Fun fact: In audience tests before the movie was released, EVERY audience all over the world - every country, every culture - was furious that Carmen lived and Diz died.
In the book Dizzy dies right away in the beginning battle but Diz is a man. So its kinda like the book lol.
Ironically, one of very few things that actually followed the book...
Except Dizzy was a dude.

- Well, I can say I agree with all of those audience members, sure it's good story telling to not always have the good guys get good stuff, sometimes bad sh!t happens, but still, I feel like Dizzy should not have died, her and Rico having a future together would have been a better re-write than having her die, although I have no issues with the fly-boy football jerk dying - that was good writing. Sorry he was always a douche so, I feel no sadness in his loss.
Whoever did the visuals on the Space Bugs is an FX hero because they still hold up today

I've seen reactions of this movie all the time: is hilarious how EVERYONE agreed that Carmen is a horrible girlfriend lol 😂
The director, Paul Verhoeven, couldn't understand why the test audiences all hated Carmen (Denise Richards), loved Diz (Dina Meyer), and expressed a preference that Carmen die badly (not heroically) and Diz live.
... i don't agree. she broke up with the guy. its her perogative. he needs to get over it and move on, which he does, finally. carmen ISN'T the villain of this movie.

In the book they not even dating, Johnnie (Juan in the book) had crush for her, but she's only mentioned in memories and isn't any significant character. So it could be worse.
This film is as subtle as a nuke and yet so many people still don't get it
Paul forgot to humanize the bugs and show the humans being worse than usual.
He nailed it in RoboCop but failed it in Starship Troopers.

For a movie made in 1997, the CGI holds up pretty damn well
there are more minitures (spaceships) and practival effects in it as you think. much more than cgi. thats why it looks awesome till today.
this movie is SO ahead of its time. its STILL dope in 2023 with CGI from the 90s on par with today, HOW.
they put a lot of attention to lighting, but also to perception of weight - that is why creatures look /behave so great. Exceptional cgi work for 90's

Carmen was Rico's girlfriend, but Diz was a wife material. She (Diz) actually loved Rico and showed it with her actions.
True story - Eric Bruskotter (actor who placed Breckinridge) and Tami-Adrian George (actress who shot him in the training accident) met on the set of this movie and got married.
You know it's true love when you marry the woman who blew a quarter of your head off. Me and my girlfriend met the same way.

Fun fact: The soldier bugs are a slightly altered version of an early, unused design for the second stage of the Graboid lifecycle in Tremors 2. You can definitely tell looking at both creatures' mandibles.
You can see the same jaw design (more or less) Tremors, Starship Troopers, and the MUTOs from the 2014 Godzilla, all of which were worked on by Amalgamated Dynamics.

Enjoy the movie of course but please, remember those that have sacrificed their lives in past wars in order that you can enjoy your lives in peace. Just to put that in perspective, more Russian lives were lost defeating Nazi Germany than all the American and European Allies lives lost put together.

There's a reason it's called "acting".
Those two machine gunners were the real MVP’s of the outpost. They held the fliers and kept most of the bugs at bay, just to get killed at the end.
The black dude at the end is my favorite character he held off all the bugs and gave them time to escape. You like that you like that huh you want some more!!!??

49:00- Not gonna lie. Best Starship Troopers review I've ever seen. They delved deep into this movie. Acknowledged all the silliness of it all and the hidden messages too.

Starship Troopers is one of the best Sci-Fi films ever made. I'm glad I had the pleasure of viewing it on a sixty foot screen in the theatre with THX Surround Sound when it first came premiered. It's truly a much more unique experience than watching it on a TV.

I think a lot of reactors miss the full experience by not being in a darkened space with a screen which basically engulfs you in the imagery.

It is very different from the book. In fact it is actually the complete opposite of the book.

