12 Disaster or Dream Sailing Catamaran? What do you see?

- Yes, I'm alive. After 8 months of work I was able to launch a new software application that I built from the ground up for my regular job. Now, I can get back to working on my catamaran, it's going to take a bit longer than 8 months before I launch it 😉⛵ as I generally only work on it on the weekends.
Do you have the vision to see the Antares 44 "the worlds best live aboard" in all it's former glory? or do you just see a disaster?
People like Elon Musk shooting for Mars have vision. I have the vision for my boat. Do you have vision? What do you see?

Don’t worry too much about the quality of the editing for now Bryan. This type of video is great with a mix of pieces to camera, time lapse work, headcam, etc, showing the process of the rebuild. The voiceover is really the key bit to keep everything ties together. Naturalism and your drive and optimism is what sets you apart.
You wanted comment on what we like watching! For me it’s the progress! Doesn’t matter if it’s fiber glassing or just clean and rip stuff out! Just fun to see that it’s going forward! And the voice over you explaining is great
Same! 😎🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺
Peter, spot on.
As for the saving panels, just make 3-piles on each hull (inner hull covered) sides; aft-mid-forward & separated port / starboard.
'We' can see your cleaning, you're getting there!
Not looking for 'high quality,' Bryan. It's the rehabilitation of the boat. This is fascinating.
I agreed, don't waste a bunch of time editing. As long as there is a logical progression throughout its just fine. Most people don't like a bunch of loud music either, try to keep it to the time-lapses if you use any at all.
Agreed.
I think viewers just like to se things get done which is what you seem to be doing. Thanks for sharing. Cheers
The key to UA-cam success is to tell a story. Each "episode" should be a short story to give your viewers the satisfaction to come back for more.
Details on how you fix the items. For example show more and close ups of the fiber glass holes and repair.
i like your videos just as they are
Absolutely wonderful to see you back. The progression is greatly more important than fancy editing, but keep the antics
a nice video, plenty of doing and not just talking. The trick with the hair cut was awesome!
Glad you liked it!
The bit about having vision, very good, well put.
Been waiting for an update, I like time lapse videos, because I can see so much done in 1 video. Looking forward to your next episode.
I just like to see your progress and your voice over commentary. It strangely gives me some vicarious pleasure to see the whole mess getting cleaned and the issues being fixed 🙂. For me frequency of uploads (preferably once a week) is more valuable than absolute quality of edits (you will probably get better at that anyway). Keep up the good work and good luck!
Glad you enjoy it! I'm going to shoot for once a week again
I’m not to fussed with it jumping back & forth between different jobs, it’s all apart of the task! I believe you should used smaller patches first, it’s about strength. Oxalis acid will remove the orange rust stains from any fibreglass surface. Keep up the good work! 😎🏖🌴☀️🇦🇺
Oh, and you’re definitely right about the vision, if you can’t visualise it, it’ll never happen! The vision doesn’t have to be set in stone!
Love your enthusiasm and "vision".
The way you're going about it, it will come together eventually and look like new again. No doubt about that.
Great job.
Cheers
Pete from Downunder.
I like the hair cut. To think back, you towing that boat back from the Caribbean in the condition it was in, was epic, the trials and tribulations you have gone thru to get to this point is monumental, keep up the good work.
Thanks 👍 It's all an adventure
Bryan. Been watching you from the start. Videos are great as they are. You are doing an awesome job. Like the haircut😀😀
You be you, there are so many channels that are the same. Keep on doing what your doing and success will come
Thank you, I will
Love them all, I know that it's a huge project so whatever you record is all good!
Your clarity of "Vision" is awesome Bryan, can't wait to see more.
Hey Brian, You are doing great, and it´s very nice to follow you. Actually i think you should just do everything exactly as you like. Dont ask what we want or like the most. Do as you like and you will enjoy the proces more, witch in terms will make it nicer to watch - you can´t please everyone anyway, so don´t worry about it.
Always gratifying to see before, during and after results of a small project or task. The head/bathroom cleaning was oddly satisfying.
Yes, I feel like I'm finally getting a head on this project.
@@BryanSailing haahaahaa!
Superman for sure!
You remove, rebuild and reinstall engines like it’s super easy
You have a day job, work on the boat, have a family and still have ‘extra time” to edit videos
You built a freaking house! - NO, not a log cabin, a shipping container house or a cute tiny house. But a really nice house!
