    Apologies about some flickering lighting (before the comments flood in about it!) - the different stands and varying LED frequencies at the boat show played havoc with the camera’s refresh rate. We tried to correct, hence the delay in putting this video out, but still hope you value the content over any imperfections! Toby

      Its not about the refresh rate. Its about camera shutter speed and refresh rate of the lighting. In most of Europe the refresh rate is 50hz, so to avoid the flickering you should use 1/50 shutter speed, alternatively 1/100 or 1/150 etc. Avoid using the cameras auto-mode when filming inside, because that will make the camera change the aperture and shutter speed continuously to expose correctly.

      @@GLNG Hmmmm. I never looked into this, but maybe you are correct. it seems like you would want a different frame speed, but maybe you do want to synchronize them... same shutter speed is highly unlikely to actually synchronize them though.

    The designer is a cool dude! I LOVE that guy! He's fascinated and intrigued by his OWN design. That's passion, folks! That's what happens when a guy who's "smarter" than you, shows up on his own playground, remembering what it was like to be a kid, KNOWING how to build the swing-set! What a GREAT video!

    Wow Toby, thanks. I can’t wait for your part 2 video of that boat when you take it for a sail. I want to see if you can go upwind 40 degrees off the wind and get to 11-12 knots. That would be incredible. Not a lot of creature comforts, but what an innovative boat. More, please.

    It will be fun to see this under sail. They aren't going to sell a lot of these, they appeal to a very specific audience. But I get it. Strip out what you don't need, make it just comfortable enough to be tolerable for shorter cruises, and let it rip. It is for people who care a lot less about creature comforts and how much stuff they can bring with them, and a lot more about how much fun they can have sailing fast. I mean, of course the helm is totally exposed to the weather, because that is the way real men sail!

    This is my favorite 40ft sailboat. I’d love to sail one someday. I’ve been on an older 900 and it was amazing. I could only imagine how this thing feels at the helm.

    Love the review. Great guy & great boat. I'm already sorting out my version. I agree with many that the boom looks dangerously low and wish that it was higher and integrated into an arch / traveler. It would allow for the dodger/canvas connections fore / aft for cockpit & helm protection. I'd love to add the Integrel "alternator" and some Lithium batteries, keep the induction and add AC. Even though they aren't the best, some flexible solar panels on the amas could help. On top of the price, this does put this version at a distinct disadvantgae.

    Great vid thanks Toby and team. I still think about that Pogo 30, but increasingly I like the idea of a multi hull for coastal cruising etc. This one looks great. That argument about monohull knock-down recovery vs multihull outrunning weather... it's gone from a whacky idea to more serious for me. Maybe it can't happen for expedition craft, but damn. Getting places at double or triple the speed...

    I really like this boat. I live on the Florida west coast. If I was going to limit my sailing to VACATIONS around the Gulf, Belize, Cancun, Bahamas and Windward Islands, I would definitely want to own this boat. It's fast, it's fun, it's pretty, (including the interior! unlike too many modern production boats, at any price, who provide cheap, contractor grade looking cabinetry) and it would make a great getaway boat. In spite of what was said, I do not see this as a long term, ocean going cruiser unless you are into camping and standing outside in the rain. But for fun, heck yes!

      Yes I agree. Dragonfly trimarans have always managed to appeal to both mono and multi enthusiasts, where the former can still apprecaiate that direct feedback from the rudder - yet love that they can cruise or race at thrilling speed. If ever there was a boat to convert die hard monohull fans, this could be it! T

    I looked long and hard at Dragonfly before buying the last of Hinckley’s Sou’Wester 59’s. I love the space, comfort and performance of my world class cruising tank, but I might have picked this performance cruiser instead had the 40 been off the drawing board. It’s cramped compared to my boat, but comfortable enough and the speed/fun factor would make up the difference. Would I trade? Certainly not. But this is probably the coolest cruising tri on the market right now, IMHO.

    Cruise under motor at 9 knots is amazing. Sailing speed should be excellent. Their smaller boats are great. The 40 should be great too, in a different but related way.

      Dragonflys are built in Denmark. Labor there is more costly than China, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Africa, etc.

    love this concept and its performance especially enabling bluewater cruising. The only cons I found in the space and price. For an equipped boat it cost easily 700tsd euro if you intend to cross the ocean. If I could afford it, I would buy one.

    Not sure about moving mass out to the ends. There’s a drastic increase in moment of inertia in the longitudinal plane compared to the same mass amidships.
    This slows down the response in that plane, potentially making for a wet ride if she’s slow to rise to the seas. I’d want a test sail to windward in a short chop before I’d buy her.

      You are talking out of your ass m8. This yard has been building boat's since the 60's and sold more than 200 of the smaller 28 feet. They also build the 920 racing. (Did not Google how many sold)
      They got 2 boat's, they hire out. So you can try to see if you can handle it lol
      This was just to show that they know what they are doing, when it comes to building fast sailing trimarans.