Yes, he plays villains most capably. A signal year for him, perhaps, was 1983, wherein he essayed two roles of interest - the vile cyborg lord Overdog, in *Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone* opposite Peter Strauss; and "Ham" Tyler, the unprincipled mercenary who, by aiding the Resistance in NBC's miniseries *V,* became a sort of default good guy (and his first role which I shared in as viewer). 😎
Dizzy is the best woman a man could ever hope for
Oh you missed or skipped the reaction to the best part of the scene between Dizzy and Rico, or at least when Raczak gave them an extra 20 minutes. Would have loved to seen your reaction to that scene
The funny blonde haired dude is actor Jake Busey, son of famous actor Gary Busey of "Lethal Weapon", "Silver Bullet", "The Buddy Holly Story", "Point Break", "Predator 2", "The Firm", just to name of few hit films he starred in.
The movie tricks us a bit with the whole "one year earlier" part. If we look carefully at the events in chronological order we see that the Bugs really did attack first.
After the mormons ignored the treaty/exclusion zone. Also, the bugs really did attack (per the book and per the director) and they really did attack several other terran planets, includng zegama beach, per the movie itself.
So many people get messed up by the timeline. Kinda suprising.
I remember watching this movie as 12 years old kid. My mind was blown how good were special effects in movie. Let's be honest they can beat practical effects or CGI quality from some today's DC and MARVEL movies or shows.

Based off of the Novel by Robert Heinlein, where the Mobile Infantry wear powered armor (like Iron Man). Directed by Paul Verhoven. He also directed Robocop, Total Recall, and Basic Instinct. Since you liked his unique (Dutch) perspective in this film, perhaps you would enjoy reacting to his other movies.
Loosely based, Verhoeven already had a script for an SF war movie, then they managed to get the rights to the book. Verhoeven never read the book, though, an assistant basically gave him Cliff Notes.

Verhoeven had decided to make a fascist satire beforehand, but the book is not fascist. So because the movie broadly follows the plot-points and characters of the book he ended up with a non-fascist movie that just had a thin coat of fascist paint on it. That is why we can still feel sympathetic towards the protagonists despite Verhoeven trying to make us dislike them.
Paul Verhoeven was a child in the Netherlands when it was occupied by the Nazis. The Satire is bitingly accurate. 12:55

I’m glad you caught onto the satirical elements and social commentary. Robocop is very similar.
Years go by and Starship Troopers continues to be the best and closest adaptation of a possible Warhammer 40,000 universe. Someone in GW must love this movie, because we're watching a battle between Cadians and Tyranids in life action.

Saw the movie back in 98 and was the first time I saw an issue of White Dwarf being passed around in the audience.
@@jeremiahalonzo It’s just as close, for sure. Warp travel works a bit differently, since it’s not the “pencil-through-paper” theory that Event Horizon utilizes, but I still really like the film and it is pretty much the closest representation we have for it on film, especially if they go through without Gellar Fields. And the ship being modeled after a cathedral feels like it fits right in with the 40k universe too!
Now if Starship Troopers had power armor like they do in the book, that would be definitely pushing it closer to 40k too! 😄

On the contrary. He didn't read the book, true, but he deliberately made the script into a satire of militaristic fascism (which the original novel promotes). Which isn't surprising at all since Verhoeven is Dutch and the Netherlands suffered under fascist Germany. He understood.
@dekai7992 the fact that you think the book promotes fascism tells me you either didn't read the book or have no idea what fascism is. In the book it is a republic where being able to vote and run/serve in public services requires past federal service which doesnt necessarily mean military services, but often hard dangerous tasks, open to all with only limited by age (only limited by being at least 18), not ability, gender, race etc.
It also suggests that those who do not serve still retain all other rights common to liberal democracies today.
None of that would be a thing in a fascist state.

Excellent reaction! This is signature Paul Verhoeven with the satire and violence. Michael Ironside is indeed one of the best Actors and steals every scene he's in 😁
This is based off of the novel Robert A. Heinlein wrote in 1959 and is Military Sci-Fi so it focuses more on the daily life with a few skirmishes in between. The novel spends a lot of time with Rico in Basic Training and then furthering his education while enlisted.
Very different beasts though.
I saw this in theaters with my mom and sister when I was a senior in high-school. So weird that this movie came out as I was seeing recruiters who were visiting the school from the Marine Core, Lol. Also, my sister had her hand over her mouth the most of the movie, she thought it was going to be a PG-13 sci fi action movie

This is a satire movie targeting hyper military patriotism and propaganda. Those around for the Gulf War and Desert Storm understand the satire and spoofing it does. When I first saw this movie as a kid I thought it was pretty stupid but as I grew into adulthood and understood the themes and the digs it was making at the current history of that time, I found it to be pretty brilliant. That last line "It's afraid!!" makes me 😅😅 every time. Most people won't get why it's so funny. But if you lived through the early 90's with the Gulf War I'm sure you do.

