Bryan, glad you enjoyed that so much. The albums seems partly like a crash course in some of the varieties of Greek music, albeit, mixed with American and Latin forms at times. I don't think there is anything distinctively Indian here. I think you are just hearing a similarity in approach. What westerners call ornamentation is pretty much just expected in a lot of these interrelated traditions (like Greek, Turkish, Arabic, and Persian music).
I figured Ipirotiko would find the clarinet taking a lead role, since the music of Ipiros is known for the central role of that instrument (even though it's used elsewhere in Greece as well). Also, I think it has some distinctive rhythms, but I am not up on that. Apparently, Greece uses a type of clarinet that is not typically used in western Europe, as you were beginning to suspect.
You might want to just glance at the Wikipedia article on Rebetiko, which is one major strand of Greek popular music that will give you a sense of how many strands are already being tied together in that genre.
I didn't recognize it at first, but on closer listen, I am pretty sure I have heard that first song before, probably performed by a major singer like Haris Alexiou or Glykeria.

    Great reaction/analysis!
I wasn’t sure about suggesting this one because there is so little context to work with. But I love Greek music so I wanted to share some on this channel. I think it turned out great. Thank you!

Thanks so much! I don't know how good the analysis was but I genuinely enjoyed myself and discovered quite a bit of new sounds and music so, if nothing else, this video was a massive success for me.

It's fair to claim that you released two reactions/analyses for vastly different, yet very eclectic albums today! Awesome stuff! ❤
(This one being a new great addition to me)

It's Greek to me! So far anyway. I have only listened to a few minutes of this, but this is very much in my wheelhouse. The first track sounds pretty much like straightforward Greek music to me, but Greek music already is a blend of lots of elements. I have some Greek tracks I have thought about requesting at some point. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what you make of this, since it will give me an idea of how you might respond to some of the Arabic music (as well as those couple Greek tracks) I have thought about requesting. I don't listen to as much Greek music as Arabic music, but I do like quite a bit of it.

Loxandra have some videos online where you can see them play their instruments:

I'm just starting this video, but I wanted to say the the title reminded me of a wonderful band I got to see while studying music in college at Sac State. My freshmen year we had the Festival of New American Music, and my class was lucky enough to here a performance from a band who had a modern jazzy take on Gamelan music from Bali. The group was called Now Ensemble, and the song was Awake, and our music theory class of maybe 20 people got to witness the world premiere of it being played live. It was an ethereal song and full of different elements that made for almost an operatic performance. I highly recommend giving it a listen

Regarding flourishy melody writing (2:17:32): You checked out Cappella Romana with Byzantine/Greek/Eastern Orthodox chant some time ago. If you contrast that to Gregorian chant from the Latin/Western tradition, you can notice the difference between the very clean and angelic Gregorian chant vs. the ornamental Orthodox chant, as well. Very interesting.

I believe what you initially thought was a woodwind is actuality an ancient Arabic bowed string instrument, some kind of "Rehab" possibly. (If you're giving a masterclass on it, you might call it a "Rehab clinic" I guess 😉

Ok. I might have been wrong on the instrument (what a waste of a good dad joke 😉)
Anyways, a wonderful album full of nice surprises. And as usual, I thoroughly enjoy whenever you're stoked about what you react to and are doing extatic analysees of 😍

It was certainly a good joke that I still laughed at even if they ended up not having that instrument 😄

i love your reactions, an analysis after every song is great, i'd still love to see ya react to "whats inside is more than just ham" by Feet (and other songs), amazing indie English band and seeing your reaction would be cool

I love your reactions. I think Control Denied (The side project of Chuck Shuldiner) would be perfect for a metal episode. Very proggy, and more heavy/thrashy compared to Death.

When it comes to ancient folk songs (and even jazz standards) , I don't think it "fair" to talk about "covers". It's part of the musical tradition(s) to make your own thing from a core "composition". Even if you do (unlike here) just play a traditional folk song like you think it was originally intended to be played (yet no one knows...), do you call performances of classical works "covers"?....

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  Місяць тому +2

That's quite true. And I think I even brought something similar up somewhere in that video -- that folk music was mostly passed around so I'm sure that, much like folklore, different versions were constantly being played based on who was playing it.