      I was a bit shocked to see jens suggesting that you should use the floats for storage, a generator, etc. I have sailed and raced on lots of tris, owned three of them and generally a bad idea to load mass that far outboard. Dragonflies never come close to Corsairs in performance, but they have always been very well built and designed.

      I’ve been sailing all my life mate. Keeping mass out of the ends of the boat is one of the basics. I’ve also sailed the odd pig, designed by more famous designers than this guy. Not saying you cannot possibly design a boat to carry weight in the ends, but I’d still want a sail to windward in a short lop before I’d go and buy one. Neither am I claiming any universal knowledge. Even the best designers get it wrong sometimes. As with anything to do with boat design there are compromises to be made. He may have got it right, but with a lifetime of sailing from 10’ dinghies up to a 120’ square rigger I do have a few clues.

    About the 1800kg payload.
    Can somebody explain me if this is a lot or not and how it compare to an equivalent size monohull. And also doesn’t it include fuel and water tanks?

      I checked, it's about 1800 assuming you have the boat "wet" (full of all liquids) and that excludes crew. But it does include all optional retrofit equipment, gensets, etc. But generally speaking you can put a LOT more into a monohull. These things are fast but supposed to be light.

    Boom needs to be a lot higher and put a traveler on an arch. This would then give the ability to have weather protection for the helm and passenger area. No protection from the weather while standing watch would be a no go for me.

    How and where would you haul out this boat? If something happens to a monohull or reasonably big catamaran, you will always find boatyard near. But if you have emergency in a trimaran......

      Just dry out on any beach?! The outer hulls swing in to reduce beam and it has true shoal draught so can access a lot more waters than most monohulls

      The question still remains. Can it be lifted by a travel hoist if it needs yard work? So many places that’s the only way they can get a vessel out. If it can’t take the strops around its folded amas, you’re stuck. So can it?

      @@yachtingworld that may work for cleaning the hull and small repairs. What if you hit something and damage the very bottom of the hull? Or need to change zinc on the propellers? Or the constant antifoul renewing. You would have to plan that in advance, because not every boatyard can accommodate such beamy boat. ( ps: I'm not hating on multihulls. I'm a big fan of them. It's just that sometimes they bring some unexpected challenges ☺)
      Also: 'any beach' works maybe for Bahamas. Try finding a safe sandy beach on volcanic islands.......

    As the owner of a Weta 4.4 I've fallen in love with trimarans. For the owner that wants to go F***ING fast, this boat would be a great choice. I'd love one though it's hard to compete in the cruising market with a 40' catamaran that has 10x the liveable space. It's really a matter of priority.

      The lack of living space compared to the catamarans are also my concern. Yes, the trimaran is faster, but just how much?! Across the Atlantic a 40 foot trimaran is 14 hours faster than a Lagoon 45, and the Lagoon is 29 tonnes! Choosing a liveaboard in this price range, I would never choose a trimaran just to be able to sail across the Atlantic 14 hours faster! Just saying...

      @@jesper1406 there is a reason Lagoon reviews start with how fast they go under engine... a Lagoon 45 upwind you'll be lucky to do 7 knots at 50 true. Downwind is a breeze it is barely more than half the speed of the DF40. If you want a caravan, buy one. If you want to sail then...

      The idea is you can sit at the edge of the boat with maximum visibility and proper weight distribution whilst still being able to reach the wheel easily. If you were to do that with a single wheel it would take up the whole width of the cockpit, and be very difficult to get around.

      No, the central hull is much, much narrower, especially compared to modern monohulls. So it probably has interior volume comparable to a 30ft monohull.

      Except a lot faster. A Monohull this size would get you to what 12 knots for a pretty good one, whereas this goes twice that speed! It is very useful and interesting in that respect.

      No. The Dragonflies 25 and 28 are trailerable, not the 32 or the 40.

      Indeed. And the boom is too low to put anything above. I also didn't like the low standing height inside. Would not buy.

      It looks like there’s room for a bimini at the helm station. Worst case scenario, and considering the price, I’m sure the builder could deliver one with the boom set higher.

      I think this would need substantial modification to be made into an ocean cruiser. It needs better hatches, a protected cockpit, sail storage in the main hull (don't want to have to go onto the ama if you need the storm sail)...

      @@DanielWilliams-oi4ss I guess you could forego the forward cabin but without that I don't think there's any room for sails in the main hull. If you have strong stanchions and lifelines then going out to the ama's shouldn't be that big of a deal considering there are tramps between the hulls and your ride is a lot flatter than a monohull.

    They should use electric propulsion and use the engine as gensets to charge batteries and run propulsion.
    And Regen prop.
    Would allow heat pump.

      @@TedKidd Electricity is HORRIBLY INEFFICIENT for boats. Every moron that invests in electric engine tech is just another know it all green warrior who has no idea of the real needs for propulsion. A boat is in constant peril, even at the dock. If you need to get out of trouble, or lose your rig, or the hundreds of scenarios you can't imagine, an electric engine might last 1-3 hours, while diesel might take you 10-20 days to exhaust your stores.

