Nice! I've read that because Mistoffelees is a character with such dance-heavy requirements, how much or little he sings is usually less important compared to his dance ability. Aside from the original London cast, I don't know that I've seen any/heard any recordings where he does the Gumbie Cat's song. (Though I did hear a recording where he did Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer's song). This is super-cool and I'm always excited to see different ways it's been staged!
Yeah, Mistoffelees sung the Old Gumbie Cat song until 1995/96 in London productions and UK tours! In the original Broadway production, Mistoffelees sung Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer's song until 1987, when the Vienna version was adopted (This is the modern version we see now, which used the Broadway melody but had Mj & Rt actually sing their own song) This version wasn't adopted by London until 1997! (Prior to that London had used a slower, jazzier arrangement, which they used in the 2019 Cats movie).
It was actually during the 1995 UK tour that the newer melody got adopted into the west end production whilst the tour had the old slow melody. The only reason I know is because I was having lunch with Babs King who was playing Demeter on the tour & she told me that they were low on cast cuz of a flu outbreak abd had to ship Ian Meeson up from the West end show to cover Mungo in Manchester even though he was doing the new version in london , he new the old version of the song cuz he covered the role before the new version was introduced. Think he covered for about 5 days up here.
They usually care more for mistoffelees' dancing ability. There is a track for Misto to sing his own song, and a track where Mistoffelees doesn't sing anything.
The great thing about cats is that who sings what can be mixed around and it still works. There can be whole different interpretations and thats fine. Thats what makes it so awesome. Don't think that munk should have to sing every single song. It all depends on the casting. Also that dance off was epic, why was it not kept?
It was only really introduced for a star spot for Wayne Sleep when they first staged the show.in 81. All the stars were promised 2 featured numbers in the show abd he wasn't happy with just the invitation to the ball and allegedly demanded to sing Gumbie Cat or he'd leave the production. He got the number and a great dance off as well as obviously the huge dance solo in his title number which was done just to a drum when they were st blocked it. The musuc wasn't written fir it at that point .
Luke Baxter as Mr Mistoffelees (who was also Carbuckerty in the original cast and Mungojerrie in the first re-cast of the role and Mistoffelees in the 1989/90 tour)
Is this Louisa Shaw as Jenny here from the 1st UK tour then? Looks & sounds like her. I.lived that tour. Saw it multiple tomes in Blackpool and later became good friends with Babs King who played Rumple then and then Demeter in both the tour s abd West end. LOVED it at the new london/ Gillian Lynne. It really felt like you were in theur world. A unique experience for sure 😻😻😻
@DontBeAZombie Oh yes, I really like Mistoffelees' dance off with Jenny, too...... one of my favourite parts that Misto has to do. This isn't the production where Mistoffelees is singing "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" (that were the early years on Broadway, don't have a video of that) and some of "Old Deuteronomy" (that was in the first years of the original London production) The rest is mostly like the video, except "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer", they sing the old tune of the song.
Mistoffelees time to shine!! XD His dance off with Jenny. I think they hated on Jenny a bit much though, If I saw it I would assume none of the cats liked her lol. Mistoffelees is adorable here, and his voice is awesome Has to be one of my fave actors for that character. Is this the production where he also sung Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer? and bits of Old D with Tugger? Please upload more from this production if you have any! I am dyeing to see the rest Thanks so much for the upload BTW :)!
I have never seen/heard of a production where Misto sings this. Surprisingly, I actually quite like this one, even though it should be Munkustrap. =P But I adore Misto's little dance-off with Jenny and his showy-offy bits, haha! :-) Thanks so much for posting.
In the UK it was ALWAYS Misto singing tj8s until they made the 1998 TV film. After that the musuc abd staging git adjusted to be more in line with the film so mistook stopped singing it abd Munk did like the film. In the US it was always Munk that sung it as far as I'm aware.
Are there any more videos of Mistoffelees singing? I really want to see a clip of where he sings Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer haha. Also: does anyone else think the choreography makes much more sense when Misto sings it? Especially when he gets on the car and opens it with his magic. In the 1998 broadway version it seemed a little off with Munkustrap singing it and Misto opening the trunk haha. I enjoy this version much more tbh
@musikmadchen3 Why SHOULD it be Munk singing this song? in case you are not aware of it, this is how it was done in the original production (there was even a third verse). Of course as it was difficult to find guys to play Misto who could sing this song, tap and have a principal dancer level in classical ballet, they had to change around 1994. In other productions they were already using Munk for this song, and sometimes even for the Invitation, making Misto a mute character.
In the UK he was still singing it up until the TV film in 1998. After that both the tours avd West end were adjusted to be more kike the film abd that's when munk took over singing this fir good here. Shame cuz I thought it gave Misto more character doing it like this. Made more sense. He used to run upto munk and whisoer in is ear, munk would give him a nod as if to say GO ON THEN abd he'd start the song. It was really cute.
@@ladyjennyanytime5195 I played Misto in the west end production back in 1991/92, when I joined the Gumbie song was performed one key lower (but the girls trio were still singing in the original key…) but as I had been practicing all summer in the original key, I asked the musical director to put it back to the original. As for the little scene between munkustrap and quaxo, I never heard of it. Maybe it started a few years after I left.
Are the lasses playing Demeter and Bombalurina the same ones from the 1998 movie? They look the same! And I agree with this comment section, Mistoffelees/Quaxo out-tapped Jenny xxx
@sjcrea Since you obviously didn't get what I meant, I'd just like to point out that I was making a joke because Munkustrap is my favourite character and I happen to like that he usually sings it in productions these days. I didn't mean Mistoffelees shouldn't sing it and I'm sorry if you took it that way or I offended you.
@sjcrea I'm sorry, I thought since I used =P afterwards, people might realize. Sorry. And I would have paid a great deal of attention to the OLC recording if I had been able to get my hands on a copy. I've only heard a couple of songs from it, and have so far only been able to find the OBC recording in full. Sorry for my ignorance. No hard feelings on this end either.
@musikmadchen3 Sorry... didn`t sound at all like you were making a joke... people should finally understand that others can`t hear the tone of their voices when such subtle jokes are made online. I wasn`t offended but as you were saying that you never heard of a production where Misto sang this... you obviously didn`t pay much attention to the OLC recording... No Hard feelings
MIsto singing Jenny's song and doing a tap dance battle with her is everything i never knew i needed
Naughty beetle! And Mister Mistoffelees - what a little scene stealer you are! Totally adorable, as always!

