Welcome to my city! Thank you for doing this. I love getting outsiders' perspectives. You are right that the Empire State Trail goes to the Canadian border. And actually, it starts at the southern tip of Manhattan, not in Van Cortlandt Park where you picked it up. The Empire State Trail is T-shaped, and you can take it from Albany (in the middle of the north-south span) and take it very far west to Buffalo.

For 40+ years White Plains, NY closes a 13 mile loop of the Bronx River parkway all summer to recreation every Sunday from 10am -2pm. Unfortunately this year they chose to suspend it during July and august. Will continue Sept. October.

All cities should be closed to cars especially the city centres. It’s so dumb that most of the people living in dense cities dont own cars but still they are built and designed with mainly cars in mind and especially in the us the whole country is made just for cars, not humans (or other species). Neatherlands etc who have great bike infra had to fight for it (for example by taking over the streets and laying there with their bikes) and we will have to fight also.

If you want graduated changes like with the very centers of the cities for the bikes versus cars, that's possible, even like what I've seen where they just have certain streets otherwise car prohibited, in Central Europe, probably for the people who don't live there, but you can never realistically expect cities to be "closed to cars". They don't even do that in Holland! That being said, all of the business with one day a week in the summer or whenever, and no cars on certain streets or certain areas, that's just dandy and probably would have a positive effect on the popularity of cycling. Also in Germany especially there's always been a very heavy men's interest in fast cars, sports cars, as much as sausage, strudel, beer, and dueling, and that's engrained in the culture as much as bikes are engrained in Holland or Demark. So unless the Dutch invade and occupy and de-Nazify in that sense, it's not going to be a bike revolution there.

I think this NYC vlog is my favorite set of videos you've ever done... And that is saying something!!!!! P.S. I'm not sure about wearing dark cycling kit in NYC...especially on 35+ degree days. The lane closures for bikes is really great and gets a lot of people out that usually would not tempt long cycling rides. I live in Ottawa (Canada) and we’ve had Sunday closures of certain promenades for about 10 years and more, but since a bit before COVID they’ve been expanded to the full weekend from 8 to 5 and the number of accessible roads has grown over time as well. You can do about 40km on the road without cars. Additionally, since Covid, our local box hill equivalent (Gatineau park) has now a time schedule limiting car traffic almost every day, with only a city shuttle for walkers being allowed. It’s really a great experience, especially for kids, because families don’t have to worry about safety as much and they can just enjoy the ride.

    • @Nahhnope

My inlaws live in Gatineau and visiting now is even better with the roads in the park closed to cars. Hopefully this is permanent!

A woman rider was hit by a car in Gatineau Park, turning in front of her, up near Chelsea last week, at around 7 pm. I haven't heard how she is now. But I still intend to make it over the Champlain Bridge to Gatineau Park this summer.

@@richardharris8538 that’s sad to hear. It seems the driving in the city has been getting worst since COVID started. I’m in the East-end, Ogilvy and Montreal rd are always dicy even with the bike lane white lines.

@@nvspace126 I'm in the west-end. Early on in the pandemic I was cycling on Huntmar and Old Second Line in the South March Highlands. One weekend I had several cars overtake me with less than the 1.5 m they're supposed to, because of oncoming traffic. It was pretty scary. The amount of traffic out there is just a few vehicles that come through the traffic lights on March Road, so they could easily have waited a second or two. I think it was young rich guys from the mansions out there. I find that most drivers in the Ottawa area are very considerate. Anyway, now I stick to the bike paths, but I do want to get out to Gatineau Park. That'll be a longer ride than what I usually do, 44km. If I only go as far as Pink Lake, that'll still be well over 60 km.

Great fun guys, going north from Van Cortlandt is a really fun way to ride out of the city !
Try some night time rides for less cars as well ! So fun.
The start of the Empire State trail south county/ north county/ south put trail - you can go all the way to Albany and Buffalo NY beyond. Its pretty amazing I grew up about 40 miles north on that trail from Van Cortlandt. (near Lake Glenida, Carmel).
If you ever go up to Terrytown again - going over the new Tappan Zee Bridge -
which would take you back to 9w. Piermont or the Filling station OR
or south down the Old Croton Aqueduct trail - for a bit of gravel fun.

Y’all came for one of the hottest summers I’ve ever seen here. It’s normally not this brutal so I hope your both staying safe.
Recommend checking out Coney Island. You could pop onto Bedford, and just head south for about 8 miles. Bedford is crazy in north Brooklyn but extremely chill easy riding south of prospect park. Go till you hit emmons ave and the bay. Swing right, and turn left when you see land again and head south till you hit the boardwalk. Find some katchipouri at a Georgian place, or go knot Coney Island for hot dogs.
You can come back north along ocean parkway to see the oldest bike lane in the US. It’s quite pretty but the road surface is quite shit until you get north of ave U. You can take that nearly to prospect park. Or you could go along emmonds and it connects two different paths, one to the east will take you along the ocean on mixed use trails to more beaches, and the other will take you all around Brooklyn and eventually back to Williamsburg.
Super fun watching this series and seeing all the places I ride to weather ugh to get to work or drop my my kids

Quoting auto fatalities to somehow justify reckless behavior by bicylists is part and parcel of the sense of moral superiority they evince. Pedestrians are in peril from BOTH.
I am fine with bicyclists and cars sharing the roads, but all rules of time and space apply to both. Try the bridge to bridge loop if you have time. North on the trailway, cross the Mario Cuomo bridge (mariomcuomobridge.ny.gov/visit-visitor-info), south on 9W (Jersey) and cross the GWB back into northern Manhattan. The rest you have done before. Thanks for the videos.
