I am a southern transplant to Boston. Outside of the Northeast down to DC people are too much in love with their cars and the open road. There is a place for that but long distance travel by rail is amazing. America is so far behind the rest of the world in modern rail travel.

Off topic re: US Army/National Guard. Both organizations can be deployed in the US to provide security. The NG can be deployed by the governor of the respective state for duty wholly within respective state or can be activated/nationalized by authority of the US president and become active duty US military personnel. The US Army can be used domestically. There are exceptions to "posse comitatus"

    A few clarifications:
    1. Freight rail is not dying in the US, and in fact freight rail makes up orders of magnitude more rail volume than passenger in the US. The US moves nearly a third of all freight in the country and is a massive player in the country's economy, far, far more than passenger rail outside the northeast. The industry is having some trouble from Covid, but so is nearly every other industry.
I doubt we're getting autonomous trucks in the next decade outside of possibly a few limited applications, as without hundreds of billions of investment for a dedicated ROW, they'd need to share roads with humans. I doubt we can resolve the endless legal and safety issues to make that work any time soon. Even if they do eventually arrive, autonomous trucks can't surpass the far superiors energy efficiency of rail.
    2. Amtrak actually does go to Canada, however the Canadian routes aren't running during Covid. When not in a pandemic, you can take the train from NY to both Toronto via the Maple Leaf and Montreal via the Adirondack. You can also take the Cascades from Oregon and Washington to Vancouver. However, no Amtrak route goes to Mexico (though a couple go close to the border).

I can readily see why people put down the present underground station but I really didn’t think it all looked so bad. Parts of it definitely look better than other parts though. I once read the the original Penn Station might’ve been doomed right from the very start because the architect rejected having an office tower to go with the station. An office building might well have kept the station from being demolished.

The Moynihan Train Hall is an improvement over the 1968, then, "new" Penn station entrance. However ....
The Moynihan Train Hall can not begin to compare to the original Pennsylvania Station entrance that was
demolished 1961-1968. The old Pennsylvania Hotel (one block away on 7th Street) matched both the Post
Office building and the original Pennsylvania Station. AND The three buildings were not crowded in by
tall skyscrapers at the time of their construction. All three buildings had an abundance of natural light.
*NYC is ever-changing, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse* One of the most recent "worse"
developments is the crowding of the Chrysler building by a new skyscraper -- Check out that monstrosity!

Senator Danielle Patrick Moynihan used to shine shoes in the original Penn Station, which is why he became an advocate of recreating the grandeur of the original Penn Station, which helped lead to the post office becoming part of Penn Station and a part of his dream.

You mentioned about train service from the U.S. to Canada (20:40). Yes, there’s regular Amtrak service between Vancouver, Seattle and Portland (not sure it’s running at the moment due to the pandemic). However, the Vancouver/Seattle leg is about 3 to 4 hours with stops and there’s a study looking into replacing the route with high-speed rail, which would be awesome to have up and running.

Great job as always Ariel. It is beautiful work they did at the Amtrak side, but they are also trying to improve Penn Station. It is not much that they can do in the "basement" of the building. So I give them credit also people just pass by the station, they don't stay there for hours.

all right, very nice job. *Thanks*
    in addition,
William Kendall designed the Post Office while at McKim, Mead & White. McKim passed away 1909, the building was compled 1914. White left in 1906. The postal motto on the exterior is Kendall's. Later, he designed the City Municipal Building downtown.
A.J. Cassett, President of PRR, also build the North River Tunnels under the Hudson River for Penn Staion. Although the tunnels are in need of repair neither New Jersey or New York City can afford to.
The Architectural firm of SOM (Sidmore, Owings, Merrill) designed Moynihan Station leaving the orginal metal trusses in place.
    Pieter Pennnoyer designed the clock.
The orginal Post Office had 21 tracks same as today. Perhaps Penn South will remedy the demand for more trains. But, its a start.
Another reason the PRR didn't build a tall building over Madison Square Garden was the supporting columns would have been too wide at the basement tracks squeezing them out. When A.J. Cassett wanted a hotel over Penn Station the same reason was given although it would have helped finance the station.
Pigeon droppings ...? Have owls nested on the roof?
As commented below, its the two legged rodents that will be infesting the station that needs to addressed.
    Again, nice job

I think you have freight train Theory wrong. I do believe with the new bigger and longer freight trains, and the final miles Theory, the autonomous trucks will be doing the last couple miles of the route. Because Interstate Road system does not have a viability for all of these trucks.