    So I'm researching about specifically trimarans to live on. I'm looking for something spacious where 4 people can live months on end without any major drawbacks. I really started to like trimarans because of the nets between the hulls but I'm open for any other boat that might be of consideration. Feel free to throw some comments and narrow down my research to better pinpoint what I have to be looking for. Thank you

      Sounds like a good catamaran would be better. More space, more room, and lovely trampolines. Not as fast as a trimaran but faster than a monohull.

    We saw 22kts on our McGregor catamaran. Yeah but in open ocean, more like 9kts were as fast as we could go to avoid burying a bow. There were wind conditions and sea state that would allow more but sailing from Majuro (RMI) to Kwalein with a whole slug of squalls we did not average anything close to 12kts.

    Have you ever seen a sports tanker or a family bulldozer? Comfort and speed are two poles between which you must choose. There is nothing under sailis fast and comfortable at the same time.

    So its an expensive 40ft monohull with a couple of outriggers on it?
    One of the bigger advantages of multihulls I thought was the increased space. This doesn't achieve that. Presumably it will not heel and be more stable on the hook, but it really doesn't seem to fix any monohull negative that a cat doesn't, and has far less space.
    Or am I missing something?

      Look at the specifications sheet at the end of the video, beam is reduced by more than half in 40-50 seconds takes hulls to swing in beside main hull, so the boat fits into a monohull's docking slip thereby increasing convenience by not having to use a mooring and dinghy-in or else pay catamaran slip fees.

      It is probably double the speed of a mono at equivalent wind conditions, and can carry sail in wind speeds that you would have a storm sail on a mono. Insane righting moment means this can scream. As compared to cats, this will carry more sail than a cat of similar length, and can fit into a monohull slip, if need be.
      But you're right about space. This thing is a rich man's weekend toy, or possibly an ocean crosser for someone who is ok with doing a pretty spartan refit.

    Another lovely trimaran from Dragonfly but having sailed more than halfway around the world on our formula 40 trimaran I'm not sure I'd take something across oceans that's designed to fold. Also with the engine compartment and access so far aft and the transom so low the accessing it and opening it would be dangerous in large following seas or when the preverbal "shit hits the fan". I can see a very rusty and sorry looking engine and machinery compartment a few years after purchase.

      I agree Jason, folding for ocean crossings isn't the best idea, even the Rapido 60 "Romanza" had the beams fixed permanently after their Tasman crossing, it creaked and flexed too much. I wouldn't swap our fixed beam Edlin 10.6 for a folder. The transom isn't that low, pause the vid at 1.16, may still get some water over it, but its not at sea level for sure.
      I'd be concerned about the weight distribution too, heavy stuff at the bow and stern seems to go against common trimaran design thoughts hey.
      Beautiful boat though...

      Agreed, this is way too much imo, but I guess it attracts a certain clientel that are ready to spend that kind of cash. If we compare it to a monohull, bar speed ofc, the HR40C is around €550k ready to sail, which in my world is much more value. But like I said, to each his own.

    Gotta say, I kinda don't like this one. The cockpit has ZERO protection, so it's going either be miserable to sail, or they'll suggest putting an ugly plastic dodger on it. Should've just put a roof over the whole thing. You'd have weather protection and a better place for the boom lines, as well as maybe some space for solar panels. Quite a few missed opportunities here. Probably better to go with a Neel 43. Better comfort at sail and more practical, although maybe not as fast as the Dragonfly.

    Having sailed up & down the QLD AUS Coast in a 48" mono with a 250 L water capacity I found we were having to pull in to marinas to offen for water replenishment . I'd like to see more H2O capacity .fuel I'd give it just a pass .

      They make quite plain basics that you spec-up depending on need. Certainly plenty of room and weight for kit, but everyone's use is slightly different.

      The hull seems very efficient though, so range for the same motor and fuel quantity may be much more than a monohull. It's lighter per length than a mono or catamaran too, so there's less mass to move and less water to displace. Overall very efficient which means greater fuel economy too.

      Do you really want to be under power for 30 or more hours? At 2000 RPM it burns 4 lph under load. That is over 30 + hours at 5 to 6 knots or better! What is the longest you've motored without stopping?

      @@Alex-cw3rz For coastal cruising, it's far more than enough motor range. For ocean crossings, sometimes there are periods of little or no wind and motoring is necessary.
      That said, with modern weather forecasting, it should be possible to avoid unfavorable weather better than before. Also boats like these move so efficiently even in light winds that motor is needed much less often than a monohull or catamaran.
      The latter is the point many people seem to be missing, probably due to lack of experience with them.

    Monomaran - very pretty and nice appointments, but you can do 24 kts on a 1987 f27 for 30k.

I made an on point comment that bragsplaining a feature of a boat that costs multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars when that feature was delivered decades ago (and yes loanwood - corsairs are still manufactured today) is not that impressive. Referencing a dingy is a shiny object that does not change the fact that the original statement is not that impressive.
