As an American, so far I've been both a little ashamed at how difficult your travels have been (especially over land), and very proud of our "can-do" attitude when you managed to find the right folks to help you out. @@VladZavi I mean, as someone from the Boston area, I get the stereotype as New Englanders are definitely reserved around strangers, but they did have a number of good conversations with people in Boston in the video. Keep in mind that in Boston and Cambridge proper (where they were) a good portion of the population does not own a car and would not be able to help them drive there anyways.
The second Tom said "breaking news" I thought "is this when they find out the Queen died?" Was so interesting seeing your guys' live reaction while in the middle of executing the trip. And, as always, fantastic video Tom. Proud to be a Patron!

47:53 the engine is probably over heating due to no water being pumped through it, those engines cool themselves by pumping the cold sea water through them so if a hole is clogged somewhere it will stop that from happening resulting in a overheating engine.
I feel like your experience with Stavros is a great microcosm of the difference between folks in the US vs Europe (definitely a generalization). A little hesitant at first and wary of danger/scams, but once you have their trust and interest they will go all in to contribute to your mission. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!
It really is how most Americans are, I feel. I'm always skeptical of strangers at first. Don't want to get taken advantage of, you know? Ours is a low-trust culture rife with scammers and criminals, or at least that's what we're taught to think from an early age, and it's tough to shake that programming. But for anyone who's managed to break through the ice, I'll move heaven and earth to help them if I can.
@@cogspace honestly, like when people let me go in front of them in line or somehow disadvantage themselves for me, i ALWAYS try to return the debt. i think most americans are nice people, it's just the initial break through before they become trusting.

Working in Ukraine so not got much joy here but seeing you’ve got a new series with THE GREG makes me so happy, going to be waiting impatiently for every episode
Im from the middle US and took a week vacation to Florida beaches. Stumbled accross 2 Brits who were doing a "florida beach trip" spending 2 nights at a different beach. I dunno why I trusted them so much, but those fools were drinking whiskey with me in my hotel room that night for no reason. Maybe I subconsciously knew they were from out of the country and wanted to help give them a hell of a trip. I hope they look back at their journey and remember the random drunk guy giving them endless bourbon. They definitely remain in my memories for sure. I'd like to think if the roles were reversed, they'd do the same for me.
We're so happy to see Welsh Gregg back on top form, doing what you do best - mucking about and having a laugh. Brilliant first episode, that we have been waiting very impatiently for!
I bet that was an awesome feeling! I'm interested for when they get to VA to see how many places I know and just how close they got to my old stomping grounds in college. Great series!
As an American I am very much looking forward to this journey! I think you're going to find that most Americans will probably be wary at first but overall are very friendly and willing to help. Even though we in the Northeast have a pretty shitty reputation as being assholes, we're pretty friendly if you catch us right.
Get in! Been waiting for this one for a while. Very excited for this series. The How NOT to Travel Europe was one of the best web series I've ever seen and really motivated me to get out there and travel. Let's go!!
Well, you discovered that avoiding the T and walking up and down Mass Ave asking for help on a Tuesday isn't the best way to get help in Boston 😂. College students in Boston and Providence are probably the least likely people to own a car in the US, outside of New York. So glad your trip started coming together in Long Island!
I actually found them a few rides, but a day too late lol. I like that everyone was pretty honest though. "Yeah you're gonna have trouble finding that." It was bad timing. If they started on a weekend, it would have been a different story.
As a long time follower of the channel and fellow long islander, glad to see you get some help from friendly and willing people. Great series! Love the content!
"But something about the manager seemed to change...he suddenly seemed genuinely invested in our mission..." *~THIS VIDEO WAS SPONSORED BY LIGHTHOUSE MARINA~* I burst out laughing at that. Classic setup and punchline. I guess he did a little bit of research and thought "FREE PROMOTION!!!"

