This particular video was made because I personally feel that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is quite undervalued today. Something I consider unfortunate. Hopefully gushing about the positives of the film can convince you otherwise!

I have always loved this movie, and hated how people called Snow White a maiden in distress, when she is a hard worker that wishes for her dream to come true, but never expects it without a price. She cleaned up the dwarfs cottage because she knew she couldn't just stay for free. She is a symbol of a hard working person in the great depression. And ofc she's gonna be helpless sometimes. 14 or not she is still young, and you can tell. Plus she handled herself quite well for being young, and hiding from a mad woman trying to kill her. BTW I just love this movie. My favorite scene is definitely the spooky forest scene. It captures her anxiety, and fear so well.

snow white is so incredibly important to me, vying for the top spot as my favorite princess next to cinderella and jasmine. she holds a different kind of strength than someone like merida or moana, and the values of hard work, kindness, and optimism will never go out of style. i wonder if you've seen there will be fudd's video titled "why snow white is (still) the strongest disney princess"? he hits on a lot of the same points you do, and it's so nice to see others appreciate both the artistry and work put into the movie, and don't discredit it. there's a reason that it's the benchmark for 2d animation, and in storytelling. there's nothing wrong with a simple story when it nails the emotional story beats the way snow white does!

This movie came out during or not long after the Great Depression. Disney wanted to show a protagonist that still smiled and remained optimistic and hard working despite the fact that she had just lost everything and was in the lowest point of her life. The scene in the forest after her panic attack really shows her strength. This character was intentioned to be that one voice of optimism shown to an audience living in the most difficult time in history. Snow White isnt a role model because shes a beautiful princess, shes a role model to young and old that works hard and smile through a song. This is something modern Disney has forgotten and it saddens me deeply.

I found it amazing that every time Snow White made a wish, it came true. There were consequences, but...
The movie opens with Snow White singing into a magic wishing well and wishing that her prince would find her today. He did--and the Queen flipped out and ordered Snow White's murder.
What happened to Grumpy when Snow White wished that he'd like her? The result was that Grumpy's heart was broken when Snow White succumbed to a poisoned apple.
Speaking of the apple, since it was a magic wishing apple Snow White wished it was spring and that her prince would take her to his castle. This broke the hearts of her dwarven friends again, but they were happy that she had found happiness.
It may have been this wishcraft that caused the Queen to seek Snow White's death. Traditionally, witches gain their powers when they become adults. The German word for fair/bright/brilliant is "hell." Snow White was shining, all right! Was that storm caused by Snow White when her friends were in danger?

Snow white may be a "basic" movie compared to what we have today in the animation landscape, but its such a enjoyable experience. I made sure to show it to my little cousins at the beggining of quarantine and it was really funny to see them actually get invested in the story and sad when they thought snow white was dead, l can only imagine how the people watching it for the first time back then were feeling.
Anyways, this was a very enjoyable video and l got really surprised to see that the views werent higher! The algorithm brought me here and, imo, it should push this video harder, it clearly deserves!

@@Leamichellefan2244 Not by a long shot. Snow White possesses its own qualities, both the film and the princess herself. She shows compassion, joy, happiness no matter what the circumstances and even manages to have the Seven Dwarfs answering to her. To a great extent, Snow White becomes head of that house and the way she makes those tiny guys wash their hands is absolutely badass (excuse my french). To me, Snow White has aged admirably well and hasn't lost any of its appeal, despite its age or its "basic" plot. For that, she is still The fairest princess of them all. Did I say "princess"? She's the Fairiest Disney Queen.

The story about Walt telling Ub to draw Mickey on a napkin, you said you wanted a source? Well, I first read about that in the book Walt Disney: the triumph of the American imagination by Neal Gabler, page 178. And the endnotes source it from another book, The Hand Behind the Mouse, cowritten by Iwerks' granddaughter. The story was originally told by Ub's wife.

Snow white is imo the best Princess. When we are first introduced to her she's in rags yet she's pure and optimistic, basically making the best of her circumstances. Then when she flees from the huntsman terrified and the animals greet her, who is she more concerned with? The animals she actually apologises to them, again showing pure kindness and empathy. Then she learns from the animals how to get through a hard time by singing. Teaching us all again no matter how hard life gets you can get through it, if you make the best of it which would have been so pertant during the great depression. Then she thinks the dwarfs are orphans and again she thinks of them first. Then when she hopes to live with them she doesn't expect something for nothing she's willing to do something for it again teaching us not to expect something for nothing in life, we have to work hard. Contrast that with a lot of modern princesses who start of doing okay often, but want more out of life, often obsessed with identity or doing more with their life, and then go of on a grand adventure. Its not that the latter is bad, it's just a bit more ego driven. Snow has things happen to her and her strength of character gets her through she never looses her hope, remainds kind and compassionate, and grateful for what she has and far more relatable. None of us are going to go on grand adventures but all of us will come up against hard times and its how we choose to work through it that makes us who we are. I think she's such a misunderstood character and tbh if we had another character like her we could learn a lot from her. Plus I think her character will endure. Messages of hard work, endurance, strength of character, will live on. Doubt that people will be humming along to moana, or frozen nearly 100 years from now.

