I used the Anteka Switch Axe for a little bit until I started grinding for Nargacuga parts, but once I got enough for the Narga Switch Axe, I immediately started using that one. Poison Phial is a little oddball, but it's interesting to use. Plus, the 40% Affinity boost is kinda neat, and helps stagger monsters a little faster.

It'd be great if you didn't have to use sword mode all the time to achieve optimal DPS... the weapon may as well be called StuckSword considering how it's always been used.

@@atlasthechamp82 Alchemy Style does just that. You can switch between axe and sword mode SO easily, starting a combo in sword mode and finishing it in axe mode.

The grand slasher from brachy is on par if not better than hell blade, more attack and more white. Hellblade has natural white, a bit more of blast and 5 percent affinity plus charges the arts faster but most of those bonuses are not that big with 10 more attack and triple the white the brachy weapon has.
one of my favourites in this game is the Akantor Divider, has decent green, 250 raw and 35% Affinity, if you use this toghether with Blunt Power, Crit Boost and the Energy Charge lvl Hunting Art (fully reloads your gauge as well as giving you a 30% affinity boost, so the Akantor SA would have a whopiing 65% affinity with this!) you can do some massive damage. yes, it has a dragon phial and not a power one, but even then most monsters ae atleast slightly weak to dragon, and just the raw power of this thing in combnation with the amount of boosted crits you're going to do make this thing so much fun.
This weapon works really well with the deviant narcauga set too, almost 100% crit with crit boost. Only need to find me a blunt talisman though but RNGesus has been mean
I agree with you. With a crit boost build the Akantor Divider can deal masive damage abusing of the high motion value axe attacks (Overhead slash alone is 48 MV, and have to point out that the roundhouse finisher of the hack'n slash now hits 3 times dealing 95 MV in one single move!).
so I saw your video one time and you said "the starter weapons have gotten better" so i've sttuck to the switch axe . Apparently its finished product will have 230 attack and I actually enjoyed the para it comes with because you just completely punish the monster swiping away at it. Your guide helped me a lot because I only ever used mostly LS and Lance.
One axe that I'm looking forward to, while it isn't out yet, is the Pirate Axe J. 200 Raw, a small bit of blue, Power Phial, 3 slots, and is a Pirate Axe. Probably the best 3-slot weapon I've seen; only downside is it's not actually available yet.
My favorite is the Moon Shredder (Gold Rathian) It has 220 attack, 14 poison( a bit low but it is only a nice addition to me) and decent white sharpness (with sharpness plus 2) Together with my Esurient R set i gain attack up L and sharpness plus 2.
I just went for my Baraq Defiance because I'll end making the Hellblade Axe anyway so for now my Baraq Defiance is killing it. The Dreadqueen one is my favorite poison axe yes. Good list.
Exoskeleton Chopper is my favourite. Sure damage is a bit low, but both axe and sword mode can stun. Use sword mode with aerial style and you increase chance for stun. Has literally been a lifesaviour many times.
Lune Shredder. 220 raw, 18 poison and power phial. Can have blue to white sharpness, depending on armor skills. However, no slots. Definitely something to consider.
adept switch axe is one of my favorite weapon-style combo, i just reached the hr break and when i need a good electric switch axe the voltiac axe is always there for me

