    I got super lucky and scored a large form in a sea of small form from local grocery store here in New Orleans. I figured it out after a frost last winter when I lost almost all the leaves on a 4 vine pot. I cut it all back and now I have 8 vines!
    It is very true that they grow and size up much quicker than small form. I also have a small form cutting from my first ever monstera that got dry rot two summers ago when I was out of town. So I’ve watched them grow simultaneously and you can ABSOLUTELY tell. The leaves sized up significantly after only three leaves. ❤
    I need to find a sport now!!

    I thought I wanted a large form until mine grew--LARGE. My Thai Constellation is a space bully. I also made the mistake of using a plastic D-shaped pole on it and it bent the pole. And moving it to the shower for the weekly spray down becomes quite a challenge. But it is a beaute!

    • @sandy_carpetsthesecond5013
      @sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 2 місяці тому

      Wait, so, how do you deal with bent D-shaped poles? Do you just not put it on the poles anymore? Or have you found a way to deal with it? Cuz I was thinking about buying one and putting one on an extra-sturdy moss pole but I'm kinda worried about how big the leaves get.

    • @gaddaitherage8204
      @gaddaitherage8204 2 місяці тому +2

      @@sandy_carpetsthesecond5013 I haven’t dealt with it yet but most likely I’ll get a garden stake or two and find ways to strap it to the pole to reinforce it.
      As for the type of pole I recommend using, I think the best for this situation is doing a DIY pole with chicken wire mesh, like the one Sydney plant guy uses. And then use a piece of plastic to conceal the back half so that it doesn’t dry so quick, and also direct the aerial roots down the pole.
      Hope this makes sense!

    Thanks for the info! I'm in the states, and for the longest time I didn't even know about small form and large form. The plants here are not generally labeled one way or another. I have found this to be true in big box stores as well as specialty shops, and even a lot of websites.. I have no clue what my monstera is. I will have to wait until it grows a little more. But knowing the difference and the care differences is valuable info. Thanks!

    Great video for a beginner like myself. Thanks for warning me that I may lose 1/2 of my east & south facing kitchen nook to the monsters. The deep Craftsman style eaves make the lighting there perfect for plants and painting. Added bonus, the house to the east is white, so as the sun sets, it reflects off that house & the nook fills with golden light.

    If the leaf sheeth is smaller than half of the leaf-stem = large form… bigger than half = small form. This method never fails

      That's an interesting one! Heard it not so long ago in another youtuber's vid. Also heard that if the petiole sheeth gets these little spikes (kind of like coarse-grained sandpaper) it's large form.

    If you're looking for that "jungle" vibe then a basic small form is the thing.
    I have 2 sibling ones (ie separated early on from the same pot), sat next to each other, both in leca on coir moss poles. They are absolutely LOVING life! Regularly producing 18" leaves with average 4-6 holes (and yes, ruffles)
    The downside is that in the right light they do grow very tall, very quickly. They're my twin bois and my pride and joy! 😁💚

      @@KayleeEllenOfficial it’s definitely on my wishlist but I want one like yours that has green and mint. Most of the ones sold near me are all mint like a white monster. I do love half-moons but I prefer more well balanced variegation. Like what u said in your tour vid that I agree with is that being fully variegated like a white monster looks a bit sick or nutrient deficient.

    When she called Thai Constellation cheap in the U.S., I almost choked. LOL. I don't know about elsewhere, but where I live, in Tampa, FL, they are more expensive than Albos. I've been wanting a Thai, but have seen rooted potted plants with 3-5 leaves priced at approximately $350. Rooted cuttings with 1-3 leaves priced at approximately $225. And unrooted cuttings with 1-3 leaves priced at approximately $175.

Problem is in uk I cannot find a mature size so I know it’s definitely large form. My latest one was sold as large form but young plant . It’s more of a bush type that even baby leaves have splits and an occasional hole . Doesn’t look like the ikea type at all so I’m hoping it is the big one as I’m running out of space 😂

I’d like the Thai constellation and the large form or something. I tried buying one large form and it turned out to be a regular one. Hard to find the real kind.

    What do you think of the petiole vs. sheath theory? Apparently, the large form sheath usually finishes with a prominent slightly sticking out point, less than halfway along the petiole and on the small form the sheath is more than halfway along the petiole with no little sticky out point at the end ? Again you need them to be more than juvinile I guess somewhat.

    Is thai constellation creme brulee real? And what about the many names like platinum and white snow? Or are they all just lucky, random, highly variegated versions of the thai constellation?
    I feel like I see thai constellation monstera change their type of variegation all the time.
    Edit: I personally own a small form albo, two thai constellation monsteras and a standard boring one (don't tell him I said that).

    I have a very mature monstera cutting (plant is over 20 years old!) and I thought it was small form, but it has some qualities that would suggest she's rather big form in the end. She's not really vining, leaves are not as big as in a big form and didn't yet get any secondary fenestrations, but I guess they might be bigger than small form's? I'd use some expert to tell me what is she really 😅 it's like she's half and half!
