calvin" from Life (2017) or the hominids from The Descent. For the latter, you could into detail about human evolution, since the hominids are assumed to be humans that took a different evolutionary path.
I like to think the infected don't target animals cause that memory of pets were friends and hold no aggressive actions towards a dog or cat or bird yet they see a human and that flares up the memory of people pissing them off one way or another
Till this day I believe Nicole has some serious balls to even think about going out there alone for the dog, like just the thought of getting in the truck which was outside near the abundance of infected, and to stop the car get out of it in plain street while rabid infected are sprinting at you is just terrifying.
This is by far my favorite zombie movie of all time simply because of the nature of the zombies. This is one of very few scenarios where I could see a legit Armageddon for humanity happening because the ONLY way to kill them is to take out the brain. That is a very difficult target to hit in a normal confrontation and would be almost impossible with the erratic and quick movements the zombies exhibit in the film. Not even an army of Tier 1 operators could handle a swarm like that. At least in most other movies the zombies are "alive" and are susceptible to normal trauma, bombs, starvation, etc so you can lay into them with a machine gun and take them down. Try that with DOTD2004 zombies and you'll just run out of ammo and die. Also, it is fucking hilarious to watch Phil Dumphy be an asshole to everyone.
That’s why this movie is really scary, the zombies are vicious and fast, they run to sound in packs. A shot made across a city would bring hundreds and thousands of them in minutes.
It’s crazy how shitty things can get really fast in this world, just wish they spent a little more time outside of the mall to make the movie feel a little more fulfilling.
@@Reupload-Kanal-Von-Lukas-Heil In the extra features of the DVD, the gunshop owner explains why that is a bad idea. It doesn't kill them fast enough. Instead of a hoard of zombies, you have a hoard of zombies that are on fire, making things much worse. The fire doesn't even always kill them.
4:20 that woman dying then reanimating will FOREVER be the scariest part of this movie to me 😱😱😱😱 the way she just rose up in that bed and started running like a freaking olympian 😱😱😱😱
8:43 your theory dies here, they're dead by the very factor that no virus can cause anyone to move around without blood flow. so even if they were "walking dead" they wouldn't actually move either. There's no real logic behind this movie, they're just supernatural walking dead and that's all there is to them.
All these talk of blood and human organs make my hands sweaty and knees weak. Haha this is why I can’t be a doctor of any sort. This movie is definitely showing the supernatural of zombie horror. When trying to find a theoretical explanation for reanimating deceased bodies, it’s impossible to explain how the virus in the movie can resuscitate a person when all internal organs have failed and most importantly the circulation of blood and other important chemicals that keeps the complex system of the human body functioning. The decapitated head has me skeptical, but, in regards to the movie, it was funny and gives a good little jump scare. Still, I liked this video valiant effort in trying to explain some of the biology of the human and the nature of viruses.
This virus is impossible and so despite the more "science fiction" bent of the film I think the "supernatural" is far more a satisfying explanation. Even if the husband at the start was bit on the carotid and thus infecting the brain relatively instantly, the virus' rate of replication still violates thermodynamic laws in how fast it replicates. Like, if matter replicated like that then the host would be a literal nuclear explosion in seconds. Or the virus would literally boil the host alive, or they'd be reduced to goo in seconds a.l.a. the Wicked Witch of the West meeting water. Another thing - if a bite to a neck vessel = instant zombification, then why not a scratch to the little toe? The time differential is illogical. I mean, the virus is still incubating at light speed so ultimately who cares where you're bit? It's over in seconds no matter where on you the virus is introduced. I prefer the interpretation that the whole world is already infected with latent virus but those who are bitten close to vitals die of the immediate injury and reanimate. Even after reanimation it'd be unique and cool to interpret these zombies as "alive" and they _were_ clinically dead for a few minutes, but then again that living head in the chiller box on the island belies that interpretation. Nope. To the tune of "Nice Video", "Cool zombie film, explanation sucks".
@tim mellow - Well, most zombie movie "diseases" portray a dramatic deceleration of decomposition 'cos the virus thwarts bacterial processes - I'm OK with that kinda sci-fi bent. Another thing that always bothered me about _DOTD'04_ was the apparent speed is the outbreak. I think the film earnestly depicts this as a fluid-bite disease and the living are uninflected and wouldn't reanimate if dying "naturally". I'm guessing the huge success of _28 Days Later_ really impacted _DOTD'04_ in that way, even to the point of having their zombies running. Why then is this disease global after 24 hours? It'd have to be there were _multiple_ "patient zeros" in myriad locations around be world and even then..? To infect the entirety of the USA in under 12 hours? You'd need a "patient zero" on every block. How the hell did this spread so universally in such little time? I know it's "cool" to see on screen but to me it makes zero sense. Even _28_ had throwaway dialogue to the effect that the "rage virus" took weeks to spread across the U.K. I do like the idea that these zombies have no mental capacity for object permanence but then why would they "remember" where important places in their former lives were? It sucks but I really think this "disease" bellies any attempt to rationalize it so fine. It's some blood/waterborne "magic" (though I remember being confused by the scene of the water fountain when the dude washed the zombie's blood off his hands into the water).
It was explained by James Gunn and Snyder as being supernatural, they compare them to werewolves or vampires, they could possibly even be demonic sorta like the savageland zombies.
I'd guess the carotid and jugular coagulated, keeping blood in the brain, allowing it to function with its reduced workload. The head is probably going to die within hours, but for now, it retains minimal muscle control.
roman noodles they are reanimated, as long as the brain is intact, they will keep moving. This movie is old folks, why is there debate about the zombies in this movie? It’s made very clear that they are dead, but reanimated
I’d like to assume that the survivors didn’t die at the end of the film and that even though there was an abundance of zombies they might have managed to dispatch them quick enough perhaps
To be fair, the original Dawn of the Dead never officially stated that the source of the outbreak was supernatural in origin, that was just Peter’s point of view.
I used to watch your videos and wonder if the creators of the games/movies actually had this much thought in their zombies/monsters since you were able to describe it so logically that I figured they had to have thought the same thing. I guess this video kinda proves it's just scientific/medical theory based on the source material. If I recall, I think the zombies in the movie are actually the dead come back to life...indicated by the ones who have severe damage and don't bleed to death and still function. One is even just a head in a cooler with some random guts and it's still functional. They don't bleed out and they only reanimate after dying. And yes I know once we get to the supernatural, science kinda goes out the window so this channel can't really jump too much into that because the whole thing is scientific explanation of zombies and monsters. What you said about the last breath kicking off the change over but they're actually alive, that's probably the coolest explanation ever given and it would be cool to see that in a movie. People assume the dead have come back but they didn't really "die" they just sort of stopped breathing for a minute and kickstarted again, making it look like they came back from the dead. Also in the movie the zombies seemed to respond to movement, just not animals. They only had interest when the dog was being lowered because it was movement they could see, but they weren't interested in the dog. I think they only noticed the doggie door because it was sudden movement and the guy couldn't close it. Anyways, love your vids. The concept of your vids is extremely unique and fascinating and an amazing way to learn some biology and science will enjoying zombie talk. Please never stop making videos. The world needs you
Homeboy really pushed the position that they're actually alive, while showing a clip of an animated zombie head that's been in a cooler for who knows how long.
That part specifically told me that the supernatural bite or virus affects people differently, some are smarter than others or have more awareness in a way.. that’s why that zombie noticed the door open. Idk I’m just talking… also why did they stop at the bottom of the stairs when they chased them… it’s like they knew they had them.
One story I've read it has an interesting take on a zombie virus. It's like the mutated cordyceps from Last of Us but much more brutal. One such was told from an infected human, over time it was explained in detail how the virus was taking over his body. Fully conscious, until the involuntary muscle spasms come on, he felt like his body was moving on its own with his muscles stiff dry that he can only move his fingertips as he walk in an involuntary and erratic motor motion, aka the zombie walk. Next was the intense acidic reaction from his metabolism causing him to feel such a painful hunger that he felt like the stomach acid was eating his insides. Then as he moved on, he saw the rest of the infected all moving in the same manner as his, take note the infected was STILL FULLY CONSCIOUS. Then at a distance when he saw survivors he tried to call for help, but the virus has swollen his voice box and tongue that the only sound he can make were growls and gurgles. He tried to stop but his limbs won't listen, until he met his end at the end of a 12 gauge.

