Super helpful video. I'm new to video and have been struggling to learn all of the different options let alone what the G9 offers. Thank you for the clear explanation!
Very useful! I am not doing video at all , just glanced over video menus ones and did run away terrified by all these choices :) Your explanation is best which I saw anywhere. Now it is my turn to take piece of paper :) I think it would be good if camera manufacturers would put a small set of cheatsheet cards for various aspects of cameras, especially video modes. Thanks a lot for video!
Thank you so much, this has really helped me understand my video settings. I am by nature a stills photographer, digital video photography is all new to me and vey confusing, lol
@@RogerinFinland It was exactly what i was after as i am learning the video settings on my G9 and your video explained perfectly all the various settings. Thank you !
Hi Roger, I'm hoping you or someone can answer this question. I currently reside in South Africa and purchased the G9 from Amazon in the States. When the camera arrived I noticed that it was formatted for NTSC countries, however we operate on PAL. The PAL version has all the different frame rates, 24,25,30,50, and 60p. If I were to purchase V-log L, would that sort out the frame rate issue I have as at the moment all I have are 24,30, and 60p?
I can't quite answer. Here in Finland I got a "PAL G9" and it had all the frame rates available. I assumed (wrongly obviously) they they just ignored NTSC and PAL and have everything to everyone. My guess (and it's just a guess) is that the V-log upgrade wouldn't do anything to the frame rates. I think it basically enables something, but doesn't affect frame rates. I hope someone can give you an actual answer without the guessing!
@@RogerinFinland Thanks for the quick reply Roger. That is what I assumed too. It's just weird that they would do that, why not include it all in one package. Thanks for the great content.
@@RogerinFinland I wonder if converting a 4k 4.2.2 10bit mov file to Prores format will be a good idea for davinci resolve free (Windows) version to work properly. Will I lose a lot of quality? How much bigger will be the file? What output format to use on youtube platform to make it look best? I want to play with colors in post-production.
I don't remember the details, but use the "V" rating to decide. v30 means "max sustained write speed of 30MB/s" which is 240Mbps. So it depends on the video bitrate.
I keep toying with the idea of picking up a GH5 or G9 for my kit (I shoot with Sony currently). It surprises me that Panasonic’s “super slow mo” capabilities are limited in the fact that you can only record up to 60fps with audio and autofocus. My A6400 & A6100 can shoot up to 120fps with autofocus & audio and that’s in the regular camera settings, it’s not a VFR mode or in Sony’s case it’s not the S&Q mode. Sure it’s not 180fps like Panasonic but at least I have the freedom to utilize the audio if I choose to and also rely on Sony’s amazing autofocus. Gives me a lot to think about 🤔 Anyways thank you very much for this detailed and helpful video! 🙏🏽
I don't have the G9 anymore to check precisely, but keep in mind that it is 60fps at 4K while the a6x00 can do only 30fps in 4K. In S&Q with the Sony's you can only use FullHD, anyways. I can't remember which frame rates are available outside of VFR, but you also get 10bit with the G9 (a dream in Sony-land). There are places where Sony clearly wins (sensor size, noise and especially autofocus) but video specs, Panasonic still wins.
@@RogerinFinland I agree with Panasonic having the upper hand in resolution and frame rates. I was referring to FHD specifically and comparing the slow mo capabilities with both cameras. The UA-camr iPhonedo made a great point when comparing the GH5 to A6500, “it doesn’t matter if you’re shooting 4K 60fps or 1080p 180fps in 10bit 4:2:2 etc if your image is out of focus.” My Sony cameras have been reliable in every way and I’m pretty much a one man band in both UA-cam and vlogging so the limitations of Panasonic’s autofocus in slowmo makes the G9 & GH5 less and less appealing TBH. Only thing it’s got going is the IBIS and I own gimbals so I got that covered. Can I ask why you got rid of your G9?
Oh yes, I totally agree about the importance of focus, and the absolutely great Sony autofocus compared to the dubiously-OK-ish from Panasonic 😁 And I sold the G9 to finance a Zcam E2-S6. I guess I went from bad AF to full manual focus 😅 When I need AF I have an a6400 and an Olympus EM1 mk II 👌🏻
@@RogerinFinland Haha fully manually focusing is fine if you’re going to be behind the camera and you know what you’re doing. Me on the other hand, I’m usually in front of the camera and usually too distracted to fiddle around with any focusing and what not. I hope you’re enjoying your new setup! 😊
Oh yes!! Actually my two criteria for recommending a camera for UA-cam are: great autofocus and great stabilization. And my favourite camera to do UA-cam videos now is that Zcam without either 😂 I will do a video on that topic. But I love to use it and how it looks. My last video (gift recommendations) was shot with the S6, and I really like how the image looks.
Brother Why G9 dont have autofocus on VFR video modes And highframe rate mode Whenever i try to record 8bit video in 1080Vfr it Only focuses manually there is no autofocus 😑
The dial will get you in movie mode, with all appropriate settings. The red button starts recording. I wouldn't start recording unless I'm in movie mode though, I'd loose the feel of control 😅
Hej! Im in Stockholm.do you happen to know how to activate the "levelling grid" on the G9? Its not the guidelines the one Sony III has also.it moves to show the horizon or if the frame is oriented properly.thanks in advance

Hello can anybody help me? I have an issues, when I select MOV format and I choose 4k 30p 10bit (422) (150mbs) I record video and in camera it plays just fine. Then when I insert my SD card into my laptop I open and play it I see a slide show, the video is very laggy and it freezes a lot. I tried to open in in Premiere Pro same issue please help! Also i am using samsung pro 64 gb uhs 1/ "3" 95 mbs sd cards my prediction its my memory cards but yeah... =(
Are you trying to play it from the card in your computer? Is it still laggy if you copy the files to your hard drive? And is that an SSD or some old HD? My guess is that your computer is not powerful enough or that you are playing it from your SD card. Good luck!!
@@RogerinFinland Hello! Thank you for advice but I dont think this is the issue when I copy video footages to my ssd and open it in premiere pro and my computer isnt old at least it has 16gb ram and intel core i5 7th gen aswell as nvidia geforce card, this seems strange to me can you think anything else ?
Sorry, no idea... I have a laptop also with 16Gb of ram, i8750, and a 1070 and works fine there. I use Davinci Resolve and not Premiere, but I doubt that's the issue. Running out of ideas but, have you tried with a different SD card?
I have a few questions, can you do MOV, FHD, 422, 10-bit? And what about super slow motion at say 100/120 fps? Is that possible? Also, what are your opinions on the G9 video compared to XT3 and A7iii? Thanks!
Yes, MOV,FHD,422 and 10 bit is possible at 25, 30, 50 and 60p all of them at 100Mbps. 100/120fps is possible using only VFR, which is not available in 10bit. Can't compare it to XT-3, but I like the video files better than the A7iii. Granted, the A7iii is MUCH better in Autofocus and low light, but you only get 8 bit, and 420 internally. Externally it'll do 422 but still only 8bit. I hope this answers your questions, and you consider subscribing! 😊
