do you need to be in a 3d view first? floor plan?? where??

You can be in 3D space or plan or elevation views depending on what plain you are looking to add void to. For example if I was cutting out a void in a wall I would go to elevation view. Always a good idea to set the reference plain in 3D view before you start. Hope this helps.