I think it's a commentary on military extremism in any era. If you think about when the book was written and all that the world had experienced up until then the commentary is effective in any pointless war setting
It wasn't hyper milirarism or patriotism.
Literally everything was designed to convince people not to join the military. As Rico said, his teacher basically tried to convince him not to do it. His parents tried to bribe and threaten him not to do it. Even at the recruitment office they purposefully put that guy with most of him limbs missing at the front desk to scare people away.
And half the "propaganda" showed people publicly criticising the government and the military.
@bethcushway458 what extremism? There was none. The federation didn't even attack the bugs until the bugs had already wiped out the Mormon colonists AND directly attacked earth with the meteor. They literally waited until the bugs killed millions of people before they went to war.
How is any of that "extreme"?
@@KurNorock And who put the Mormon colony on their planet? We did. They defended their planet against invaders. And we retaliated, and they did. But none of that is the the point of the film. The point of the film is the entire society being focused on military service. You can't be a citizen or vote or have children, unless you serve in the military. The propaganda twisting everything. The propaganda bits are intentionally shot to be badly acted and corny. The zoom in shot of the guy "The only good bug is a dead bug." It's all pushing extremism by saturating the Federation's population with anger and hatred. Even the kids are being given guns by the soldiers to play with and they stomp on bugs.
The movie is so unsubtle about it's themes that most people miss them completely.

Paul Verhoeven had a lot of clout in Hollywood to make the movie. Two sequels and an animated series used the bug designs. The Animated Series is closer to the book.
One of the best satires of fascism ever made. Fantastic little film that's endlessly entertaining even while hitting you over the head with subtext the whole time.
Yet the Federation isn't fascist. There is fascist-inspired window dressing throughout the movie. But that's all a surface level gloss over a libertarian structure.

So here's the story...
5 years before , Verhoeven told the writer Neumeier that he wanted to make a satire of teenagers in 1934 to 1938 germany who were swept up with H's rise and were happy. Both agreed, it would never be made.
Then Neumeier was put on "bug hunt on planet ..." something.. it was a low budget "B" science fiction film. And he remembered the parody and talked to Verhoeven about the film maybe being a vehicle for it.
Then the studio got the rights to "Starship Troopers" attached it to the film, greenlit it, and gave it a bigger budget now that VerHoeven was attached ot it.
VerHoeven incorrectly thought that anything militaristic was fascist ( by his definition, all the Allied powers during WW2 were also fascist). He read 2 chapters of the book and went "Booooring" and handed over writing to Neumeier completely. But Neumeier actually liked the book. And he dropped large parts of the book into the movie faithfully without strawmanning them (the high school class for example). He did combine Colonel Dubois and Radchek and that's typical in adaptions.
The film we got was not the satire VerHoeven thought it was-- because the book's material shined through.
So we got to see a Constitutional Republic with a limited voter Franchise, dressed up in fascist costumes and a lot of messages about personal responsibility and the importance of responsible citizens to a well functioning society. Which rang true with many.
@@macmcleod1188 It was absolutely the satire they thought it was. It couldn't be a more clear satire of fascism and every second of the film is smacking you right in the face with the incredibly hyper-fascist society they live in.

It's a satire of militarism. But in the real world, the military is needed to avoid situations like Ukraine.
Fairhaven was traumatized as a young child and came to view militarism and fascism as the same thing. They're not.
In order to make a satire of fascism, the movie would have had to have actual fascist philosophical elements and not just fascist costumes.
Paul Verhoeven is an interesting director that is not afraid of cheese, sleaze and social commentary in his films. "Starship Troopers", Robocop", "Basic Instinct" and "Total Recall" are just some of the better known films, but I would say, "Flesh + Blood", "The Hollow Man", "Black Book", "Elle", "Benedetta" and the much maligned and misunderstood film "Showgirls" are also good examples of Verhoeven's style of work. Critics savaged "Showgirls", but I think they were expecting a serious Busby-Berkeley style musical, rather than Verhoeven's 'cheese, sleaze and social/political commentary of show biz and schlock films.
Great movie, I really enjoyed it at the time and I even have the special Blu-ray edition of the movie. It was also heavily criticized for some scenes of nudity and explicit violence, which in some countries was censored. This movie is on my list of best movies. of history 😊

