It tells the story of a consuming, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how their unresolved passion begins to destroy them and those around them.

Now considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights initially met mixed reviews from critics when it first appeared -- many were horrified by the stark depictions of mental and physical cruelty. Though Charlotte Brontë's 'Jane Eyre' was originally considered the best of the Brontë sisters' works, many subsequent critics have in favor of the rich originality of Wuthering Heights as the best of their works.

Why do you have these passages marked?

Donna Bittner i would assume he put them there so when he came back he could click on the most recent time stamp and it takes him to where he left off

I am very picky when it comes to audiobooks, but this reading is just perfection. I have listened to it several times and I keep coming back. Thank you for posting this.
No matter how many times I either re-read Wuthering Heights, or listen to an audiobook version of the story, I remain in awe of Emily's command of the English language. But it is especially evident when you hear her words read ALOUD. They have this mesmerizing quality, with their beautiful rhythm, the perfect descriptions, the hauntingly evocative feeling that it produces. WH is a truly remarkable creation, and Emily was blessed with remarkable gifts. Ruth's reading of the novel is wonderful apart from a few minor quibbles.
Should this be read in Yorkshire dialect,
as Received Pronounciation was not yet
invented til 20th century?
@@tymanung6382 We could have that as a volentary option rather than a mandatory requirement. I also nothied that when the language spoken is Yorkshire dialect the narrator switches to it.
if you’re supposed to read this for a class/are reading it in your free time here are some things to do whilst listening :
1. tidy your room 🧼 - open a window, turn this up, and clean whatever is necessary:)
2. enjoy a bubble bath 🛀 !- grab a few candles, a water bottle, perhaps a bath bomb of some kind, lay back and enjoy listening.
3. go for a walk outside 🏔 - no matter the time of day enjoy a casual stroll outside and plug in headphones. who knows? maybe you’ll meet your soulmate! or u could always just enjoy nature haha
4. wash your face 🧽 - i definitely recommend this.
5. do some light yoga that doesn’t require much thought 💭
6. have a fire! - either a campfire or your very own enjoy 🔥
7. have some detox tea- good after a long day🫖
8. cut, clean, and paint your nails clear!! 🧼
9. listen to wuthering heights by kate bush haha 🎶
10. water your plants! 🌱
oh I love this 💛

I have read/ listened to this book at least once a year since I was 9 ( I’m 64 now) and am incredibly impressed by the narrator! She’s absolutely wonderful. Yes she does read a little slowly, but a great many find the accents difficult to understand, so the clear, pronunciation is very helpful. Thank you a million times!
as a side note which should have been mentioned in the description, the painting used here is 1892-1893 Lady Agnew by John Singer Sargent (National Galleries of Scotland - Edinburgh UK)
Haekathe thanks !! I lo it and I was wondering about it.

JeS very leter portret of mach jonger lady.....
Thanks a lot for this comment! I was looking through the comment section in hopes of finding the name of this painting!
Haekathe thank you I couldn’t find the painting
Most of the people commenting here seem to be unaware of the unforgettable, perfectly splendid classic film, Wuthering Heights, starring a young and devastatingly handsome Lawrence Olivier as the fiercest and handsomest Heathcliff one could imagine, Merle Oberon as Cathy and David Niven as Linton. Released in 1939, it's a black and white film and as wonderful today as it was then, thanks to marvelous performances and top production values, as they could only do in the golden age of Hollywood filmmaking. Never equaled.
Correction: Laurence Olivier.
One of the many novels I unfortunately never got around to reading. I usually have trouble concentrating on audio books but this version is holding my attention 100%. Excellent story and narration. Gothic, melodrama of the highest quality.

How does a woman who hasn't left Haworth for ten years come up with something so fantastically intelligent? That indicates she had wordly knowledge, but we all know she didn't really, not much.
She was never in love, but she comes up with this genius? Kudos, Emily x
May I disagree with your opinion. She trained as a teachure. Also went to finishing school abroad when she endevoured to learn french and German. Her tutor was so impressed with Emily she pursuaded her to stay on for another six months (Wiki June 2016). She grew up with sisters all writing literature or Poety. She also learnt to play piano. She also attended school from age six. Proving to be inappropriate she was then schooled by her father whose academic achiements included a University Scholaship and AB degree. (WikiJune2023: He had several apprenticeships (to a blacksmith, a linen draper, and a weaver) until he became a teacher in 1798. He moved to England in 1802, having won a scholarship[6] to study theology as a sizar at St John's College, Cambridge, first registered as "Branty" or "Brunty", then "Brontë", receiving his AB degree in 1806).
So who are all you and all those who know she had not wordly knowledge, not much.

This woman's voice is perfect! Her Yorkshire accent is spot on, and her rendition of Joseph is perfect! I've read WH almost yearly since I was 12 and I've obsessively gone over and over Joseph's parts, trying to imagine how his rough dialect might sound but never quite being able to get it right. I have FINALLY found his voice!
As a person from west Yorkshire I have to disagree, her accents arent very good at all
I think she's the only one tries to make old Joseph sound crude as he is. The movie disappointed me in that respect though I loved Ralph Finnes as Heathcliff
y'all complaining but I would've LOVED to read this book for English

I was actually reading the graphical novel while reading this, definitely loving the narration at this very moment. Though, I do not understand as to why she is labelled as 'boring'. It is purposely monotone for a reason, many accents can not be recognised, I believe this is a perfect tone.

One of the best if not the BEST novel written in English of ALL time.🥰😍🥰😍🇬🇧🇬🇧🥰😍🥰😍
THE best. Emily's extraordinary creation has never been surpassed imho. There are good books, great books, and then beyond this a category where such terms as masterpiece are sometimes used. But above this Wuthering Heights seems to stand alone, an utterly unique and hauntingly beautiful story, with probably the most perfect use of English in any written work in that language. Evocative, mystery filled, with so much depth of feeling and an otherworldly atmosphere throughout.I cannot even find the words to describe what it means to me. Emily had extraordinary gifts.
It was hard for me to read and understand this novel but when listening I get a better idea of it
Just heard first two chapters - I thought the book would be completely inaccessible but it is brilliant so far
Why is my Kinswoman Lady Agnew pictured here on the cover of this recording? She is from the Scottish lowlands and was actually a real person. This is her portrait done by the artist Singer Sargent and it is displayed in Scotland’s National Galerie last I had known.
Wuthering Heights is better than modern romantic novels filled with sex to compensate for the unrealistically ideal characters.
This novel was quite shocking in 1847, but Emily Bronte was rather sensible. I love her description of walking through the snow, or the weather. E.L. James could never write on such an intricate level.
Beautifully read. Thank you so much
Brilliantly read! Chapeau! Thank you!

Yes I like this reader very much. I enjoy her take on Josephs rude vernacular 😂 Thanks. Love the Brontes and this reader ❤
If you have issues comprehending there is an intermediate version of this that is also really good, and you can prep on spark notes.
This book asks is the eternal question between nature and nurture. Can a human being overcome a tragic, savage, tumultuous childhood?
Hard to believe this is Libravox: she does an excellent job narrating this book!

6:24 "...and there you see the distinction between our feelings. Had he been in my place, and I in his, though I hated him with a hatred that turned my life to gall, I never would have raised a hand against him. You may look incredulous, if you please! I never would have banished him from her society, as long as she desired his. The moment her regard ceased, I would have torn his heart out and drank his blood!
But till then, if you don't believe me, you don't know me - till then, I would have died by inches before I touched a single hair of his head!"
