Reasons why I appreciate Hannah #64: instead of moving on after her initial impression of the glitter, she sought to find what the glitter COULD do, rather than just labeling it as a “bad” product.
All to often, eyeshadows especially, are judged based on the user’s preference of texture or performance, rather than the product’s own virtues or possibilities. There is a difference between a product that performs differently than hoped or expected, and one that is of poor quality.

AW, thanks for saying this! I agree, it's best to really try to work with the product in the way it was intended. That's part of how we expand our own horizons. Sometimes I feel like the product teaches me.

Love your comment about lusting after something only to be let down every time. It's true. It's only an object and once we have it in our possession we begin to realize that it wasn't the magical solution to all our problems and we begin to lust after the next "item" we Just Have To Have! Such a vicious cycle that is so hard to stop.

I was let down by the Gingerbread palette. I had hyped it up so much in my head. It’s nice but... it’s just an eyeshadow palette & I have multiple similar shades already. 🤦🏻‍♀️

@@calmthefarmYT That's how I felt about the Norvina Palette. I let all the UA-camrs convince me that it was soooo amazing I just had to have it and now I never use it at all. Every morning I see it when I'm getting ready and it makes me feel stupid for following the herd.

L GIbson lol, I did it with Norvina as well, haven’t even used it yet! Trying to stay away from Sultry. I’m certain I have various versions of it in my collection, I just need to be ok with going to different palettes...😳😬🤷🏻‍♀️

All this talking about the Denona star palette made me so greedy. But you know what? I opened my tiny drawer with my precious collection of eye shadows. I had a look at my beautiful Chanel quads, my Burberry quad and my 2 Viséart Theory palettes. And I realised I would not ever want to trade them for your Star palette! 😊❤️🌟

I love a little bit of shimmer on the lower lash line, I really don't know why it fell out of favor in recent years, I'm so glad to have seen quite a few looks on yt lately using shimmer in various intensity on lower lash. An antiqued gold/bronze is so pretty on lower lash!

I will say when Natasha created the star palette is was just before the abh renaissance palette came out. It was before red became huge. She said in a video she created them to be sheer not full impact. Because reds at the time weren't being used for full impact. So I definitely agree they aren't amazing full impact. I still love the star palette though. An I definitely dont mind using a glitter adhesive with the shimmers. It's so worth it. I just love when she sticks to her good formula. An I love the same shadows you do. Love the looks you did!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this entire review of the Star palette. What's curious for me is that I wouldn't have any interest at all in the palette, until someone on YT makes great looks with it. Then suddenly I'm wanting "it," whatever the "it" is. Something for me to explore further along my no-buy path ... and another reason for me to be very discerning about my YT viewing habits.
I certainly do relate to making a thing much more than it is. Once I bought a car that is marketed to outdoorsy people and activities, thinking having it would make me more outdoorsy and active. It actually did to a small degree, but the vast majority of the life of the car was spent driving back and forth to work. How very mundane. I give these sort of magical powers to soooooo many things, then crash when the magic isn't really in the thing. Live and learn, hopefully!

This was a lovely review. Really breaking down the similarities and shades helps us all to see not just this beautiful object, but the colors we might have already in our collection. And to think more about the style of makeup we would achieve with this.

I picked up the star palette during the sephora sale, so it is freshly opened, although I don't know when mine was manufactured. My reds are "gently pigmented" as well. They aren't patchy and they blend nicely, but the intensity is not there. It works fine for me, because I use them more to shift the undertone of a look to a more purpley/pink or red.
I also think I have finally found the difference between cosmo and spectrum is that spectrum has a dark brown base and cosmo has a light brown base. Granted you can't really see the difference when applied or swatched since there is so much shine/glitter when applied.

Yeah to be honest with makeup, I don’t care what the packaging says. If it smells fine and looks fine I’ll use it. If it smells funny or changes I’ll get rid of it. My exception is mascara, I try to get makeup in a pump when possible as well.

When I see you using this palette, for the first time I think of how perfect it would be for making gorgeous, droopily heavy Theda Bara kind of looks. You're right on with the dream dying/buying cycle. When I was younger, it was magazines and commercials pushing these improbable scenarios of how life would be for us, if we bought X lipstick or X eye trio. It was all around, but still more subtly. I'm noticing the bombardment more lately, because I signed up to more brand sites recently just to get a feel for the brands; but it comes down to a sick reality of something like 70 makeup marketing messages a day, just in my inbox. Hard to keep the fantasy acquisitions down that way!

