My dad had to get up really early for work, so we never stayed up late enough to watch Carson and Letterman. But we watched Live at Five, and when Dave would do this, my parents were always like "Who the hell is this guy?" 😂
Paul Shaffer's comment at the :26 mark is just priceless. "That's funny, because I used to be a swimsuit model." So totally indicative of the brotherly chemistry Dave and Paul had and why us old school Letterman heads just love the guy. Perfect foil for Dave and he got the up and coming bands on the show back in the day BEFORE they broke it big. REM's first performance was just wonderful.
Elevator races witj Bob Costas, Chris Elliot sketches, dropping watermelons from the roof, etc. Those were the genius of Letterman in the 80s. Can remember watching him as a teenager, no one like then and since.
Yeah, he was still funny when I was in diapers, but it wasn't until I got into the double-digits in years that I started to watch late-night TV and by then Dave's show was kinda... meh. I mean it happens with age, you can't go around harassing everyone for fun forever, you don't have the energy for that as you get older, but it's a shame because I never got to see him in his prime until UA-cam. I gotta say, though, I finally get it.
OMG...I love these vids that remind us of back in the day when Dave was just a scream and there were those people like Al Roker who recognized the fun of it all and played along.
And that was Katie Kelley who was a regular on Live at 5 who finally let Dave him. I hope somebody made amends or at least apologized to BenBen who was just following orders. Control Rooms and Producers famously HATE when this happens, devoted they are to rundown sheets and stop watches which is perfectly understandable. But they lose how spontaneity breaks the predictable format which can be numbing to the audience. I've seen it myself when I worked in television. It's how the star deals with the "out-of-the-blue" that the audience loves, like when things would go wrong Regis & Kathie Lee and decades earlier on Ernie Kovacs. Notice how Al Roker, a true broadcaster, gets it and welcomes him. Roker didn't become a household name for 40 years by not understanding television. When Carson was in New York in the 60's, he used to do the same thing to Roker's predecessor, Dr. Frank Fields, whom Johnny would have fun with him in his monologue referring to him as "Crack Meteorologist Dr. Frank Fields." Fields was totally local and few knew him outside of New York. Early Carson would occasionally barge in on Dr Fields during his weathercast - or trying to - on WNBC. But as far as I remember, it was totally just for us watching at the time; not for a bit on "Tonight." On one intrusion, I recall, Johnny stood behind Dr. Fields and goosed him repeatedly with his wooden pointer.
Hey Luke, try doing something with your life and besides you're talking in the present tense to something that happened over 30 years ago AND you think that Dave is reading your comment?
Hot ones brought me here.
Mal Praktiss same

I never knew how funny Dave was earlier on in his career. "I can't leave the house until I know what the barometric pressure is"
Jamie Craighead he got real rusty after what happened to him with NBC
I was the same way about Johnny Carson. My mom would say "You don't realize how funny he was in the first 10 years."
You must be really young.

Thank you Hot Ones!
For real!
What you didn't see was that this was the first time that Sue Simmons said, "What the f&%$ are you doin'?" live on the air.
Is there tape of that🤔
"Oh yeah, hide behind me, Al. That'll work!"
Back when the show was awesome! My mate 80s Dave was my fav. When he did all the funny stunts.
OMG...I love these vids that remind us of back in the day when Dave was just a scream and there were those people like Al Roker who recognized the fun of it all and played along.
I like how he didn’t steam roll the page even though he totally could’ve.
"Ben - as in has-Ben."
1:30 Dave was such a BOSS back then, pulling the guy by his tie!
Thanks Hot Ones
lol he grabbed his tie. "What's his name?" "Ben" "Ben...Ben....as in Has Ben"
Thanks alot Al, and now back to Regis and Kathy Lee
A $15/hour page has to tell a $10 Million/year Letterman--he can't enter!

Thanks for posting.
I'm glad Al is healthy now - but I so miss the fluffy Al!
Those pissed off anchors didn't realize Al Roker would become a household name.
This was too funny, I miss late night TV from my youth.
lol back to Regis and Kathy Lee! 4:32
News anchors didn't look happy that David was their.
Any show produced at 30 Rock when Dave was there were terrified he would walk in on them. He had the habit.
Their what?
THERE*
was THERE, not their.
5:08 "That page... page.. page, what's the name of that page?"
That was the time when Al Roker had just discovered the gyro stand immortalized in Seinfeld.

"You gotta page out there with an attitude problem by the way..."
Now this is comedy.

Sue Simmons known for local NY news and rumored to been lovers with Jessica Savitch.
He still is, it's the US that got too serious.
This was before he went to CBS!

@@Danimal77 Dan it’s the equivalent of watching a UA-cam music video and hundreds of people have to tell where they watched the video. Annoying.
what year is this?
1987
@@mathomas12171981 No, February 1988. It says it in the description.
