  • In 1963, Patricia Neal won the Oscar for her performance in "Hud". In this video, I will discuss how her small role ended up in the Best Actress category and why she became the frontrunner to win over co-nominees Leslie Caron, Rachel Roberts, Shirley MacLaine and Natalie Wood.

When I watched Hud, Alma (Patricia Neal) was the most memorable character. I like her quiet but not subdued acting. No dramatic makeup, fancy costumes, dramatic monologues, or nervous breakdowns. She exudes a calm, motherly presence in Hud. She earned her Oscar.

Alma Brown is one of the most dignified and strongest characters I have seen in films. She sticks to her principles and didn't give in till the end. Patricia Neal played her to perfection using her expressive face, husky voice and assured dialogue delivery, leaving a huge impression in a very limited screen time. It's one of my favorite characters and Oscar wins.

She won for a role that could have been easily overlooked or didn't stand out. She's amazing .I love that Patricia Neal refused to do the kiss goodbye .Alma kept her integrity because of Patricia .

Agree, Neal's sage world-weariness, warmth and decency as Alma is unforgettable- such a rich, satisfying performance. I think her goodbye to Lon, then Hud at the bus station sealed the deal for her win.

@@slc2466 I think so too.She is handles each goodbye just right it's more than words it's her tone and manner towards each.

@@kellie-nd1yp Right- when she starts her "Goodbye honey" farewell to Lon, she's remarkably moving, and I've never been able to figure out exactly how Neal pulls off illustrating Alma's despair in such a natural fashion. Then when Hud shows up, she's tough and knowing in her final assessment of him. As you mention, she handles the different dimensions exactly right.

@@kellie-nd1yp Right, she lingers in memory, and is the main female presence in the film, making the Best Actress placement more understandable. Although very different roles, I think it's similar to Anthony Hopkin's Hannibal Lecter in "Silence of the Lambs"; scant screen time could've placed him in Supporting Actor, but Hopkins was clearly a star of that film based on the impact he made, so Best Actor it was.

Another great video- looking forward to watching the other new ones you posted as well. Understand voting is rarely just about the performance, but in this case I don't totally agree regarding sympathy playing a substantial role (much greater post-Oscar tragedy lay ahead for Neal, so I'd get this idea if the win happened a couple years later). IMO it points to how great Neal was as Alma that she could win Best Actress with such limited screen time over co-nominees with bigger roles, such was her impact in the part, leading to those rave reviews that really got the Oscar train rolling for her. Thanks for going over the 1963 awards race in detail, explaining how Neal did win the big Best Actress prizes, at a time when there wasn't a plethora of award groups, which made her path to a Best Actress nomination, then win, plausible.

Neal is very good in the film...I just wish there had been more OF her. My choice is Leslie Caron for her wonderful performance that year.

Leslie would also be my choice but Patricia Neal is wonderful, too. And Rachel Roberts. Three very strong performances, despite the year being considered a weak one

I’m now very curious to have seen Patricia Neal in pumpkin eater. In another universe I suppose.

I remember watching this movie for the first time on VHS, in the ‘90s, and it said that she had won best actress. As the movie progressed, I kept thinking, “Where is she? She is in so little of this movie.” I thought she gave an absolutely perfect characterization of the role, but I couldn’t figure out how she could win best actress with only 15 or 20 minutes of screen time. Watching this video helps explain it. But what I don’t understand is if Margaret Rutherford was beating Patricia Neal in the supporting category, why didn’t they just put Margaret Rutherford in the leading category? Rutherford would have beat Neal in supporting, but not in leading? That makes no sense.

Margaret Rutherford was a typical character actress and considered supporting. Patricia Neal was far more recognised as a leading actress during her career and therefore putting her in lead was more easu

Natalie Wood and that near-abortion scene should have won her the Oscar on her third and final try.
