It's amazing how much Letterman really enjoyed skits where people insulted or booed him.
Shortly after Alan Kalter passed away, I googled him, looking for interviews, Late Show skits, etc., involving him, and I found a 2015 interview with one of the anchors at WCBS-TV. This interview aired a few months before Dave called it quits. Alan was asked how Dave liked some of the verbal abuse he got from Alan, and Alan said Dave asked him to do it!
Clearly, Dave is someone who does not take himself too seriously.
@@steve760 I read a similar article where it said they'd rehearse slamming Dave for a skit, and then he'd say the insults flying at him weren't mean enough, so they'd get more creative.
He absolutely loves it. I made a similar comment on an Alan Kalter Celebrity Interview video. His face was pure Joy as Alan torched him lol. Rip Big Red.
They weren't booing. They were just chanting "Dave!!!"
Self deprecation seems to have been a prerequisite to work for Dave & Co. Many of our guests seem to take delight in it.
What makes this even funnier for me is on the Lyle the Intern video, he said he never spoke to Dave other than his appearances on the show.. So these may be the only interactions this guy had with Dave haha

I was once at a work Christmas party when a guy got good & liquored up & tore into the owner/boss in similar fashion... only his tirade lasted a good ten minutes. Said owner/boss was a justly deserving recipient too! It was epic... :)
This guy has the best job ever.
This went on for 11 minutes and never got old for me. I think that I was laughing more by the end than I was at the start.
In studio audiences loved the guy.

Our favorite part. Second was Dave’s off the cuff quips, but Big Red always was the payoff.

You can say that again. I live in Paul's hometown, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and the vulgarity isn't all that excessive. 🙂

Our host is Canadian, and he says he certainly gets that a lot. “Feels like home,” he said.
You can clearly see on Paul‘s face that he is shocked and dismayed.
They forgot the one when he’s like “You’re out of time? I’ve came here from Philadelphia, I paid $100, I was in line for 2 hours and you’re telling me that you’re out of time?!!”
ive requested that clip for the fri viewer choice the past few weeks.
and he had driven down from philadelphia, and paid $100 to park his car. i enjoy most looking at other audience members and seeing if there is a glimmer or recognition of whats about to happen.

Two of the best bits for sure. Simple ideas but the execution is just perfect. Late shows don't do this kind of comedy anymore.
