I wanted to develop a small but mighty benchtop router table, that has more function than a full size version and costs less than you could buy the materials for. But how do we get there? Today I wanted to give you a look at the product development process. Check out this video, where we take you on a journey from the concept phase to the final product!
When I started working with Tamar from 3x3 Custom on the 6 in 1 Universal Trim Router Jig I knew we had something amazing. One of the uses we talked about in the launch video was how you could use it as a makeshift router table. That worked great but had its limitations. This is a behind the scenes look at how we developed this router table to be one of the most versatile and functional products we've ever made. In this video, we'll show you everything about the development process, from the design process to the final product!
Let me know what you’d like to see next! Please like, comment and subscribe.

You sold me always wanted a router and table, couldn’t afford the wood store prices. This looks
Ike a great deal. Tom
KM loved the channel for a long time as a wodworker. But this video hits another level. I am a high school engineering teacher and this is getting shown tomorrow. I know you are a busy man but if you would ever be interested in doing a qa chat with stundents interested in engineering and design let me know. No worries if not, thanks for the great insights.
This is what exactly need it, Is it possible to pay extra to a full assembled jig. When do you plan to release the dust extraction for this unit?
@@hanskeim7001 yeah I'd love to. email me support@kmtools.com and they'll forward to me. Tell them I sent you or it might end up getting filtered. Cheers
Great behind-the scenes peak. A true company mission statement focusing on the customer's needs first. Quality and affordability: A Win-Win!
Thank you my friend
Holy moly, that’s the best “mini” router table ok the market! Absolutely amazing work.
Absolutely love this. It's awesome getting to see the behind the scenes for this product, and I love that your goal is to make woodworking accessible instead of price gouging everyone. I'm sure you could, but you don't, and I really appreciate it. Keep being awesome!
Yes please do more videos, some years ago i had taken a dilapidated garage and pulled the floor out and replaced the broken joist and put the floor back down the right way and began building a shop of my own. I couldn’t afford much so i got some old run down falling apart or missing parts of radial arm saw, table saw, router, belt sander, drill, and various hand tools from yard sales and family and practically lived in my shop. I made a router table similar to yours and made it interchangeable with a bandsaw, and turned the belt sander upside down housed in its own cradle and just swapped out witch ever one i needed. But i dont have any of my tools anymore and dont have anywhere to build a shop again so i watch shows like yours and live vicariously through them. I enjoyed the journey from idea to distribution and the lessons learned along the way. Ill be watching and following you to see what comes next, and i am glad to hear your teaching the younger generations and including kids with disabilities. I taught my kids how to work safely in my shop and to respect the machinery and they helped me out and learned a thing or two along the way. Sorry for the long story i just ment to thank you for sharing you story, it made me remember the days gone by working in my shop. Thanks sincerely Steve Loriot
Thanks for the behind the scenes. As woodworkers we know what goes into making furniture, boxes, etc., and compare to Ikea or whatever. You showed us that manufacturing takes a whole lot of skill and time as well. Super appreciate your emphasis on affordability. I've got your apron, urethane dovetail guide and sharpening jig, all of them are fantastic. Keep crushing it!
For those who have no idea about 3D modeling, there is a Fusion 360 course from the people at I Like To Make Stuff.
Jonathan I’ve watched a ton of your videos over the years and always enjoyed the experience. I rarely comment on videos but seeing the passion and care for the end consumer (price included) is very refreshing. Best of luck and continued success to you and your team!
At the top of my Christmas List.
Santa baby won’t you hurry down the chimney tonight
Textbook example of product development done right. Here’s what I noticed. Customer engagement throughout. Validated as much design as you could before going to prototypes. Core values that gave you a north star and what done means. Iterating over the design process. Incorporating feedback. Delivering on the core values (strength, price, guide pin, or whatever you wrote down for yourself). Demonstrating the cool new thing and providing training. There was a ton more behind the scenes in the manufacturing process design for quality and scale I’m sure. I’m going to share this with my colleagues who are Product Managers. Some really good stuff they way you did this and thank you for sharing. BTW if it fits my router I’m buying one. It’s exactly what I need at the moment. Great job, Jonathan!
Means a lot. Thank you my friend
This video was really interesting. Thank you for this!
