TIPS FOR BECOMING A BETTER TUTOR

  • Hi Friends,
    Today I will be sharing the best tips I have come across in my many years of being a tutor. I have been a tutor since eighth grade and these are the tips that I have accumulated through my tutoring experience and from my students.
    Step 1: Teach confidence to your students. The more confidence they have in the subject the better they will do.
    Step 2: Be Supportive. You need to create an environment that promotes learning and being supportive of your students is the best way to create that environment.
    Step 3: Bring in real world examples into your sessions. The more students can relate the subject to the real world the more they will be interested in learning.
    Step 4: Don't be Cocky. You are not better than the student. Cockiness is always very noticeable and it comes off as being condescending as well.
    Step 5: Remember you are in charge. Just as you should be supportive , you should expect your students to be supportive and respectful as well.

    A word on "cockiness." Sometimes knowledgeable people may be exasperated, especially when it seems like their students aren't really paying attention. My strategy for this, although it may seem odd, is to help with subjects with which I wasn't originally proficient myself. That way, I can relate. I do tend to get "cocky" though, if I'm working with a student in an area which I feel I've always been proficient. Students' preferences may vary, though. I personally don't mind someone with a not-so-great attitude who can teach a subject very well. I think an instructor's competence is the most important, and I may even prefer a "cocky" instructor, because he / she has confidence. On the other hand, an instructor who is too easy-going and laid back may be someone who doesn't know the material as well as I would like.

    • @MakethemMainstream
      @MakethemMainstream  6 років тому +2

      That is a very good observation. Thank you for sharing. I love that you will tutor subjects that you weren't originally proficient in to be able to relate to your students. I tutor math because I wasn't the best at it in my primary education. You are also right that a students preference of how their tutor behaves will vary from student to student. The tutor definitely needs to be knowledgeable about the subject and it is easy to get cocky when you have taught a subject for so long.

      as a tutor in australia, I also find it hard to not feel like this is easy and the student does not know. It is difficult to try and put yourself in the student's "Shoes" sometimes.

      secondly, while I try to use apples and oranges. some topics dont have real world examples. And also say "Great" when they solve a difficult problem. You did well and things like that

      Do you tutor because you are not making alot of sense here to be completly honest with you
      A teacher should be cool and laidback and still motivate the student there is no need to be cocky
      Cocky tutors are the reason why im not a ceo yet

      Angel,
      I understand. I am 5ft 2, so I completely understand the concern. You just have to remember that you are in charge of the situation. Make sure to stay in charge, and be firm when necessary. Let the students do group work and have them do work separetly as well when they are trying out problems. The students will recognize your authority, you just have to believe in your own authority.

      Haha thank you! My students don't always think I'm cool :p. It is really about repetition. A lot of younger students struggle with retention. My suggestion would be to start a lesson with a couple things you covered from the previous lesson and end every lesson with a re-cap of what you covered that day. Also, make sure that the students are engaging with you (ie shouting out answers, writing down concepts, repeating things back to you). Good luck!

    • @MakethemMainstream
      @MakethemMainstream  5 років тому +1

      Yes, definitely! I have tutored people my age a lot. I have even tutored people who are older than me. Basically, just go into the situation without even addressing their age. Don't make a big deal out of it. People who are seeking tutors, don't typically care what your age is, they only care about your experience. Your students are looking for help, and people who are aware enough that they need help are aware that others could be further along in that subject than they are. Comand respect by coming in prepared and coming into the situation as the expert. I hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions.

    I personally do think sometimes it can be okay to be jokilly cocky. Me for example, every now and then I'll ''grill'' a student when they make a very dumb slip up, and I think it can also ease off tension especially for new clients. Being up your own arse is a bad thing for SURE, but having a bit of banter can forge a good relationship with them at the same time.

      @MakethemMainstream  5 років тому +4

      At the very first session, I always ask what they are struggling with and ask for copies of past tests and homeworks. It is important to tailor everything to that student because that is the beauty of private tutoring and what they are paying for. You come with your expertise and then tailor each lesson to the student. You can always course-correct along the way

      You are going to do amazing! If you are taking high school classes, and you are in 6th grade, you are very qualified. But it is okay to forget how to do some things. I am constantly looking up how to do something in a tutoring session. It is much better to say, "I am not sure how to do this, let's find out together." and give them the correct information, then to pretend you know what you are doing. Plus, teaching a topic is much different than learning how to do it. If you need any help, please let me know :)

      I just created a free eBook that teaches people how to be a tutor: mailchi.mp/10934ed1e53e/4stepguide. You may find that helpful as well. Please let me know if there is anything that I can create to help you in your tutoring journey.
      I am glad that you think I am funny haha

    Im trying to get in the military but i have failed the asvab twice now can I find a tutor who can help me prepare for when I take the test again?

    • @MakethemMainstream
      @MakethemMainstream  5 років тому

      Good luck with your next test. I don't have any personal experience taking the ASVAB or tutoring people who are going to take it, so the best advice I have for you is to look for tutors in your area or asking the recruiting office what their recommendations are. You can probably find someone to tutor you in the ASVAB by looking up "ASVAB tutors" on google :)
