I would agree! I think going with the classic charcoal with the ideal choice for this mod and console. I have been really enjoying playing the 64 with all these mods as well. While recording footage for this, I spent way too much time playing it and even my wife overhead the Diddy Kong Racing music and had to come race a few laps!
Love the mods on this--especially that light up jewel front and center! And the HDMI looks really, really nice! Nicely done. Plus, I always love to see the consoles get cleaned up; that before and after look is so satisfying!
That light up jewel turned out really nice. I am a little jealous I didnt do it to mine, lol. This one was brutal and looks like someone buried it 6ft under before I got to it! I am just glad I was able to get it cleaned up and give it a new lease on life! DGC will be a great care taker of it!
Man that console was nasty! You did an awesome job on restoring that system and beyond with all those mods added! Great video and keep up the good work!
Thank you sir! I couldnt agree more FILTHY, but hey no bugs in it, so thats a plus! Heck yeah, I didnt even think about it till DGC said it, but playing on a CRT + recording HDMI sounds like a fantastic option as well!
Great video guys. It always amazes me on how you can turn something that looks like it's been dragged in the mud, then pulled out of the trash and turn it into something extraordinary. Putting those LEDs in there is the icing on the cake 👌. I'm sure DGC is loving this thing. One day I'll take the plunge on the N64 HDMI.....one day lol.
Thanks Starlink! This one was in really bad shape... I mean how you described it is pretty much my exact diagnosis. One the bright side, at least there wasn't any bugs in it!! I would agree, the charcoal + leds looks amazing! Let me know buddy, your Saturn is lonely and needs a friend :)
Thank you so much Tim for making the Atari 2600 RGB mod! I know we have the Retron 77 now, but it isnt the same as using the real hardware. Excellent Interview both times!
FYI: Talked to MarshallH yesterday. FW1.8 is on the way with the next batch. I helped test it and it seems to fix the issue where some would show artifacts (usually after being on for an hour in Goldeneye 007).
Ohhh, good to know! Let me know when you guys place another order for ultra hdmi's I have cash on hand and ready to roll! I may have picked up a few more N64's in anticipation, lol.
Good video..The last revision from Tim's Worthington universal RGB board can also de blur like the HDMI witch is the one I'm gonna be using on mines. It looks the same as the HDMI and it cost a lot cheaper. It takes a while to ship because its coming from Australia. I dont like the Framemeister even tho is said to be the best. I have the scart cables run through the Mclassic. Best picture you'll get.
Soldering of that FFC cable is recomended to butt it up against the very end if the legs on the chip rather than halfway up the leg. This ensures the cable is attaching at a flat and level surface and reduces the likelihood over overheating and damaging the legs. Plus as an added bonus, it puts the part that attaches to the capacitors closer to the general area. But hey, as long as it works, then it's all good.
haha, I have to disagree with that. I have that problem right now and its embarrassing. One day I will fix it, but man... with 10+ consoles hooked up, ready to play at a moments notice... its hard not to have that rats nest back there!
Velcro Ties, Zip ties, Label maker with labels on each end of the cable, and some power management system. I like the Pyle pro www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037GPLOE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Cuts vampiric power and cause less wear on old systems while not in use.
You sir sound like you have done this a time or two! I will check that out for sure. I have been working on upping my organization game, so its something I will likely end up doing here soon. I like the power solution quite a bit, thanks for bringing it to my attention!
Yeah I agree. It make a bigger difference when you have it on a 60" TV. I was watching the footage in my video editing software and on my cell phone and its much harder to see the difference. When you blow it up on a 60" TV, it becomes much more clear!
Is it possible to put a bluetooth "controller" for LED's inside a gamecube controller? And do you know how you would go about changing an LED's brightness for a mod?
Yes very possible. Just wire the the BT controller to the rumble motor as it runs off the 5v line. From there you should be able to run RGB leds to the BT controller. As for adjusting brightness you can do that from the app that works with the BT led controller
I prefer Voultars method of installing the FFC, by butting it up against the edge of the legs, rather than placing it in the middle of the legs. Using it as a guide made it rather simple for me, a novice at soldering, to install. My biggest issue was soldering to the PIF, since my revision requires that it connects to one of the vias rather than the chip leg itself. I ended up using a leg from the Blue LED I installed in the via, then connected the FFC to that.
That is a great way to do the install on the PIF, I ran into a few that I had to do exactly as you did. It actually works pretty well!! Glad to hear Voultars method worked! I have been doing it this way for a long time, but I am familiar with that method and it works quite well!!
Great question. I just realized I omitted that from the video. I used the following blueooth rgb controller, ripped it apart and wired it up to a 5v line and ground off the console. www.ebay.com/itm/Wireless-Bluetooth-Music-Remote-Smartphone-App-Controller-For-5050-RGB-LED-Strip/232881230572?hash=item3638cd92ec%3Am%3AmeVEHWtrLcndXXlompfroHQ&var=532414924334

I wired this up using pin 4 as ground from the ac adapter area of the pcb and then 5v from the av cable area of the pcb and it looks amazing. Too bad my n64 doesn't work anymore and I have no idea how to trouble shoot or what I fucked up :(
Hot glue under LEDs seems like a bad idea. In theory couldn't the heat from the LEDs cause hot glue failure? Maybe during summer when the ambient temperature is already high.
Thank you for your amazing work, I have both ultrahdmi and rgb modded n64 with deblur , I think the rgb mod is more convenient specially if you pair it with OSSC 1.6 using the new oled panels from lg or sony. ( only 12 ms input lag on screen, CRTS have 8ms) on UltraHDMI i get about 18ms lag, Im not sure if others get the same since the measuring method varies. Ultrahdmi is slightly sharper, but barley noticeable. but with 18ms lag, id always go RGB ---> OSSC 1.6
Great video. I was curious on your thoughts of the PS Classic announced as well as the inevitable N64 Classic announcement that should follow shortly in the coming weeks?
Thank you sir! Well, without getting super into the details, I am excited about both. I personally think the N64 classic currently has a leg up as Nintendo has proved, through the NES Classic, SNES Classic and now NES on Switch that they are damn good at emulation. Having said that, Sony has proved to be able to emulate PS1 well on the PS3 and PS4, but that hardware is much more robust than what I would expect with a classic system. They will both be day 1 purchases for me, but if I had to buy 1 and wait on the other I would buy the 64 and wait to see how the emulation is on the PS1. My answer here is solely based up on Nintendo's excellent SNES and NES emulation and proven track record with those classic systems. My guess is there is no way Sony screws it up though and both will be excellent!!
not a fair comparison as you turned on deblur for hdmi and kept the blurred image for RGB. Should've used Tim Worthington's N64RGB board, it does deblur too!
Its a fair enough comparison. While ultrahdmi mods are impossible to find these days when that video was made the deblur options were not as readily available. To me it shows rgb + framemeister is a great choice and nearly the same as ultrahdmi
@@RockerGaming no, n64RGB + framemeister IS fair because it has the same deblur and *looks better* than HDMI (analog video hides dithering better over RGB)

Someone expressed concerns in the comments of one of these videos about accidentally frying the AV multiout by trying to get 5V from there and I think that's exactly what I somehow did.
