Hey. I don't know if you read my comment under PotC: tCotBP, but I just wanted to tell I find this review format much more enjoyable that the previous one. You are just relaying your impressions as the film goes. It's great. Please keep it up.
I am hoping that when Avatar 2 is released, it will bring back 3d to home theaters. It's a long shot, but one can always hope
I am thinking 3D TV's are truly dead, but I do think that VR will be the thing that brings it back...
One fact I can tell you is that Avatar 2 will feature more versions of the film than any other movie ever made including low and high framerate, 2d, 3d, and 4d, and a few more. I do believe it will. I cannot wait
4K 3D?
At one point, I thought 3D was going to be the new Cinema standard. Ridley Scott was doing it, Ang Lee was doing it, Martin Scorsese was doing it, Baz Luhrmann was doing it, PIXAR was doing it, Luc Besson was doing it. I really enjoy movies in 3D.
@@zilun Don't say Luc Besson - we didn't get the 3d version of Valerian in the US. We're still recovering from that...
I wish 4K 3D Blu-ray discs existed.
I would build a huge collection. The closest thing to 4K 3D movies is simply watching a 3D disc on a 4K OLED TV (like the LG E6) which can upscale the image.
4K OLED + 3D = heaven especially for passive 3D because of the ultra low response time from OLED.
Or with INFITEC 3D system with two JVC projectors!

Great review, I really dig the more in- depth, play-by-play style review. And thanks for still supporting 3D blu-ray- we 3D enthusiasts are a dying breed this day in age, but are certainly a devoted bunch. Cant wait to watch my copy when it arrives.
I have a Benq 2050A and a 100” screen . Dune shows up at my house on Thursday. Over 300 3D movies not dead at my house! 3D failed because it was too complicated for the average consumer. Thanks for the 3D review.
IMO, a big factor in the failure of 3D as a home entertainment medium, is the sad reality that many people engage in multitasking, while casually watching movies. BUT, when a person is wearing the special glasses needed for 3D, as he watches a movie on a 3D TV, that really destroys the usual ease that he'd previously been accustomed to, of being able to quickly switch his attention from staring at his TV's screen, to suddenly catching glimpses of what's on his I-Pad or his smart phone. Because it's IMPOSSIBLE to even read a text message on a smartphone while wearing those dark 3D glasses. So those pesky glasses may have actually prevented the adoption of home 3D, by many Americans, as those dark glasses made multitasking so difficult by putting up a roadblock against quick attention shifting between different visual mediums. But of course, people who are serious about fully appreciating what a quality film or movie has to offer (like yours truly is), would never be multitasking as a movie is being shown, in the first place. The movie can always be paused, if doing something else is really necessary! And in addition to all this, I can never quite understand how some people today seem to actually enjoy watching movies & shows on relatively tiny smartphone screens. Plus, to me, watching well shot movies on the minuscule screens of cellphones, really disrespects the work of all those skilled folks whose combined efforts had brought forth the quality that's finally shown onscreen. Because so much of the intended look & detail of a polished movie production, simply can't be noticed on screens that are so tiny.
Honestly, to me, shrinking a movie down to the size of a cellphone screen, is very much like taking a photo of a painting that's hanging on the wall of a museum, & then reproducing that photo of the painting, by printing it on a matchbook's cover!

I've seen the 4k and the 3D disc, and I gotta say the 3D would be my preferred way to view it. However, I am using one of the 2016 LG OLEDs to view it and I've found that almost any 3D disc looks fantastic when displayed on those things

3d is still more immersive than 4k. I wish 3d would make a resurgence. Needs atmos tho.
3D for movies has faded away, majority of consumers don't like 3D. hence why all the tv manufacturers have dropped 3D from their televisions years ago.
The proper much more realistic 3D in the future will be real holographic tv's. 3 dimensional images from the screen without any glasses. Or the dizziness you get from the glasses.
@@RSrunner88 3d projectors are superior to both tv and VR headsets. Sorry but VR 3d is super niche on top of 3d being niche itself so that alone will not be enough to persuade people that are not into 3d already.
The limitation is the blu Ray as its storage is about 70 GB of data . Where as 3D is a very very data consuming format. An avg 10 min clip in full HD 3D will be about 12.5-15 GB depending on scenes, that exceeds the limitations of 70GB in blu rays. And also the 3D in blu Ray is compressed and hence it is not able to provide atoms audio format. I wish kaleidsecape could offer 3D format in Dolby atmos and dts X as it is not Restrained by blu rays ….. hope it happens
@@adityaverat7087 Not sure where those numbers are coming from but 3D is literally only twice the size of a 2D video at most, as it's just a left eye and a right eye view that makes 3D. The current discs used for 4K at over 100gb are more than enough to store 3D if they only included it in the current UHD specs which they should've. (You can currently make half res 4K discs aka double res 2K in over/under 3D format, but unfortunately it's not compatible with all 4K 3D displays as 4K 3D wasn't standardized.)