As I like Para on all my stuff, I'd say the Exoskeleton Axe will be one of the Switch Axes I'll be using end-game. Also instead of the Hellblade Axe I'd roll with Teostra's Arx for the Blast Elemental Phial for even more explosions and one slot to boot.
I'm still in low rank, but I'm finding the Wycademy Axe to be pretty amazing. Having Blast early game is huge, and Element phial cranks it up that much more; It staggers and shreds monsters like crazy. It also gives a nice defense boost as well. I've found through research that at higher ranks it has high raw and hardly goes past Green, which it has a lot of, so Bludgeoning could work wonders for it alongside Bombardier, Airbourne if you use Aerial Style, or just good ol' Atk Up. I definitely think the Wycademy Axe will be a mainstay in my arsenal, for sure. It looks really cool too :3 "It's power will rip Monsters a new one... for science." XD
My list is almost kinda similiar to yours xD - Deviant Rathalos...that dark red dragon design is irresistable - Deviant Nargacuga, same reason as yours (although i went with normal nargacuga for that 100% affinity for fun sometimes) - Kusha's, nice stats, the best-looking scythe SA imo - Deviant Dinovald, same reason as yours, although i dun really like the design, but hey great sharpness, atk, affinity and a blast status, why not (back in mh4g it woulda been teostra's) - deviant jinouga's, because i'm totally biased with jinouga since he's the reason i started playing MH, my best and most favorite monster!! p.s. love conqueress's design...ALOT but not that great to use...unless it was a fashion-run i'd switch to this lol
I'm more partial to the Splish Splax because it's easier to farm Royal Ludroff than it is Mitzisune. It gets 10 more raw damage (210), 5 less affinity (5%), and a little more elemental (30 water). Sharpness is a bit weaker on the white end, but stronger on the blue. Still, you'll be wanting sharpness + 2 for either if your facing up against certain armored monsters like G.Rathian.
I'm so happy that the lagombi got good weapons this time around, it was so disappointing in 4u, and low, high, and g rank had the same look, but I don't know if that's changed
Here are my suggestions for non-Power phial Switch Axes- For Fire damage, you'll want to go with the Gigant Burst, from the Uragaan. Without Sharpness +2, it just has a sliver of blue, so you can go ahead and fight in green with Bludgeoner. It's also got 210 attack and gives +16 defense. For Thunder damage, the Megavolt Axe from Hyper Lagiacrus is probably your best bet. 190 attack, decent blue, 35 thunder and a slot. For Water damage, the Vavoom Vindication from the Hyper Kecha Wacha has 190 attack, decent blue sharpness and 40 water, making it king, though the Vavoom Verdict (from the regular Kecha Wacha) has just green sharpness (good for Bludgeoner) and 24 water, so it's your call. For Ice, you're probably going to go with Notched Oppressor from the Hyper Zamtrios, since there aren't many good Ice SAs with Element phials. 200 attack, -10% affinity, 34 ice. You'll want to pair it with Critical Eye +2 or +3 if you want to use Elemental Crit. For Dragon damage, the Mundus Regius from the Worn Switch Axe line is a good call. It's got decent blue without Sharpness+2 and great white with Sharpness+2. Its attack is pretty sad for a final form weapon at 130, but 60 dragon is just stupidly high, plus it's got two slots for some versatility. On top of that, it looks awesome since it consists of not one, but TWO power saws! For Poison, you'll want the Chief Bruiser Axe from the lowly Jaggi and Ioprey. 36 Poison even in axe mode and three slots makes it very versatile. Its Sharpness is a bit lacking, though, so Razor Sharp is a must. It's got 3 slots, so there's that, Instead, you can try the Night's Crescent from the Nargacuga. It's got 190 attack, natural white and 40% affinity, so when paired with Critical Eye +3 and being under Energy Charge III, you're at 100% affinity, and thus you're dealing crits every single hit, regardless of which mode you're in. This means that in this state it has 237 attack with white sharpness - and with Critical Boost, that attack is up to 266! The poison damage from the phial is just an added bonus, really. For Exhaust phials, the Grunhart from the Hyper Duramboros is your go-to. 220 attack, great white with Sharpness+2 and 40 exhaust when in sword mode. Plus it has a slot! It'll be neat KOing your foe with a Switch Axe, since exhaust damage to the head is basically stun damage. If you want raw power over exhaust but also want exhaust, the Rex Gnasher has your back. 220 attack, 25 exhaust with the phial, natural white sharpness and -10% affinity. For Sleep, you have only two choices, the Mega Rhipadon from the Hyper Plesioth - which is a Power phial, or the Somniferous Talon from Malfestio, which is Element. That's my list on top of gaijinhunter's.
