Do Seth Sets Work? (is this a viable high intensity technique?)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Back with another video on high intensity techniques, and this time I will go over my thoughts on Seth sets as prescribed from IFBB Pro Seth Feroce. Do they work, when you should do them, and so on. I do some good old bicep curls with this technique and let me tell you the pump and burn are insane. Let me know if you use Seth sets in your workouts. Thanks for watching.

Have you done a Seth set before?
They are literally fire
I haven’t. But I will now
Yep. I use them to break pass plateaus (once every 3 to 6 months) . This works very well when you only do that one time for the week per muscle. I usually do 3 exercises per muscle then my usual cardio work. Wouldn't recommend for more than that as fatigue would become an issue for nattys. If you're on gear then twice or 3 times should be fine. Eg. Monday = chest, Tuesday = back, Wednesday = quads & calves, Thursday = hams and lower back /core, Friday = arms. Saturday & Sunday = rest.
Another great concept is suicide sets. You decrease the weight and as you go. it's until failure with each weight, no rest. I personally use 10% decreases until I get to the lightest weight in the gym. Usually I have a friend or two to help change the weights. If not cable machines and possibly Smith machines for safety.
ill do one to end leg day today w/ extensions
Going to try it out at the gym today :)
Thank You John! I feel like you get me!! 😂💪💪 Look forward to training together here soon! I need to be 100% so we can give the fans a real show!!
You two are completely opposite but you share the same love for bodybuilding. I like both your channels and I hope to see you two collab real soon
It would be the most epic video collab of the year!

I'm a simple man I see video about Seth sets and click like button....
According to Seth he's still my favorite IFBB pro. 👍good stuff John. I use Seth sets one week a month... insane pump.

What I love about John is his humbleness and willingness to give credit to others! He sets his ego aside!
John was The Man!
I think we need an alright bye everybody at the end. Plus you can add them to the back of the shirts. Love when people throw praise to others! Keep on keepin’ on!
No idea why there is any dislikes, your name comes up in every gym I’ve gone too and I see people doing your exercises. You had made such an impact and saved so many people from injuries and i have people come up to me and ask what I changed to get results and I tell them to check your channel and there are all instantly hooked. Thank you again John your the man!!
I really love how humble this man is, especially while still giving really solid information.
The last 5 reps are definitely important... not necessarily that you need to go to failure on every set, but if you left 5 in the tank every time you’d be hugely inefficient. Great video 👌🏼
hi
Dude, what about effort instead of quantifying a targeted number. Those last 5 are without value depending on the mindset and or implemented programming.
If I'm doing a fortitude cluster or dc cluster, every rep is more important than the last one.
Alright hi everybody, John meadows here.
Brought some comfort to my day 💪🏼💪🏼

I think machine applications are the best and the safest for this muscle-busting technique. 🔥💪🔥💪🔥💪
Just want to say what an outstanding trainer you are, John. You have a great way of breaking things down and explaining the “why” we do things. Thanks so much for all your content.
“Dr. Squat” , Fred Hatfield taught this stuff in his seminars (1998) ATP-CP cycling in 1 long set. Type 2c, Type 2b and Type 1a muscle fibers (muscular energetics) . Heavy, medium and light weights. Once every 10 days. Fred Hatfield was a true scientist and savage r.i.p.
tfitness4u I was going to mention the same thing. Dr Hatfield has this whole protocol and science behind it in his book “Hardcore Bodybuilding”
The Gorilla Mecca He was such an effective teacher. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1998. Funny, he was brilliant and he had a tough/street smart edge too. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾 Dr Squat
I work to failure. If I don't I'm gonna be mad at myself. I train to be tough. Great videos man.
Exactly! One week ago i had one week delosd with light load and i felt really bad even i ned it...
THANK YOU!!! I am so sick of people trying to get away from hard work and saying its because of science. Dont outscience muscle growth. You are awesome man!
Exactly!!
every time i watch this guy work out, the intensity in his face is insane. He looks like he honestly going all out.
I started doing Seth sets after Seth introduced his concept in one of his videos. They are great and they kick your ass.