Hannah, you created such beautifull looks during those 5 days.I loved each look so much, and every look looked so different on you, realy fantastic. You did a great job learning so much about a pallet in such short amount of time.It realy surprises me that you don’t only love colours but you find the texture from the colour as important as the colour by itself. When I was a lot younger I only found the colours important, now I am a little older I find the behavior of the colour and the texture as important as the colour. It’s always good to have Dreams and create more dreams, new dreams.I am so glad for you that Wendy gave you the opportunity to make your dream complete, you used that pallet already in so many different ways.I think that your favorite dreampallet doesn’t excist, there are in each pallet a few colours that you would like to change,or you need to create your own dreampallet Made out of single shadows, and I realy think that your dreampallet would include shadows from different brands, because every brand has a few shadows that needed a place in your dreampallet.I thought for a very long time that all the different choclatbar pallets were my absolute dreampallet, and I collected 7 different ones,in a longer period of time, because I got from my husband on special occasions like my birthday, christmas, valentinesday,a new choclatbarpallet, and they are still by far my favorit pallets, and I use them very often, but in each pallet there or one or two shadows that I like a little less, because of the behavior of that colour or because of the texture why they wear different as I thought they would, and because of that they are not my dreampallet but my favoritepallets, and I still wear those shadows that are different as my expectations were, because I got used to them.I created about a half year ago my own pallet with colours which were in different pallets from many different brands.I got 19 eyeshadowpallets where I empties the most beautifull colours out of those pallets,so each pallet had only a few colours left, and most of these colours I had never used, because the most beautifull colours had always my priority to use and empty those colours. When I was reorganizing my make-up I found that all these pallets take so much room,so I had two options, the first option was to declutter all those 19 pallets, and option two was to get every eyeshadow out of the pallets and Made a new pallet with it,so I took a flat wooden box and I glued every shadow in it,organised by colours from light to dark, and that pallet became my dreampallet, because it has every colour,it has Matts, shimmers, foiled, metalics,in each shade, and before I glued the colours in the box I swatched every colour, and the colours that I didn’t like I decluttered. So I have now one big pallet that I use on almost a daily base, with all the colours and textures of my dreams. This eyeshadowpallet is filled with colours that I had for years and I would declutter because it cost me to much time to open so many pallets which only have one or a few colours left in it,to complete an eyelook. The only negative thing about it is that my own Made pallet is very big,so I can’t bring it with me,I only can use it at home. But I know for sure that when I have in the future other eyeshadowpallets with only a few shades left, that I Will make another pallet with it.This is something that I regret that I didn’t do this earlier, because I decluttered many pallets in the past which had only a few shades left. And I always loved it to wear the same colour eyeshadow as my blouse,or sweater,or shirt. And my home Made pallet has each colour in different shades from light to dark, that’s why I use it almost daily, and when I empty a few pans I take those out and I reorganise my wooden box and glue every shade again,so it stays organised. And when I empty a lot of pans I deffinetly take a smaller box or pallet where everything fits in because it’s easier to use a smaller box or pallet.Never thought that I would use those left over colours with so much fun that I call it my dreampallet, and each collour didn’t impress me enough to use it when it was in the original pallets, and after a while you forget which colours are in pallets that I didn’t use for such a long time. And I didn’t check the expire dates on those pallets, but when I Swatch a colour and it looks right, and it doesn’t smell bad than I use it,I be more carefull with mascara’s and eyepencils because they are in direct contact with my eyes and I realy don’t want a eyeinfection, but I spray my eyepencils and eyeshadows on a regular base with alcohol, also my bullet lipsticks,it is good for getting rid of bacteria, and it isn’t bad for your make-up to spray it with alcohol.Hannah I loved this video and how you feel about that pallet that you wanted so bad,it may not be your dreampallet but you can create amazing looks with it.And when you look so long foreward to own that pallet, because you wanted to buy it after your no buy, then you automaticly think that it Will be your dreampallet, because you knew so much about that pallet and revieuws.but it’s still a fantastic pallet, now you can go look for another dreampallet, and once you Will find one or create one,you realy deserve it after a no buy year, and not only with make-up,but a no buy year in everything except for food, and drinks.I am so proud that you showed everybody how strong you are,and you have totaly yourself under control,I think that not many people can be so hard for theirself for such a long period of time. You haven’t broke a rule once, that shows how strong you are as a person, and that you are able to control yourself, and that you were last year absolutely not an impulsieve buyer. You have Total control over your old habbits.I had only one,a no buy year of make,up and I sharpened my rules for the month of november. My no buy year for make-up Will go on next year but I want to Sharp my rules a little more for next year,I don’t know exactly how,but I figure that out before december,so I have my rules clear for next year,I want to think about a little more minimalistic lifestyle,so I need to make rules about what I am allowed to buy,and I need to make rules how to declutter all my stuff and clothes, and shoes, and how much I am allowed to keep, but I need Some time to figure that all out,and write my rules on paper, but I want to have everything clear and write down before christmas. And those rules are only for me,not for my husband or Son.Thanks for this beautifull video Hannah,I realy loved it,and every video I see from you makes me think about what I want for next year, just because you show us every video how strong you are,and how well you are doing with your rules for this year. You are a fantastic, amazing, and strong woman Hannah❤️