May I ask what kept the Cosmic Skalve out of this list? sure it only has 10 dragon, but 190 attack 2 slots and ALL the blue sharpness you could ever hope for.
Well I got a angry letter from PETA, aerial switch axe is apparently pure monster abuse. Also sweet list I know what to look out for but I am making the petrified Axe work. Its nice when you get it up there.
My personal favourite (as of now) must be the Colossus Axe with a simple Handicraft +2 and Attack (L) set. The set itself doesn't really provide too many stats (obviously), but what you essentially end up with is a Switch Axe with 265 physical and 26 ice, on top of white sharpness and a power phial. It's probably not the greatest in terms of dps - especially since you basically NEED to go with striker style in order to keep the white -, but it is decent enough, and running the maths quickly, you end up with almost 350 physical AR while maintaining the white (not counting the elemental dmg). Slap the 20% bonus damage from Demon Riot III on to that, to bring it up to 420 physical AR; and another 20% from the Power Phial (assuming they stack additively) boosts you up to almost 500AR. If I'm not mistaken, the striker style also boosts your sword attacks slightly (or was that a different weapon?), so you can basically get the 500AR off of a weapon without any problems. The only two real drawbacks of this weapon are that you need Sharpness +2 to unlock the white, and you have to deal with that 20% negative affinity (so basically you'll deal 25% less dmg in 20% of the cases; so around 5% less dmg). Although you could argue that the Energy Charge III completely removes that drawback, technically the argument of less affinity than a 0% affinity weapon still stands. Compared to the Daidalos Axe you end up with the following stats: 265 dmg (Colossus with Attack L and Sharpness+2) vs 290 dmg (Daidalos with Attack L and Bludgeoner). White Sharpness (1.32 multiplier) vs Green Sharpness (1.05 multiplier) -> 350 AR vs 305 AR. Assuming a 40% bonus (from Weaponart and Power Phial) for both, you'd end up with 490 AR vs 427 AR. Now the Daidalos has 20% more affinity, and in my set, I use Crit Eye +2 (Hayabusa Feather) so I'd end up with 40% affinity difference between the two axes, which translates into 10% affinity (+2,5% dmg) vs 50% affinity (+12,5% dmg) respectively. Translated back to numbers, that's 502 AR vs 480 AR. What turns visible rather quickly here is that the Colossus Axe (with no fancy set) is technically superior to the Daidalos Axe *as long* as you maintain your white. If you drop back to Blue with the Colossus, you suddenly only have 318 AR left, whereas the Daidalos (with bludgeoner) still maintains 295 AR. Considering the total, you'd end up with 456 AR with the Colossus, compared to 465 AR on the Daidalos Axe. Also worth noting here is that the Daidalos has about the same amount of Green, that the Colossus has White (with Handicraft +2). TL;DR It's a close tie between the Colossus and the Daidalos when considering only the raw values, but I think the Colossus has higher damage as long as you can maintain the white sharpness - which is entirely possible against hyper monsters.
Coupled with Energy Charge III, the Giant's Axe/Colossus's Axe (Gammoth) becomes pretty ridiculous in terms of power. It has 230 raw, 26 ice, and only -20% affinity, which is completely mitigated by Energy Charge's affinity boost! It's one of my favorites.
I know this SA isn't in the game because they don't have the Barroth in this version, but my go to weapon that I used in almost 90% of my hunts was the Assault Axe, when fully upgraded it did SO much raw damage and had a para sword file in it, I remember that with attack up med or large it did at least 1000 damage, the only bad thing about it was that it had -10 affinity
The Hororohoruru(Malfestio) switchaxe has been carrying me throughout this entire game ever since the moment I made it, I've never felt the need to switch it out.