I love this movie. I saw Starship Troopers in theaters when this came out. I was 12 at that time.
During the exit polls from the preliminary screenings, so many people and especially the female audience members said that they should have saved Diz and killed off Denise Richards' character. She was univerally disliked.
Not sure if it was said in an earlier comment, but the Arachnids are not the innocent victims in this. They are the aggressor in the war as they struck the first blow. The Federation / Humanity are the ones defending themselves.
For context; a group of mormon colonists went to an Arachnid world, which the Federation deemed that entire area as a forbidden area of space. They ignored the Federation's warning, attempted colonizing... and the bugs wiped them out. The Federation shrugged at the act, since as far as the Federation was concerned, it warned them that if they entered that area of space, they would be completely on their own and the Federation would do nothing to protect or aid them. So when they got wiped out, the Federation basically just shrugged its shoulders.
The Arachnids then sent the Asteroid to Earth (the one that hit Buenos Aires), the Federation took that as an Act of War and then started attacking the Arachnid Worlds as a response to the asteroid/first attack. They constructed various defenses in the solar system after the Asteroid as well which protects it from further asteroid attacks or potential invasions by the Arachnids.
So while the bugs are 'on the defense', so to speak. They dealt the first blow.
The war was not a war over resources. It's a war due to a bunch of stupid colonists.
I highly recommend the book. The guy in charge of the movie did it his way, while barely keeping to things in the book. It's not horrible, but it gives the wrong impression about the Federation in my opinion.
For the whole citizen thing. It's not anything truly special. The only 'right' a citizen has that a non-citizen does, is they're allowed to partake in the Federation's politics, like the right to vote or have any kind of say in its politics. That's all. That's the only extra thing a citizen has. Also, you can only be a citizen 'after' your service. So while you are still in service, you are not yet a citizen.
And you can drop out of the military at any moment provided that you aren't in the middle of combat. The only consequence for quitting, you can't be a citizen, ever.
The Federation itself has very little power over non-citizens too, and I mean basically no power over non-citizens. The few things they can do are more emergency measure type of stuff (like disaster relief, etc)
Also, anyone can join Federal Service no matter their disability or mental problem. The Federation is required by their own laws that if someone for example applied but they were blind and deaf, the Federation 'will' find them a job to do. They cannot refuse anyone except for only 1 reason. Missing an arm? You can join. Paralyzed from the neck down? You can join. They will find you a job to do. They cannot refuse you due to any of those reasons.
The only way for someone to be denied Federal Service is that the person is unable to understand the oath they take when joining for Federal Service. That is the only way they can deny someone.
Had kind of forgotten that Seth Gilliam was the one who blew the nuke in the caves near the end of movie...he went on to play Father Gabriel in The Walking Dead...
All the cast agreed to the nude shower scene on the condition that Verhoeven and the camera-crew were naked as well. They agreed. :)

Yes, it was a political satire with great practical effects. I loved how they talked about the difference between a citizen and a civilian and the equal rights between sexes, even to the point of co-showers and fighting on the battlefield together.
True but of course the reality is different..female soldiers can't carry the same weight in gear that the male soldiers can so it has to bypass those realities.

I've seen this first film in the series about 80 times so far, the first few days I watched it 3 times a day ... my family has seen it "only" 50 times :)
This movie initially did not do that great in the theaters and the reviews tended to be very bad (IMHO a lot of the critics unfairly took thing literally and did not get the satire and parody aspect of the movie.). For some reason this movie did great in videos, the poster was cool and stood out in a video store, word of mouth also spread because most people that initially rented the movie (like yours truly) did not expect much from it but instead a surprisingly fun and entertaining movie.
The movie did great on video because the audience for this movie aren't movie critics. They're movie fans. More specifically, they're scifi movie fans. And those fans read the book. I'd expect that most movie critics hadn't. And many of those critics who had read the book didn't understand it. Neither did Verhoeven.
The Military contracts are for 6 years. In an emergency they can call you back to active duty. Aug 1, 1967 - July 31st 1973. In the book they are tested and put into which unit they think is the best fit. It might not be the Military, but it is still Federal Service. In the Book they dropped to the planet in a cocoon which burned away in layers until they slowed down enough and then parachuted to the ground. Robert A. Heinlein is one of the best ever Sci-Fi authors. I took a lot of my philosophy from his writings.
This is one of my top five movies of all time and watching this review with you guys made it fun all over again thank you.

