When mounting under the car and the fans are on the bottom side(towards the ground) it’s ideal to set the fans up to pull. Making a pass or driving down the road the underneath side of the car creates a low pressure area. So pulling will pull air down through the cooler. Then the fan isn’t trying to fight against the low pressure and burning fans up and not cooling to the best of its ability.
That can certainly work. If you can mount the cooler at a little bit of an angle pointing the fan towards the back of the car so ram air can do more of the work when you are moving, that's even better. I mounted a thick 30 row engine oil cooler with a fan and shroud under the back of my Honda when it still had the auto and tilted it back as much as I could without it hanging down, which was around 2 inches. I wired the fan to a 180 degree thermostatic switch, but I don't remember it ever heating up enough to need the fan. As I remember, the temp normally sat at around 150-160 degrees max when driving down the highway on 100 degree days and I think the highest I ever remember seeing it was around 170.

I checked my derale cooler just like the one you’ve got in the video and it’s a pull fan only. You can reverse polarity but the fan blades only move air well one way. Which is pulling.
I bought a remote transmission cooler and fan to be rear mounted for four reasons. The radiator has enough to do, just cooling the engine coolant. The transmission lines used to pass right by the headers. The engine has enough heat blowing back from the radiator. Looks cool 😎
I'd love to see a tech tip about transmission temperatures, and what's normal, and what's a normal warmup timeframe. My powerglide with a high stall gets warm QUICK.. Curious how normal it is.
@@MotionRaceworksOfficial it's around a 3600 stall.. the temp sensor I have is in the pan.. the temp reading on the converter I did using a thermal camera because I had only run it for a few minutes after being in 20 degree ambient temp and converter was hot to the touch. I'll also say I'm running hydraulic fluid not atf at the recommendation of my trans builder..
@@MotionRaceworksOfficial and the thermal camera read 175 degrees on the converter after about 3 minutes of idle and about 100' of moving around the building
You need to get a sensor/gauge on it. By touch isn’t gunna tell you anything. If it’s over 120* you won’t be able to touch it. You ever get under your daily and put your hand on the differential after driving home from work? You’d be surprised how hot it feels
Just my personal experience, I had bought a derale cooler for my 80e and floor mounted it like this and had nothing but heat issues, would never come down below 195 after it got to temp, even tried mounting it up front at an angle underneath the bumper of the truck and still wouldn’t cool down. Bought the tru cool 40k, mounted behind my intercooler and haven’t had an issue since. So I would not reccomend doing this with a 4l80e
Thanks Doug! I was going to ask if you ran it as a pusher or a puller. But i scrolled down to see someone else asked that question and you replied. Thanks!
Hey man thanks great videos you produce, I need to do that to my aussie HQ Monaro, instead of having it up the front! now I have my own hoist it should be nice and easy to mount.
Great video. Helping my son mount on to his old SUV. What size Rivnuts and bolts did you use for this install and it was no big deal drilling through the undercarriage of the vehicle?
This caught my eye as a potential fix for my 2012 Nissan Rogue, TSB states an additional external cooler is required and the break-fix la cheapa cooler I installed in the recommended location (in front of the rad) just really didn't help all that much. So my question is, even though the underside of the car is a pretty good place for something that will often be on a trailer, what about applications like mine where standing water may be a concern, or just a lot of moisture in general?
Great video and ironic timing. Im actually in the process of relocating my cooler to the rear of the car where the muffler would normally be(1990 camaro) and Im having trouble deciding which Derale cooler to run. Which one are you running on the Nova? And do you think I should mount it on the floorboard instead or do you have any experience mounting them in the rear as I'm considering? Just wondering about your personal experience.
Any issue with doing this on a daily driver. I have a 94 s10 and I swapped to electric fans and aluminum radiator. I don’t really like the transmission cooler in the radiator the design and how it has to be plumbed. So I’d like to go to a cooler like this.
Im running this cooler under the car mounted horizontally similar to what Doug shows here. Its on a G8 and it tucked up in a pocket where the stock fuel tank used to be. Im seeing temps up close to 250 degress without abusing the car (just cruising around in stop and go traffic). Trans is a 4L80. I added spacers close to an inch and a half to make sure it had space around it for air flow. I also tried reversing the fan. Any ideas on why I cant keep the temp under control? Sensor is mounted in the line between the trans and the cooler.
So just drill holes and bolt it to the floor? Almost feels wrong putting bolt holes in the floor or the car lol I’m debating bolting mine to my transmission crossmember although not sure how I’ll bolt it in a way that is sturdy enough doing it that way. What about rivnutting it to the floor?
I'm going to get one of your coolers when I get to that point. My question is this well be a sand toy but theres always rocks and logs hidden. I have room in front of the rad. Would that be the best placement or bed mount it. I'm just thinking air movement thru the grill will help.
I have a F150 that has the trans cooler plumbed into the radiator and has it's own heat exchanger up front of it. What is your suggestion then? Do you just block off the radiator port? I would like to boost this truck and relocating the trans cooler is going to have to happen for the intercooler to sit up against everything flat and flush. I was going to just drop it below the radiator behind the bumper in front of the bumper cutout in the center. I am struggling with how to make that happen as I have never done that before.
@@MotionRaceworksOfficial I am a high functioning retard, so I am clear with understanding, pushing from the ground up towards the floorboard? I should've asked the initial question better. Thank you. The videos are great.

If the drive shaft breaks the trans cooler would be the last thing on my mind. At the least it has to have a drive shaft loop which is required at 13.99 and faster with slicks and 13.00 and faster with street tires. So you are correct it's a great idea!
I’m thinking 85-90 is a lot in the lighter side of things from what I heard coming into Noble, Ok!! Everybody I spoke with said they were passed like they were sitting still yet their speedo read 80!? Lmao
Try reversing the direction of air flow to see if that makes a difference. I have a B&M cross flow cooler & my setup works better with fan pulling the air through the cooler. Some setups may work better as a pusher. Experiment & see if it makes a difference.

That’s how we have it mounted on our Raceweek nova and it pulls a small trailer and keeps temps 160-170 going down the interstate
