China metallurgy. It can be great or it can really suck. That one must've cracked during the heat treatment. I had a Made in England Taylor's Eyewitness pruning knife to do the same thing and sent it back for a replacement. The spring in it was long and narrow, not all that strong. The thinnest part is where it broke, right next to a pin.

I have two of those, the first one the shield was missing or I thought it was. They sent me a new one. I found the shield for the first one a week later, it had fallen out of the box when I opened it. The shield fell out of the newer one too. I cleaned them up and gorilla glued them back in. So now I have two of them and they are both great. I really like the bone covers and the match strike pulls.