I can otherwise only imagine the stories you two live through and create in books and nostalgic films, but you take me back to the fact, that this is the reality and also the beauty of life.
By far my favorite series on UA-cam is How Not to Travel Europe, so I am incredibly excited to see what happens in the next few episodes. This episode was great!
This is so cool. As a fellow Long Islander and long time boater in the Little Peconic Bay, I can say with experience that you guys are [pretty damn brave for traveling that water on your little Frankenstein boat. Next time, use the channel markers! Your travels through the Great South Bay should be sketchy as well- lots of sharks out in that area near the Hamptons and Montauk. Loved seeing the guys at the Marina help ya'll out. That's what we're all about.
Great video, Tom! I love your adventures! For your closed captioning, at 30:55, the man is saying “but we winterize” if you want to update it. Thanks for providing CC, it’s very nice to be able to read!
I think a lot of folks who have never been to the US seriously underestimate the kindness of most folks here. There are very few places and people in the states who are unwelcoming to strangers, and americans have a knack for helping out people who need it, especially if a good adventure is underfoot. Glad the people you guys have met have treated you with hospitality, it's really great to see from my fellow citizens. Can't wait for the rest of the series!
I was sad to see a lack of Boston charm! Living here I see a lot of friendly people but it's true they're not everywhere. It's sad watching this seeing how many people aren't interested in conversation, and how car-centric our whole infrastructure is.. hope the rest of the trip is a leg up from here! Always happy to give you a lift next time you're in Boston Tom!
I laughed when he said they were getting blanked left and right because that's pretty much the Boston experience. Plenty of nice folks but there's definitely no expectation to humor folks when you're not in the mood for chit chat with strangers.
It's harder to approach people on the street. The charm is gonna be at the bar. But it was a Tuesday, so that made it harder to get them a ride. I actually heard back from a few people a day later who were down to do it. Lol. Boston has a wealth of good folk, charming people, and overly comfortable townies. They're just not usually vibing with idle chit during the day. It is what it is.
@@tommy_casual I hope you mentioned to them that the Amtrak stop in New London is right by the ferry they were looking for. Figure they were looking for an adventure but it's only like $6 more if you leave early.
I don’t think people are friendly in general in whole northeast region, and Pa. Just my observations. You go more south and it’s so different, or west coast.
Oh my word. I cannot believe it. As soon as you said “New London” my jaw actually dropped. I live nearby and am a police officer for the town that surrounds New London on all three sides. Of all of the places you could’ve picked with train stations (AMTRAK runs up and down the entire coast) that is awesome! Cheers!
Well I usually dont coment on videos but goddamnit these types of mind-numbingly adventurous videos of just travelling and not giving a damn about where you gonna sleep that night is just so appealing to me. I hope to one day get myself to doing an adventure inspired from yours. Thank you for this content Tom, words cannot describe how entertaining your videos are!
My dad traveled around the globe when he was young, and one of his destinations was the US. This was back in the 90s, but yet his stories reminds me of what this adventure might become. He traveled from New York to Chicago to Denver, and then into California and Las Vegas which at the time was one of the fastest growing cities. Later on he made his way to Los Angeles, and coming from perhaps the smallest village in all of Sweden, it was quite the experience for him. He has told me that you could be driving at 100km/h through Los Angeles on a highway for hours on end, and still keep seeing houses and infrastructure flying by you outside the car window.
So excited to see this series come back!! How NOT to Travel Europe was probably one of my favourite series on UA-cam ever. I love your spirit of adventure, and I'll be here next week to see what you've been up to!
Tom, you are an absolute legend. The only channel on youtube that can add so much humor, entertainment and engagement to the already fantastic piece of content that is your adventure. Greg is anabsolute chad as well. Keep the great stuff up, you are truly the best at what you do.
This is incredible. I cannot explain the feeling I get watching your adventures. Thank you infinitely for sharing this with the world, you make my heart want to explode.
These genuinely feel like adventures. Facing all the adversity and struggle just to get from point A to point B and then finding little places of respite just to get warm and have a beer, it's like you're Frodo reaching Bree or Rivendell after being pursued by Ringwraiths all day.
YESSSSS! I loved the how not to travel Europe series, honestly the most original and one of the best series on UA-cam. I even watched it with my roommates and they loved it, makes you realize just how nice some people can be.
You guys are absolutely nuts. I loved the last series so much. This new edition brings so much newer and cooler things that I enjoyed watching every minute of it and I couldnt be any more happy for your guys' adventure
