Dude watching you break both beads and just pull the tire off in 3 minutes, new one back on in less than 5 left me speechless. I never thought of using a centerstand to break bead, learn something new every day. Thanks
I’m trading in my R nine T for a GS1200. As I venture into the world of adventure bikes and touring, it reassuring to know that there is quality content like this out there. Great video.
Just used your technique and it went almost as easy as your instructions! I've always depended on others to mount my tires but now I have the power! ;) Cheers!
The softer the surface you're riding on, the softer the tire you want. Sand is very soft, so a lower pressure is called for. I just avoid riding in sand with my bike when I can. Good video, you made that look easy.
Thanks for posting this! I asked my BMW shop how to do this and they wouldn't even entertain the idea of me trying this myself. I'm looking for your other video of how to change the front tire now. Looks like that silicone really helps you to break the bead if you put it on when you install a new tire.
This gives me LOTS of hope when I start camping and backroading on my '09 GS! Thank you so much! Great looking GS Adventure, the only bike I'd willingly trade my GS for. Cant beat that tank size :)
Great video and thanks for that great tip to break the bead. Can't wait to have a go. Read and enjoyed ARM for the first time recently. It was bought for me by a pal whilst recovering from a broken leg loosing grip riding my GS through a ford!!!! Great idea, could'a been good fun but ended up in an ambulance then Macclesfield Hospital UK. Great treatment and thanks to the staff there I'm almost ready to ride again.
Great job explaining the process man, being a tire tech and having to fight tires even with a machine, makes this process a hole lot easier on trail..it's a good process not just for enduro but for offload bikes too. Loved your bead breaker btw...lol
thank you for showing this, i have the tire checker i ordered inside the tire and I'm not sure how not to mess up, but the changing has helped a lot, i just bought fully loaded R1200GS
Bill, Using the side stand to break the bead is genius! I’m a new rider and I was wondering why the rear tire doesn’t need to be balanced. Thanks for sharing.
On a GS, the rear wheel is shaft driven, not chain and so therefore gets bolted straight to the shaft. Shaft driven bikes only need to worry about balancing the front
Inspired me, got a flat and the shops won’t touch them anymore just sell you a new tire. I’ve done two now. Let,s see a front tire done so quickly and easy.
Excellent vid, thank you! Your comment about the use of lube is REALLY important. I find that some sort of lube makes all the difference between easy and "gee am I going to get hurt doing this." Your suggestion for the silicone lube is quite good since it doesn't dry out like soapy type products, and that matters right from the very first time you install a new tire as it tends to keep that bead slippery for a long, long time. The zip tie trick really helps if the bead won't pop in.
All done: all tips are really appreciated. My bead didn't pop as easily as yours (or maybe I didn't dare put enough uhhhhmmmpfff into it at the beginning: a little soapy water around the rim seemed to help. Same for putting on the new tire: slipped on like Snow White's Alpinestars with soapy lube. Cheers!
@jupejupes Oh protip: In trying to get the last little bit of tire onto the wheel (4:06) , if 180 degrees around the tire is on the bead seat, there's no chance of getting the last little bit on. Notice nowhere on bill's tire is it seated on wheel. Try to get as much of the tire towards the center and into the dip between both bead seats. If you do that, it's literally 3 spoonings. Otherwise, you'll rip the rubber and the tire's cords and the tire still won't pop on.
This was a very helpful video! I need to master these skills for future off-road adventures. When will you do a similar video for a front tire change on a GS 1200? Thanks!
Tried this one with my gs. Had the whole bike leaned on the sidewall of the tire, still couldnt break the bead. Did have the bike fall over on me though when the tire popped out from under the stand on one attempt so that was fun. Was really hoping it would be this easy
amigo es excelente lo que nos enseñas. en Colombia la mayoría de personas pagan para que les reparen la moto y nadie le enseña a uno a mantenerlas en buen estado.
So before you remove the rear tire you just put the stand lock the from break, and then remove the bolts and pull it straight off. It that correct or do you need to loosen up something else?
Great video. What brand/ tool did you use to pop out the tires? And how did you balance the tire? I have heard balancing is no longer required. Finally, how do you know the bead is up again? Want to do it myself first time.
Most guys I know who are changing the tire on an ADV bike in the field don't bother with the balance, especially if they are not going to be hitting highway speeds. I know a couple of others that use the beads, just pour a couple of ounces in the tire before seating the bead and you're good. I have been skeptical of the beads but I know guys that swear by them for ADV bikes and I've never heard of any issues. If I'm changing a at home I always balance on a stand, but I don't know how that would work with that rear wheel on the GS, the hole in hub is too large to work on my setup.
I'm doing this now with Anakee 3s. Got the front done now working on the rear. I'm having a hard time popping the bead. My bike fell over like 3 times already.
Hi Bill, I wounder what type of compressor your using, I have Goggled but can't find an as small and digital as the one yours... Thanks for a great video... /Johan
Do you know if the basic tool kit should include the torx t40-50 for the back tire removal? Or the front tire needed tools? Mine only came with a couple of allen and other tools that I have no idea what they are for ..
looks pretty routined ;). But I`d never put any lube, Silicone... on the rim or the tyre itself!?!?! When you go to the dirt and halfen the air pressure, how should the tire have enough friction in the rims to remain where it is? Maybe not that critical with tubeless tires but my dirties all have tubes... .
There is no requirement to balance your motorcycle tires. As James suggested, it's more important with sport bike tires than a GS with knobbies. That said, when home I often balance the rim first, then the tire/wheel assembly. When on the road then I simply remove the second set of weights when mounting a new tire and it's pretty close. It will run a tad smoother when balanced, but it all depends upon how lucky you are with the replacement tire's quality and balance. Subjective is the key word.
It depends on if it is Bill or someone else doing the tire change. I have personally seen Bill change a tire on a GS in about 10 minutes. Me on the other hand takes about 30-40 minutes.
So I was ready to give up and then I watched your video and just decided to get a little bit more aggressive than whammo. The tire went on really 5:10 easy. Amazing what you can do once you think you can get it done instead of think you can’t get it done
i to own 09 gsa great video liked to see the bead breaker being used but we are waiting on the front tire video please hurry lol hope to see u at the moa rally in branson mo 2012
Thanks a lot, Your vid really helped me do it myself. Although the tyres on my S10 come off and on a lot less easy than you make it look in the video. :D But maybe the K60 Scout is a more rigid tyre, I don't know.
Why do I feel like these knobs should be lasting longer than 2500 miles? Is that a lot of tar use as well? I'm just getting into this, so sorry if it's a silly question. I was really hoping the knobs would be running around 8k for miles, or better.. Is this a good tire that most people use?? Any other longer lasting options out there??
Dude watching you break both beads and just pull the tire off in 3 minutes, new one back on in less than 5 left me speechless. I never thought of using a centerstand to break bead, learn something new every day. Thanks
I was watching this to see what bead breaker he used. Lol
Manly shit
12 years later ....preciate your video..thank you for the lesson
I’m trading in my R nine T for a GS1200. As I venture into the world of adventure bikes and touring, it reassuring to know that there is quality content like this out there. Great video.
Probably the best tire change video I've seen. I especially like the center stand bead break.
Just used your technique and it went almost as easy as your instructions! I've always depended on others to mount my tires but now I have the power! ;) Cheers!