But no disney is instead obsessed with deconstructing their films, correcting what they think are flaws and having another what ironically ends up being another boring one dimensional character that imo does reflect society. We are all obsessed with self identity now, all obsessed with ourselves, how we have be wronged rather then how we can do better etc. Not everything that comes later I think is actually progressive or helpful. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't want to live the the 30s but I think we could take some lessons from them in terms of stop being so self obsessed and do your best with life rather then wallowing in self pity or resentment which seems ro be in the water in the culture now.

She’s got a lovely voice. There’s nothing wrong with her and just because she’s not physically strong doesn’t mean she’s not strong I mean hello. She practically tells the door of that if they don’t wash their hands, then getting dinner, and then she apologizes to the forest animals for her scaring them even after she just got the crap scared out of her. oh, and I meant to say, she tells the dwarves that if they don’t wash they can’t eat.

And the same goes for being kind. Thank your for giving this movie the praise it deserves. Snow White does not need to save the world to show that she is important. She is important because she does not have to prove anything. She gives kindness even trough the hardest times.

  • @theadaptationstationmaster

What this video mentioned about the extreme mood whiplash in the movie reminded me of this quote from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.
It is the custom on the stage, in all good murderous melodramas, to present the tragic and the comic scenes, in as regular alternation, as the layers of red and white in a side of streaky bacon. The hero sinks upon his straw bed, weighed down by fetters and misfortunes; in the next scene, his faithful but unconscious squire regales the audience with a comic song. We behold, with throbbing bosoms, the heroine in the grasp of a proud and ruthless baron: her virtue and her life alike in danger, drawing forth her dagger to preserve the one at the cost of the other; and just as our expectations are wrought up to the highest pitch, a whistle is heard, and we are straightway transported to the great hall of the castle; where a grey-headed seneschal sings a funny chorus with a funnier body of vassals, who are free of all sorts of places, from church vaults to palaces, and roam about in company, caroling perpetually.
Such changes appear absurd; but they are not so unnatural as they would seem at first sight. The transitions in real life from well-spread boards to death-beds, and from mourning-weeds to holiday garments, are not a whit less startling; only, there, we are busy actors, instead of passive lookers-on, which makes a vast difference. The actors in the mimic life of the theatre, are blind to violent transitions and abrupt impulses of passion or feeling, which, presented before the eyes of mere spectators, are at once condemned as outrageous and preposterous.

While it's not a particular favorite of mine, I can understand why Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs would be someone else's. There's not much it does badly. It's just that it follows conventions that are no longer used in storytelling(Some of them come from the operetta and the pantomime), so it's not as popular nowadays. Kind of sad really.

Snow White didn't need to fight against 50 people or possess supernatural powers to show she was worthy of her salt. With a firm and yet loving hand she managed to become the head of the Seven Dwarfs house; and showed she could be feminine, selfless, valiant and accomodating as well. That many traits of hers were hardly found or replicated by the princesses of the Disney Reinassance, let alone those ones of recent years; therefore, I consider Snow White not only the fairest princess, but the Fairest Disney Queen.

It's not misogynistic. It's human nature. We are not drawn to un asymmetrical faces which is a signal of illness by nature etc. This evolved into pretty much every mythological genre displaying unattractive characters as evil or bad or at least not be be trusted. May not be a progressive troupe but it doesn't come from no where and was never exclusive to female characters. Its an easy way for characters to recognise evil. Many old myths also display incredibly attractive women as evil as well, but guess what the same troupes are used for men as well.

    • @NeptuneCactus

I don't have particularly strong opinions on any of the marketing for the remake, and if the strike isn't over next year when it releases I'll be waiting until it is if I even decide to cover it at all. That being said if I can touch on it briefly, the fact that it's being remade at all is really interesting to me, because in my brain it's like trying to remake something like The Wizard of Oz (which was also inspired by Snow White's tone / direction). Both movies were so groundbreaking that if remaking them is on the table at all, especially so far after the fact, the end point is to inevitably make an incredibly different movie out of it. In the video you can see that I'm clearly a fan of Snow White's arc, and how showcasing kindness being rewarded after hardship is something I find very satisfying and appealing, even if it's not conventionally interesting / popular with the rest of the Disney animated canon. So inevitably the two will be such different experiences that in retrospect I can only assume it will highlight what works for me in the original movie even more. And it's not because Snow White (1939) is flawless (I touched off this in the video), but it's probably because I just think it's a story that doesn't need to be more complicated. It's simplicity works as is, so to change that changes a considerable bit. The existence of an official remake doesn't tarnish the original at all.