those were the times that they're letting mr. mistoffelees sing.
I think he always has one of the best voices. A shame he has almost nothing to sing today!
Yes he has beautiful voice♥
That surprises me no munkus
i guess it is quite off topic but do anyone know of a good place to stream newly released movies online ?
They usually care more for mistoffelees' dancing ability. There is a track for Misto to sing his own song, and a track where Mistoffelees doesn't sing anything.
definitely one of my favourite parts of cats all together. i love jennyanydots, she is so underappreciated.

Misto tapping and spinning at the same time!
I didn't know Mr. Mistoffelees also sing this song :o
Alfonso R. Duarte In the original production from England, he sang it. They later changed it to Munkustrap.

Sorry Jenny, but Misto won that dance battle.
I saw the 2006 UK tour at the Mayflower! It was amazing! Worth every penny!
whoa what?! mist sang that bit there?? bravo!!!
@katlaw55
Yes there is...... Bryn Walters as Admetus/Macavity, Leah Sue Morland as Rumpleteazer and Phyllida Crowley-Smith as Victoria
You didn't see her... Rosemarie didn't do Cats in 1993...;)
He has a nice voice
There's one for broadway and there's a UK tour comeing round next year as well!
Are the lasses playing Demeter and Bombalurina the same ones from the 1998 movie? They look the same! And I agree with this comment section, Mistoffelees/Quaxo out-tapped Jenny xxx
Bombalurina is Rosemary Ford from.the fim. Dekter is My friend Barbara King. Not too sure who Jelly is here.
@@ladyjennyanytime5195 thank you xxx
Bombalurina is played by Helen Way and I think Beth Robson is Jenny
Oh I love this version more!
whoa, where can I see this cast list?
@chrissi2810 in the film rumpleteazer is played by Jo Gibb

Misto is uh… packing😳
❤
i know! i herd bout that too! i wish i could be in it.....but maybe ill save up and see it!
@MarcelsBitch
Ich hab das auch immer gedacht, aber das ging noch bis 1996 so, dass Misto/Quaxo das gesungen hat...... zumindest in London.
Is Nadia Strahan playing Bombalurina?
Mrowe good job
The actress playing Bombalurina kind of looks like Rosemarie Ford.
It is her I think. She played nothing Bombalurina and Grizabella on the 1st UK tour and then the west end.
I think it might be another actress called Helen Way maybe. She's a similar build to Rosie abd mannerisms too
Que daría yo por haber estado ahí :'c
O en alguna otra presentación ù-ú
idk... but in the 1998 she was... did u know her last name is actually poundford?
does anyone know who the cast is?
Google CATS fabdom wiki they have all the London and worldwide cast lists there as well as photos. 😊

Why is misto singing this.. its normally munk.
@@ghostinamacs6614 in the original version, including the original album, Misto sang this.

Guy-Paul De St Germain regardless I imagine it was great fun to do.