Always a pleasure to watch someone efficiently get the job done. Thanks for the lesson.
This gives me LOTS of hope when I start camping and backroading on my '09 GS! Thank you so much!
Great looking GS Adventure, the only bike I'd willingly trade my GS for. Cant beat that tank size :)
Thanks Bill ! You have no idea how much we all need to see this ...

I just bought a 2009 R1200 GSA, I NEED TO LEARN. You just showed me a lot right here. Great video! Appreciate the effort you put into it.
Good video! No time wasted with waffle and bull crap, just straight forward direction on how to change the tire.
Great job explaining the process man, being a tire tech and having to fight tires even with a machine, makes this process a hole lot easier on trail..it's a good process not just for enduro but for offload bikes too. Loved your bead breaker btw...lol
I agree, I have changed many tires in my cycling career and have NEVER had a tire come off that easy even with lube. It's always a battle.
Nice. Question-do you adjust tire marker (usually colored spot) to valve stem and what about balancing?
Excellent video, thanks a lot.. Just bought my first BMW R1200GS and I like to do things myself and save that extra money for the fun stuff !
This video is much appreciated, plan on getting a GS in the near future.
thank you for showing this, i have the tire checker i ordered inside the tire and I'm not sure how not to mess up, but the changing has helped a lot, i just bought fully loaded R1200GS
Great tip on the factory BMW bead breaker. A head slapper moment for me. Nice job.