Yeah, the movie makes it pretty clear that the infected are meant to be dead.
I think the zombies act on their instincts
Agreed these are dead people and not just live infected humans suffering from unprecedented selective brain swelling.
Though it also suggests along with other scenes in the movie that the brain is an important part of the reanimation

The problem with this theory is why, if the zombies are being driven by aggression and hunger, not attacking each other?
Noah Engelmann Some remnant of the human’s ability to recognize rotten looking food as bad and unsafe to eat?

Yes that’s very wierd
In this film you can also kill zombies by burning them but that's of course also not very easy
@@hectorrosales9752 with the way the zombies are it isn’t surprising. It’s set in 2004

Should not even be able to run either.
Ayyyy a virus video. Goes without saying that it's very topical.
I'm starting to feel dead being stuck at home for days bow.
It has to be supernatural otherwise the zombies should just decompose & collapse after a couple weeks
If it takes a headshot to put them down permanently. Then a bite closer to the head would get them turned quicker in that sense…
Maybe how close to the brain the wound is faster the change
It was explained by James Gunn and Snyder as being supernatural, they compare them to werewolves or vampires, they could possibly even be demonic sorta like the savageland zombies.

To be fair, the original Dawn of the Dead never officially stated that the source of the outbreak was supernatural in origin, that was just Peter’s point of view.
Main Character: I'm gonna pretend I didn't see that
I used to watch your videos and wonder if the creators of the games/movies actually had this much thought in their zombies/monsters since you were able to describe it so logically that I figured they had to have thought the same thing.
Where the script failed: zombies completely ignoring the dog, then suddenly becoming interested when the dog entered through the trap door.
What's the name of that Zombie story?
I need to know the name
@@Preus-by8ru there’s a book called “ZomoSapienS: The Apocalypse from the Zombies Point of View”, but I’m not sure if that’s the one.
@@Preus-by8ru there’s also a book called, “Het Madden, A Zombie Perspective: Book One: WRATH 2012”. There’s also a movie called, “Colin” (Mark Price UK 2008) that’s from the perspective of an infected person. I also suggest, “Zombies: A Record of the Year of Infection”. It’s a 2009 horror illustrated novel by Don Roff. The book is written in journal-style- a doctor writes his observations of the infected and writes his explanation for the virus and his experiences.
@@shoosh222 Thanx

I just realized what gun stores should be called “POP-POP Shops”.
Nice touch with the L4D2 music.
It's funny to think when you made this I got so used to hearing force multipliers. I forgot you called them guns for a whiles now! 🤣
You should totally do an episode on the TV show "The Strain"
Ezra K I think "Black Summer" from netflix would be an interesting one too
@@WickedPhase I haven't watched that yet but I watched a bunch of znation so if he could explain how a baby zombie moves that fast that'd be great
I haven't seen the movie in at least a decade, and my recollection was that the girl at the start was her daughter. Evidently not. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Fun Fact: The Unknown Woman was actually a stunt man in makeup because they could not find a stuntwoman to do the stunt.
I love the use of the Left For Dead song playing in the back 🤣 love the video