You dealt with (and are still dealing with) a million obstacles, including comments about your hair, Really?
With all this said, what really fascinated me the most was how you overcame the theft of your stuff. No problem, whatever. The average Joe would have called it quits right at that moment!
God Bless You (am I allowed to say that?) and if I were still living in government housing at Patrick AFB, I’d be helping you out whenever I could!! Keep the videos coming, please.
I really Thank You for the entertaining content.
Thanks for keeping us a part of your experiences. I also appreciate your inspiration on keeping a dream alive.
Bryan you are doing great. Just keep doing what you are doing.. It is very interesting to see the progress you are making. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you! Will do!
Bryan, you do UA-cam your way. The priority is the boat, not what we think about your editing skills. I wish I had your tenacity and vision skills.
I'm really enjoying both the boat work and the channel, if it takes twice as long to fix the boat because of the channel it's all good as long as I'm having fun!
What is more important? The quality of your work on the boat or video editing....... Concentrate on the boat!
Wow great video AGAIN! I was lost in it! Thanks a bunch for sharing your journey! It is fun to watch all the progress! The time lapse shots are great and your voiceovers are good. This is the best rebuild video I have seen to date, you are making progress on the boat and on youtube! Maybe leave a link of the fiberglass company for people to get some help or supplies if they need it, also leave links to any suppliers that help you (if any). And It seems like you have room under the boat for a shed, would it help to have a shed/workshop under there? small bench with a vise and window a/c, a place to drag things in and work on, cheap metal shed maybe. just a thought, thanks again!
Great tips thanks.
Bryan, just show the progress, even a time lapse with voiceover is fine.It shows what’s possible!good luck
Good stuff, keep the videos coming Bryan.
Hang in there Bryan, I enjoy you're videos and I know it's a lot of work but thanks for sharing with us. :) Perfection should never need to be explained.
Glad to see you're back at it! I for one love these "random" videos. Then again I also like your theoretical sections where you'd explain fiberglass strength and what not. I think you should focus on just having fun and putting out the content you feel like rather than trying to be popular :) I'm guessing you'll have more success not just aiming to please. Looking forward to your next video!
Great advice
Long hair is a trademark of a Captain that has adventure in his bones!
Love your videos, also when they are containing glassing etc. Have a look at “sail life” here on you tube, he’s doing the same job as you, but not as extensive
Hi Bryan. I don't know if i'm speaking for all, but many of us would love to see that boat done, and you enjoying it. We experience vicariously through you the process, as many of us fantasising of doing something similar, but either lack the courage, skills or resources to engage in such a project. We are also sometimes messy, and we also sometimes have bad hair, make mistakes, or be whatever, so don't worry about changing yourself, just keep letting us living the experience through you. Thanks!
We love watching people work and learn from it!
Love what you are doing, Bryan, and the videos that you make are very informative. I believe that your vision does show through and provides a light at what is going to be a very long tunnel. Keep up the good work .
I appreciate that!
I like a mix of stuff. Time lapse and a voice over is great for when you do something long and tedious to do.
I enjoy watching whenever you get a video out
Whatever you film is interesting. It is amazing to watch order appear from chaos. You have my admiration.
Thanks. Did you see some order in there? I think I missed it I still feel everything is in chaos.
I hope you are taking pictures of everything so it will be easier to put together again later. Admire your vision.
Not many pics, but I am making a few videos, maybe I'll share some. Seriously I keep all my raw footage and only about 20% of it ends up in my UA-cam videos, it's great reference
I appreciate the narration overlapping the video. It gives greater insight into the project. You do a good job keeping things moving and adding just enough detail. Thx
I appreciate that!
Dude, just keep doing what your doing...and maybe sell your hair-do in your swag shop. Glad you’re back. As a matter of fact, maybe you can promise not to cut your hair until you’re finished or you hit 50k subs. It would make an interesting video next hurricane season. 😂😂👍👍
I personally love these types of videos, Great job.
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for the video update and the smile! The beginning of the video made me laugh. Here is the deal, you be you fix your boat and keep making videos. Good to go sir. Fair winds.
I think one of the hardest things is the range of skills you need to do a boat rebuild. You have built a house so you understand.