@@joshuabowen8918 even shaft driven bikes with tpms sensors need balancing
Amazing job. Really appreciated the safety steps as well. Thx
Excellent tutorial on rear tire replacement!
Thanks a lot for the vid. It was very helpful as I had never changed any large MC tire. Cheers!
Great video could you please tell me the nut size tool I need for the rear
Great lesson lesson. Just curious what torque spec that was on the rear wheel .
Thanks man. Directly on the point.
Excellent video.
How do you balance the tire?
This is on the "to do" list next tire change. This skill is invaluable, especially in the outback! Thanks for the great instructional video!
Great video Bill.
Thanks for the video. Is it necessary to torque the bolts when you put it back on.
Inspired me, got a flat and the shops won’t touch them anymore just sell you a new tire. I’ve done two now. Let,s see a front tire done so quickly and easy.
super Idee mit dem Ständer die Decke von der Felge zu drücken. Muss man erstmal drauf kommen. 👍

Brilliant, never thought to use the side stand to break the bead. That will save me time in the future!
Fantastic instructional! Many thanks. Hitting it up tomorrow morn. Looking very forward to your front tire instructional too.
Cheers, CLJ
amazing.. many thanks for taking the time. personally learnt alot .. again thanks

Thanks, you're method even works with Metzeler Tourance (2 years on rim with no lube)which is a difficult tyre to remove.
Great video, I will be changing my next tire, real soon!
Do you have a video for a front tire change on BMW 1200GS?
Thanks for the lesson, I hope next time it goes that easy for me. Kudos
Thanks for the video. I am looking forward to the video on changing a front tire.
Put this video on and bingo
Came up with a great idea
Thank You
Thank you, good luck on your adventuretrips !!!
Man that was awesome!! Thks from Texas
Damitte man ...great vid!..you make it seame so easy...(and also make me feel kinde of a amature,...)😂😊 greatings from belgium ...grts steve .👍
Bill, nicely done. Keep sharing the vids brother.
Good instructions for GS drivers and a cool american voice to hear... 😉👌
This was a very helpful video! I need to master these skills for future off-road adventures. When will you do a similar video for a front tire change on a GS 1200? Thanks!
Thanks my friend for the video. Very good. Congratulations from Brazil.
Makes it look so easy ….i also want to try this now !!!!! Good video ….
What do you do about balancing the tire and rim? Thanks in advance.
Great video, when will you do one for the front tyre ?
Love the centre stand technique
Tried this one with my gs. Had the whole bike leaned on the sidewall of the tire, still couldnt break the bead. Did have the bike fall over on me though when the tire popped out from under the stand on one attempt so that was fun. Was really hoping it would be this easy
Great video Bill. Very useful, tks!

At 4:45, was that a macaw? It kinda sounded like my blue and gold.
Such an awesome channel...needs more videos:(
Was that tire tubeless?
Nice vid. Question, How about balancing? No need ?

Here in Germany the continental tkc80 is approved to be used to 160 km/h tops. No need for balancing.
You sure know how to maintenance Your own bike, good job ....
Yes, sometimes seating the bead is a pain, but we always manage somehow.
How the rear wheel bolts on is to sick!
Thanks Bill, this is such a well explained video! Much appreciated..
I'm doing this now with Anakee 3s. Got the front done now working on the rear. I'm having a hard time popping the bead. My bike fell over like 3 times already.
Awesome Video man - Thanks for Sharing this technique
Hi Bill,
I wounder what type of compressor your using, I have Goggled but can't find an as small and digital as the one yours...
Thanks for a great video...
/Johan
I like this video and would like to see you change the front tire.
Great job. Very nice video. Thank you
How do you balance a motorad read tire? The hole is like 62mm and 72mm. There's no bolt or common rod to rotate it about for balancing.
Contact Marc Parnes products he makes adapters and balancers. I bought the adapter is very well made.
Do you know if the basic tool kit should include the torx t40-50 for the back tire removal? Or the front tire needed tools? Mine only came with a couple of allen and other tools that I have no idea what they are for ..

love this video. its almost perfect. please do more adventure based videos.
And how would one balance the wheel? If needed
great illustrative video
Any experience when the tyre flat and the only choice to keep moving by inserting tube in it ? Will it damage the tyre pressure monitor ? Thank you
since you dont usually balance these do you make sure the red dot is at the valve stem? thanks
Nice job!
Compliments from Italy
Wouldn’t you also want to torque those lug bolts?
Thank you for a very thoughtful video. Just out of curiosity, out on the trail how long would this typically take to complete?
It depends on if it is Bill or someone else doing the tire change. I have personally seen Bill change a tire on a GS in about 10 minutes. Me on the other hand takes about 30-40 minutes.

Thanks Bill for this course! Very clear.
Even with my two "left hands", I'm sure I'm gonna work this easy out! ;)
Thanks for the video, Please make some more! You got the touch!!
Obrigado!!
Great video!