Watched Dune in 3D last night...it was super immersive.
I just wish that all movie companies would realize that every one of my friends who sees a good quality 3d are blown away - i hear the word WOW a lot.
Thanks for the review. It's great that though the manufacturers have all but killed 3d at home (darn them!) you're still doing 3d reviews thanks man! I have a still working LG 3d OLED so I snapped this up when it came out. I agree that there is a bit of cross talk in some dark scenes with the floating bright lights which I never usually see with my display. A shame but not a deal breaker. Also some all dark scenes are a bit muddy an indistinct. But the bright outdoor scenes are generally awesome! Overall I'm still very pleased with the 3d experience of this movie big props to the studio for still doing it and making it available to home enthusiasts (although I did have to import it into the UK from Germany via Amazon).

I'll take this type of 3d over 4k any day. Even average depth is better than peach fuzz. It had some cool pop outs too. It's nice wb is still putting out 3d blurays.
Nice to hear your a 3D fan. Whats your best quality 3D Blu-ray recommendation? Have you seen Beowulf 3D on Blu-ray? One of my all time favorites, the 3D in theaters was great.
When I saw this in theatres the 3d was loaded with Crosstalk. At home on my Optoma UHD51A, not a sign.
Details I thought were much better than I was expecting, especially on the close ups.
Although the lack of Atmos is disappointing the 5.1 is still pretty meaty.
Still haven't got the 4k but looking forward to it but usually go 3d given the choice. Always feel alone in that thinking.
Really bums me out that they didn’t even bother to add 3D to the 4K spec.

Love seeing 3D reviews. I do need to add some specific expertise to the areas of 3D perception and what the filmmaker would be going for. Your comments on the 3D being flat in the wide shots is how it should be. Human perception cant see 3D after a distance of 160 to 200 feet from the viewer. Wide vistas in films should NEVER be 3D. If there is a close object in the FG that would be dimensionalized but not larger scenes. If you see a wide shot like this it diminishes the scale and appears like a Model miniature to your brain. Close shots of people will look rounded but at 30 feet away they start to look like cut outs. This happens in reality and in native shot films. Long lens on a native shoot will also compress relative space and produce a cardboard cut out effect. You can see this effect yourself by using a set of Binoculars. You get stereo vision, but because of the zoom factor, it compresses all teh space between objects and flattens far distant objects and people.
If you have any questions about Stereo 3D, I would love to answer them. I am a stereographer with 20 + years of experience. I am looking forward to getting my copy of Dune 3D thanks for the review!
Hi Daniel. Did you get a copy of Dune 3D? I thought the 3D was good but not great. I did notice the banding that Shane talks about and it annoyed me because I thought there was something wrong with my system. What did you think of Dune 3D?
They could of released the 3D version on 2 separate discs, as has been done with the 3D version of The Hobbit movies. Those films are even longer than Dune!! This would have improved picture quality and allowed enough space for the Dolby Atmos sound track! I have pre ordered the HMV 4k steelbook version for £30 instead of paying £25 for the 3D version from Amazon!!

Still have my 65 JS9500 and Panasonic plasma. It is unfortunate this never went anywhere. Both of my TV's are active 3D. I think that is why I fell in love with it. I have a ton of 3D content so I hope they don't die.
Get a projector for 3d/4k, there great. I got the ViewSonic PX701-4K 4K UHD 3200 Lumens pared to Panasonic DP-UB420-K 4k/3d player and the result is "Awsom 3D".
Im in the process of ripping my entire 3d library and muxing in the atmos or dtsx tracks from their 4k companions.
I ordered the 4k version a few days ago, and the following day I discovered the 3D version so I ordered that too. The 3D copy arrived yesterday and watched on our 65" LG C6V 3D OLED and it looked great. Really looking forward to comparing the 4k version when that arrives.