I liked how you showed the whole development process, from conception, design and prototyping to the efficiency optimizing, listening and getting a feel of what peoples tastes are, the manufacturing side and then finally, the pricing and filling any room leftover, where you can be bringing even more value.
That was really cool, I find. Cuz the selling and marketing is all there already, by the product’s kick-assness, the video itself and your brand. Knowing full well, the work’s not done there, by concluding on the acknowledgment that addressing feedback Is important, so leaving it is very helpful, as it gives you the opportunity to improve yourself, the products and the customer’s experience.
Point is, in summary, that seeing all the various hats worn that the process takes; and that you can pretty much maintain your demeanor, your approach and the company’s principles.. was insightfully motivating. Your carpentry core was still strongly there, but I really enjoyed seeing it surprisingly different and you still delivering awesome. Solid.
Thank you so much my friend
I bought the Tamar 3x3 router jig and not only was I impressed with the finished quality of the product but was totally blown away by the care and thought that went into the packaging to ship it to me. That may not be a big thing to a lot of people but having gotten all manner of products shoddily thrown in a box just to get it out the door I was so pleased when I opened yours that it made the rest of the assembly process a delight. Not once did I have one of those "Well, crap, where the heck is that doohickey that's on the instructions" moments.
That’s so good to hear!
The algorithm is crazy! I just bought my first router 2 days ago and this table is exactly what I need. Ordering it right now!
Great video, love to hear how others go through the design, prototyping and eventual manufacturing process.
Also brings me joy to see small businesses collaborate!
Working with Tamar has been great!
This was a fantastic video of how things began to now. It seems like such a simple thing to develop your own product, but there are so many things that can be overlooked. Thank you for taking us through your mindset throughout the process and sharing your story.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you
I agree with your comment 100%! I have a small shop, so have been reluctant to add a router table because most small tables lack functionality and the large ones take up sooooo much space. Patrick Sullivan designed a bench top router table here on UA-cam that looks great and functional, and THIS table is remarkably similar in size and functionality. I have been planning to build one from Patrick’s plans, but before I could get started on that, this product from JKM has come out… so I’ve ordered this kit today. The fact that it utilizes Tamar’s excellent 6-in-1 base plate makes it a no-brainer!
What an awesome product! You have come such a long way and are really making an impact in the industry. Great job!
Been watching for a long time, pretty awesome to see the growth of your business over the years, your tools and jigs have always been top notch, well thought out, and pleasing to use. I like playing spot-the-katz-moses-tool in all the other woodworker videos I watch, I see that stop block everywhere. Thank you for taking us through this process, very informative, and keep up the good work, you're making everyone's hobby and business easier and more enjoyable. Cheers!
This was great. Loves seeing how the sausage is made
Hahaha 🤣 yes!
Fantastic video of not only showing development behind the scenes but introducing a great new product. I have the Tamar jig and it is great. Well done!
Yeah it’s a great little tool. Thanks so much. I really appreciate it!
Wow. On my birthday wish list. The only item on my list.
I, like others, already had Tamar's router jig and thought about building a mini router table for it. When I saw yours and all that's included with it I thought just buy it and I'm glad I did. I modified it slightly and added a three inch base which allows for a larger clamping surface to my work bench and permits my Dewalt router with the thick 5 amp battery to be removed without unclamping the unit when I want to change router bits. Thanks Johnathan for all you do to help hobbyist woodworkers. Nice video!
Ordered mine today super excited to level up my small workspace.
love your ideology! woodworking for everybody! thanks for your implication and sharing the knowledge!
Jonathan, I have spent 20 years developing Medical devices (Pathology tests to select cancer therapeutics for patients) and it was refreshing to see someone else that lives the Product Development Lifestyle! A sounds process, backed by Customer input, Marketing requirements, design requirements, design changes and product launch is just good business! Be it a router table or a test that will determine a cancer patients therapeutic pathway, product development process will result in the correct product for your customer base. Thanks!
Thank you so much my friend
Dude. great look behind the curtain. Nicely done!
