Wuthering Heights is a novel by Emily Brontë, written between October 1845 and June 1846, and published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. It was her first and only published novel: she died aged 30 the following year. The decision to publish came after the success of her sister Charlotte's novel, Jane Eyre. After Emily's death, Charlotte edited the manuscript of Wuthering Heights, and arranged for the edited version to be published as a posthumous second edition in 1850.
Wuthering Heights is the eponymous farmhouse on the Yorkshire moors where the story unfolds. The book's core theme is the destructive effect that jealousy and vengefulness have, both on the jealous or vengeful individuals and on their communities.
Although Wuthering Heights is now widely regarded as a classic of English literature, it received mixed reviews when first published, and was considered controversial because its depiction of mental and physical cruelty was so unusually stark. In the second half of the 19th century, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was considered the best of the Brontë sisters' works, but later critics argued that Wuthering Heights was superior. Wuthering Heights has inspired adaptations, including film, radio and television dramatisations, a musical by Bernard J. Taylor, a ballet, operas (by Bernard Herrmann, Carlisle Floyd, and Frédéric Chaslin), a role-playing game, and a 1978 song by Kate Bush. (summary adapted from wiki)

Big thanks to the good folks at Librivox for this!! I'm an occasional narrator over there myself and know how much time and effort is put into sharing these projects with the public. I really appreciate it. :) I have been looking to read this book...now I can LISTEN to it! Wonderful!
thank you all
As a 15yo non native english speaker trying to read classics, this was a great help. Victorian english is hard but I found the book much more accessible with this dramatic reading alongside reading the book myself! Thank you

This is my favourite book of all time, and being able to listen to it is something I'm really grateful for! Thanks to everyone who took the time to contribute to this, I recommend this particular audiobook to anyone wanting to listen to Wuthering Heights!
Mine too, I take every chance I can to read it. I wish I could find an original print or something, this sh*t is fierce
You need to read more than one book. 😂
This book is UNHINGED
Also the narration is beyond amazing
I really liked the reading, the different volunteers all are chosen to fit the characters - as this is one of my one of my favourite books i love hearing it come to life like this.
I understand that people unfamiliar with the material would not appreciate how fittingly they are chosen, being confused over Josephs grumbling and mumbling, about the rough voice of Heathcliff and so on...but it fits them perfectly, these aren't smooth characters, just as the book is no smooth and relaxed read.
THANK YOU so much. I'm trying to get some reading done for class and also be productive at the same time. I'm listening to this while doing chores and I'll probably finish the book a few days ahead of schedule now. Yesterday I "read" over 150 pages!

If I remember correctly, Joseph's dialect was even harder to READ, lol!
I'm reading this book for the first time. I'm only three chapters in and going what on earth is he saying
Indeed a lovely Chap
It was extremely rough lol. I still love that it was included, I wouldn’t change it.

The best way to describe this book, is that its confusion makes it entertaining, at least from my perspective.
Most of the time I have to reread parts because of how confusing this book is
Where's the confusion?
literally cannot understand any of it
its such a hard read.. and i hate audio books aswell
but have to admit this has actually helped me ...
Last summer I tried to read the book, but I had struggle cause english isn't my first language and I never actually read victorian english, so this is a great help. Listening to this while reading is helping in a lot of the problems I had and I can finally understand what'S happening and who is saying what. Thanks!