Also that vision has to be with a plan , sound Like you hope to rebuild back to as it was which should help a lot, if you start changing too much it will bite you on your butt for sure!
As to videos a believe a theme works well a sort of start to finish even if it was actually spread over a month or more , that’s just the way projects are. If you want to do a what happened this week then you really have to up to date , be consistent with the out put and continuity which will be very hard .... huge project! cheers Warren
Thanks for the advice I plan to get consistent on the videos again now that my project at work is done.
I see your subscribers or almost up to 8,000 I can remember when you were a few hundred and we're talking about stopping the videos You're doing great videos and it is interesting but I will congratulate you on your patience and be that way with your subscribers no time at all you'll break to 10,000 mark and be marching on up to more subscribers like me keep them coming
It's been a fun adventure, thanks for being with me since the beginning.
I love this length of video (10-15 min) and balance of timelapses with narration and real-time clips.
Awesome, thank you!
Oh my God I shouldn’t have smoked that joint you come out with the new haircut change your look so much and then I had to get used to your new look in fast forward oh my God what a trip. I really love your show I just found it today so I’ve already watched one through 12 you are a great craftsman we will all watch thisAnd follow this journey with you. We are patient and we all work for a living we understand how hard it is to come up with time to do what you’re doing Lord knows it’s hard to get anything done and film it at the same time anyways we love you man.
I watch your videos simply because I want a big catamaran like yours to liveaboard.. and trying to figure out how to repair my future hurricane damaged cat that I'll probably never be able to afford..😉😉
Hi,
I like your determination to finish this project. If I was there I would come give you a hand. Unfortunately I’m in United Kingdom.
Respect 🙌
Just do what you want , I like everyone of the videos you made. It’s help those of us that want to do boat projects.
Small Victories that one can look. Are what can keep you pushing on. While working on Long Battles It is good to Pick a Battle you can defeat and reap that Quick Success to Help Fight Longer Jobs.
I like the commentary of what you are doing. FYI... I too am a computer programmer (over 30 years now) so I always enjoy the challenge of the adventure. Liked your Haircut skit. :)
Kia Ora Bryan from Auckland, NZ. I enjoy your crazy nothing will beat me attitude, your posts remind me of building my last cat with crap everywhere but now hey presto I’m sailing a beautiful catamaran at last! All the best, Rog from FerrariSailing
That hair montage was genius. You've got a real job on your hands there! I've recently started a similar project in a 60ft steeling sailing yacht. It's good to know there are others out there with similarly massive projects! Great video.
Love the video...for me it's the progress, in whatever stages. What separates your channel from some others I've watched right off the bat, you show the process of what works and what didn't work. For example, remaking a wood storage under the boat, why you are keeping the wood when others would have thrown it out. Seeing that part of the process more than just fiber glassing is fascinating and Kudos to you! You built a storage rather than whipped down to the hardware store to buy something that "might" work.
Wow in 1990 era I revamped a neglected for a decade 34 foot cat with outboard 35 hp sailed Ireland to canary islands but your project is huge good luck
Possible variation on your method: Your templates. Get a roll of inkjet paper (it's like drafting paper in rolls but sometimes cheaper and easier to find.) By using white that you can kind of see through, it's easier to draw the outline. Then just make concentric shapes an inch or so inside. I did this when I fixed a kayak. Next I just pinned it to a sheet of fiberglass, cut out the outside pattern, then to another area of the fiberglass, cut out the next smaller shape, and so on. You want your smallest pieces on the top so when you sand you sand off the edges rather than into the cloth (this is long proven as best - google Nick Schade) The kayak I fixed had been bent in half while full of water -huge holes. What I found was that once I got going the patches stacked and saturated with epoxy before laying into place, were self supporting and fairly easy. Didn't take much sanding to bring the hull back to fair. (And yeah I think you got it) Good news is that the glass/kevlar hull really wanted to go back to it's design shape, and I just patched kevlar and glass original with just layers of glass - there was no matching issues.
"Vision" = Punchlists. It would be really easy on a project of this scale to just grind yourself down. You just work through a punchlist. As an ADHD guy who used to do construction/renovations everybody finishes a job with a punchlist or eventually they're carried away in a a straitjacket.
re the videos? Just make the videos you want to see, don't ever try to make someone else's video. (As an experienced film buff what I really like about UA-cam is that you can see day by day week after week television being reinvented into something so incredibly better than the overproduced over hyped garbage that bookends commercials.