It's an advertorial but with real value, so kudos to you. It's great on two levels. First, Tamara followers are loving seeing her thrive and her innovation pay off and secondly you are showing us the value added in product creation. Plus you really have spotted what's needed. You have identified things I can really use that I have festered over designing myself. Bravo, saved to my workshop playlist when I can get round to the makeover :)
I've been wanting a router table for a while but never could decide on one until just now! Both you and Tamar did an awesome job with this product. I will be ordering soon.
As my shop space evolves and the desire for more tools continues I see the value in some of the tools getting smaller while still retaining features. This small and portable router table appears to accomplish that. I like the quality of tools offered on your website. I purchased the 6-IN-ONE Router Jig have been pleased with it. Nice to see you developing tools and jigs that make each more functional. I won’t be getting rid of my larger router cabinet yet. I will add this to my “Tools to Aquire” list. Keep up the great work!
I really appreciate you my friend
Great behind the scenes video. I love seeing things like this and you being humble enough to show us how its all done.
God Bless you brother, keep up the good work.
Very, very cool. I look forward to getting one of these tables soon. Great video!
Mine shipped yesterday. I'm pretty excited
i liked the inside look of the development process. I also really value the collaboration with other creators and the added value that it brings. Thanks!
Pretty cool and not a bad price really. I kind of enjoy the process of making my own stuff but this brings a valuable tool to everyone for a reasonable price.
Hi KM. Wow, this is a magnificent product in conjunction with Tamara 3x3 customs router jig. It's a well thought out and designed movable router table. I love the versatility of this product. The strength is amazing, and seeing the rear end of the vehicle not collapsing due to the strength and design of the product speaks volumes. Great job 👍. Take care. From South Africa
Quality on this video is something else! Also the transparency is refreshing! Awesome job. Don't think I've seen this channel before. Subscribed!
I haven’t watched the vid yet, but I placed my order. Thank you and the whole team. ✌️
Yes! Thank you
Awesome, ordering mine today, I already have the 6 in 1 Trim Router Jig. Thanks for another fine product that makes woodworking easier and more enjoyable.
Great video to see behind the scenes of how you guys went about making this router table. And the amazing tools you make. Keep up the great work
What a great follow up to the router jig. The benefits of collaboration are often overlooked. You hit both products out of the park.
Thanks for sharing your process for product development. I have enjoyed your videos for the way you break down builds and even show your mistakes and how to fix them. This video really helps me think about a product I am considering and how to develop. Keep up the great content.
Loved this ‘behind the scenes’ video. I had already seen your product but the video has convinced me of getting a portable table now. Such high quality work and video production.
This was the best way to announce a new product. Definitely keep doing this. Router table seems great
Bought the router table last weekend, delivered to the UK in 4 days, took me a little longer to build but boy, the router table is the best.
Great work KM. Love the thought process you went thru as well as prototyping.
This was really interesting. Thanks for sharing all this information.
Great video. This is very insightful. Thanks for helping smalltime woodworkers!!!
I think you're the man, Jonathan! Keep doing what you're doing my friend!! And take care, until next time!
I think this was a great video! I loved hearing your product development process and getting to see behind the scenes. I am in the process of pivoting my business from custom furniture into small-scale manufacturing, so this video provided some excellent insight into what that could potentially look like. Thanks for sharing, JKM! - Joe
Incredible product and awesome video. Thanks for what you do for us!
what a wonderful video -- thank you! You were instrumental in getting me happily through the lockdown and, while I don't have as much time to make sawdust these days I still love these videos which are clearly made with as much care as the woodworking.
Thank you my friend
REALLY enjoyed this behind the scenes look jonathan! keep up the awesome work man!
Thanks brother
Nicely done and presented well. I reckon I need one of these.
Yes you do!
Jonathan, thank you for providing this video. I was on the fence, no pun intended and this sealed the deal. I'll be ordering mine when next SS check arrives. Can't wait. Thank you for your service to our Country and to all of us.
ScottyD
Thanks for an awesome video explaining the process from idea to manufacturing. You have built another fine product, and I look forward to seeing how it evolves from user feedback. Thanks for what you do!
Thank you very much! Cheers my friend
My workbench is still an MDF sawhorse table on my balcony, so seeing this really made my day. I can't wait to get my hands on this and the 6-in-1 Jig. Soon, I hope!
