They tossed out Hartman's version because he got murdered? Like whoops sorry guys this treasured actor had the audacity to be murdered the bastard so lets bin it and reshoot the whole thing years later. I can't imagine his family was against them reairing it.

It was an ABC airing, so they probably felt that Tom Bergeron would be more relevant to their viewers than a guy who'd been dead for over a decade.

There were several edits at the opening credits that varied over the years.
    - In the 1988 VHS release, after the Cat in the Hat Presentation logo, the music just fades in randomly during the epic fanfare while the How the Grinch Stole Christmas! title card shows up (probably becuz it was from the original 1966 print), and the How the Grinch Stole Christmas! title card with the snowflakes is cut, so after the opening credits, the start of the program just fades in.
    - In the 1994 and 1996 VHS releases, the Cat in the Hat Presentation logo just has the bells, then the title card begins with the trumpet fanfare. The title card with snowflakes was finally included in the release!
    - In the 1998 MGM and 2000 Warner DVD releases, as well as the 1999 and 2000 Warner VHS releases, the Cat in the Hat Presentation logo does not have the bells and instead started the actual fanfare for the special.
    - From the 2006 DVD release onwards, the Cat in the Hat Presentation logo finally got the bells back, which basically is extended (with the original sponsor tag music) with a fade out. Then, the title card fades in and starts the epic fanfare associated the special, which makes the title card last much longer.
Also, in releases prior to the 1998 MGM DVD release (I believe), the edit is a little different at the end, as the transition between the The End part and the end credits settled quick, and the music for the end credits usually started quick. The 1998 MGM DVD release (I believe) onward just let the instrumental of the The End section end while it would transition into the title card, then the beginning of the end credits music would start to slowly fade in.
And one last thing, prior to the 1998 MGM DVD release, the MGM Television (with Leo the Lion) started the Tanner roar earlier and the music did not fade out slightly earlier like in later releases, making it much louder and the very end of the soundtrack heard better than in later releases.

Thank you for all this information! It's so interesting learning about the edits and changes throughout the different releases of the film. Also, thanks for your upload of the original sponsorship opening on your UA-cam channel :)

A few things to point out.
1:18 I'm pretty sure the choir got removed by the 1998 MGM DVD release, and it was kept that way onward since the 2000 Warner DVD release used the same master.
When you were talking about the "You're a vile one" and "You're a rotter" segments being cut out from possibly the '70s until 1985, it was due to the fact that the lines were inappropriate for TV at the time. The Grinch doing an evil grin at the Who children sleeping with their candy canes was cut because it was considered too creepy. It was later brought back by the mid '80s (around 1985).
1:54 Actually, it wasn't just the 2000 Warner "Special Edition" DVD release, it was also the 1998 MGM DVD release and the 1999 and 2000 Warner VHS releases (if the VHS releases ever had the color errors) as well. Oh, and it wasn't just the Grinch that had a color issue. A lot of the green were also discolored yellow as well, including the green walls in Cindy Lou Who's house (e.g. ua-cam.com/video/P_GwSN_tNN0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared (starts at 0:53)) And the scene in which the Whos formed a circle, singing "Welcome Christmas" and forming a star where the Christmas tree was... The coloring got even worse. The scene got more hot pink by the part in which shows the bells, looking like it was from a damaged Eastmann color film strip from the '60s and '70s.
