  • Hi all! We wanted you to officially meet William, our Amish hired man! Today Brenda is going along with William as he does some of the daily chores on the farm, and hearing a little about William's life growing up and working with draft horses!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Yes, Jim is going to have to reprogram the horses, could you imagine what's going through those experienced horses minds, ah ha, they will iron it out.. (I had to look at the comments to see if I was loosing my mind ah ha.)
William seems like a good guy, nice fella..

A friend of mine tried to get my dogs to gee and haw back to front, but they would not do it. The dogs were only casually trained, for fun, I wasn't doing serious work with them

@@johnkomosa9508 I think the horses have already figured out that when William says it it means the opposite. Maybe he should just keep doing it that way. Doing it correctly now might confuse them. 🤔

Hey Jim and Brenda and William, It was really enjoyable to watch William loading loose hay for the cows and unloading into the feeder in the pasture. the feeder is a great answer for the horses and cows to feed from ,it'll definitely cut down on wastage . Yes I did picked up on William getting his Gee and Haw crossed up. Jim your so correct to solve the important issue with him when all your mature horses like ken and lady are trained the proper commands. . I really like the skoot and the working box for hay and firewood and etc. William's carpentry skills are fantastic on the barn repairs which are hard to keep up with your and Brenda's busy schedule.

William is such an asset to the farm with his horse skills, building and repair, and farm chores. He seems to really enjoy his work with Jim, Brenda, and all the animals. Not saying Jim is getting older; but it is a blessing to have such a fine employee because there is so much to do on the farm now with all the new additions and the horses do need to work. And his wife’s quilts are GORGEOUS!!!!

It was nice meeting William and seeing him do some of the work around the place rather than just being mute in the background, I understand that there are some cultural issues with William and his beliefs around being filmed, but I hope he may be able to feel more comfortable with it in the future. Skippy is a real little character and is great to see him running about with you hopefully won't get too close to those horses' big hooves. I think that is the first time I have ever seen Jim all brushed up and relaxed. Thanks to you Brenda for all the running around you do to try and cover all the action for us.

That was a nice change of Pace from the usual stuff you show and I enjoyed that nicely . And I'm glad to see at the end I was not losing my mind!. when William took Lady and Ken out of the barn and turned them right with Ha. and then left with Gee ???? I thought to myself "Have I been hearing that wrong all this time? even when he backed them up to the barn to load hay. he used it there also and the rest of the trip down to the feeder and back. So at the end when Jim got on and explained that it made all the sense in the world.I"m sure he will get it down pat soon. (Boy I do not miss working in hay mow's don't miss that dust at all!. Thanks for shairing ECF

William is doing a great job picking up the slack for you. One thing that does make me nervous is when Skippy runs out in the road. Maybe he could be taught to stay on the shoulder. I would hate for any harm to come to him. It only takes once. He’s a great little farm dog so far, almost like he was born to it. Anyway, it was a great day spending time with William and Brenda.

I noticed the Gee/Haw that William was using and thought I was going crazy for questioning in my mind. The horses seemed to respond correctly to the direction he wanted. I guess they must have been responding more to line pressure on the bits versus the voice direction? I enjoyed the video and appreciate William allowing the video of him. Lastly, I noticed in the show notes your list of horses and breeds but NO BRI. :) You will hurt her feelings if you don't add her, even if she is a mix.

William is GREAT asset to the farm and I'm sure he will learn quickly how to gee and haw correctly. He is a great carpenter as well. Those quilts are beautiful! With people saying about William and filming him, he may have had permission from his elders, particularly if they are of the New Order, to use technology for business use ONLY. So he is a hired hand, and Jim and Brenda are website/social media owners, helping him sell sheds and other things he builds, to give William and Jim some of the earnings they sold. So lets help them out with buying sheds, feeders, coop houses and quilts, homemade things his wife makes for the public. So at the end of his work day, everything technology stays on Jim's farm and William can go home with his non tech methods.

I remember my days on the farm in winter and a wooden plank snowplow that attached to the side of the bobsled. When the bobsled rotted out, my grandfather added a second plank to the plow and reinforced it to use alone behind a single horse. He plowed the driveway to the barn with it. I rode on top of the plow as ballast. I think you could add a side plank on one or both sides of the scoot to plow the yard around the farm. It could be hinged with a long pin for easy attachment and locked in place with a steel rod or a post. I'm sure William could rig up something. Back in the 40s and 50s, we really needed something like that before snowblowers and front end loaders. It would be another way to exercise the horses, maybe making trails down back and thru the woods.