They have helped me push past a plateau and really push the blood and nutrients into the muscle.
You're correct when talking about using his method with safer lifts.
Great video.
Such much positivity! Wonderful short video, thanks again.
Such a pleasant guy to listen to. And always so much to take home from every video!
0:55 John's face lights up in excitement haha. Only channel I consistently watch.
Take care of that Heart mate your a Legend, Great your still pushing as best you can under the circumstances John, best wishes big guy👍!
Hi John, thanks for another great video.
Thats how you do a set to failure.
I've model my training on yours, though generally using 1 less exercise per bodypart, as i train at home. Ive been using cluster sets on my 2nd or 3rd exercise and drop sets or seth sets on my last exercise.
I've found that the seth sets really help me establish a stronger connection with the muscle as im squeezing the weight up.
Can't wait to see you work with Seth
I do seth sets for mid delt shoulders and face pulls, but with bands. Band crossover side lat for the mid. 100 lb x5, 50 lb x10 then 30lb x20. I find mid and rear shoulders do well with higher reps and increased resistance at the most contracted point.
This is Great! Cant wait to see you making a video together when Seth 's triceps is better.
I really love such techniques. You push you muscles to the limit in short period of time. I like doing "50's". I pick the weight which i can push for 20 reps, and doing it until i've done 50 reps. With minimal rest, 10 seconds max.
modern bodybuilding's voice of reason! this is the guy to learn from. thanks John!
Holy shit that shirt! Would love to see a, Seth and John collab. I know he's also on a rebuild after health issues.
SF seems like a total douchebag. Maybe he should rebuild his mental health and personality.
@@crvzer lol he does not, hard working family man that has a bit of a faul mouth. U just butthurt fast
@@crvzer what :DDDDD
Seth does not seem like a douchebag To me🤔
@@warchimp9821 same. He is funny guy
Glad you brought that up about picking safer exercises for the Seth sets, I usually do it with dumbells exercises, I got to order that shit priceless
Real cool that you just do the exercise and give your opinion at the end, instead just talking what you think is best. You and atheanX are in my view the best coaches out there. Good one doggy!!
#AllRepsMatter
LOL..love it
As always, great info. I will be incorporating this into my workout tomorrow morning. Cheers.
The music is a very welcome addition.
Thanks for all you do, John!
Awesome music, that and seeing you kill the weights got me pumped up!
Great topic. Im using cluster sets. Good vid on it too. Thanks.
This philosophy and Dorian's compliment each other. Great review.
the bar drop at the end of the drop set had me cracking up 🤣
I've never heard of this technique before. Going to add a Seth set to my next workout tomorrow!
I will need to try it. I like the concept because it’s easy to remember/calculate, and it ends up being the same total weight moved, just by starting heavier and then going lighter. I have always preferred those descending sets as I am not one who gets stronger through multiple warmup sets into heavier working sets.
Another quality video! Keep being you man.
Appreciate it!
This is a great idea, surprised I haven’t heard of this before. Going to give them a try tonight. Thank you for the info!
Think we need your Spotify playlist John!
Gotta love this guy, he's one of the most honest and real homebuilders out here
thanks to john for involving other body builders and information to compliment them and techniques [it's all complicated stuff] and seth is dude that talks my language it's almost like i'm in the lounge as a kid with my older brother watching him on youtube ? also hats off again to john for your efforts in training nations of people
I use these as a final finisher after a Dorian style workout just for maximum blood flow
How does your body feel the following day?
Mike Oxmaul usually a degree of soreness just from the failure training, but i like using the seth sets to drive blood, nutrients, and stretch the fascia
This is the exact method I use lmao, I absolutely love it
Cattlecum Wewlad bro i prefer this over cutler-style training any day. my muscles stay full for days after the workout and it’s way better for nattys in my opinion.
kian fotouhi so basically intensity vs volume? I agree intensity always
This was a great breakdown John. I respect both of u and what u stand for.
I seen a video where Seth said you would do a video together soon as his tricep healed.
So it's basically drop set just with fixed weights and reps. I like drop sets.