Starship Troopers was like a lightning in the bottle moment for 90's sci-fi, till this day people have no idea if it is supposed to be satirical or not, and goddamn the vfx was just insane for its time, even to this day, it looks really good.

The book is more serious, the movie basically only gets a "fascist undertones satire" label because of the aesthetics of the uniforms and such. The message many take is "well maybe the bugs aren't the bad guys" but thats blatantly false, they're a brutal, massacring race willing to orbitally bombard civilian targets.
No that asteroid would take millions of years to traverse the galaxy, so unless the bugs were aiming at the dinosaurs it was the government taking advantage of a natural disaster to start a war.
Your comments on war hit home with me. I was five and in West Germany as an Air Force brat during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The adults were suddenly mean--and we slept in the fallout shelters for two weeks, one packed suitcase per person. Even the infants wore dog tags so that our crushed and charred bodies could be identified. NEO (Non-combatant Evacuation Operation) was not practical when the USA and the USSR teetered on the brink of nuclear war.
Then there was my National Guard Signal Company during Operation Iraqi Freedom II--about a sixth of my unit was female. My squad leader and platoon sergeant were female. We were brothers and sisters. I got to teach my platoon the art of knife fighting.

One of the best subversively political satires in recent memory. Amazing that this movie was made before 9/11 because it totally feels like a critique of the US post-9/11.
It is a critique of fascist, overmilitarized regimes. If you think this movie resembles post 9/11 US, that says a lot about the US.
Seriously! The sudden attack, the way enlistment went from a way to pay for college to war in the blink of an eye. I really got 9-11 vibes from this.

@@KurNorock the beginning where the teacher talks about the veterans taking control is a direct reference to the Nazi street gangs being made up of German WW1 veterans... Verhoeven has spoken repeatedly about how the society in this film is inspired by the Nazis.

He made a great satire film critiquing a straw man story he imagined from a book he never read, and essentially landed on making a faithful adaptation that mirrored the same messages the book made. How Heinlein, and in particular starship troopers, got this right wing or fascist label is beyond me.

Robert Heinlein wrote the book, the movie is an homage to the book. The book was about the need to change politics and the system to survive a war for the survival of humankind. In the book the Mobile Infantry were in armored suits with jet packs and their own nuke launchers and rarely worked with another person. To become a citizen you either had to retire from Federal Service or become so injured you could no longer serve and then you could vote. This was a direct nod to the politicians sending others to war and not having to serve and fight themselves, and people who had never been to war, voting for people and electing them who would start wars. A very political book for its time, it was a direct response to the draft and the US sending soldiers to war who didn't need to go fight. It was published in 1959 and just a few short years later the US was in Viet Nam. The movie gets the vibe, but not really a movie about the book, more a movie about the ideas from the book. Done in an over the top way and quite funny in some scenes. Great reaction and thanks for sharing. Chris

Well that's good except for the part where the book very very explicitly states that federal service does not equate to military service. Been a while since I read it but if memory serves when asked the recruiting sergent says the only people who can't get the vote are those too mentally handicapped to understand what they would be signing up for and even (paraphrasing somewhat) "if a man came in here with no legs and was blind in both eyes I would have to find him something to do, probably sexing caterpillars by hand or something" the important thing was it had to be at least 2 years, you could quit at any time. But if you didn't do 2 years you weren't a citizen and couldn't try again.

I love that you can see that this is far enough into the future that humans are evolving. Faster, stronger, smarter, more athletic, can take more punishment. It's something a lot of people miss.

I loved your commentary on the movie, but hearing your description of being a military family was totally legit. I didn't know how awesome the bond truly was amongst the service members of all branches until I jumped in to the Marine Corps. You are spot on. The book from which this movie is made (Starship Troopers) was written in 1959, and is worth reading.