Kinda surprised that there aren't more teostra weapons on the lists, I know that there a complete pain in the ass to make, but i'd say Teostra's Castle is a really good weapon as well, just got a worn SA tonight (wanted a SnS, but whatever), it is elemental, but i don't think it matters as much with blast as with fire, water etc.
Gaijin, Important note about switch axe that i have noticed. When the axe is in Orange sharpness, even while in Sword Mode, it will bounce. It has happened to me everytime I am in Orange Sharpness. I do not know if its a bug or part of the game, but The Swax will bounce in Sword Mode, during Orange Sharpness.
I feel that the only way they could make elemental phial SAs viable is if they give them high raw than the power phial ones but slightly less element. That way they're equal. As an example, a 200 raw power phial with 22 element would equal a 220 elemental phial with 20 element. Status phials, though, would need a huge buff to how much status they do and always triggering the status instead of the 1/3 chance for them to become viable.
I would include the grand slasher in the list, its a pain in the ass to make but its worth it. 210 attack, power phial, long white with sharpness +2 (Much longer than Hellblade) and 26 blast.
Teostra's castle, if you can find a worn switch axe somehow, I highly recommend making it. It has pretty decent blue and a whopping 40 blast damage as well as an Element phial. So if you bother to do the math, this axe will do quite a bit of damage in sword mode. Although it does 170 raw, the blast damage it can do should more than make up for the low raw damage it has.
It synergizes very badly with the Switch Axe motion values, attack speed and its Hunter Arts. Trading this much consisent, easily multipliable raw for some early burst is barely worth it, even in Hunt-a-thons, and against Hypers or Deviants it wont hold a candle to good ol' raw power.
Crystal Beard SA, is a personal favorite, crap ton of green making it good for Bludgeoneer, 220 attack, power phial, +10 defense yet only a 5% affinity which can be fixed via hunters drink and the affinity up skill. The defense boost, as small as it is, has probably saved my life on more occasions than I care to admit, and it looks pretty great as well.
So I noticed you mentioned the power and element phials, but what about Exhaust or Poison phials? I think it would make an interesting vid to gloss over how the phials work in Gen
I am not that far... as in I barely hit HR4, but right now, I've been enjoying ParaMOutning with Aerial SA, so my weapons of choices so far has been Grim Cat and the Exoskeleton Axe. Makes me wonder what future para weapons will come up.
Why the Diadalos Axe instead of Akantor? Is it because of the Dragon phial? Bonus question; Are you planning to doing LBG/HBG tutorials at all? I would really want to know more about all the new ammo.
I'm playing the Hidden Axe which has 190atk, 40% affinity, 2 slots and poison phials. With the silvernarga armor set and Energy Charge II Hunter Art I get 80% affinity and crit boost which is NUTS.
I actually think the Aksa Switch is better if you have Sharpness +2. It has way more white sharpness and 10 more raw power. Unless you really want the two slots that is.
Why not the Anat Karnim Ahtal-Ka Swaxe? 330 attack, 3 slots, +60 defense, power phial, good chunk of purple sharpness (good with sharpness jewel to cut sharpness loss in half), and it looks awesome to swing around.
Does anyone know any good dragon switch axes? As an example, I was looking at the Gore Magala and Shagaru Magala switch axes, and was conflicted if I should invest in these weapons (as well as not being sure wherever to keep with the regular Gore switch axe, or go down the Shagaru path).
If you're not shy about using an Exhaust phial (which I find to be actually pretty good in this installment), I recommend to you the Reckless Hatchet/Vine Splitter. This is one that I wound up using all the way through low rank up through high rank and it ends up with 240 raw, -20% affinity (easily cancelled out with Energy Charge II and even overtaken with Energy Charge III), and a large amount of green sharpness with a small amount of blue. With Sharpness +1 it gets more blue with a sliver of white, with +2 it has a much more manageable amount. If you don't want to use it with Sharpness, I would definitely say you could get away with using Bludgeoning with it.
Nothing this time about that magnificent Savage Jho axe? I really liked it on 4U, especially on the fact that it has Dragon Phial, so I can Axe Mode 24/7
am i the only person who rarely uses sword mode ? i use guild style with some of the basic arts for evasion. dash juice. trap the monster and just a loop combo. actually clears monsters pretty fast.