Yup, nothing special here
@@ryannachtrab ditto, same shit different name
Just seemed like a burnout set...
My drop sets I drop it less and dont do as high rep on the 2nd so its interesting but yeah
But the double the reps is the game changer..i did it like that for about 4+months saw amazing results(leaning also)..about to start again..after given body some rest..it is taxing on the body..just my experience take for what its worth..
As always thanks John, appreciate the information.
My pleasure!!
Right on can’t wait to try it out on my next bis exercise
Oh man how do I decide which to try?!? Thanks for always sharing your learnings from others in the industry John and bringing us THE BEST!
You’re a beast, John! Thanks for all the great content. 💪🏼
damn great info. john thanks for sharing your knowledge. gotta love this channel
Thanks for all the videos
My pleasure!
My first comment was me theorizing, because I try to comprehend things first and foremost. But now I've tried Seth sets - first on leg extensions, where they worked really well, then on weight-plate overhead triceps extension, first with a 45, then a 25. Worked great there, too. Worked pretty well with dumbbell arm curls, and last, I did this with Otis Ups - a kind of crunch with two dumbbells going about 45 degrees up in the air as you crunch up, followed by doing twice as many with just one dumbbell held in both hands. I'm sold on this one.
Thx, John. Yeah I'm a fan of Seth also. Love his work ethic. Just one thing I'd comment on. I like overloading...cluster sets, etc... especially when I'm stuck at a weight on smaller exercises. For big compounds, pyramids are my go to method where I trick my body into doing more reps toward the end.
The one comment I would make on drop weight in half and double the reps is to me, extreme higher reps may produce a crazy pump but it steers into endurance and leaves hypertrophy ranges if ya go crazy with it. I like feeding the muscle and recovery and anything over 20 reps is a bit much. I use Seth's technique but my ranges are 10/20 at the most. Definitely helps bust thru plateaus. 👍💪
❤️ John. One of the top channels on UA-cam!!!
Great video as usual, I’m learning a lot from you sir, your videos are easy to understand and explained very clearly. 💪
I shall try this, thanks.
I'm definitely going to give these a try as I love adding new things to push me forward on my journey!
Since the video came out I added the "sethset" to the last of the last exercise for each bodypart, it's pretty brutal, even tho the weight feels super light, you get to the point where your arm or whatever part just dosen't want to go through the range of motion any more. The breathing gets pretty hard too.
Started implementing Seth Sets a while back and they are brutal. You're definitely right though, you have to pick the right exercise to use these on though. Normally I will do them on the last couple burnout exercises at the end of my workout. Really great on leg extensions and prone leg curls, and dumbbell and EZ bar curls.
Thanl you, sir...and Seth. I will try this out because it looks great!!!
I follow both John and Seth. They have such different personalities, but both give great advice. I highly recommend both. They are terrific and I have personally benefited from their advice. I’d like to meet both of these guys. I find them very interesting and informative. I’m 73 years old and would like to know if I’m getting to old to do what systems and philosophy they promulgate, or should I start using different methods?
Nice! I will start working Seth sets into my routines.
Edit: Just did my first Seth set - dumbbell press - after my chest workout. Man that was rough, but felt awesome when I was done.
Fantastic John ..keep up great work love new tee Robert SNJ FANTASTIC
Love the video ! I do these “ drop sets “ with every workout , however , I rest for the same amount of seconds as reps I completed . So for instance if I do 15 reps , I drop the weight , rest 15 seconds , then try and double those reps . It’s brutal !
Miller Sets, huh?
Great technique! I love learning new methods of training when they make sense. Thanks so much John!
Nobody does these kind of videos anymore miss mountain dog another classic video
I'm seeing some people saying that Seth sets are essentially just drop sets but I like how they specifically are half the weight for twice the reps. I think a lot of people who do drop sets aren't really hitting failure with the lower weights and the number of reps they do is pretty arbitrary; on top of that, they will drop three, four, five times, which seems like a waste of time and energy to me. With Seth sets, you can't "cheat" the weight or the reps and you still get the benefit of drop sets. I've done drop sets for a long time but never Seth sets, I'll have to change that, I imagine this will pump you up like a balloon.
