In an interview Troy Baker said that the mocap performance for Joel’s death scene was really hard for him and the others. Ashley Johnson had recently lost her dad, and I think you can tell that she brought a lot of that pain into her performance as Ellie, loosing the father she sees in Joel. it’s raw, and so powerful.

Voice acting is the job. And Performance capture for games has been standard for about 15 years now all the way back to Uncharted Part 1.

A TON of the storytelling in this game is through the environment; notes, graffiti, letters, Ellie’s journal, documents, collectibles, and artifacts. Make sure to check Ellie’s backpack (especially after cutscenes/during flashback sections) bc they will tell you a lot more than the characters will explicitly say/think. This game is like the Ish storyline in Pittsburgh times 100. It’s so fucking good.

I need to second everyone else's sentiment here. I have absolutely loved watching your play through of TLOU. It is one of, if not, my favorite game of all time also. Please keep going. Like they all said, everything will be answered for you. Maybe shift your perspective a touch to consider Ellie being the main character of both games. Once I thought of it that way, it helped. Yes you start playing as Joel, but the story is about Ellie. Even in the first game. None of it would have happened the way it did, if Ellie didn't exist and was immune. I never get tired of seeing Ellie's reactions during Joel's death scene. You can tell that Ashley Johnson wasn't just reading lines from the script. I think Joel's death is also a representation that anything can happen at any point of time in this world. But that's just my opinion.

Yeah man, really glad and anxious for you to experience this one. It is a beautiful but undeniably dark story, but the gameplay is stellar, and the visual upgrades and worldbuilding following Part 1 make it super compelling, too. It was one of those games that I felt immensely gratified to play, and also so exhausted from that I resolved never to play it again 😅
Enjoy it, sir - it's powerful.

Really appreciate your reaction! I get it, and the feeling that it's maybe disrespectful is pretty common. Joel was the main character of the first game, players grew attached to him, saw him as something of a hero, if a flawed one. Maybe they thought he'd end up dying at some point, but in a hail of gunfire fighting honorably to save Ellie or Tommy, or doing a good deed. But we know, from not long after the 20 year time jump in the first game that Joel's been a piece of shit for a long time. He's hurt and killed a lot of people, and even though his trip across America with Ellie may have felt in some sense like a pathway to healing and a sliver of redemption, everyone he's hurt and killed is part of his history, and he wasn't always quick and clean with his own executions, and certainly not moral by his own admissions. He may have turned a page recently, but that doesn't have to matter to anyone else.
His number came up, and it wasn't dignified, it wasn't clean, it wasn't quick. He went out hard and brutal, with a whimper. I'm not sure anyone deserves that kind of death, even if they've earned a ticket out of existence and the train's pulling up to the stop, but it's what he got. I'm sure Abby and her people had their own reasons, however justified.
You'll get your answers. It's okay to be upset and hurt and confused. This is a remarkable game, certainly among the most emotionally stirring ones I've played, and it has a lot of emotional range.

So excited for this. Some tips/tricks for Part 2.
Be careful with flashlight in human combat, they will BE ON YOU if its on. Believe its R3 to toggle on/off.
The brick/bottle is so critical to stun enemies with for an easy melee kill. Also, dont forget if you grab an enemy you can then use them as a shield and hit aim to fire at other enemies.
When ur just walking around in between encounters try to get used to just reloading all ur weapons. Nothing worse than entering combat with only 1 round in ur revolver lol. Reload by just tapping the Shoot button when ur NOT aiming.
Looking forward to how u make your way through this masterpiece and hope these are helpful.

You're reaction is the desired result, and how many of us felt. Its testament to the art of how the devs were able to get this reaction out people who love the first game. Joel definitely deserved better, but I feel like his death was an example of how cruel this world is.
After this, maybe you could watch the making of The last of us 2 documentary? It is very insightful to the experience and how everyone felt, from the devs to the voice actors doing motion capture. It really shows how making this game wasnt easy. I look at Naughty Dog with more respect after this. Their confidence in storytelling is on another level to go this route.

In Tess' words from the first game: "Guess what, Joel, we're shitty people. It's been this way for a long time.""
Joel was a horrible person. You said it yourself, he probably has made so many enemies. Most of them he doesn't even know exist.
We know Abby was searching for someone from her first section.
When she confronts Joel, she says "Joel.. Miller". Their family name was never mentioned, but she knew it. She knew HIM.
But we get the perspective of Joel and Ellie. They don't recognize any of those people. We're as confused as they are. They're just strangers. Why are they here? Why were they so hell bent on torturing Joel like this just to kill him? It didn't seem like they wanted information. The use of the golf club made it seem personal.
There's more to this. Keep playing to find out!

12:30 The song Ellie has in her headphones here is "Through the Valley" by Shawn James. The announcement trailer for _Part II_ back in 2016 features Ellie herself singing it - and as you can imagine, Ashley Johnson's rendition is nothing short of stellar

    • @ChibiHoshiDragon
      @ChibiHoshiDragon 13 годин тому

Ashley's cover of "Through the Valley" can be heard if you finish a permadeath (or permadeath and grounded) playthrough, and watch all the credits
Troy's cover of "Future Days" is your prize if you finish a grounded playthrough and watch all the credits.
If the player finishs a regular playthrough, they get Wayfaring Stranger, with the both of them singing.

This game...man...this game. I had heard stuff about it, I kind of guessed about Joel, but I was not prepared for it to happen so quickly. And like you said, so unceremoniously. I think this is a game that you really need to absorb and "feel" it. This is a hard game. Not like difficulty-wise, but emotionally... Good luck, man. I'm really enjoying your reaction to TLOU. So glad you've already jumped into part 2.

Just a few notes. Ellie is 19 now and she actually lives in Joel’s standalone garage. You can also tell that he helped her make it more livable by the tubes that run in her place for the water and such. Just a cool observation

That's the beauty of video games, especially when they're well made.
A film rarely brings out such emotions.
Since you have invested many hours in the game, the world and the characters, you feel more than with series or films.
In this world there is often no good or evil but people who want to survive