I like pairing the Infernal Axe with Death Stench armor, especially for fighting the Margalas. Gem them up with frenzy resistance decorations, and go to town
Wondering why you don't have Night's Crescent on this list. 190 atk, 40% affinity, 2 slots, and white sharpness. Paired with the meta blademaster set it is the highest dps switch axe.

I usually use axe until I know the monster will stand still long enough to not need to re position all the time which the forwards x is dope for

Brachy weapons are not really bad actually, keeping the blue Sharpness is easier than the Hellblade Glavenus weapons.

In terms of looking like scythes, I do enjoy the Eisenleib/geist. I'm actually looking for a better/more powerful switch axe, can you advise?
I'm more partial to the Splish Splax because it's easier to farm Royal Ludroff than it is Mitzisune. It gets 10 more raw damage (210), 5 less affinity (5%), and a little more elemental (30 water). Sharpness is a bit weaker on the white end, but stronger on the blue. Still, you'll be wanting sharpness + 2 for either if your facing up against certain armored monsters like G.Rathian.
I'm so happy that the lagombi got good weapons this time around, it was so disappointing in 4u, and low, high, and g rank had the same look, but I don't know if that's changed
Here are my suggestions for non-Power phial Switch Axes-
For Fire damage, you'll want to go with the Gigant Burst, from the Uragaan. Without Sharpness +2, it just has a sliver of blue, so you can go ahead and fight in green with Bludgeoner. It's also got 210 attack and gives +16 defense.
For Thunder damage, the Megavolt Axe from Hyper Lagiacrus is probably your best bet. 190 attack, decent blue, 35 thunder and a slot.
For Water damage, the Vavoom Vindication from the Hyper Kecha Wacha has 190 attack, decent blue sharpness and 40 water, making it king, though the Vavoom Verdict (from the regular Kecha Wacha) has just green sharpness (good for Bludgeoner) and 24 water, so it's your call.
For Ice, you're probably going to go with Notched Oppressor from the Hyper Zamtrios, since there aren't many good Ice SAs with Element phials. 200 attack, -10% affinity, 34 ice. You'll want to pair it with Critical Eye +2 or +3 if you want to use Elemental Crit.
For Dragon damage, the Mundus Regius from the Worn Switch Axe line is a good call. It's got decent blue without Sharpness+2 and great white with Sharpness+2. Its attack is pretty sad for a final form weapon at 130, but 60 dragon is just stupidly high, plus it's got two slots for some versatility. On top of that, it looks awesome since it consists of not one, but TWO power saws!
For Poison, you'll want the Chief Bruiser Axe from the lowly Jaggi and Ioprey. 36 Poison even in axe mode and three slots makes it very versatile. Its Sharpness is a bit lacking, though, so Razor Sharp is a must. It's got 3 slots, so there's that,
Instead, you can try the Night's Crescent from the Nargacuga. It's got 190 attack, natural white and 40% affinity, so when paired with Critical Eye +3 and being under Energy Charge III, you're at 100% affinity, and thus you're dealing crits every single hit, regardless of which mode you're in. This means that in this state it has 237 attack with white sharpness - and with Critical Boost, that attack is up to 266! The poison damage from the phial is just an added bonus, really.
For Exhaust phials, the Grunhart from the Hyper Duramboros is your go-to. 220 attack, great white with Sharpness+2 and 40 exhaust when in sword mode. Plus it has a slot! It'll be neat KOing your foe with a Switch Axe, since exhaust damage to the head is basically stun damage.
If you want raw power over exhaust but also want exhaust, the Rex Gnasher has your back. 220 attack, 25 exhaust with the phial, natural white sharpness and -10% affinity.
For Sleep, you have only two choices, the Mega Rhipadon from the Hyper Plesioth - which is a Power phial, or the Somniferous Talon from Malfestio, which is Element.
That's my list on top of gaijinhunter's.
May I ask what kept the Cosmic Skalve out of this list? sure it only has 10 dragon, but 190 attack 2 slots and ALL the blue sharpness you could ever hope for.