They ARE drop sets. But half the weight, double the reps.
Excellent discussion John. Something to think about and change up the routine. My workout tomorrow will certainly be different.
Another great video John. Don't know of you listen to Seth's podcast but he had about ten mins of great things to say about you. Let's get this collaboration going and invite me down!
oh cool - which one?
@@mountaindog1 the most recent one called wedding sex and phenomenal finger foods (i dont name the episodes lol)
Oddly, I have found that if I (complex or isolated moves) do ultra lights, to 25 or 50 reps respectively, for 3 sets, that my maximum lift ability is greater at that moment with a short 60 sec rest, than if I had not completed the high ultra lights previously. I picked this up from Sandow videos and it creates energy somehow that I have previously found unavailable to me. I have also done seth sets, without knowing it, and still have days where I do that. In a way Seth sets are like regression sets, which I also do. Burnout at 8-12-or 15, drop 10 pounds and burnout again wherever, drop 10 pounds and burnout again so on and so forth until you can't lift the bar at the end. This video is one of my favorite videos ever. Imagine, trying it out for comparison purposes live for the first time. That is nervy and great reality TV.
Hi John. Long time, I haven't seen you. Good to see you great. 🤗
Two of the greatest 👌👌🔥
Encore boys👊👊
Yup Did some today on legs and gonna do a few more tomorrow on shoulder
Always appreciate the videos John!
That looks like a crazy pump! Love the intensity, keep growing!
I can`t wait to try Seth sets!
I have seen Seth and his chest routine on this year ago. crazy thing, did it. Dumbel drop set for biceps is best thing, with lighter weigh is edge mover. Same with side shoulder.
Great video mr meadows
I always do these as the final set where I go to failure with a weight and then reduce the weight to do more reps. I never knew these were called seth reps. Just seemed like common sense to me to make the last set intense.
The shirt is awesome.
Love your video's. Just hit 48 and still trying to get stronger. I do sorta like a seth set. On what I call my light day for a body part I do 6 sets of 20-30 reps with about 1 min between each set and at the end of the workout I'm exhausted.
Good stuff
Awesome! Did them today, and by the second set my tri’s had such a pump, I looked like the guy pretending to have lats.
That's right. You just can't disslike Johns videos.
Great points John, I’ve always had better gains with progressive overload. Could be reps, weight, tempo or combos of all, whatever I choose to get my PE up. But in my experience it’s essential.
I would love you to do a youtube video with Seth! two of my favourite youtubers!!
I've done Seth sets and it definitely pushes you past your limits, Great Video, would love to see you both do a video together 💪
I do these at the barbell rack, makes switching weight a lot easier.
Good video big man
Hey John i tried seth sets on chest dumbbell flys and yes they work the pump is out of this world crazy pump
looking good John, hope you are feeling well too!
💪
Well said John, people get bogged down over thinking it. Just lift the damn weight! Someone else coined this phrase. :)
Crazy is good! I like doing 100 reps sets curls with a plate and a chain, might switch it up after a while whit this.
Dude, I love that shirt.
much love from australia mate xx
Nice to hear a shoutout to Chris Beardsley. His medium articles analyzing the most effective training techniques for various muscle groups are great, but very dense and require a lot of effort to grok.
Definitely want to try this!! I have done similar sets to this do it pretty regular love they way it feels, I can’t use super heavy weight so this technique works well for me!
Go for it young lady :)
Awesome, my brother! I, in my years have tried EVERYTHING! But to get the body from A to B, there has to be an EXTREME stress! I don't know who in the hell would argue about those last 5 reps! My results have been the best with ramping up to the weight I'm going to challenge myself with, and going all OUT as if someone had a gun to me! Let's say I end up with 16 reps. If I could repeat that 4 times, I wasn't really challenging myself was I? It's that EXTREME set that does the magic I believe. Your body is comfortable at A. To get to B, has to be HELL! That's what you have to do to get results other than being a beginner and I'm sure you agree. Along with nutrition like Mountain Dog which is the BEST!
Thank you sir keep up the great work
God Bless You John . RIP . Love you