Great work on the idea, the vid and how you worked with Tamar Jonathan. Really well done. Thank you so much too on how to go from concept to useful product! Looking forward to ordering the combo kit!
Really like the walk-through of conception to development. Great product!
Following up upon receiving this: what a great product! It really fits my needs as a small space minimalist woodworker and it was so easy to assemble and get started with. Great customer service too I cannot stress that enough with your team.
Great to hear!
Just ordered mine … cant wait!
Great video of an idea to the final product. I run a small personal woodshop and I am always looking for ways to take my limited tools to the next level to make my projects more professional. Thank you for all you do.
A few minutes ago I watched Tamara put this slick little table together. Awesome work my friend.
Just a thought. I would suggest having the router bits in the vertical edges so that when you are reaching in to install /release / adjust the router, you aren't reaching over sharp hazardous bits. Other than that, cute functional bench
Thanks for explaining the development process along with the product. It was interesting to hear how went about creating your product, developed some guiding principles for the end product and discovered what works and what doesn't. The story contributes to the product.
This was really interesting, thanks for sharing the details of your process!
Love this approach, hope to see more of these in the future!
Outstanding explanation of the birth to complete product. Inspiring Thanks JKM
Great video. It is fascinating seeing the whole process. Thanks.
Love it Jonathan! Well done. More like this please.
Amazing video! Working on a router table insert for a table saw for a friend and watched this one for some ideas. Glad I did, lot of great information for the design piece in addition to the build. Keep up the great work
This thing looks brilliant, just ordered one. I'd been meaning to pick up the jig for a project I'm working on but hadn't gotten around to it, so this solves that issue as well.
That looks amazing.
I invented a small wooden inlaid latch that I sell to woodworkers and this helped a lot...some great knowledge about process to market. I spoke with Izzy on the phone as well and his recommendations were VERY helpful. I have a video on my channel about it and how to install it. Hopefully some day, my content will be as good as yours...lol. Thanks for this deep dive.
My pleasure and good luck on your product. Cheers
This is exactly what I need. Thank you!
That was cool and different. Product development is very interesting to me. Thanks for sharing the development process. I hope to do do some product development in the future! Really enjoy the channel, keep bringing it!
You're amazing Jonathan! Thank You!
You rock!
man, you and Tamar are in a league all your own
Love these videos Jonathan. Keep it up. 🤘
Wow! Such a great product and really interesting to see how to made it happen. Thank you
Awesome product and look at design.
Awesome! Loved the video and the behind the scenes insight. Keep it up. 👍
What a team you and Tamar make! I purchased the plans for the router jig last year and made a mess of the acrylic due to my compromises in cutting methods (stone tools). It is still functional, but there is a forgiveness in wood that just doesn't exist in acrylic. Your jig and table are my next tool purchase. I am also excited to use the fore and aft wings that you left on the top to drop this into one of my work tables--clever design that evolution.
Mate, looks outstanding and your doing a great job. keep 'em coming.
Exciting stuff! Looking forward to the next product!
Pretty slick, I’ll put it on the list
Laid up with a smashed knee. Your videos are really making me feel better. Thank you
Feel better brother
Awesome, great look at the journey behind the scenes! Looks like a great product
My guy! Thanks so much. Appreciate you.
These are great prices too... very nice work!
Awesome video and to top it off a great small router jig. Keep up the good work.
I already had Tamar’s router jig and ordered one of the KM tables as soon as I saw it. They go together perfectly and I find I’m using it far more than I originally anticipated. Very interesting to see how the project evolved. Thanks!
I love the great feedback. Thank you
You take this very serious. I want to get your products. I am actually a newbie interested in woodworking and I think I made the right choice subscribing to your channel. Great video ❤
Great product!
Love it, just what I was after aaaaand preordered!
Thank you so much my friend
Just scrolling through videos here at my firehouse, which im currently building training props for, and I come up on this gem! Holy shit!!! Pardon my french, but this is exactly I need! Already have the 6 in 1 jig also..brilliant! Thank yall for all the hard work yall put in!
Looks great. Your router jig has worked great for me and the price was much appreciated
Very informative on product development, and I did enjoy it. But, I always look forward to build videos.
looking forward to buying this on my next paycheque. :D
Great job! I need one.
Great video my friend 👊
Loved this content
