I would like to add that I personally feel your burst is most effectively used to stop a character who has reached their win condition. It's a concept LK spoke about that genuinely helped evolve how I use burst. I don't agree that you should risk waiting to burst after Millia does H-disk as you are giving her too much time in her win condition. Same with a Pot player hitting you with 2k 2d. I feel that it's actually mad important to keep tempo in a match without giving your opponent a chance to pull too far ahead of you. Another situation to think about is characters whose win condition is having meter, which means it might be a good idea to burst to prevent them from getting positive bonus etc etc.
There are definitely moments where it's not worth the risk but usually you can hold a buster or a few hits from millia and you should be generally trying to use your burst in a really important spot.
Offensive bursts and early bursts definitely have their place but that's a bit complicated for sure
I feel like I'm close to getting in, but I definitely need to work on some of the stuff in this vid. I am guilty of the RC resets because a "good" player told me to do them a while back and it's become habit. I also generally burst way too early.
A few extra tips I'd like to add that have been helping me a lot recently have been:
1. Ask people for advice. Anytime you lose in tower ask for advice or to play on discord. Most people are really nice and more than happy to help and you might even make some cool friends that love the game as much as you do.
2. Look at your RatingUpdate profile and look at your worst matchups (it's at the bottom of the page.) If there's a really common character in there that you struggle with, work on that character specifically since it will help you win more games on average and practice is more available.
3. Learn RPS. I can't believe how long this concept took me to understand, but I used to just 214K as Gio and then block and give them their turn back. Learn what moves are good to RPS (usually anything between -1 to -4) and find 50/50s. Backdash, 2K, 6P, etc. Yes sometimes you're gonna guess wrong, but that's better than giving up your pressure every time, and usually your reward is gonna be better than what they get.
4. Learn to pressure on FD. Maybe this is just a Gio thing, but FD can destroy your pressure, and it took me way too long to learn how to deal with it. Most characters can use 5K pressure to mitigate it's effects and keep up the heat.
5. Sort your frametraps by gap size and if someone isn't pressing, use a wider string. As Gio I have strings with 1f, 2f, 3f, 6f, and 8f gaps. I'll start safe and slowly use worse strings to see where their risk reward tends to lie. This lets you read into their habits, because eventually they have to jump or press and then you can tighten them back up to scare them again. And if they never press even on grand canyon sized gaps then you'll know your throw pressure is gonna be way more consistent.
6. Don't use YRC unless you'll die. It's costly, has meter penalty, doesn't guarantee an escape, and can even be baited. Anytime you YRC there was probably another option you could have used and now you're playing without meter for like 7+ seconds. If your opponent is doing it to you, don't fret either. They're blowing meter, so stay patient and try not to let them escape, then beat em up for using it.
7. Learn fuzzies, especially fuzzy block and jump. Those two are low risk options that will pay off consistently. If the opponent is using a string without fixed fuzzy timing, you can still mix in random high blocks and jumps based on the matchup. These will make you unpredictable and they'll either have to focus on safer strings or literally won't adapt. You win either way.
8. Rotate options to overload their mental stack. Don't play layer 1 only until it doesn't work. Mix it up like crazy. Pretty much everyone has low/high/throw mix to some degree, as well as frame traps. Your goal is to threaten everything. If they're having to guess you're already winning.
9. Learn the neutral triangle. This applies more at high level play, but at least understand how protect your space and to recognize when you CAN rush in. Strive has less footsies than say SF, but it's still there.
10. Have fun lol. Play when you want and if you're not having fun do something else. Getting to play a game like this is a privilege that not everyone has, so be grateful and enjoy your time. Plus a positive mentality will help you improve faster since you're less worried about results and open to trying new things.
Great video overall!
V good tips!
thank you for the video! the tip about multi-layered offense And thinking differently about your offense in terms of layers is something I've struggled to conceptualize in my head. so I'm definitely going to think about that and how to further build upon my gameplan
Thanks for making this video most of the things you mentioned on what i should be working on is what I need to do more for example everytime i do something unsafe with sol i don't RC to make it safe but you mentioning that made me realize i need to use my meter for those type of situations and i need to use my meter more in general again thanks for making this video and sorry for making you read this long comment thank you.
I'm glad it helped :D
The "git gud" i needed to hear thank you👍

So for the whole cheating thing, I get what you mean about better practice, but I still think you should try to get in by yourself, even if it’s only once. The reward you get for doing it yourself is so much better then cheating. Now I do cheat almost every Celestial challenge nowadays because I’ve gotten in by myself 4 times so at this point getting into Celestial is more of a bother but I still feel that you’ll regret it if you don’t do it at least once by yourself. While it takes a long time to get celestial it can take even longer to start winning. I would know this as I fluked getting into celestial by 3-0ing a sin (sin had just came out) and a pot witch was my most played MU at the time, so I was only at about 1360 ish elo, and I would not start winning in celestial for two months after I got in for the first time. This type of thing can be demoralizing and not many have the strength to go 0-30 for the day, and it’s not like you can go back to floor ten cus they will dodge the hell out of you; that’s actually my main issue with getting into celestial these days cus people always doge the level 1100 May lol, don’t get me wrong I don’t blame them even I do it from time to time when I meet a name I recognize those high level gameplay videos. What I’m getting at is that there is a big sense of accomplishment that comes with getting celestial for the first time by yourself and that feeling can be ruined if it’s not your first time seeing the challenge completed splash screen.
this channel is so underrated! Good video and cant wait for more videos like this.