Its really amazing how different America and Europe are when you get into the nitty gritty *real* travel like what you guys did. Just vacationing around, and the differences seem superficial, but already I can tell that this vs. "How NOT to Travel Europe" is day and night.
As an American now gratefully living in the UK, this gave me so much anxiety to watch! I don't think the issue is that Europeans are nicer or more helpful in general, but that people don't gather in public and interact with each other as much in the US, so it's harder to make connections in the first place, plus they have less free time and the distances are so much bigger, which makes it harder to help, even if you want to.
Another TV worthy series! I'd pay to see this if I had to. I have been waiting with much enthausiasm for the first episode. Yesterday I told my girl I seriously couldn't wait to sit down with a brew and watch this!
I'm no seaman, but I'm pretty sure you overheated the engine by running it through mud in the shallows. You can see it getting kicked up in the water behind the boat.
Mmmohmygod it's adventure time again! Edit: This may not be a popular opinion, but I'd love for you to make another music album for your adventures. Ever since the first missioning video I was intrigued by the music, and later found out you actually produced it yourself. It's now happily living in my spotify likes.
@@607 Maybe he made the album as a kind of hobby project without the sole purpose of using it in the series of which he didn't even know it was going to be such a big hit. And I don't even mind the re-use honestly, because in the relatively short time that has pased it has managed to become very nostalgic and iconic for me. Hearing those tunes just puts me in that mood I only get from his adventure videos. Still, I love them so much that I'm just curious if he can expand that repetoire further with some more classics which will in time have the same effect.
I had a friend capsize on the coast of New Jersey and wash up on some rich lady's beach who immediately came out of her Summer home to yell at him to get off her land along with his upside down boat without asking if he was injured or needed help. In my experience, being from coastal Connecticut, the privatization and costs of the waterside is ridiculous, especially on Long Island beaches (and good luck finding a beach with surfing allowed), so good job finding those spots. Also, one of my least favorite things about American infrastructure is the focus on cars and lack of pedestrian ways. It is super exciting to see you in places I've frequented, though, like the Boston train station and such. I was in Italy when the queen died, staying on an farm near Turin, and most of them didn't speak English, but it was exciting when I got to England later and got to be one of the first of the public to see the queen's tomb at Windsor.
can't believe you guys ended up in providence! sad i didn't spot you guys, but it's still crazy to see you inside my starbucks. the building right next to it there is the RISD library, it's open to visitors on weekdays-beautiful building, and you might have had a decent chance there of running into a helpful student. still glad you got to enjoy firsthand the charms of the deserted kennedy plaza bus area lmaoo. looking forward to binging this series!! hope you come back to the east coast sometime soon :)
Good observation from Welsh Greg about being near a bus station in the UK. You can be in a nice town, but you literally turn a corner onto the same street as the bus station and everything turns to absolute shit.
Wow Tom I’m from Long Island in Suffolk County and wish I saw this because I could have helped you with car rides this entire leg of this trip, and to be completely honest, I bet you James was spitting facts about Plum Island, many people from here share his suspicions because the public are not allowed there from my knowledge. Also I just want to say that you would have had such a better time travelling with him and starting the trip from the south shore around the Cowfish restaurant where you guys were (I actually attended a wedding party there a few weeks back). However you got a deal with the motor from Stavros it seems. Also I couldn’t imagine ever seeing you two outside the Riverhead Sevs hahaha. What a great start to the journey excited to see where the next leg goes!
@@ITFC45 The island is government owned by the Department of Homeland Security which seems odd because the use of the island is an animal disease research center so its weird that Homeland Security owns the property and supposedly maintains it etc. From what is known online about the site animal tests are commonly run there but there have been talks of soon shutting down/selling the island. The conspiracy surrounds the outbreak of Lyme's disease in the US which was originally described in Lyme, Connecticut. Plum Island is close enough to New York, Connecticut and even Rhode Island to the point where people from each of those states could have plausibly worked on the island/caused a public outbreak. This theory is pretty much debunked however as Yale researchers have found Lyme's disease to be ancient to North America but only discovered in Connecticut in 1976. The theory still remains however and although I don't believe in the theory on Lyme's, personally I find it odd how millions of people live within such a short distance to the island and have an idea of what goes on there but have no idea the real use of the tiny island which is only 3 miles long. The island is rumored to be high security/restricted access even within the government as well.