The "rebirth" of Penn Station is a good news for fans of architecture and railfans worldwide and I am one.
And the return to streets of streetcars or trolleycars or trams, I think that is the next pending choice in public transportation in your city. New York was pioneer in the use in 19th Century, and also was the first with classic PCCs streamlined streetcars in normal service.
A suggestion for a future video. City Hall subway station, out of use for passengers but not for trains because is a loop at the end of a line. It´s a fantastic example of Catalan Modernist style (our local branch of Art Nouveau here in Barcelona and Catalonia plus other sites), designed by Valencian architect Rafael Guastavino and his Guastavino Proof Company, with other constructions in the city, I remember Oister Bar and Restaurant inside Grand Central Station, or Register´s Room in Ellis Island.

Driverless trucks are a long long way off replacing rail freight for one trucks can’t transport the volume required and driverless trucks are more hype than anything practical at least for a few decades. Just think how many tens of thousand of people would be put out of work by driverless trucks. The U.S is also 30 years behind the times with high speed rail.

Also, just in case, about Georgians, Georgia ( country by Black Sea, Caucasus, Southeast Europe) Thing is that Georgians in Caucasus, Etruscans in Italy, Corsicans in Corsica, Picts in Britain, Spanish Iberians in Spain and other Iberian, Ibero/ Celtic peoples have same ethno, ethnic origin and represent Iberian race, Iberian, Ibero/ Celtic peoples of Europe and this is why all these listed peoples ( together with originality of each of these ethno, ethnic peoples) have similarities, identical in different forms of culture, in folk music, dance, in ancient architectural style and so on. Also Georgians cultures of different historical times are European ( together with their own culture/ cultures, influences with different European cultures, beginning from ancient times, influences with ancient Greek civilizations, cultures, with Roman cultures, later with Byzantine/East Roman culture, with Catholic Europe and other European cultures during all historical periods in history of Georgians, Georgia ) and of course, all these things proven historically/scientifically by World's, European ( including Georgian) historians/scientists, and this is why Georgians ( Georgia's) European/Western way is absolutely naturally and historically right way to returning to their European roots, which means their true Georgians roots in this South- Eastern, Caucasus region of Europe, where Georgia itself is located and this is how vast majority of Georgians consider themselves and their country.
In addition, I note that Georgians, like Corsicans, Picts, Etruscans, Spanish Iberians and other peoples belong to the Iberian race, the Iberian peoples of Europe and have a kinship etno relationship to Celts through those peoples who have both Iberian and Celtic ethno origin, these last, such peoples live in a certain part of Spain, Britain, Scotland and so on., and there is also a historical opinion that a certain part of the Celts was also mixed with the West Georgian ethnic peoples in their time. From all that has been said, Georgians also have an ethno-cultural attitude towards the Celts in a certain way, which also manifests itself in certain Georgian folk songs, melodies, in dances, for example, the dance "Khorumi" and so on, also proven by archaeological / cultural data. There are also 3 Iberian, Spanish Iberia, Georgian Iberia and Irish Iberia, etc. It is through these mentioned factors that Georgians also have an ethnically related relationship with the Celts

No offense but your comments on freight rail are laughable. Do you realize the number of trucks that would be needed to replace trains and the congestion and wear that would cause on the road network. Rail is a much more energy efficient means of transportation than road even with electric vehicles. Amtrak doesn't operate freight rail and in fact most of tracks Amtrak uses (the northeast corridor being the big exception) are owned by freight railroads, and their freight systems are so much larger than the tracks shown on the Amtrak system map. Not to be mean to Amtrak but there are huge swaths of the country that they don't serve with passenger rail but have tons of freight rail traffic. Yes passenger numbers have been slowly growing over the last couple decades but Amtrak started at such a low historical point in ridership that the increase still pales in comparison to the past and to freight volumes, the reason Amtrak even exists is because passenger rail had turned into such a low volume money pit that the railroad companies wanted to rid themselves of it and focus on the much larger and growing freight business (the northeast had some additional historical complications due too many competing railroads and capacity that made freight unprofitable for a time there too in the 60s to 80s, but that was a regional and price regulation problem)

The Vermonter goes from DC to Penn, Connecticut, a bit of Mass to almost the top of Vermont. Popular with students at elite schools including Yale ( New Haven). It stops a million times and is very slow. The Empire from Moynihan to Albany takes about 2.5 hrs and there are lots of trains all day. The actual current LIRR is a hel-scape. Worse than ever and the signage doesn’t tell you which each train is stopping. It’s horrible and is now filthy and confusing. Service is spotty. I have an Iphone 12 with 256 storage services now by AT&T and I often can’t get a connection to check out the LIRR train route online.
