For 25 years Nigeria has used the present Constitution with so much talk here and there with no action. Every president that comes to power is asked to restructure Nigeria and when you speak to Nigerians the idea of structuring has different meanings. There some that say the country does not need any physical structuring but just changing the section of the constitution that will redistribute the power on the Federal level to the States/Local government and there are some people that agitate for the country to return to pre-independence era. Within the same country you have a section of the population wanting to break away from the country Nigeria. How can any president single handedly work with these options? The restructuring of the country whichever way is expected has to start from the legislative body and not necessarily the president. This not a matter of the president being bold enough, this is an issue that has to be handled in the country putting politics aside. So far no bold action taken by the current president that has not been criticized by the opposition. If any restructuring has to be carried out either amending the constitution to reflect the current situation or complete realigning the country it has to be bi-partisan goal and vision for the country and not an issue one party will tend to criticize the other party for. Governing in Nigeria is full of blames coming from both sides.
The only way forward and if we are ready for progress, peace and development then this country structure need urgent attention. Firstly, we don’t need unitary system of government in a country with multi ethnic group, we also don’t need powerful central government in a country where people value system and cultural belief are quite different. Interestingly, Nigeria is federation in paper ( federating unit should be in practice ) but in reality the government practices unitary system and this has led to the collapse of state of the economy. We are not homogeneous and so therefore we need regional autonomy for our solutions