Well I got a angry letter from PETA, aerial switch axe is apparently pure monster abuse. Also sweet list I know what to look out for but I am making the petrified Axe work. Its nice when you get it up there.
My personal favourite (as of now) must be the Colossus Axe with a simple Handicraft +2 and Attack (L) set.
The set itself doesn't really provide too many stats (obviously), but what you essentially end up with is a Switch Axe with 265 physical and 26 ice, on top of white sharpness and a power phial. It's probably not the greatest in terms of dps - especially since you basically NEED to go with striker style in order to keep the white -, but it is decent enough, and running the maths quickly, you end up with almost 350 physical AR while maintaining the white (not counting the elemental dmg). Slap the 20% bonus damage from Demon Riot III on to that, to bring it up to 420 physical AR; and another 20% from the Power Phial (assuming they stack additively) boosts you up to almost 500AR. If I'm not mistaken, the striker style also boosts your sword attacks slightly (or was that a different weapon?), so you can basically get the 500AR off of a weapon without any problems.
The only two real drawbacks of this weapon are that you need Sharpness +2 to unlock the white, and you have to deal with that 20% negative affinity (so basically you'll deal 25% less dmg in 20% of the cases; so around 5% less dmg). Although you could argue that the Energy Charge III completely removes that drawback, technically the argument of less affinity than a 0% affinity weapon still stands.
Compared to the Daidalos Axe you end up with the following stats:
265 dmg (Colossus with Attack L and Sharpness+2) vs 290 dmg (Daidalos with Attack L and Bludgeoner).
White Sharpness (1.32 multiplier) vs Green Sharpness (1.05 multiplier) -> 350 AR vs 305 AR.
Assuming a 40% bonus (from Weaponart and Power Phial) for both, you'd end up with 490 AR vs 427 AR.
Now the Daidalos has 20% more affinity, and in my set, I use Crit Eye +2 (Hayabusa Feather) so I'd end up with 40% affinity difference between the two axes, which translates into 10% affinity (+2,5% dmg) vs 50% affinity (+12,5% dmg) respectively.
Translated back to numbers, that's 502 AR vs 480 AR.
What turns visible rather quickly here is that the Colossus Axe (with no fancy set) is technically superior to the Daidalos Axe *as long* as you maintain your white. If you drop back to Blue with the Colossus, you suddenly only have 318 AR left, whereas the Daidalos (with bludgeoner) still maintains 295 AR.
Considering the total, you'd end up with 456 AR with the Colossus, compared to 465 AR on the Daidalos Axe.
Also worth noting here is that the Daidalos has about the same amount of Green, that the Colossus has White (with Handicraft +2).
TL;DR It's a close tie between the Colossus and the Daidalos when considering only the raw values, but I think the Colossus has higher damage as long as you can maintain the white sharpness - which is entirely possible against hyper monsters.
Overlord IV have you thought of factoring in food skills, power and talon charms, might seed, and mega demondrug?
Coupled with Energy Charge III, the Giant's Axe/Colossus's Axe (Gammoth) becomes pretty ridiculous in terms of power. It has 230 raw, 26 ice, and only -20% affinity, which is completely mitigated by Energy Charge's affinity boost! It's one of my favorites.
I know this SA isn't in the game because they don't have the Barroth in this version, but my go to weapon that I used in almost 90% of my hunts was the Assault Axe, when fully upgraded it did SO much raw damage and had a para sword file in it, I remember that with attack up med or large it did at least 1000 damage, the only bad thing about it was that it had -10 affinity

Kinda surprised that there aren't more teostra weapons on the lists, I know that there a complete pain in the ass to make, but i'd say Teostra's Castle is a really good weapon as well, just got a worn SA tonight (wanted a SnS, but whatever), it is elemental, but i don't think it matters as much with blast as with fire, water etc.