I wish strive had a better ranked system. I think sfv had the best matchmaking/ranked system out of any fighting game. It’s simple and works well. I know the Lp grind is kind of insane for some of the higher ranks which is a fault for sure. Ggst has one of the worst ranked systems I’ve ever engaged with in my life….
Great vid symbolist, was sick meeting you at CB. Excited to see what you make for SF6 :)
Thanks! Hope I get to see you at more majors ^^
Honestly great content! Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to keep it in mind next time I get my challenge. Hope you keep making Strive content!
I got celestial for the first time a few days ago playing against an asuka, granted it was still tough but asuka is still new so I guess it was bit of 'cheating'. But what came after, actually playing against good players, getting absolutely beat down and grinding it out feels like it really improved my game. Doubt Ill make it again for a while but atleast I got some info. Thanks for the vid!
It was the same for me but with sin lol. Keep going, not many people have the fortitude to lose but I can tell you that playing in celestial-even if your losing-will help you improve at a much more rapid rate, or at least it did for me. Keep on the grind my fellow tower enjoyer!
This man talking about why YOU deserve to be gatekept and he's playing SOL. Social Credit Deducted.
😔
Sol is fine rn lol
people really still think sol is busted
1thing I want to add on the point of abusing the system to get into celestial, I personally feel like picking your battles is a great way to still feel like it was "earned" before I got in the first time, I was going even with low celestial players in beginner brackets, so I knew it was possible and I was decent enough to want to practice there. So I chose for my challenge to only fight low celestials, took a good number of attempts but after a while I got the run. Now that I've done it once semi legit, idc get a friend to cheese me in.
Great advice!! Really helpful for that intermediate level.
I have one layer, chipp rekka 🙂
The strongest layer of cheese in the lasagna :P
This video made me realize that I don't really have much of a gameplan beyond press 2s if they are running, whiff punishing, ch 5h when I see fireball and 6p when I see iad. All of my aha moments came from realizing how to deal with a specific character's neutral rather than utilizing my own tools, which is probably why fighting games feel so inconsistent and tiring to play for me. That said I don't really know what I can do for a gameplan, I am too scared of doing anything until I condition my opponent to start whiff punishing me.
I am so far off from being in celestial, some players I would go against there are on a whole other level and are untouchable to me; I don't want to cheat my way into celestial until I can consistently wash people in floor 10. That said, I've been feeling the burnout for the last few weeks- I am nowhere close to accomplishing this.
There's always someone better, even those celestial players have their demons. Fgs are a journey for yourself, and everyone improves at their own pace. Try experimenting with your gameplan and don't be afraid to lose!
It's so true to me what you said about getting to celestial through "cheats" and practice there (Pot main)
My way of cheating was cherrypicking. I got my first celestial challenge almost a year ago. 2 weeks of failing it to much stronger opponents made me swallow my pride and pick ppl closer to my skill. I wouldn't accept anyone 200 lvls higher than me. When I got to celestial at the beginning of the august prev year I decided that I will grind the hell out of this month
Next month as well as this entire year I never needed to cherrypick again. One month in celestial made me good enough to win against random celestials initially and later fight quite competent ppl without the fight feeling one sided
Recently hit top 100 as Potemkin. If you ever see a guy named Invarkul in your EU celestial lobby, give me hell, brotha
good video, I like the kara super compilation in the background
I play other fighting games, yet alot of these points applied to me regardless. Great video!
Check mate cant be gatekept if you just go to the top floor.
I'm sure this is a really good video but I didn't hear anything because of the shirtless Sol mod.
When strive released there was a certain lull in my commitment to friends, so I had a lot of time to spend by myself in training mode and get semi comfortable with release state Laust, but over time my commitment to my friends kept dragging me over into spending time either in first person shooters like apex or sim racing, or even grindy coop games, so when in s2 they finally released Faust, I basically only learned to autopilot 6H into thrust, and otherwise didn't find the time to go back and even maintain what I had already learned, let alone learning new things. I guess my ADHD is making it harder than it should to dedicate myself to the fgc as much as it should, but while I hope that with sf6 I may find the will to push through, I can't seem to find the right balance between hanging out with my friends and my drive to getting good.
Friendship is more important man. Your relationships will prove to be more valuable the older you get.
@@newgroundtv I guess. I know that. Thinking about it, this doesn't connect much to the video at all does it? I'm extremely grateful for the group of friends I'm in, but it's only human nature to always wonder "what if", right?