I thought this movie was excellent in 3D. I think it’s the way that Villenueve uses depth in his shots. I prefer it in 3D. I have a Sony Z9D and my only complaint is that the contrast was not great in some of the darker scenes. Also, this could be one of the best sound mixes in the history of cinema so Atmos would have been great. However, I cheated because I have an Apple TV and with the movies anywhere code, you get an Atmos track on Apple TV. So, I just synced the movie and it worked great.
what do you mean with „synched“? You started your 3D bd and the iTunes stream at the same time?
I too was not impressed with the 3D on this movie. The banding is, I think is from compression. This is 2.5 hours 3D movie, and they had to fit the movie (with a frame for each eye) on a 50 GB disc (about 47 GB usable space), plus other foreign language soundtracks. As a result, some scenes are going to be compressed to make it all fit. This might also be the reason for the DTS-HD 5.1 instead of the Atmos mix. It's a long movie with 3D, there's just not enough room on a DL BD. I have seen Shang Chi on Euro 3D BD right before this and was not that impressed with that transfer either. It also did not have an Atmos mix, however, most Marvel 3D BD does come with the DTS-HD 7.1 mix, but most of their movies don't run 2.5 hours. That being said. don't know why WB doesn't at least go for the 7.1. If you look at all of WB 3D BD, they all come with a 5.1 mix and not a 7.1. A great 3D BD movie that I've seen recently, is Kino's release of Flesh for Frankenstien. Not a great movie, but a great 3D BD transfer. Also, check out 3D-Archives Budd Boetticher's 3D western, Wings of the Hawk, and 3D Rarities II - with the first Mexican 3D movie Sword of Granada integrated into the set. Both are great transfers! I have the new Studio Canal release of T2 Judgment Day 3D, this does not seem like a new scan, even if it was, then it seems to suffer from the same overt DNR issues as a previous poster commented on, and the 3D was "meh" at best. Cheers!
they could put it on 2 disk with atmos but im not sure atmos would take up more space then dts 5.1 i think they just do it for resale and later editions

Hi, we in Germany can be happy to have HD sound at all, WB is very reliable there, and I'm grateful that the film was released in 3D at all. I had to get the Korean 3D version of Godzilla vs Kong because it didn't appear here. However, the Korean version and the US version have a German sound ^^
Great that you did a 3D review! I brought the 3D version in the US from Best Buy and I also made a mux with the ATMOS track and it's much better that way ..do some more 3D reviews!

I agree it is getting rare to see 3D movies on blu ray but loved seeing the imax version of Dune and in 4K
3D movies live on in VR as well. Oculus Quest 2 handles it nicely

Got the 4K version last night. I also streamed it on HBOMax when it came out. The disc version is on a whole different level. By far one of the best soundtracks i have heard in awhile. Video is good but its not great. Not mind blowing HDR, but pretty good for the aesthetic they were trying to achieve. The audio track alone makes this a killer movie!

I'm lucky enough to still have my Samsung 50 inch 3D HDTV if my soundbar so I can enjoy watching 3Ds, I normally buy my 3Ds from Amazon because 3D videos have definitely gone out of style years ago
The french version, Dune (2021) 4K - Édition Boîtier Limitée Steelbook (4K UHD + Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray), should have Atmos-Sound on the 3D-Bluray. It does release on January 26th.
I see it often that German Disks skip the Atmos sound, so you have to look in other countries like UK or here France (For example with Basic Instinct, American Psycho and The Hitman´s Bodyguard).
Atmos French not English. It's French market. Unless I'm wrong.
I leave in Canada. Have my 4k blue ray from Amazon in Canada. Also order from Amazon the steel book. Because if French Atmos. It's the first film I. French to have it. All Atmos are like 98% English if not rest is Chinese...
Remember when they DNR'd Terminator 2 for its 3D release (you kind of have to with 3D), and then just used one of the eyes for the official 4K release, becoming the worst looking 4K Blu-ray as a result? I have nothing further to contribute with my comment and it's barely on-topic as it is.

During its opening week I watched Dune twice at the cinema, literally back-to-back. First in IMAX with Laser (4K) then in 3D. I preferred it in IMAX as the screen was massive and felt far more immersive. The sound was significantly better too.
Thought the 3D was pretty good overall for a post-conversion but sadly the screen I watched it on was very small (probably not much bigger than what some people own in their Home Cinema!).
It's crazy that even the standard blu-ray has atmos but not the 3D.
It's not crazy at all. They've been doing this for years now so I don't know why it's still surprising to some.
I believe there's a few that do.
Ordered my 3d version from amazon, it was much cheaper than what I found it going for on ebay. It should be in my mailbox on monday! Im about to pop in the 4k version right now.
3D VR is a new great way to enjoy 3D movies. Meta Quest 3 needs to find an easy way to watch 3D movies for those one arent tech savvy

I LOVE my LG E6. 4k 3d oled with both HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Add an hdfury Arcana to allow full atmos decompression and we have one of the most versatile setups available. Not a real reason to upgrade for this my main screen for movie viewing.
As a fan of 3D I can say that VR is most likely the future of the format. However 3D TVs look the best. The depth is better in a tv over a vr set.

