    I think part of the reason Joan is still talked about today is her ability to transform and change with the times. I’m sure many women who were around her age would have felt that she was a kindred spirit. She was a flapper, a Depression-era worker and a housewife with big aspirations. And I don’t think she was one to rest on her laurels. Say what you want about her, she put in the work, showed up prepared. And the fact that she was brilliantly talented and uniquely beautiful didn’t hurt either.

      One of my favorite actresses of all time. Her flapper/Pre-Code movies, Grand Hotel, the Clark Gable romances, the tough working class strivers, the glamour goddess, The Women, Mildred Pierce, What Ever Happened To Baby Jane... I feel sorry for people who think she's a bad actress and discount her career because of Mommie Dearest. She had great range and fought to stay relevant.

      @@TheSongwritingCat I don't understand that somebody who watched some of her movies would call her a bad actress. Imo the problem is that so many people can't make a difference between the actress and the private person. Does she look good as an abusive mother? - NO. Was she a good and beautiful actress? - YES. The one doesn't need to exclude the other because it's seldom black and white when it comes to real life and real people.

      Joan was a wonderful actress and businesswoman who had an amazing work ethic. She had so many admirable qualities. However (IMO), her abusive and impoverished childhood deeply scarred her and, as she aged, she became an angry, abusive, irrational alcoholic who took out her frustrations on the unfortunate Christina and Christopher.

      Not really just rumors if it’s a firsthand account from her own child. It probably has validity. But everyone is human and deserves to be looked at from a multi-faceted perspective. We tend to make heroes or monsters out of people, and it reduces them to caricatures instead of living, breathing human beings. She wasn’t just a glamorous movie star and she wasn’t just some abusive monstrous person. There were many parts to her, just like with anyone.

    These BKR videos are very refreshing for a film buff like me. I long ago grew fed up with either extreme: the sensationalist scandal-ridden exposes, and the sentimental glorification of old Hollywood. Instead, these videos take a detailed, mature and measured look while still showing affection for the subject. They're not forever pitting actress against actress, or actor against studio. It's a humane, even-handed, cliche-free and grown up look at a complex business and contextualised against the wider backdrop of the times.
    Love it.

      I was named after Katharine Hepburn, but my parents forgot the ‘A’ in her name after a difficult labor and delivery, and a nurse put an ‘E’ in my name and birth certificate.
      My sister was named after Brooke Shields.
      I HATED my name growing up, always wanting to be a ‘Christina’ or ‘Jennifer’- by my, oh my, I’m so grateful my parents named me Katherine.
      Thanks Momma & Pop!
      I wouldn’t trade it for ANYTHING in the world.

    At the end of the day, cinema remains, above all else, a VISUAL medium, and, consequently, part of the great fascination which continues to surround Crawford's mystique 43 years after her death stems from that absolutely gorgeous face of hers. Her stunning beauty and screen presence, especially in the 1930s and 1940s, aided by her enormous talent and her keen sense of 'audience identification,' has become her timeless calling card in modern times, a visual legacy which still transcends space and time and attracts young fans to her persona 116 years after her birth. Very few women, Monroe among them, come close to the kind of legendary visual impact the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s Crawford possessed to mesmerize audiences and keep them spellbound for a lifetime. Her acting ability, keen sense of her own trajectory and fan base, as well as her own complicated personal and public life, added additional layers of gravitas to her beauty and ultimately propelled her into iconic status across generations, but it is that perfect Crawford face that continues to draw and enthrall fans.

      I agree, charmingdresden. Davis' gave a marvelous performance but she was never the favorite to win that night. As great a film as it is, Baby Jane was still technically a B- horror film, and Academy VERY rarely gave out Oscars at that time for those types of films. Quite the opposite, The Miracle Worker had everything Oscar loved- challenging material but an uplifting true story, with stage pedigree. I would think it was between Anne Bancroft and Geraldine Page, honestly.

    • @henryjackson2357
      @henryjackson2357 5 років тому +7

      mnmcv1 I disagree, I think her chances were better then you're saying. I think enough people recognized that this was basically a kind of art film masquerading as a cheapie b-movie (Aldrich and Davis elevate the material to stately, artistic levels) and that Davis' work was a masterpiece of acting. Also, it was a box office bonanza, which I'm sure didn't hurt her. I def think people saw merit in both the film and her performance that she was a very possible front runner. I honestly believe she probably would have won if it hadn't been for Crawford's petulant meddling in the voting. She got just enough people to sway to Bancroft and it worked. Joan def believed Bette had a real shot at a third win and she wasn't going to allow that. (11/29/18)