I'm surprised a bay that shallow didn't have dedicated channels, but even on your map, I didn't notice any. And the news of the Queen shows how dedicated to the quest you guys were. There were about 24-36 hours when it was known her death was imminent with the royal family summoned to Scotland.

As an American, so far I've been both a little ashamed at how difficult your travels have been (especially over land), and very proud of our "can-do" attitude when you managed to find the right folks to help you out. I completely agree with another comment that US culture can be very helpful and warm, but there's always that initial cold-shoulder and distrust that must be pushed through.
I cannot WAIT to see the rest of this adventure!!!
They got cold shoulders because they started in Boston.
@@VladZavi imagineif they would have started this trip in some small town in Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, or some other midwestern town. They would probably have gotten to Miami on the first day and would be SOL in terms of the UA-cam video lmao. As a guy from a fairly small town in Indiana, I can say with confidence that people here would be ecstatic to help these guys out, especially once we found out what exactly they were trying to do.
Im wondering if it will get much better once they are out of democratic shitholes.

@@VladZavi I mean, as someone from the Boston area, I get the stereotype as New Englanders are definitely reserved around strangers, but they did have a number of good conversations with people in Boston in the video. They just couldn't find anyone up for the drive, which is too bad, but doesn't mean that everyone is a jerk.
Yeah, I think outside of a 7-11 is the worst way to find out the Queen died, but it definitely makes for a good running bit.

Very easy to flood them. Pull the fuel hose off and dry start.
They flooded it. Somehow they managed to do everything right and they let it rest for a while before they tried to start it again. Truly impressed.
I feel like your experience with Stavros is a great microcosm of the difference between folks in the US vs Europe (definitely a generalization). A little hesitant at first and wary of danger/scams, but once you have their trust and interest they will go all in to contribute to your mission. Can’t wait for the rest of the series!
Massholes are particularly cold at first, hard to thaw out too
Mentioning their youtube channel and looking it up seeing 1.16M subscribers probably made him a little more helpful ;)
@@Ne1170 This is more likely yeah.
It really is how most Americans are, I feel. I'm always skeptical of strangers at first. Don't want to get taken advantage of, you know? Ours is a low-trust culture rife with scammers and criminals, or at least that's what we're taught to think from an early age, and it's tough to shake that programming. No joke, this is really helping restore my faith in humanity. You guys are relying so much on the kindness of strangers and it's actually working. There really are good people everywhere. And no doubt you gave these kind folks stories to tell for years to come. I don't think I could manage a straight-line mission, but I would love to do a How NOT to Travel trip someday.

Lol.

Thanks for taking us all with you on these crazy adventures Tom and Greg! Looking forward to next weeks!
This is going to be such a great series. A true modern day adventurer in the most fun way.

Hahaha that Marina owner definitely took a look at your channel, saw 1m subs and had cartoon dollar signs in his eyes

What's the conspiracy about the island?