Didnt even know this came out in 3D, I have a 3D projector as well but the movies are very hit/miss. Only 1/10 3d Blu rays are worth speaking of. Most of them are waste of time. But there are select few that will really Knock your socks off big time and its then your glad you have a 3D projector.
3D is better than 2D always
Blu ray 1080p or UHD 4K/8K/12K doesn't matter, 3D is still more immersive

for me 3D is amazing with VR and since there are no glasses that darkens the vision is even better, imagine when uOLED VR headsets hit the market.

you can also buy a Playstation 3 or PS4 which support 3D broadcasting. PS4 also has dedicated 3D headset, called PSVR, incase you don't have a 3DTV.
No Atmos on the 3D is just lazy. Deal breaker for me. Go with the 4K.
Yeah weird choice, considering even the 2D Blu disc has Atmos.
@@theoneders2056 3D takes up more space on the disc than 2D (a picture for each eye), so not enough space left for Atmos as well. They could have split the 3D version on to two discs but then people might have complained about having to switch over.
@@rosstee ah damn, well I wonder if 7.1 would've fit then.
@@rosstee I checked my remuxed copy on my Zappiti and the file info tells me that the dts 5.1 track is 2.52GB and the Atmos track is 3.53GB so they could have easily fit the Atmos track on the disc in place of the dts track.
@@bris007 Maybe they had less than 1GB to spare? 😉 I was talking generally though - a long 3D film will take up a lot of space, and you don't want them to reduce the bitrate/quality too much to make everything fit.

It must be my tv, I don’t have the latest and greatest equipment. There is a lot of crosstalk. Spent hours making adjustments with the tv and player. It seems like I have to choose between having objects close-up or faraway with crosstalk via the adjustments to the equipment. Hopefully it’s just my tv and everyone else can enjoy. But for me it’s unwatchable. I am curious to know if anyone else is having the same problem.
Yep. I have a Sony VPL-HW30ES Full HD 3D Projector and DUNE 3D has unbearable amounts of crosstalk. Strange because crosstalk on every other 3D movie I've watched on it is not an issue. Every once in a while background lights will have some slightly more crosstalk than I'd like to see but by and large its a non issue. Wonder why DUNE is so bad?
I’ve never used a 3d tv but I do use my Sony PlayStation and the PSVR. 3D is unbelievable and it feels like you’re in an actual movie theater. Without ever having used a 3d tv I still hear PSVR is the way to go with 3d movies.

I watch all my 3D movies with the PlayStation VR with my PlayStation 5. Nice thing about watching them with the headset is you do not see any surroundings. #PlayStation5 #Sony #3D #PlayStationVR
How does that work? Doesn’t the glasses cut off a lot of the image, since it’s not widescreen inside the glasses?

3D didn't impressed me at all. Hope 3D is better at home. Saw 3D/Atmos in English and 3D in French. Saw 3 times in IMAX. So total of five. IMAX image and sound all the way plus like better in English. Waiting for my 4k copy due this Thursday. Can't wait. Wish my tv would do 3D thow. Thanks for review.

Thanks for the great review. Will the code that comes with the 3D Blu-ray give you the 4K digital copy or the HD one on iTunes and other streaming sites?
I've read that the bluray is just as good as the 4K and it has atmos too so when I buy the 3D I get the bluray too. What say you? Is the 4K better than the bluray? Thanks I value your opinion :)

They could have just ran out of space for the Atmos Track and the director may not have wanted to compress to much more to keep the Intergrity of the film.
Shane. I have the 715 frim Sony. Been thinking of getting some 3d glasses. Have you compaired these with the Sonys?
Never liked the Sonys. I felt the lenses were too small.
Can I watch 3D Dune or 3D movies on a regular TV? (with those 3D glasses)
Dune 3D (WB 3D Dune blu ray from Germany) does not seen to have much depth where the image comes out of the screen. I would assume that 3D effect feels like the image is close to you. A case in point is the 3D blu ray version of NOAH, where it seems more lifelike and comes out of the screen. Am i correct in noticing the lack of 3D effect in Dune?

I bought the Sony Z9D when it was the last 3D TV Best Buy sold. It's a better TV for it's bright HDR than it's 3D capabilities, unfortunately.
Get an Asus PG278QR. Very good monitor with 1440p and active 3D support.

Loved our LG 3D plasma. Sadly it's on its last legs and about to be replaced by a 4K Sony A80J.