Miss Emily Jane was nearly 20 years of age when Victoria became Queen. Emily Jane became 20 years of age whilst Charles Dicken's was scribbling away writing Oliver Twist. Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 about ten years in to the Victorian era. So some may say it was Victorian language or litreture.
wtf is joseph saying the whole book
Biblical nonsense
*mumble growl snarl*
Biblical parables. There are quite a few prints of Wuthering Heights that have annotated translations of what Joseph is saying.
Katherine Squires none of yor fuckig business
He is hard to understand because of his thick Yorkshie dialect.
this helped me understand joseph’s accent 😭🙏 i couldn’t understand anything he was saying in the book.
Same, I had tiny strokes while reading his parts.
I have been trying to get into classic literature. I read The Picture Of Dorian Gray and loved it, got this from the library and could not pay attention. I thought an audio book would help but it hasn’t. Still appreciate you making this book accessible to more people
I agree! I love classic literature. Jane Eyre is my favourite book. But I cannot get into this!
Really? I love classic literature but I usually have a hard time feeling as though I’m not reading out of obligation, but Wuthering Heights is one of the only few that I actually enjoyed and would read over and over again leisurely.
The Picture of Dorian Gray is so interesting and a bit unsettling!
I really like the Catherine voice!
I don't see what the problem is with the accents, as commented on by a few here. I understood every word spoken. Thanks for the upload.
Me either. I love the different readers in this excellent audio book--really gives the characters their own unique personalities. And the more one listens, the more one understands all. I particularly like Joseph's voice. He wouldn't be half so interesting if he spoke like everyone else. I always chuckle, when he says, "What are ye for."
to people who say Joseph is impossible to understand: you're right, but honestly he's just as incomprehensible in text, so I'd say the person voicing him did a great job
12 hrs later...I’m freakin done!!!
Perhaps I should add my comment in brief English, too: this is one of the greatest, most fascinating, and ingenious novels I ever read: an intrigating story, written by a Victorian-time lady (beeing one of four sisters who then had to publish under male pseudonyms), and of the deepest psycological insight. For continental readers it reveals quite a lot of the (as worthy as complicated) British character. Advice: see one of the movies from the 70ties if the first three chapters of the book seem too complicated at the first glance.

Nelly is the only one to see and recognize the injustices that others face and also impose. And she even suffers her own injustices but never allows them to get past her protective barrier. It baffles me that everyone just continues the cycle of abuse… even “the new neighbor” has an unfeeling nature about him.
I loved listening to that story as well as reading it. Both Wuthering Heights and Gone with the wind which I just finished reading in the year 2020 for me was the best romance I ever tead. I must confess that in the beginning I was a bit confused.I couldn't understand the plot but now I do and I fell in love with them. Keep up the good job! You rock!

I like the multiple readers, I just wish the editing was a bit smoother.

It was great to listen this though I have read the book yet I found it fantastic.
One only has to alter the characters a tiny bit in ones head, and this is EASILY a dark fantasy romance novel - may as well be canon, the amount of times the devil is mentioned. This is one fine piece of monsterfucker literature if I may say so myself, and I do because I can.

Joseph's lines might just as well be BLANKS, you can't understand a single' word he says. We know he is supposed to be rough tongued, but what a waste of a recording if you can't actually comprehend his contribution. It would have been better to listen to bleeps in those places with the knowledge that a suitable reader could not be found. The book is excellent for those who declare it boring. One of the best books ever written. I have read it a many many times.
What a disagreeable voice that of Joseph. I suppose it goes with the character, but dear God! It made me sometimes fearful, sometimes disgusted, sometimes just annoyed.

Attention! This comment contents spoilers. Wuthering Heights is one of the most impressive love books. The book reveals the bond between love and hate. We can see two strong emotions conversion to each other. And lots of revenge...
The chronological order of events is straight. So you don't slog to understand what time did it happen. İt's about that; someone who crush because of social class difference and his revenge.
When you read it, you can see hate is more stronger than love. On the other hand, the basis of hate is based on love. A vicious circle... An amazing book by Emilie Brontë

I applaud all the voice actors that volunteered their time for this. Many of them were good, but they should have found a different guy to read for Heathcliff. His delivery was so monotone and didn't match the passion of what was being said on the page. I'm not expecting great acting from a volunteer performer, but this was just too flat for such an important character in the book.

Some terrific prose
I have to say, the voice actor they chose for Heathcliff was sort of miscast. He was alright in parts, but overall, a more intense voice would have been better.
The mixture of English and American accents bothers me significantly, I'm sorry :(
Do you mean U.S. or Canadian accents? America covers a pretty vast continent...
WHAT! I hate english accent in audible because I cant understand shit half the time! I think the american accent is better for books in all scenario.
Dana Joyner they said America, not North America. America refers to the united states
I think they had Heathcliff as non-English because he isn't from them. He was adopted pretty much, so he shouldn't sound familiar to verbally decipher that he is "foreign".
Also, it's not American, he is Canadian. The dialect is vastly different.