Have you heard of the headless woman? She is the woman in all the movie posters that only seems to have a body, no head. Joe is the headless cat man on this channel. Also, what time is it in LA? I wake up around 5:30-6:00am for work and typically your video has just gone up. Get some sleep woman, just imagine how scared that poor headless man is to wake up every morning, no head (therefore probably pretty disoriented and scared) praying that you jump back in bed. Keep in mind, I am currently downstairs in the living room writing this because I always wake up a few hours before the man in my bed and while he might have a head I am sure he feels scared and disoriented most mornings too. I really should jump back in bed myself but he complains if I try to watch videos and demands I snuggle for the next few hours. Only issue is he can fall back to sleep while I am wide awake just waiting for him to wake up. Sorry for the completely irrelevant comment. Could you do a makeup and skincare inventory for the new year? Also, a shopping trip to Sephora on the few select items that you have maintained interest in during this no-buy year. I would love to see what you have chosen as standout products.

It seems like Natasha Denonas style is to slowly build and blend with several shades that are just different enough to create more dimension. I definitely see how it can be edited down, but looking at this one just makes me want to reach for my wnw comfort zone and gold singles I have.

I think you are right about that blending with slightly different shades thing. My usual style is to use one color and layer it to get dimension, so maybe that's why I didn't get it (and also her mattes don't really layer like that, as I said in the video)

I had typed a comment yesterday and then my phone shut off. 😞 I always love your reviews because they are detailed and in depth. It’s so much more than “I liked it”, “it looks pretty”... I appreciate hearing all the ins and outs of the product and how it performed, the good and the not so good! You created five pretty looks but my favorite was Day 4. I know exactly what you mean when you say “It’s just an eyeshadow” after using something. It can be hyped up in your mind to be something incredible when you are wanting it, but when you have it, it really is just an eyeshadow palette. Hopefully one that is enjoyed as the power of want has simmered down once it is in your possession.

I agree that when we lust after something and then finally get it, it loses that special status...the anticipation, the thrill of the hunt, or almost that feeling of later on Christmas morning after all the gifts have been opened...but I am happy for you that you got the palette and that you are putting it to good use. I hope you have a wonderful week.

I’ve been wanting the Star palette but could never pull the trigger because of the price. I do have a Natasha five pan palette that I love so much but I think a giant palette, like the star would be too overwhelming and take away the special-ness of the five pan I already own. Love love love this video Hannah. I have this palette (& have never used it). It was a dream of mine to own it, now I do, moving on... to the next thing... like you said it’s just an eyeshadow palette, they are all just eyeshadow palettes.
Like many other people you have inspired me to really look at what I purchase and what I’m trying to attain by making that purchase. I purchase food for sustenance, but why make up? I have a ridiculous amount of FANTASTIC & EXPENSIVE makeup that I adore but haven’t used. I’m embarrassed at the amount of eyeshadow palettes I have, but have never used. I think I’m going to go on a no buy/low buy and base my channel (just started) around using what I have. I thought I needed to have the newest best thing to be up with the cool crowd, but do I really want to be with the cool crowd? Why can’t I have a cooler crowd that is richer (in $$$ and so many other ways)?.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 років тому +1

congrats on starting your channel! I totally agree that you don't have to have all the next new things to be in with any kind of crowd. Makeup is so much about what you do with it, not what brand it is.

I completely agree about the repeat shades, I have the Gold palette and there are 3 shades of almost identical mid-tone browns in it...It makes me mad, because it would be ok in Revolution palette but when you pay sooo much money it just doesn't make any sense. I'm fairly sure it cannot be an artistic decision. I cannot imagine creative meeting in which they are picking colours and out of literally millions of options they decide that what consumer needs are 3 indistinguishable browns. I have suspicion that they have a bunch of shades that are not selling very well, or didn't make the cut as singles stuffed somewhere in the warehouse and then try to get rid of them by putting as many of them into their big palettes...

The crazy thing about lusting after something is that especially when ordering online, i would imagine it to be the best, future HG that will change my life, and then when arrives, it inevitably disappoints (it is measured against fairy dust and dreams after all) and then it get shuffled into my stash. Wendy is so super generous but the star palette is LE i believe, so it cant be that old!

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who has issues with pulling orange in everything. I found one bronzer that I thought worked - ABH Tawny - and it keeps showing up as more orange in photos even though it doesn't seem that way in real life. Why, why does the bronzer universe hate pale people? :)