So you're a bodger (DIYer) with an insanely complicated project of fixing a storm damaged catamaran, that's who you are - so you're making a video about what you're doing. That coach roof patch? 90 percent of people aren't interested, but you're interested and that makes the smarter more curious of us interested. (One time two of my wife's friends came over and did 45 minutes on what time of year to buy Coke and when to buy Pepsi, how the sales work. I have zero interest, but they were so into it it was amazing. This was about 35 years ago. I still remember it.) Good luck.
Don't have any smart tip for you, but I just have to wish you to finish that boat. And, of course, to amuse us with the videos. Great job Bryan and greetings from another software developer and sailor from Croatia.
This project would be a ‘disaster’ for me, but is a ‘dream’ for you. You have the ‘vision’ Bryan and if anyone can do this, it is you. Your videos are just fine, continue to mix them up a little. Keep up the grand work, I wish you well.
Thanks
I love your ambition but boy o boy that looks like a lot of work. Its a credit to you though and Im enjoying your channel / project Keep the vids coming
Just live your dream and we will enjoy watching :-)
What I like to see is the progress that you make in small steps, a wrecked motor that runs for the first time and your (happy) reaction to that. So in an episode a horrible situation/ the brave work you do to fix/clean it, and of course the explanations that you already do, and then the results with the happiness that brings..
And of course at the end...a beautiful boat!
Good Luck!!
OMG Bryan, you renovated "the fisherman's shack" as my wife & I call it. The house on Kaneohe Bay! We looked at that house when it had the stainless steel kitchen counters! Small world.
I prefer rough and ready videos - we all want to see the progress- time lapse is great
I'm no boater
Not yet any way but what I see from other videos is the title gets the clicks. Like" don't look "
"what I did under my catamaran "
"Under cover's "
I like what your doing
Don't watch I'm going to do in my next video 😉
Judt keep it going Bryan . your doing fine . its watching your progress and explaining what youve been doing and seeing the progress. Im amazed at all the people you have subscribed now , great job ! . just keep doing what your doing so i can see it all come together and eventually hit the water and be back sailing . .
Fabulous transformation! love the new hair!
New subscriber and definitely not the last. There are a ton of videos of people doing incredible things on UA-cam but your dream, ambition, and almost inhuman drive on such a cool project place you among the top tier in my opinion. This is such a massive undertaking but the payoff is going to be out of this world. Look forward to following the dream through to the end (and new beginning). Keep it up!
Just do what works for you right now. Your videos are just that, “yours”. What makes them interesting is your unique perspective and presentation. I enjoy the videos and will continue watching to see how your project goes. I’m definitely not going to shut you down if your “editing” is lacking (Which I don’t think is the case).
I appreciate that!
I love to see the time lapse work, with you giving a commentary over it.
Good to know!
I agree with you.
You got to see what it's gona be like. Not what its like now
Don't know how much time you spent on this video but I actually liked it. Your comments on evaluating progress made what maybe look random to some actually shows there is a method to the madness. Keep it going. Good luck!
Thanks. It takes me about 8hrs to edit a video of about 12 min with voiceovers and cutting all the dead space out of the time-lapse. But just like working on the boat and responding to comments it's very enjoyable for me. It's just about finding the time.
Wow, that's some serious pressure washing inside the boat! :)
Yes it was!
Keep going, it’s fine perfect the boat and play with the videos....it’s not about us. I am learning about fiberglass and like your lessons. In hopes one day I can own a yacht.👍
I admire you for taking such a huge project... I had many boats, worked on everything and anything on them...
My favorite videos are when you don't repeat yourself to much, maybe avoid to many details on "how to" and "why to"
Go slow motion on some important stages, and speedy motion on others... and yes, I probably don't make much sense to lot of your viewers, but some will understand...
No matter what you do, keep on doing those videos, they are instructive, and will probably motivate a new generation of sailors!
Thank you for doing this, I know how much work you are putting into it, editing, planning and building! Thank you!
Great tips
I love the " how to" stuff. You are doing great with the production. The technics of fiber glassing is interesting and educational. I look forward to each episode. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thanks so much!