@@bartekkko for sure, I usually just grind in tower once my friends start playing games I don’t particularly like. They complain at me for not joining sometimes but eh, I enjoy fighting games more than smite and Apex.
Try to get friends to play with you if at all possible. Almost 2 years late one of my friends is finally picking up Strive on games pass and even though I kicked the absolute shit out of him when we played for the first time last night he's excited to keep playing and hanging out with the other friend group I gathered while playing strive
@@richardjohnson8991 I actually do, managed to get one of my friends into FGs enough to the point where we play at least weekly, and a lost bet resulted in me buying him a copy of SF6 so that will be fun, but one particular interaction has to be highlighted, where I went 25-0 against him, and he uninstalled strive for a month, so I'm kind of wary of getting better
There are also top players in the park as well
True! Sometimes hard to find though. Usually people are playing brackets if they're in the park
Movin' to sf6 eh? Who's your main gonna be?
Yup yup... the character with the most sauce seems to be JP at the moment so we'll try him out and then keep an eye on Marisa and Ken
@@SymbolistFGC Interesting choices. I've been a Cammy/Dan/Dudley main since the 90s, but I also do zui quan IRL so I'm gonna go for Jamie / Cammy this time round and *hope* that Dudley gets added in the future.
@@KnjazNazrath dudly would be sick, I'm looking forward to seeing what aki and Akuma are like too. Maybe Rashid? There's a ton of cool characters :D
Share that Sol thumbnail please!
If i had a nickel for ever time i got so close to being an celestial player from my my 6wins i think i always lose on the last 2 stars and go back to 10 to do it all agian
Gatekeeping is is never okay just let new people enjoy new things
Gatekeeping is always ok, or else you end up with communities that aren’t interested in the subject matter at all. If you want to enjoy something, you should be willing to commit to try to get past the basic gates, as this video is about, rather than demand you’re let in.
what is the name of that mod?
Great video! where you get those sol mods from?
I had them commissioned! If you shoot me a message on Twitter I'll link you to the post ^^
@@SymbolistFGC my man really commissioned a shirtless sol mod...based
@@bharadwajkk6823so based
Regarding the first tip, do you have any tips for me getting a layered game plan with goldLewis?
I'm not a goldlewis main but it creating a varied gameplan between high and low behemoth typhoon, and also weaving in throws when you notice your opponent is too scared to make a move is good. If people are jumping a lot something like c.s -> delay 2k 2d will catch them out as well. ^^ its all about trying to rotate your options to beat what your opponent is trying to do ^^
Using drone to take space and trying to react to what option they do to get away from/past it in neutral is very strong as well as making your approach vary between f.s and j.d at close range can be difficult to react to.
This is a good video!
I do have some of the problems mentioned in this video and I do need to work on them, but it's easier said than done. Unfortunately, I ended up dropping the game entirely and chose to dedicate myself to Street Fighter 6. Guilty Gear is just too crazy and hectic for me. Some of the main issues I'm seeing in Strive now is that a lot of high level players (lvl 1000+) is gatekeeping Floor 10 now. At first, I thought it was because they got demoted after the beginning of a new month...but they are not going away. Now I'm thinking they just want an easy win.
10.5 player here. For me, i dont want to game the system to get into celestial. I just want to play well and earn it myself. Thats just me tho
Same, the problem with this is you basically have to. Otherwise if you just queue up in practice mode and just take what the game gives you, you'll 0-3 against these blue aura level 2000s who are on floor 10 for god knows what reason. And it's not rewarding beating up someone who is floor 6 who is up there because no one else is playing the game.
Game just needs a proper ranked mode :(
You SHOULD game the system here. Im a celestial chipp and I absolutely think you should “cheat “ your challenge for 2 reasons.
1. The sooner you get into celestial the sooner you can play against definitively better players where you can learn more!
2. The system sucks and it deserves to be taken advantage of
no no no no no no, dude what the hell, that last point was not it man. yeah you could say celestial challenge is really hard but thats what makes it worth it, people who cheat are awful
Nah. I disagree. I think you should get to celestial by any means necessary because not being in celestial prolly means you're just sitting there stagnating and grinding your head against the wall. Celestial means nothing. It's just a place to be for (not even high level) games.
Trying to fight level 3000 players as a level 45 floor 10 player and constantly failing is dumb, not honorable.
@@SymbolistFGC it obviously means something if you're saying people need to get better before entering
@@SymbolistFGC celestial may mean nothing to you, but after working hard playing a low tier and not cheesing or refusing rematches to get in I'm proud of myself
@How to Change The World I'm glad you feel that way about it and you improved enough to meet your goals
I don't play the game and i feel like should be insulted
I'm gonna be honest, when I play someone who's in their celestial challenge, I play better
or just play baiken or goldlewis :P)
Got recommended this and it may well be because i have been listening to fate extra soundtrack, i have absolutely no interest in fighting games lmao
Now time like the present to get involved! They're fun :D
Fates godlike though
bro turn your mic up
It's called git gud scrubs