I loved the video...still get to see beautiful draft horses work..... A real treat to see William working with Lady & Ken. And...I thought I was so confused about the Ge & Keep directions____/I almost had myself convinced I was wrong.
And Jim "cleans up good" I almost didn't recognize him right away in that leather chair wearing his "good clothes"....Ha Good finishing touch to the show. If you do more plus add Jim's over view at the end. Adorable.
The only thing that bothers me is Skippy being allowed to run on the horses and nip at the horses hooves. I am not a dog trainer, but I think he should be stopped from doing this while he is still young.

    • @uteschneider3349
      @uteschneider3349 4 місяці тому +1

      Das denke ich auch.

I picked up on the gee haw as well. A few years back a nice young lady asked why I was using Gee for right and Haw for left, as that was backwards from how she had been trained. She learned in England and Europe, so perhaps there are some places where the words are reversed.

I get very nervous watching Skippy chasing the horses. We had a dog on the farm that liked to follow the tractor like that. My grandfather took the tractor and mower up the lane to cut hay. On the way he trimmed weeds along the pasture. He didn't see it but the dog chased after him and right in front of the mower blades. It took her leg off and he had to have her put down. I saw it all. Another stray dog came to our farm, a beagle, and had a litter of 9 pups. She followed me up the main road as I went to another farm to pick up a load of hay. As I turned the corner onto a dirt road, she darted right in front of the tractor and the rear wheel ran over her and killed her. I guess that's why I get so worried about Skippy when Jim starts mowing hay if he doesn't get trained now.

Thank goodness you said something. Whew! I get a kick out of Skippy, Mr. Hot Shot of the property now. He went ripping into the cat area like a terrorist. But it looked like the cows have his number when one stepped out to give him a head on challenge. Mr. Terrorist indeed. Good thing Skippy is fast on his feet!😂 I'm wondering if your bracing for extreme cold like we are at the N.Jearsey border. Will you be putting all the horses inside? brrrrr. Keep safe and warm. ❤

Noticed right away he was asking horses to go wrong way. Not the end of the world and eventually he can correct that. He seems like a good worker! Brenda needs her own mic on occasions like this.
    Ken still has major gas!

William is such a good farm hand. He does a good job in his carpentry and is good with the horses! I thought once i noticed he said "gee" but he turned left. His wife's quilts are lovely!!!!!❤ Do they have children? Hope Jim had a good day at PSmith's cutting timber with the B Team!!

Picked up on the gee and haw when he left the barn…thank goodness the team was trained! When I was learning gee and haw… right is a phonically softer tone so is gee…haw was phonically harsher (left).

That was a fun video. William seems really good with the horses. I do business with several Amish here in northeastern Maryland and find them to be very hard working sincere people. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Fun to meet William! It's great to have good dependable help!
What a difference to see Jim in an easy chair!! I'll bet it was after a day of work in the woods!! 😊
I never understood which command was in what, so I didn't notice he was doing it wrong. Yeah, that would be confusing to the horses! Maybe he can write the words on his hands till they are automatic!! That's what I'd do!! Lol!! Great video!! 💕

William seems to be very content working on the farm & very good with the horses. The horses seems very content with William & what William is having them do. Nice to meet you, William. Good job!! Skippy loves being in the middle of things & works well with the horses. He sure doesn't seem to be afraid of them or the cows. He is going to be a Great farm hand too!! God Bless Working Horses with Jim & Brenda

I noticed when he was turning the team in the road after securing the cow pasture opening that he was saying haw while swinging the horses to the right. I thought it was strange. Otherwise, he seems to be a nice, hard working young man. I recently found your videos and thoroughly enjoy watching them. I'm an old broken down crippled lady, ... but when I was younger, while I did enjoy riding horses, my passion was single hitch cart driving. I only used breast plate harness so these heavy work harnesses with collars I find fascinating. Only thing missing on your sleigh video with Baron was sleigh bells! What a beautiful sleigh! I never owned one. I had to use my two wheeled training cart, but in the winter time, I still threw on the sleigh bells! Anyway, ..... I'm sure am glad I found your website! God Bless! - ACD