I'm really enjoying your video's because you are being truthful. You're not pretending your an expert and you don't hide away any mistakes. I can really relate to how you're working because I've gone through similar things myself when restoring a couple of boats. But also at the moment, here in Australia, I'm absolutely knackered after three years of building a property. It's 99% finished. The market is good at the moment but may change soon so I'm having to dig really deeply to get that last bit of energy and drive out of myself to finish the last few bits of the build, when all my body wants to do is have a day (or three) off. Seeing the mess inside your boat and then watching how you just carry on regardless makes me think "OK, just 'see' the vision- the finished product and just focus on that just as you do. So thanks. You are having a very positive effect on more than just boat fans.
By the way, every time I see you sanding fibreglass, I remember back to when I had to do the same thing years ago and then itched like crazy as it got into my skin. A great tip that really worked for me (and will for your viewers) is after you've had a COOL shower (NOT warm or hot) dry yourself and then cover the effected area of your body with cheap masking tape. Keep it on for maybe 20 minutes or so and then RIP it off. The glass shards will come off with it!
Well done Bryan, again one step closer to your sail-around-the-globe dream! (and for your viewers a lot of fun watching yr videos in the meantime. Thx!)
Love watching the progress. Do you ever get overwhelmed with the scale and scope of a project like this? Or is your optimism and confidence endless? Love watching. Thanks for bringing us along.
Yes, I get discouraged sometimes. The reason it doesn't effect me too much is that I actually enjoy working on the boat. If I was just attempting to get it done as fast as possible so I could go sailing, it would be very frustrating.
so hardworking and smart, great to watch
Bryan, you are doing great, it's a journey and we are all along for the ride. The way you explain things is great, allows others to learn. Only thing I would add, I have done a few refits, but best thing is to build a basic structure around the boat then use shrink wrap to make it water tight. Then you do not have to worry about the weather so much, rain kills productivity. As you know, some of the glass layups can take a while, and making a semi permeant tent around the boat allows you to keep moving forward.
great advice
However much it will eventually cost to get that boat bluewater usable, you should probably have invested that amount into a usable fixer upper and started from there. One doesn't always have to start at the bottom.
I would say, don’t change your basic approach to your videos. Huge project but very enjoyable to see your progress.
Thanks, will do!
Just keep doing what you do - we love it
Fantastic content, love your approach to this project, and your haircut looks great.
I am hoping to see the finished boat some day and I think it will look great but we got some way to go for that to materialize. I'm not looking for perfect videos, I just like to see what you are doing to the boat and hopefully learn something. My next project is a 78 corvette rebuild and finish the basement in my house.
Really great project and video! The way you explain the individual tasks and zip through is captivating. I’m going to go back and watch any and all previous vids on this as well as subscribe. 👍
I like your videos ! I know you can do it ! I dream of sailing away one day too!!
Have you watched parlay revival UA-cam videos. He bought a hurricane damaged cat and is having to work on bulkheads now
Great work so far . Just keep it real. Best of luck achieving your dream👍👏👏
These kind of videos are great. timelapses of your projects are nice to watch. satisfying to see the progress
Thank you very much! There is a ton more work to do and a tone more videos on the way
Progress is good maybe spend a couple vids getting the inner cleaning done
I think I am about to agree with most people, but... I don't think the "quality" of your editing will make much difference. Personally, I like the way you explain things - I don't even know why I find it interesting, I am not about to buy a sail boat and re-build it, so what use is it to me? None!! But it is really interesting, and the size of your project amazes me!! I follow a few sailing channels, and for me when they stop fixing and start sailing, I lose interest :-) Keep em coming please!!
Good advice. I don't think I will ever stop fixing ⛵🌎🛠
Nicely done keep up the great work. I love your videos they’re honest and open I especially like your fiberglass and videos makes me understand how the process works a little bit better as I have never done any fiberglass in whatsoever take care be safe
Thanks, will do!
I was sceptical when you first bought this boat, it was in such a wreck that I didn't think you would be able to do it.
...but I'm starting to see it now.
Im a software engineer looking to do the same, I think ill buy a not smashed up mono though ;)
Great videos just love them ! Love watching the different components of the rebuild
Very very cool leaving comments for UA-cam algorithms
Hey Cool...you are doing great, I like your mindset.
I really like your videos, keep going!