Raw is low but it has good sharpness and 50 thunder for a power type is just disgusting.
Gaijin, Important note about switch axe that i have noticed. When the axe is in Orange sharpness, even while in Sword Mode, it will bounce. It has happened to me everytime I am in Orange Sharpness. I do not know if its a bug or part of the game, but The Swax will bounce in Sword Mode, during Orange Sharpness.
I feel that the only way they could make elemental phial SAs viable is if they give them high raw than the power phial ones but slightly less element. That way they're equal. As an example, a 200 raw power phial with 22 element would equal a 220 elemental phial with 20 element. Status phials, though, would need a huge buff to how much status they do and always triggering the status instead of the 1/3 chance for them to become viable.
I would include the grand slasher in the list, its a pain in the ass to make but its worth it.

The amount of dps you can do with a switch-axe then go into sword mode is just amazing
Teostra's castle, if you can find a worn switch axe somehow, I highly recommend making it. It has pretty decent blue and a whopping 40 blast damage as well as an Element phial. So if you bother to do the math, this axe will do quite a bit of damage in sword mode. Although it does 170 raw, the blast damage it can do should more than make up for the low raw damage it has.
It synergizes very badly with the Switch Axe motion values, attack speed and its Hunter Arts. Trading this much consisent, easily multipliable raw for some early burst is barely worth it, even in Hunt-a-thons, and against Hypers or Deviants it wont hold a candle to good ol' raw power.
Crystal Beard SA, is a personal favorite, crap ton of green making it good for Bludgeoneer, 220 attack, power phial, +10 defense yet only a 5% affinity which can be fixed via hunters drink and the affinity up skill. The defense boost, as small as it is, has probably saved my life on more occasions than I care to admit, and it looks pretty great as well.
I have a relation of love and hate with the SA's explosion: it either throw me far away or it makes me jump and topple the monster.
I wish they could've made a Hunter Art to make Axe Mode more usable because it's so much fun to play as well.
Regular nargacuga with status attack up crit stat chain crit and crit eye 3 and eatting for speacialist just dominates

As someone who loves the switch axe, I think power phial combined with the biased hunter arts takes away from the weapon's awesome concept.
Personal favorite was the Chameleos SWAXE too. Too bad it's raw damage is unfortunately low.

I used the obsidian axe all through high rank. It has dragon phials. But I still found it pretty useful.
I am not that far... as in I barely hit HR4, but right now, I've been enjoying ParaMOutning with Aerial SA, so my weapons of choices so far has been Grim Cat and the Exoskeleton Axe. Makes me wonder what future para weapons will come up.

I'm playing the Hidden Axe which has 190atk, 40% affinity, 2 slots and poison phials. With the silvernarga armor set and Energy Charge II Hunter Art I get 80% affinity and crit boost which is NUTS.
One sa that I discovered recently and absolutely enjoyed was the cosmic skalve
I actually think the Aksa Switch is better if you have Sharpness +2. It has way more white sharpness and 10 more raw power. Unless you really want the two slots that is.

Why not the Anat Karnim Ahtal-Ka Swaxe? 330 attack, 3 slots, +60 defense, power phial, good chunk of purple sharpness (good with sharpness jewel to cut sharpness loss in half), and it looks awesome to swing around.
Daora's Janah is awesome especially when fighting monsters like Rajang or Zinogre.

Does anyone know any good dragon switch axes? As an example, I was looking at the Gore Magala and Shagaru Magala switch axes, and was conflicted if I should invest in these weapons (as well as not being sure wherever to keep with the regular Gore switch axe, or go down the Shagaru path).

If you're not shy about using an Exhaust phial (which I find to be actually pretty good in this installment), I recommend to you the Reckless Hatchet/Vine Splitter. This is one that I wound up using all the way through low rank up through high rank and it ends up with 240 raw, -20% affinity (easily cancelled out with Energy Charge II and even overtaken with Energy Charge III), and a large amount of green sharpness with a small amount of blue. With Sharpness +1 it gets more blue with a sliver of white, with +2 it has a much more manageable amount. If you don't want to use it with Sharpness, I would definitely say you could get away with using Bludgeoning with it.

am i the only person who rarely uses sword mode ? i use guild style with some of the basic arts for evasion. dash juice. trap the monster and just a loop combo. actually clears monsters pretty fast.
